It’s that time again. The speakers are being tuned, the dance shoes are getting dusted off, and performers from across South Africa are warming up their vocal cords. The A-Arts National Arts Festival is headed back to Potchefstroom this September and, like clockwork, the town is preparing for an onslaught of dramatic monologues, jazz hands, and high notes that could crack a windscreen.
A Tradition 23 Years in the Making
The A-Arts Festival isn’t some fly-by-night gig. It’s been churning out passionate performers since 2003. What started as a humble arts competition has grown into a national platform where drama, dance, and music collide in the best way possible.
Held in central South Africa with finals taking place in Upington, Bloemfontein, and Potchefstroom, the festival continues to draw in talent from all over. This year, Potchefstroom gets its moment in the spotlight on 20 September 2025, at Laerskool ML Fick, 203 Peter Mokaba Street.
Not Your Average Recital
Forget what you know about dusty community hall talent shows. A-Arts runs a tight, vibrant ship with categories that stretch far beyond the basics.
In the Dance division, competitors throw down in styles ranging from Ballet and Contemporary to Hip-hop, Tap, and even Breakdance. There’s room for everyone, from heritage and cultural performances to disco routines that would make the ‘70s proud.
Musicians and singers won’t be left in the lurch either. The music category spans everything from Classical and Light music to Modern arrangements across all instruments. And yes, there’s a choir section too, for those who prefer harmonising over solos.
Feeling a little Broadway? The Revue category’s got you covered.
Who’s It For?
The festival is tailored for drama, dance, and music academies looking to give their students a shot at a bigger stage. It's a chance for performers of all ages to not only compete but also to connect and grow.
And there’s no need to pretend you're performing in front of a mirror at home, this is your moment. Or, as the organisers put it: “Dance like no one is watching you. Bring the drama. Where words fail, music speaks.” (That’s a lot to live up to, but we believe in you.)
How to Get Involved
If you’re keen to throw your name into the hat – or at least your academy’s – registrations are open through the following links:
The entry deadline is 11 August, so if you’re the type to leave things to the last minute, consider this your very loud reminder.
The A-Arts Festival isn’t about glitz or glamour, it’s about giving performers a platform. Whether you’ve got a student who pirouettes in their sleep or a choir that gives goosebumps on cue, Potchefstroom is the place to be come September.
And if nothing else, it’s an excellent excuse to sit back and watch some top-notch talent do what they do best. Drama, dance, and a bit of organised chaos, sounds like a proper arts festival.
