Significant portions of the JB Marks Local Municipality are currently grappling with a dual-utility crisis as severe storms have caused extensive power outages across the region, while scheduled maintenance and pipe repairs have resulted in water service interruptions.

The disruptions, which began over the weekend, have affected a broad range of residential, agricultural, and industrial zones, including Wilgeboom, Ikageng, Mooibank, and the Central Business District.
Critical Infrastructure Damage
The primary cause of the initial outages was a severe electrical storm during the early hours of Saturday, January 31. Lightning strikes targeted two electricity transformers in the Ikageng Greenfields area, resulting in total burnout of the units.
The recovery effort has been complicated by resource shortages. Official municipal communications indicate that local transformer stock has been exhausted, necessitating an emergency procurement process from external suppliers. Electricity restoration in the affected "Slabs Area" remains dependent on the delivery and installation of these new units.

Cascading Impact on Water Supply
The loss of electrical power has had a direct impact on water security in several areas, as pumping stations have been unable to maintain pressure. In response to the dry taps in the Wilgeboom and Wilge Street sectors, emergency water relief via tankers has been deployed to designated collection points. Residents have been advised to utilize private containers to secure potable water while repairs continue.
Further water disruptions are expected to commence on Monday, February 2, at 09:00. This is due to planned maintenance following a significant pipe burst identified near the N12 road. Residents in Potchefstroom Central have been warned of temporary supply interruptions with no confirmed timeline for restoration.

Widespread Grid Instability
The situation intensified on the night of February 1 and into the early morning of February 2, when a second wave of outages hit the town.
Reports of power loss emerged from:
The Bult and Walter Sisulu areas
Industrial zones
Residential streets including Richardson, Louw, and Parys Avenue
Local disaster management confirmed that while technicians were dispatched to address high-voltage cable faults and general outages, progress was hampered by ongoing storm activity. Safety protocols prevent technicians from performing high-voltage repairs during active lightning and heavy rain, leading to prolonged delays in several neighborhoods.
Current Status
While power has been successfully restored some areas, many plots and residential blocks remain without service. The municipality has acknowledged the inconvenience and noted that technicians are working through a backlog of faults caused by the weather.
Residents are encouraged to monitor official channels for updates on procurement timelines and the progress of the N12 water infrastructure repairs.
