The JB Marks Local Municipality is currently managing a dynamic set of priorities that directly impact service delivery and infrastructure. From large-scale housing projects to necessary service interruptions, the municipality is working to modernize the region's facilities while addressing immediate maintenance requirements and simplifying public service protocols.
Notably, as part of an essential maintenance schedule, a planned water supply shutdown is set to occur tomorrow, Tuesday, 17 March 2026, for repairs in Ikageng and industrial areas. Beyond these immediate maintenance tasks, the municipality is moving forward with significant housing developments and clarifying critical assistance programs for residents.

Over 1,000 New Homes for Ikageng Ext 13
A major milestone in addressing housing needs was reached as MEC for Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements, and Traditional Affairs, Gaoage Oageng Molapisi, joined the Executive Mayor of JB Marks Local Municipality, Cllr Gaba Thithiba Ka Qhele, to introduce the three contractors selected for a substantial residential project.
This initiative will see the construction of 1,075 houses within Ikageng Ext 13. The project is valued at over R230 million and is central to the provincial focus of "Building a North West Province That Works." Construction operations are planned to begin in April 2026 and are scheduled for completion by March 2027. This development is expected to provide long-term housing solutions and generate employment opportunities within the local construction sector.

Critical Water Infrastructure Maintenance Requires Scheduled Shutdown
As referenced above, residents and businesses are reminded of the scheduled water supply interruption planned for tomorrow, Tuesday, 17 March 2026. This one-day shutdown at the Ikageng Pumping Station is necessary for critical infrastructure work by contractors on site.
The work, designed to replace dysfunctional valves and complete crucial pipeline connections between Pump Stations 7 and 8, will require the shutdown to run from 06H00 in the morning until late. Residents in the following areas are urged to ensure they have stored sufficient water in advance for the duration of the interruption:

Understanding the Free Basic Electricity (FBE) Token Allocation System
To ensure that registered indigent customers successfully access their municipal support, the JB Marks Local Municipality Communications Unit has issued a clarification on how Free Basic Electricity (FBE) tokens are allocated and generated. This guidance follows several customer enquiries regarding tokens that were either not being received or not accepted by prepaid electricity keypads.
The municipality advises that FBE allocations are automatically issued by the system only when an eligible Indigent Customer makes their first prepaid electricity purchase within a given calendar month. During this first monthly transaction, a customer receives an additional 20-digit token which represents the allocated free units.
Key guidance for FBE users:
The 20-digit FBE token must be entered into the meter keypad to load the free units.
The system generates only one FBE token per customer per month; once successfully loaded, no further free tokens will be issued for that period.
Residents are encouraged to check all tokens provided during their first purchase carefully and enter them immediately.
For any further queries or assistance, residents are encouraged to visit the Electricity Department or their nearest Municipal Office.

Through this multi-pronged approach, the JB Marks Local Municipality is focusing on sustainable growth and responsive service delivery. While temporary shutdowns for maintenance may cause inconvenience, they are presented as essential steps toward long-term network reliability. Meanwhile, the rollout of major housing projects and the refinement of social support systems demonstrate a commitment to improving the living standards of the community as part of the broader provincial development goals.
