Ons Hulde Tehuis  is meer as net ’n bejaardesorgfasiliteit; dit is ’n toevlugsoord waar senior inwoners ná ’n lang lewensreis vrede, waardigheid en kameraadskap vind. In ’n tyd waarin familieverhoudings dikwels deur die gejaag van moderne lewe beproef word, vul Ons Hulde Tehuis ’n leemte deur ’n huislike omgewing te bied wat spesiaal ontwerp is om die fisiese, emosionele en sosiale behoeftes van bejaardes te voldoen. SAVF Ons Hulde Ouetehuis Agtergrond en Geskiedenis Ons Hulde Tehuis is sedert sy ontstaan ’n geliefde instelling in Potchefstroom. Alhoewel die presiese stigtingsdatum nie altyd maklik te vind is nie, is dit helder dat die tehuis oor dekades heen funksioneer as ’n kern van stabiliteit vir ouer gemeenskapslede. Die kerndienste sluit in: Woonkwartiere en Akkommodasie Die tehuis bied kamers aan wat ontwerp is om bejaardes se gerief en veiligheid te maksimeer. Daar is kombinasies van enkelkamers  (vir dié wat meer privaatheid wens) en gedeelde kamers  (vir maatskaplike interaksie en besparing op kos en bekostigbaarheid). Elke kamer is toegerus met basiese meubels, ’n rusbank, en ’n noodknoppie wat direk met die personeel verbind om in noodgevalle hulp te roep. Voorsiening van Etes Die kombuispersoneel berei daagliks drie maaltye  voor, ’n sitontbyt, middagete en aandete, volgens voedingsriglyne wat aangepas is vir bejaardes se gesondheidstoestande. Die etes is gesond, gebalanseerd en dikwels geïnspireer deur tradisionele Suid-Afrikaanse geregte. Vir baie inwoners is die maaltye ’n hoogtepunt van die dag waar hulle rondom die eettafel stories kan deel en mekaar se geselskap geniet. Mediese Toesig en Verpleegkundige Sorg ’n Gekwalifiseerde verpleegster is sowat 24 uur per dag op die perseel om mediese benodigdhede te hanteer. Dié diens sluit in: Gereelde kontroles van bloeddruk, bloedsuiker en ander vitale tekens. Toediening van medikasie volgens doktersvoorskrif. Wasgoed– en linneverversings gebeur minstens een keer per week, of meer gereeld indien die individu dit benodig. Die personeel sorg dat die voorkoms van die woonareas konsekwent netjies en geurvry bly. Sosiale en Rekreasieaktiwiteite Om eensaamheid te bekamp en breinkragtigheid aan te moedig, bied Ons Hulde Tehuis weeklikse en maandelikse aktiwiteite. Dit sluit in: Skaak-, kaart- en bingo-toernooie  om logiese denkwyse en sosiale kompetisie te bevorder. Kuns- en handwerkklasse , soos brei, borduur, en eenvoudige verfsessies. Liggaamlike oefensessies , aangepas vir seniors, wys hoe om ligte rek- en strekoefeninge te doen om buigsaamheid en balans te behou. Geleenthede vir verjaarsdae  en jubilea , waar familie- en gemeenskapslede inkom om hul liefde en waardering te wys. Gebeds- en Gemeenskapsdienste Alhoewel Ons Hulde Tehuis nie formeel ’n kerkvereniging is nie, word daar weekliks ’n ooreenstemmende gebedsbyeenkoms  gehou, waar inwoners, vrywilligers en plaaslike predikante saamkom vir refleksie, stiltetyd en lofliedere. Dit bied ’n spirituele hoeksteen vir dié wat hul geloof wil uitleef. SAVF Ons Hulde Ouetehuis Gemeenskapsbetrokkenheid en Samewerking Die sukses van Ons Hulde Tehuis berus grootliks op die toegeruste samewerking  tussen die tehuis en die omringende Potchefstroom-gemeenskap. Hierdie samewerking manifesteer in verskeie vorme: Finansiële Volhoubaarheid Die tehuis is deels afhanklik van maandelikse fooie  wat deur inwoners of hul familielede betaal word. Hierdie situasie plaas druk op bestuur om balans te handhaaf tussen bekostigbaarheid en kwaliteit van sorg. Aanvullende skenkings en gemeenskapsbydraes bly dus altyd noodsaaklik om te verseker dat geen inwoner ontneem word van basiese sorg en geriewe. Sorgpersoneel en Opleiding Met die landwye tekorte aan bekwame versorgers en verpleegkundiges, moet Ons Hulde Tehuis voortdurend aandag gee aan werwing, internskappe en opleiding.  