JB Marks Local Municipality Honours Mandela Day Through Multi-Faceted Community Support and Engagement

The JB Marks Local Municipality engaged in a series of community-centered initiatives to mark Nelson Mandela Day, demonstrating a commitment to social development, youth outreach, and gender-based violence (GBV) awareness across several areas. The outreach efforts spanned multiple locations, focusing on addressing immediate socio-economic challenges, providing essential government services, and commemorating the legacy of Nelson Mandela through shared action.

Youth Empowerment and Men’s Health Initiative in Extension 6

On 17 July, the municipality initiated its Mandela Day activities at the Bacha Pele Youth Centre in Extension 6, hosting a specialized program targeted at men and boys. Organized with community partners and supported by local security services such as MEG Security, the initiative focused on health, safety, and community welfare.

As part of the outreach, practical support was provided to community members:

  • Clothing and Food Distribution: Volunteers organized clothing donations and distributed hot meals and fresh bread to attendees.

  • GBV and Femicide Prevention: Informational sessions and promotional flyers focused on national GBV hotspots, offering guidance on prevention, care, and support strategies.

  • On-Site Municipal and Safety Support: Municipal disaster management teams and public safety officers provided guidance and information directly to residents gathered at the site.

Housing Renovation Project in Extension 11, Ikageng

In Extension 11, Ward 01 (Ikageng), the JB Marks Local Municipality partnered with the Department of Social Development to undertake a housing renovation project. The targeted effort focused on restoring and refurbishing a Femicide family home.

Volunteers, community members, and officials joined hands to perform essential physical repairs:

  • Interior and Exterior Painting: Teams worked inside and outside the home, repainting walls and restoring structural aesthetics.

  • Family Support: Beyond physical restoration, the joint initiative aimed to offer tangible support and solidarity to a vulnerable family recovering from trauma, underscoring local government efforts to combat gender-based violence.

Literacy and Public Service Delivery at Matlwang Community Hall

The commemoration efforts extended to the Matlwang Community Hall, where local officials and residents convened for a multi-layered program centered on literacy, community dialogue, and government accessibility.

Key activities during the event included:

  • 67 Minutes of Shared Reading: Participants gathered with books in hand to observe the traditional 67 minutes of public service, promoting literacy among children and adults alike with displays featuring books, educational materials, and quotes from Nelson Mandela.

  • Community Dialogue and Performances: The gathering facilitated open discussions regarding local community development, supplemented by live cultural and artistic performances.

  • Essential Government Services: Representatives from various government departments set up service points at the hall, enabling residents to access administrative support, social services, and municipal assistance directly within their community.

The series of Nelson Mandela Day activities across Extension 6, Ikageng, and Matlwang demonstrated an integrated approach by the JB Marks Local Municipality and its partners to address social welfare, promote literacy, and support vulnerable community members. Through practical aid, physical renovations, and educational campaigns, the municipality observed the annual commemoration by bringing services directly to local residents.
