Potchefstroom is widely known for its academic excellence, sporting culture, and community warmth, and nowhere do these elements come together better than at the Potchefstroom Parkrun. Held weekly, this free, timed 5km run welcomes everyone: from seasoned athletes and families with strollers to grandparents and first-time joggers. If you’re looking for a way to get fit, make friends, and enjoy the outdoors, all while staying right here in Potch, Parkrun might be your new Saturday tradition.

📍 What is Parkrun Potchefstroom?
Part of the global Parkrun network, Parkrun Potchefstroom takes place every Saturday morning at 08:00 at Kleinplaas, R53 Parys Avenue. It’s a free, community-based 5km event open to runners, joggers, and walkers of all ages and fitness levels. The goal? Not to race, but to show up, move, and connect. Participants simply register online once, receive a barcode, and scan it after each run to track their time and progress.
🏞️ The Route and Atmosphere
The Potchefstroom Parkrun route loops through the scenic greenery of Kleinplaas, featuring flat, wide paths that are pram- and dog-friendly. You’ll jog past trees, open lawns, and friendly volunteers cheering you on.
The event draws a diverse mix of locals, including:
North-West University students starting their weekend strong
Fitness-conscious families with kids in tow
Elderly residents who walk and talk their way through the course
Local dogs with tails wagging all the way to the finish
Whether you finish in 18 minutes or 58, the community vibe is supportive, welcoming, and proudly Potch.
🦺 Volunteer-Driven and Proudly Local
One of the unique aspects of Parkrun is that it’s entirely run by local volunteers. Each week, Potchefstroom residents sign up to marshal, time, scan barcodes, and cheer runners on. This creates a shared sense of ownership and turns each run into a community event. After each run, many participants gather at local cafés near the Bult to share coffee and conversation, a small-town ritual that extends the community feel.