Die tehuis moedig jong verpleegkundiges aan om tydelike of permanente posisies te oorweeg deur subtiele gebare soos borgskap van hul matriekbeurse in ruil vir diens en die aanbied van internskapse om ervaring op te doen. Deur die fokus op werkers se welstand te verskerp, byvoorbeeld deur afrigtingsessies oor werk-privaatlewe-balans, wil bestuur voorkom dat personeel moeg word en uitbrand, wat ’n negatiewe effek kan hê op sorggehalte. Originally created to serve male students living in town, Villagers is unique in that it has retained its original name and character while evolving alongside the university. Today, it remains a residence rooted in Christian values , with a strong emphasis on balance between academic life, sport, culture, and community involvement. A standout feature of Villagers is its emblem, Pegasus , the winged horse from Greek mythology. Pegasus is said to have created a spring that granted wisdom, and in Villagers, this symbol has been adopted to represent knowledge, pride, and purpose . Vision and Mission : The residence is guided by a commitment to spiritual grounding, continuous growth, and using past lessons to move forward. Its goal is to form adaptable, well-rounded men ready to contribute positively to the world around them. 🌺 Minjonet Dameskoshuis – Growth Through Grace Minjonet, founded on 11 September 2001 , is a relatively young but deeply values-driven women’s residence. Inspired by the minjonet flower , which represents dignity and the realization of full potential, the koshuis provides an environment where every resident is encouraged to pursue her unique identity with confidence and pride. Symbolism  plays a large role in Minjonet’s culture. The umbrella , part of their formal attire and ceremonial oath, is a powerful reminder of protection, resilience, and spiritual connection. This visual tradition unites residents under shared aspirations and principles. Minjonet places great value on Christ-centred living , integrity, and community strength, helping students grow not just as individuals, but as contributors to society. 🕊️ Huis Republiek – The House of Freedom Huis Republiek  is a women’s residence that champions individuality, community, and spirited student life. Known for its vibrant corridor culture , each of the eight corridors has a unique identity and is managed by a corridor head (HK-lid) who ensures resident well-being. Notably, Republiek is one of the few residences that offers private single rooms from first year , which enhances comfort while maintaining strong group bonds. Huis Republiek thrives on community while respecting individuality, an ideal combination for students seeking a strong, supportive environment without sacrificing personal identity. 🏢 Oppirif Senior Residence – Practical Living for Academic Focus Oppirif Senior Residence  serves a critical role on campus, offering a structured and supportive space for senior undergraduates and postgraduate students . With room for 504 residents across 42 blocks , this residence is designed for focused living while still preserving a sense of community. Each block houses six units , with two single rooms per unit , offering privacy without complete isolation. Shared bathrooms and kitchens promote cooperation and interaction, while residents supply their own appliances to fit personal preferences. As a powerful Cut-Off Low (COL) system builds off South Africa’s southwestern coast, the North West Province, home to Potchefstroom and its surrounding communities, faces an unusually severe winter spell beginning this weekend. According to a media release from the South African Weather Service (SAWS) dated 5 June 2025, all provinces except Limpopo stand to see impactful snowfall, plunging temperatures and gale-force winds. COL System to Sweep In from Saturday SAWS forecasts that, early on Saturday morning (7 June 2025) , the COL system will move in from the Western Cape and Northern Cape before migrating eastward. By