Tussen Junie en September is die risiko van veldbrande op sy hoogste en dit neem slegs een vonk om ’n verwoestende vuur aan die brand te steek. In 2023 alleen het veldbrande in die Noordwes-provinsie sowat 38 000 hektaar weiding vernietig, plaasaktiwiteite ontwrig en infrastruktuur in landelike gebiede beskadig. Die omliggende gebiede van Potchefstroom, veral plase in Mooibank, Vyfhoek en die buitewyke van Ikageng, bly besonder kwesbaar weens hoë, droë gras en beperkte natuurlike brandbreke. Volgens die Suid-Afrikaanse Weerdiens vind veldbrande die meeste plaas tydens die winter, wanneer die relatiewe humiditeit onder 30% daal. Bergwinde – warm, droë winde wat vanaf hoëliggende gebiede waai – dra daartoe by dat vlamme vinnig versprei, veral vroegoggend en laatmiddag. Vrywilligers: Eerste op die toneel, dikwels alleen In landelike gebiede soos dié van die JB Marks-munisipaliteit is formele brandweerdienste afhanklik van vrywillige noodeenhede. Hierdie gemeenskapsgebaseerde spanne bestaan uit opgeleide maar onbetaalde individue wat dikwels eerste op toneel is, veral in afgeleë gebiede. Hulle werk met beperkte hulpbronne, hergebruik toerusting en maak grootliks staat op gemeenskapssteun, veral tydens uitgerekte en uitputtende brande. Waarom skenkings van kardinale belang is Wanneer brande aktief is, kan vrywilligers 8 tot 12 uur aaneen op die vuurlyn wees. In sulke omstandighede verloor die liggaam vinnig vloeistowwe en sonder behoorlike hidrasie word hul veiligheid en werkvermoë ernstig benadeel. Skenkings soos bottels water, energiedrankies en elektrolietpoeiers, asook proteïenstawe, neutemengsels en ander peuselhappies is van kritieke belang om uitputting, dehidrasie en hittesteek te voorkom. Carletonville, Gauteng, Op 3 Augustus 1964 het die grond in die mynwerkersdorp Blyvooruitzicht skielik oopgeskeur en 'n huis, 'n gesin en 'n gemeenskap vir altyd verander. Een-en-sestig jaar later onthou inwoners nog steeds die nag toe ’n reuse-sinkgat oopgegaan het en die huis van die Oosthuizen-gesin binne sekondes verorber het. Die tragedie het 'n diep merk gelaat op die geskiedenis van Carletonville, en word steeds elke jaar op gepaste wyse herdenk. Image: Youtube Die nag toe die aarde oopgaan In die vroeë oggendure van 3 Augustus 1964 het 'n enorme sinkgat in die Westdene-woonbuurt van Blyvooruitzicht ontstaan. Die grond het eenvoudig inmekaar gestort, en saam daarmee is die huis van Johannes Marthinus Oosthuizen (36), sy vrou Hester (34), hul kinders Jacoba (12), Johannes (8) en Marianne (6), sowel as hul huishulp, in die diepte ingetrek. Die gesin is nooit weer gevind nie, hulle is letterlik lewend begrawe in 'n gat wat na raming 55 meter breed en 30 meter diep was. Image: eGGSA Image: eGGSA Bure het vertel hoe hulle wakker geskrik het van 'n dreunende geluid, “soos waens wat oor klippe rol”, en daarna gesien het hoe die Oosthuizens se huis voor hul oë verdwyn. Die Brits-gesin het hul kinders gegryp en net betyds uit hul huis gevlug voordat ook hul fondament begin kraak het. Verskeie ander gesinne moes deur vensters ontsnap toe die grond onder hul huise begin gly. Wat het die ramp veroorsaak? Die gebied rondom Carletonville lê op dolomietgesteente, 'n oplosbare rots wat oor dekades ondergronds holtes kan vorm. Jare van intensiewe goudmynbou, saam met lekke waterpype wat die grond versadig het, het die ondergrondse holte laat instort. Die gevolglike sinkgat was een van die grootste en dodelikste wat Suid-Afrika nog ooit beleef het. Image: erfenisstigting Na die ramp het ingenieurs bevestig dat verlaging van die watertafel deur mynbou een van die grootste bydraende faktore was. Die Blyvooruitzicht-myn het kort daarna honderde gesinne uit die Westdene-area ontruim en noodbehuising opgerig in ‘n aangrensende gebied, genaamd Southdene. ’n Gemeenskap treur Op 5 Augustus 1964 is ’n groot gedenkdiens vir die Oosthuizens gehou, waar vier predikante van die NG Kerk die seremonie gelei het. Alhoewel die liggaam