Municipal Initiatives Drive Development, Safety, and Service Delivery in the City of Matlosana

The City of Matlosana is actively implementing a series of strategic initiatives aimed at upgrading public infrastructure, enforcing local by-laws, and supporting its community through economic and financial outreach. Through coordinated efforts involving multiple municipal departments, law enforcement, and external stakeholders, the municipality is working systematically to enhance public safety, maintain essential services, and foster local economic growth.

Law Enforcement Units Combat Illegal Activities in La Hoff

In a bid to address crime, enforce municipal by-laws, and restore public order, the City of Matlosana Law Enforcement Unit partnered with the South African Police Service (SAPS) to conduct a coordinated operation. Acting on community-driven intelligence, authorities searched a residential home in La Hoff where suspected illicit drugs, including tik and mandrax, were allegedly being sold. A suspect in his late twenties was arrested by SAPS in connection with these drug-related activities, and investigations remain ongoing.

As part of the same operation, officials cleared illegal traders operating along busy municipal corridors, specifically OR Tambo Road, Voortrekker Street, and Johanna van der Merwe Street. Goods belonging to traders operating without authorization were confiscated in accordance with the City's by-laws. The municipality commended the cooperation between law enforcement, SAPS, and vigilant residents, urging the public to continue reporting criminal activities and by-law violations through official channels.

Technical Teams Mitigate Sewer Spillages in Kanana

The City of Matlosana recently deployed its sewer technical team to Kanana to urgently resolve persistent sewer spillages affecting several streets in the area. The spillages, which had been reported over the preceding weeks, were caused by a severe combination of blockages, fat and debris build-up, and the illegal dumping of foreign objects into the municipal sewer network.

Technical crews carried out extensive unblocking and jetting of sewer mains and manholes, alongside detailed inspections of pipelines to identify structural damages and further blockages. To prevent future occurrences, the City has appealed to residents to refrain from disposing of wet wipes, sanitary products, cooking oil, stones, and other foreign materials into toilets and drains, citing these items as the primary causes of overflows.

Joint Task Force Cracks Down on Illegal Trading in Orkney

Continuing its multi-agency enforcement campaign, the City of Matlosana Law Enforcement Unit and SAPS conducted a successful joint operation to address illegal trading and by-law violations in the town of Orkney. During the operation, officials cleared unauthorized trading activities and confiscated 13 large bales of clothing from a hijacked building at the former Post Office, located at the corner of Flecker and Milton Streets.

The operation also led to the apprehension of seven undocumented foreign nationals by SAPS for further legal processing. Additionally, Environmental Health Practitioners from the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District conducted health inspections, issuing several compliance warnings regarding hygiene and public health standards. During these inspections, a large quantity of illegal skin-lightening cosmetic products was seized and condemned due to potential health risks posed to consumers.

Youth Empowerment Programme Connects Young Entrepreneurs to Opportunities

With a focus on local economic development, the City of Matlosana, in partnership with the Small Enterprise Development Finance Agency (SEDFA), hosted a major youth empowerment programme on Friday, 10 July 2026, at the Klerksdorp Auditorium Hall. Operating under the theme “We are here to listen: Empowering the youth through opportunities,” the event aimed to connect young entrepreneurs with essential funding, mentorship, and development resources.

The programme featured a welcoming address by the MMC for Local Economic Development (LED), Cllr Wesley Kgang, followed by an outline of the day's objectives by Ms Kedibone Nchwe from SEDFA. Programme Director Mr Jafta Seleke facilitated discussions alongside a panel of experts who shared insights on business development, including:

  • Mr Matthews Moatli – Productivity SA

  • Prof. Lerato E. Mdaka – North-West University (NWU)

The panel evaluated the presentations and selected winners, who will receive targeted funding based on their business needs, along with structured progress monitoring and mentorship. The City extended appreciation to participating stakeholders, including the National Development Agency (NDA), National Youth Development Agency (NYDA), Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality, JB Marks Local Municipality, and the Department of Economic Development, Environment, Conservation and Tourism.

Emergency Infrastructure Repairs Cause Water Disruption in Stilfontein

On Monday, 13 July 2026, the City of Matlosana Water Department announced an unplanned water supply interruption affecting the Stilfontein area. The interruption was necessitated by urgent repair work on burst water pipes located on Neethling Street, Britz Street, and the intersection of De Wit Street.

The technical team worked throughout the day to resolve the issue, with supply expected to be restored by 18:00. To mitigate the impact on residents, the municipality advised households to store water for essential domestic use and arranged for water tankers to deploy to the affected areas to provide temporary relief. The City apologized for the inconvenience caused while emergency repairs were finalized.

Traffic Department Upgrades Road Markings on Park Street

As part of its ongoing traffic infrastructure maintenance programme, the City of Matlosana Traffic Department carried out road maintenance on Park Street. On Monday, 13 July 2026, municipal officials painted road markings to enhance safety and visibility for both motorists and pedestrians.

This project forms part of a wider municipal initiative to upgrade traffic infrastructure, improve road safety, and reduce vehicular accidents across various streets in the city. Residents and motorists have been urged to exercise caution and obey all temporary road signs while maintenance teams are active.