Monday and Tuesday (9–10 June) , the cold front is expected to settle over the central interior, including North West. Forecasters emphasize that the COL will bring a “significant and dramatic drop in daytime temperatures” , with maxima unlikely to exceed +10 °C  throughout North West, and localised wind chill driving perceived temperatures well below zero on high ground. Potchefstroom, typically known for chilly winters, should expect raw, gusty conditions that may dip into single digits by midday and approach freezing overnight. Local farmers with small stock, sheep, goats and cattle, are urged to move vulnerable animals into sheltered enclosures, provide thick bedding and ensure access to unfrozen water. With strong, damaging surface winds  expected across the central interior from Sunday onward , the risk of veld fires in the days preceding the cold front remains elevated; however, once the COL fully arrives, extreme cold, snow and ice will become the primary hazards. Snowfall Prospects in North West One of the most eye-catching elements of SAWS’s winter outlook is “snowfalls over almost every province, with the exception of Limpopo.”  In North West, snowfall confidence is highest along elevated terrain, particularly between Ventersdorp, Klerksdorp and Mahikeng and lower over the western farmlands, though scattered flurries remain possible even in lower-lying areas. SAWS notes a “low probability that Gauteng and the highveld region of Mpumalanga may experience light snowfalls Monday night, 9 June 2025, extending into Tuesday, 10 June 2025.”   By extension, North West’s highveld towns, Ventersdorp and parts of the Tswaing District, could see similar light dustings. 7–9 June 2025: Initial Flurries (1–5 cm) Mahikeng & Ventersdorp:  Light flurries may begin late Saturday or early Sunday, with 1–5 cm  possible on higher ridges. Klerksdorp & Surrounds:  From Sunday into Monday (“SUN-MON”), scattered patches of 1–5 cm  near the Gatsrand Range are likely, with brief whiteout conditions on rural gravel roads. Potchefstroom:  Localised hail and graupel (soft hail) showers overnight Saturday into Sunday; temperatures will hover around 0 °C after sunset, but significant accumulation is unlikely in the town itself. 8–10 June 2025: Coldest Lows and Possible Accumulations (5–10 cm) Mahikeng Highlands & Magaliesberg Foothills:  The SUN-MON  map shows a narrow band of 5–10 cm  (light blue shading) along crest-level roads and farms. These accumulations may cause road blockages between the Molopo and Vryburg logging routes. Ventersdorp–Klerksdorp Corridor:  “MON-TUES” projections hint at 5–10 cm  of snow on mountaintops overlooking the Hartebeestfontein area, potentially forcing short-term closures on Route R30 between Ventersdorp and Klerksdorp. Potchefstroom Region:  Although Potchefstroom itself resides at a lower elevation (~1 350 m), frost and icy patches on rural roads are almost guaranteed Monday morning. Residents should prepare for subzero wind chills and uncertain, slick conditions on access routes to Coligny and Leeudoringstad. Impact on Commuters, Schools and Community Services Monday morning’s commute  is poised to be particularly treacherous. Even a light layer of snow or frost on the N12 and R501 could cause multiple fender-benders if drivers fail to reduce speed. SAWS strongly advises: Reducing speed  on early-morning commutes, especially between 05:00 and 08:00 when roads will be at their slickest. Equipping vehicles  with winter tyres (where possible), or at minimum ensuring good tread on existing tyres. Allowing extra travel time  and, if possible, postponing non-essential travel until after midday when some melting may occur—though be aware that temperatures remain well below 10 °C even then, so partial refreezing is possible. Public transport operators  (taxis, buses) should communicate delays and consider contingency plans for