Potch isn’t usually the place you'd associate with battle cries and muscle burn, but come spring, that’s exactly what’s going down at, NWU McArthur Stadium, 71 Beyers Naudé Avenue. The Deadly Dozen fitness festival is rolling into town, and it's not here to play nice.
This isn’t your average jog-in-the-park affair. It’s 12 rounds of sweat, suffering, and surprisingly enthusiastic high-fives. If your idea of a good time includes deadlifts, bear crawls, and devil’s presses, with a 400m dash thrown in between for fun, you might have just found your happy place.
What’s the Deal?
Deadly Dozen is essentially a love letter to pain. It’s a test of grit that combines track running with brutal fitness stations. The format? Simple, in a sadistic kind of way:
12 x 400m track runs (called “Journeys”)
12 x fitness challenges (“Labours”) in between each run
Each Labour is the kind of thing that makes personal trainers giggle:
240m Farmers Carry
60 Deadlifts
60 Lunges
60 Snatches
60m Burpee Broad Jumps
60 Goblet Squats
240m Front Carry
60 Push Presses
120m Bear Crawl
60 Clean & Press
180m Overhead Carry
20 Devils Press
Basically, if it hurts, it’s probably in there.
Not Just a Race
Deadly Dozen is being billed as a “fitness festival”, which means it’s more than just lifting heavy things and trying not to collapse. You can expect a strong sense of community, a bit of banter, and a crowd that’ll cheer even if you’re crawling instead of running.
It’s for seasoned athletes, weekend warriors, and even folks who just want to test themselves before limping back to the beer tent. There’s also a team option, so you don’t have to face the suffering alone, bring your gym buddies or recruit strangers on the day. Either way, misery loves company.
For the Little Ones
Kids under 12 can tag along for free, though maybe don’t get them doing devil’s presses just yet.
