Whether or not he met his end on the noose, Potchefstroom soon found itself with a haunting tale: the ghost of Karel Malan restlessly roaming the very site of his incarceration. The story goes that some years after Malan’s trial, the old prison gallows were dismantled and the timber was reused to extend a nearby Sunday school building. This seemingly innocent renovation is said to have stirred up Malan’s spirit. Not long after the first restaurant opened its doors (a steakhouse called Longhorn in 1988), staff began experiencing strange phenomena. Flickering lights, mysterious knocks on closed doors, the ice machine turning on and off by itself, condiments from all tables suddenly gathered onto one table, and even a phantom “tap on the shoulder” – these were among the eerie happenings waiters reported late at night (Bygones and Byways: 2012). It didn’t take long for people to whisper that Jurie Schoeman’s restless spirit was behind it. In fact, local legend flat-out blames Jurie’s ghost for the closure of six different restaurants that tried to operate near his grave over the years (Bygones and Byways: 2012). Despite the flow of beer and good cheer, this last iteration also closed down by 2011, marking the sixth restaurant to fail at the site (Bygones and Byways: 2012). Today, the site is part of the Riverwalk Shopping Centre, and any new restaurant that opens there certainly does so with fingers crossed and perhaps a friendly nod to Jurie’s spirit for good luck. Patrons still swap stories of the old Longhorn haunting, and some former waiters swear that after closing time, they could feel a presence lingering – as if old Jurie was keeping an eye on his property one last time. Daar is mense wat met stories gebore word—mense wat nie net luister nie, maar onthou, opskryf en dit op so ’n manier deel dat dit ander se harte raak. Joha van Dyk was een van daardie mense. Haar lewe was gevul met woorde, en sy het geweet hoe om hulle so te rangskik dat dit blywende impak maak. Foto : Facebook Joha van Dyk Op net 27-jarige ouderdom is sy onverwags oorlede in haar woonstel in Stellenbosch, nadat sy die vorige dag siek begin voel het. Dit was ’n skok vir vriende, familie en die literêre gemeenskap, veral omdat sy besig was om ’n stewige loopbaan as skrywer te bou. Haar talent was duidelik, haar toekoms blink, en haar liefde vir stories onmiskenbaar. Van ’n Plaaskind tot ’n Skrywer Joha was nie iemand wat eers later in haar lewe die liefde vir woorde ontdek het nie. Dit was nog altyd daar. Sy het grootgeword op ’n plaas genaamd Steenvlei aan die Weskus van Namakwaland—’n plek waar storievertelling amper ’n manier van oorleef is. Daar, tussen die mense en die natuur, het haar verbeelding vlerke gekry. Haar ouers se gastehuis, Die Houthoop, was nog ’n bron van inspirasie. Dit het haar aan verskeie mense en hul verhale blootgestel—karakters van alle soorte wat haar gehelp het om ’n skrywer se oog vir detail te ontwikkel. Op agt jaar oud het sy haar eerste Word-dokument oopgemaak op ’n rekenaar wat haar broer herbou het. Van daardie oomblik af was dit duidelik—hierdie kind gaan stories skryf. Stellenbosch: Die Begin van ’n Reis As jong kind het sy reeds geweet waar sy wil wees, en Stellenbosch was daardie plek. Toe sy hoërskool toe gaan, het sy deel geword van Hoërskool Stellenbosch se drama- en kultuurlewe. Sy het nie net op die verhoog gestaan nie—sy was agter die skerms as verhoogbestuurder, betrokke by die skoolkoerant en altyd gereed met idees vir nuwe projekte. Tussen al hierdie aktiwiteite deur het sy steeds tyd gekry om musiek te luister en te skryf—selfs as dit beteken het sy moes vir haar onderwysers voorgee dat sy actually aandag gee in die klas. Stories het in haar kop gewoon, en sy het hulle neergeskryf wanneer en waar sy kon. Universiteit en die Bou van ’n Loopbaan Nadat sy in 2018 haar BA in Geesteswetenskappe aan die Universiteit Stellenbosch voltooi het, het sy dadelik verder gestudeer. In 2019 het sy haar Honneurs in Engelse Studies met Cum Laude geslaag, en in 2020 het sy haar Meestersgraad voltooi—ook met Cum Laude. Haar tesis het gefokus op kortverhale oor Kleinzee, ’n klein en amper vergete dorpie. Dit was ’n verdere bewys van hoe sy kon stories vertel oor plekke en mense wat ander dalk misgekyk het. Sy het ook begin werk aan haar PhD, weer met ’n fokus op Namakwaland en sy manier van storievertelling. Sy was in haar element, besig om nie net die geskiedenis van haar wêreld te bewaar nie, maar dit ook op haar unieke manier weer te gee. Poësie en Fiksie: ’n Talent wat Deurgebreek het Joha se talent het nie ongesiens verbygegaan nie. Sy het haar eerste gedigte in 2017 gepubliseer toe vyf van haar werke in die studentedigbundel, Penseel, verskyn het. Haar gedig "Polsslag" was deel van die versameling Die Môre Is Jy, en in 2021 en 2022 is nog van haar poësie gepubliseer—onder andere op Versindaba. Maar dit was haar jeugfiksie wat haar naam regtig begin vestig het. In 2020 het haar debuutroman Branderjaer verskyn. Dit was nie net ’n boek nie—dit was ’n vars, eerlike en kragtige jongvolwasse storie wat gewys het dat sy haar generasie verstaan. Haar tweede boek, Vuurvreter, is in 2022 gepubliseer en het haar posisie as ’n opkomende stem in Afrikaanse letterkunde verder bevestig. ’n Skrywer wat Ons Te Gou Moes Groet Met haar onverwagse heengaan is daar ’n leemte gelaat—nie net in die lewens van haar vriende en familie nie, maar ook in die Afrikaanse letterkunde. Sy was besig om momentum te bou, om haar stories met die wêreld te deel, en toe gebeur die onverwagse. Maar as daar een ding is wat seker is, is dit dat skrywers nooit regtig weggaan nie. Recently selected to participate in the Elite Invitational Hockey Tour in the Netherlands, Yolindi’s story is one of passion, perseverance, and purpose. From Netball Dropout to Hockey Devotee Yolindi first picked up a hockey stick in Grade 4 after realizing that netball wasn’t her game. What began as a fallback sport quickly turned into a passion. Though hockey wasn’t a big deal at her primary school, by high school, Yolindi had made the decision to pursue the sport seriously. Over the years, the sport has become more competitive and intense. She laughs about the irony that while hockey isn’t technically a contact sport, injuries and bruises are inevitable. From ankle knocks to a ball ricocheting off her shoulder during a 16-yard play, she has taken it all in stride. Tour Experience and National Selection A recent highlight in Yolindi’s journey was her participation in a school tour to Menlopark, Pretoria, where she played several games against strong city schools. Though her team didn’t win all their matches, they gained valuable experience and improved teamwork. It was during this tour that Yolindi received news that would change her life—she was selected, along with four other teammates, to join the South African team for the Elite Invitational Tour to the Netherlands. An International Dream with a Price Tag The Netherlands tour is not just a game-changer—it’s a dream come true. But for dreams to take flight, they need support. The total cost of the tour is R55,500, and Yolindi and her family are currently fundraising to make this trip possible. She has set up a BackaBuddy campaign and is exploring GoFundMe to allow international donations. During the tour, she will not only play matches but also attend a World Cup game and receive coaching from international players—a golden opportunity to grow her skill set.