alternative routes if primary roads become impassable. Schools in the North West Department of Education  have indicated contingency measures in event of road closures. Pupils living outside Potchefstroom (e.g., Casterbridge, Orkney, Stilfontein) may find transport services disrupted. Parents are encouraged to stay tuned to school SMS alerts and local radio for updates. Potchefstroom University’s campus (NWU Mafikeng and Potchefstroom campuses) warns students and staff that classes may shift to hybrid or online models Tuesday if road conditions remain hazardous. Livestock, Agriculture and Power Supply Concerns Potchefstroom’s surrounding farming community must brace for “bitterly cold daytime conditions”  exacerbated by “strong, gusty winds.”  Grain farmers in the Mooi River Valley should ensure that irrigation systems are winterised to prevent pipe bursts. Sheep farmers, in particular, should relocate ewes nearing lambing to wind-protected sheds, as hypothermia risk soars when newborn lambs are exposed to sudden temperature drops below 0 °C. While the scale of this crisis may seem overwhelming, it is precisely our local communities, neighbours, friends, schools, churches, campus societies, and community policing forums, that have the power to change the story. This article examines the latest national statistics, highlights how those figures translate into Potchefstroom’s own experience, and outlines practical steps every resident can take to protect loved ones and help survivors. The National Picture: A Crisis in Numbers South Africa’s GBV (gender-based violence) epidemic shows little sign of letting up. In the 2022/2023 financial year alone, the SAPS recorded over 53 000 sexual offences , including roughly 43 000 reported rapes , an average of 114 rapes per day nationwide. Experts estimate actual incidents are even higher, since many survivors never report to the police. Equally harrowing are the femicide figures. In 2021, the South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) found that an average of three women are killed by an intimate partner every day , a rate nearly six times the global norm. Die 1960’s was ’n dekade van vastigheid, talent en volgehoue oorwinning vir Potchefstroom Dorp Rugbyklub. Met verskeie Claassens aan die stuur, onder andere Johan, Ernst en later Sandt Claassen, het die klub nie net trofeë gewen nie, maar ook ’n onwrikbare kultuur van samewerking en prestasie gevestig. Hierdie was die jare waarin die naam "Dorp" sinoniem geword het met strukturele spel, harde verdediging en ’n ongeëwenaarde gees van broederskap. Die dekade se oorwinnings is behaal danksy ’n fyn balans van afrigting, gemeenskapsbetrokkenheid en legendariese spelers wat hul harte op Olënpark gelos het. 1956: Ernst Claassen neem die leisels oor In 1956 het die kapteinskap oorgegaan van Johan Claassen na sy broer, Ernst Claassen . Onder Ernst se leiding het Dorp daardie jaar weer die Blikbeker  ingepalm. Bekende name in die span sluit in: J. Viviers, J. Lategan, J. Strydom, F. Bezuidenhout, H. Kriek, D. Kotzé, en P.J. Smit. Hierdie span het nie net gewen nie, maar het ’n voorbeeld gestel van dissipline, tegniek en samewerking. Teen 1967  het Jan Heenop , ’n veteraan en ervare speler, die span gelei in een van sy beste seisoene. Heenop was bekend vir sy taktiese insig en sy vermoë om spanlede te motiveer. Onder sy leiding het Dorp nie net goed gevaar nie, maar hulle teenstanders met skoon tegniek en harde spel getrotseer. Potchefstroom Dorp Rugbyklub 1965–1966: Twee briljante seisoene In 1965  het Dorp uitstekende rugby gespeel en spog met spelers soos J. Esterhuizen, E. Claassen, P. van Vuuren, en V. Swanepoel . Die volgende jaar, in 1966 , het Sandt Claassen  die kapteinskap oorgeneem. Die span het voortgebou op vorige suksesse en weereens hul stempel afgedruk in Wes-Transvaal. Dié jare is gekenmerk deur spanbalans, met gevestigde spelers