In every community, there are those who need a helping hand and those who have the heart to give it.

The Abraham Kriel Children’s Home in Potchefstroom is extending an open invitation to compassionate, driven individuals who are ready to make a difference in the lives of young people. This is more than a call for help; it’s an opportunity to inspire, guide, and leave a lasting mark on the future of our youth.
Why Your Time Matters
The Abraham Kriel Children’s Home has been a safe haven for countless children, providing shelter, care, and education to those who need it most. But beyond meeting basic needs, the organisation strives to equip each child with the skills and confidence to succeed academically and socially.
Right now, the home is looking for English-speaking volunteers to assist learners from Grade R to Grade 12, including those tackling specialty subjects. By dedicating just a little of your time, you can play a part in shaping a brighter future for these children, helping them unlock their potential and discover the power of education.
What’s Needed from Volunteers
The roles are straightforward, but the impact is profound. Volunteers will:
Assist with homework and study preparation
Offer guidance in understanding school subjects
Encourage a love for learning through patient, supportive mentorship
The sessions run Monday to Friday at two convenient times:
15:00 – 16:00
19:00 – 20:00
Whether you’re available for one session a week or every day, your contribution is valuable. The home understands that volunteers have different schedules, so flexibility is welcomed.
Who Should Volunteer?
If you’re passionate about education, enjoy working with children, and can communicate fluently in English, you could be the perfect fit. Retired teachers, university students, working professionals, and anyone with the patience and willingness to help are encouraged to step forward.
No special qualifications are required - just dedication, empathy, and a willingness to make each hour you spend with the children truly count.
The Ripple Effect of Giving Back
One hour of your time can mean so much more than finishing a math problem or understanding a history chapter. It’s about showing a child that someone believes in them, that their efforts matter, and that they have the potential to succeed. Those small moments of encouragement can plant seeds of self-confidence that grow for years to come.
Studies consistently show that children who receive one-on-one academic support not only perform better in school but also develop stronger problem-solving skills and a more positive outlook on life. By volunteering, you’re not just helping with schoolwork, you’re investing in a child’s future.
How to Get Involved
Becoming a volunteer is as simple as making contact. If you’re ready to lend your time and talents to this worthy cause, reach out to Boitumelo at 018 294 5347 or send an email to education@akpotch.co.za.
The need is urgent, but the reward is immense - knowing that you’ve made a tangible difference in the life of a child.
Final Thought Opportunities to make a real impact don’t always come knocking. Sometimes, they appear in a simple request for help like this one. The children at Abraham Kriel Children’s Home are waiting for someone to believe in them. Could that someone be you?
