The past week inside the JB Marks Local Municipality was marked by a heavy push toward accelerated service delivery, alongside unexpected infrastructure challenges and critical maintenance projects. Municipal leadership balanced community outreach programs with emergency responses to utility disruptions, highlighting the ongoing operational demands faced by the local government in managing both the Tlokwe and Ventersdorp regions.

Service Delivery Accelerated in Rysmierbult Through Thuntsha Lerole Phase 6
On Friday, 5 June 2026, the Dr. Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality partnered with the JB Marks Local Municipality to roll out Phase 6 of the Thuntsha Lerole Accelerated Service Delivery Programme. Centered at the Rysmierbult Community Hall in Ward 28, the initiative brought localized, high-impact municipal maintenance and interdepartmental resources directly to regional residents.
Early-morning operations focused on clearing infrastructural backlogs and addressing immediate community needs. Teams executed the grading of local dirt roads, the patching of regional potholes, and the cleaning and clearing of area grave sites. Beyond municipal upkeep, the event served as a centralized hub for provincial and private sector services. Representatives from the Office of the Premier, the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), SASSA, and the provincial Departments of Social Development, Health, and Agriculture & Rural Development were present. Banking institutions, including Absa and Standard Bank, also established mobile stations to provide financial services to rural community members.

The day concluded with an open governance feedback session chaired by the Acting Executive Mayor, Cllr. Gerard Modise. The town-hall style forum allowed Rysmierbult residents to directly engage municipal leadership. A panel of local Councillors and Municipal Officials provided immediate responses to pressing infrastructure and administrative inquiries raised by the public.

Planned Eskom Maintenance Triggers Upcoming Electricity Outage for Old Ikageng
The JB Marks Local Municipality issued an advance public notice regarding a scheduled electricity outage set to affect the Tlokwe Region on Thursday, 11 June 2026. The planned interruption is required by the national power utility, Eskom, to perform critical maintenance on Transformer No. 1 at the Ikageng Main Substation.
The scope of work involves topping up essential transformer oil to maintain system reliability and prevent long-term grid failure. To give residents ample time to prepare, the municipality advised the public to anticipate a 12-hour disruption lasting from 06h00 to 18h00, as Eskom did not lock in precise completion times. The outage will impact the entirety of Old Ikageng (Ikageng Proper) and specific sections of the Ikageng Extensions.
Stormwater Drain Collapse Prompts Emergency Road Closure on Walter Sisulu Street
Motorists and businesses in the Potchefstroom area faced transit adjustments following the emergency closure of a major thoroughfare. The entrance to Walter Sisulu Street (formerly Church Street) from the Dr. Nelson Mandela Drive (N12) intersection was closed to all traffic after inspectors discovered a severely compromised underground structure.
An on-site investigation conducted by the Municipality’s Roads and Stormwater Team confirmed that a vital stormwater drain had collapsed beneath the roadway, creating unsafe driving conditions. To allow technical crews unhindered access to heavy machinery and excavation zones, the immediate junction was cordoned off.
Repair teams targeted a completion date of Wednesday, 10 June 2026, contingent on stable weather and site safety variables. While structural repairs took place, motorists were rerouted through Sol Plaatjie Avenue and New Market Street, with traffic officials urging drivers to exercise heightened caution around the construction zone.
Cable Theft Plunges Entire Ventersdorp Region into Darkness
On Monday, 8 June 2026, the municipality faced a severe utility setback when the entire Ventersdorp area was hit by a widespread blackout. Local administrative authorities confirmed that the systemic failure was the direct result of coordinated cable theft executed at two separate geographic locations.
Eskom technical teams were deployed to the affected zones to assess the wreckage and initiate complex cable replacements and infrastructure repairs. Because of the extent of the physical damage caused by the theft, utility teams could not immediately provide an estimated time of restoration.
The local municipality condemned the vandalism and apologized to the businesses, clinics, and households disrupted by the sudden loss of grid power, assuring residents that all available technical capacity was being used to expedite repairs.
Renovation Completed: Municipal Revenue Office Reopens to Public
Following a brief period of operational relocation and closure, the JB Marks Local Municipality announced that its main Municipal Revenue Office returned to full capacity. The facility had been closed since Friday, 22 May 2026, to undergo comprehensive interior and administrative renovations.
The facility officially reopened its doors on Tuesday, 09 June 2026. Management has encouraged ratepayers who suspect errors or discrepancies on their recent municipal utility statements to visit the newly upgraded Enquiries Counter for face-to-face assistance.
