The wait is over, but the news is heavy for local motorists. The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) has officially confirmed the fuel price adjustments taking effect on Wednesday, 6 May 2026.
While the National Treasury’s emergency decision to keep the General Fuel Levy at near-zero levels has cushioned the blow, international oil pressures and a volatile Rand have still pushed prices to historic territory.

The Official Price Breakdown (Inland Zone 9C)
Residents across Gauteng and the North West (including the Potchefstroom and Klerksdorp hubs) will see the following changes at the pump:
Fuel Type | Official Increase | New Retail Price (Inland) |
Petrol 95 | R3.27 per litre | R26.63 |
Petrol 93 | R3.27 per litre | R26.22 |
Diesel 0.05% | R6.19 per litre | R26.29* |
Diesel 0.005% | R6.19 per litre | R26.54* |
*Note: Diesel prices are wholesale estimates; retail pump prices may vary slightly by station.
Why the massive jump?
The "Diesel Drubbing" of over R5.00 per litre is the result of a perfect storm. Brent Crude oil has surged past $110 per barrel due to ongoing supply fears in the Middle East.
Crucially, without the government’s intervention to scrap the diesel fuel levy for May, the increase would have been a staggering R8.89 per litre. While the current hike is painful, it represents a significant effort by the Treasury to prevent a total transport sector collapse.
Looking Toward June
This relief is a temporary bridge. The Treasury has signaled that the fuel levy will begin to be phased back in starting in June. Unless global oil prices see a dramatic retreat, motorists should prepare for another upward adjustment next month.