van geen familielid teruggevind is nie, is hul name in 1965 op ’n gedenksteen geplaas wat vandag nog op ’n heuwel oorkant die sinkgat staan. Image: eGGSA Die inskripsie lui: “God self het hulle begrawe.” Vir die mense van Carletonville het die tragedie bly leef, nie net in herinneringe nie, maar ook in die grond self. Die gebied waar Westdene vroeër gestaan het, is vandag 'n leë stuk veld. Huise is nooit weer daar gebou nie. 61 jaar later: Onthou en leer In 2025, een-en-sestig jaar ná die ramp, is die herdenking weer ’n geleentheid vir jong en oud om die verhaal te hoor, te onthou en te leer. Die nuusplatform Maroela Media het onlangs onderhoude gevoer met oorlewendes en voormalige inwoners van Blyvooruitzicht. 'n 87-jarige voormalige hulpwerker het ook sy ervaring gedeel van daardie oggend, toe hy een van die eerstes op die toneel was. Plaaslike skole het die verhaal van die sinkgat in hul lesse opgeneem en daar is blomme by die gedenkteken geplaas. Gemeenskapslede sê dat die ramp 'n voortdurende herinnering is aan hoe broos die aarde onder ons voete is. Vandag moet alle konstruksieprojekte in sulke areas eers deeglike geotegniese opnames ondergaan. Tog, ondanks verbeterde monitering, bly sinkgate 'n probleem. In die afgelope paar jaar is gebiede in Khutsong, net suid van Carletonville, herhaaldelik deur sinkgate getref. In 2023 is sekere dele van die dorp tot rampgebied verklaar. Die herinnering aan die Oosthuizens en hul huishoudster, die traumatiese gebeure van 3 Augustus 1964, en die langtermyngevolge daarvan, bly dus nie net 'n deel van Carletonville se verlede nie, dit is 'n lewende les oor geologiese waaksaamheid, gemeenskapsamehorigheid, en die waardering van die lewe self. North-West University’s Eagles have confirmed a 25-player roster for the 2025 Varsity Football season and will kick off the men’s tournament on Thursday 7 August  away to the University of Johannesburg at Soweto Stadium. The Vlakvark Trail Run is back for its 19th edition, and this year’s stampede through the Faan Meintjies Nature Reserve promises all the usual: dust, sweat, medals, and the odd warthog-themed sock. Whether you’re a seasoned runner, a Sunday stroller or just there for the boerie rolls, it’s all going down on Saturday, 20 September 2025, starting at 07h00. Where It’s Happening The action unfolds at the Faan Meintjies Nature Reserve, about 13km outside of Klerksdorp on the road to Potch and Eleazer. With its mix of acacia thorn trees, rocky koppies, and wide grassveld, the 1,000-hectare reserve offers an ideal backdrop for getting properly out of breath. There are no big predators, but don’t be shocked if you spot a giraffe or red hartebeest giving you the side-eye as you pass. The upgrade, centred on the installation and commissioning of a new transformer, has progressed through key technical phases, though some challenges remain and not all areas are back online simultaneously. Transformer Arrival and Commissioning Progress The new transformer arrived on site at the Frikkie van der Merwe Substation on 1 August 2025, marking a crucial step toward restoring supply to the affected communities. Cold commissioning tests were completed successfully on 2 August, and the project moved into hot commissioning, during which the transformer is energised to verify full operational capacity under load. Staged Restoration and Technical Caution As part of a controlled reconnect plan, electricity was reintroduced to certain sections in a staged manner beginning 3 August. Officials have emphasised that not all areas would receive power at once; this phased approach is intended to stabilise the network and avoid overload. During the process, a technical issue with a smaller component, a Current Transformer (CT) on one phase, was identified, triggering automatic protective shutdowns in affected parts. That necessitated brief interruptions while technicians and suppliers worked to ensure safe integration and prevent damage.