in die voorry, rats agterspelers, en diep bankbreedte. Claassen  as afrigter en Jan Heenop  as kaptein, het Dorp ’n groep jonger spelers ingespan, insluitend H. Roos, D. Jacobs, V. Swanepoel en W. Swart, wat met ywer en passie gespeel het. Die kultuur van spanbou en leierskap wat in die vroeë vyftigerjare begin het, het nou vrugte afgewerp in die vorm van spelers wat lojaliteit en vaardigheid in gelyke mate vertoon het. Potchefstroom Dorp Rugbyklub 1968: Eerstespan en Tweedespan blink uit Teen 1968  het Potch Dorp se rugbystruktuur uitgebrei met suksesvolle eerstespan én tweedespan spanne. Die eerstespan, onder president J. Jacobs  en afrigter S. Swanepoel , het bestaan uit beproefde name soos E. Claassen, H. Pienaar, J. Kotzé en J. Esterhuizen. Die tweedespan  het onder leiding van H. Pretorius  gestaan en het hul plek in die geskiedenis verdien met uitslae wat nie te na gekom het aan die eerstespan nie. Jong spelers soos T. Blignaut, J. Jacobs en Phillip Burger het opgestaan as toekomstige kernlede van die klub. Potchefstroom Dorp Rugbyklub 1969: Volharding bring vrug In 1969  het André Kotzé  die tweede span as kaptein gelei, met 'n kernspan wat steeds bestaan het uit belowende jong spelers. Die klub het bewys dat hul sukses nie net afhang van sterre nie, maar van 'n goed gesmeerde struktuur waar ontwikkeling net soveel waarde gehad het as trofeë. Potchefstroom Dorp Rugbyklub 'n Dekade wat Dorp verewig het Wanneer ’n mens vandag terugkyk na die 1960’s, sien jy nie net rye spantrofeë op die rakke nie, jy sien ’n era wat Potchefstroom Dorp Rugbyklub se identiteit gekerf het in die geskiedenis van Wes-Transvaalse rugby. Dit was die jare van strukture, van eer en van lojaliteit; van familienaam-herhaling in spanne en generasies wat dieselfde kleure met trots gedra het. Tussen Junie en September  is die risiko van veldbrande op sy hoogste, en dit neem slegs een vonk om ’n verwoestende vuur aan die brand te steek. Elke jaar laat veldbrande in Suid-Afrika ’n spoor van skade. In 2023 alleenlik  het veldbrande in die Noordwes-provinsie sowat 38 000 hektaar  weiding vernietig, plaasaktiwiteite ontwrig en infrastruktuur in landelike gebiede beskadig. Die omliggende gebiede van Potchefstroom, veral plase in Mooibank, Vyfhoek, en die buitewyke van Ikageng, bly kwesbaar as gevolg van hoë, droë gras en beperkte natuurlike brandbreke. Volgens die Suid-Afrikaanse Weerdiens  kom veldbrande die meeste voor tydens die winter wanneer die relatiewe humiditeit daal tot onder 30%. Bergwinde , warmer, droë winde wat vanaf hoëliggende gebiede waai, is een van die hoofoorsake waarom brande vinnig versprei, veral vroegoggend en laatmiddag. Vrywilligers: Eerste op die toneel, dikwels alleen In landelike gebiede soos dié van JB Marks-munisipaliteit is formele brandweerdienste afhanklik van vrywillige noodeenhede . Hierdie gemeenskapsgebaseerde spanne bestaan uit opgeleide maar onbetaalde  individue wat dikwels die eerste is om op toneel aan te meld, veral op plekke wat moeilik bereikbaar is. Anders as amptelike brandweerafdelings, ontvang hierdie vrywilligers geen gereelde befondsing  nie. Hulle werk met beperkte hulpbronne, hergebruik toerusting, en maak staat op die gemeenskap vir ondersteuning, veral tydens lang, uitputtende brande. Waarom Skenkings van kardinale belang is Wanneer brande aktief is, kan vrywilligers tussen 8 en 12 uur  aaneen op die vuurlyn spandeer. In sulke omstandighede verloor die liggaam vinnig vloeistowwe, en sonder behoorlike hidrasie en voeding is hul veiligheid en werkvermoë ernstig in gevaar. Skenkings van bottelwater, energiedrankies, elektrolietpoeiers, proteïenstawe, neutemengsels en ander peuselhappies  is dus van kritieke belang. Hierdie bydraes help om uitputting, dehidrasie en hittesteek te voorkom, terwyl dit energie verskaf om op hul taak te bly fokus. In vorige jare het die Potchefstroomse gemeenskap met groot milddadigheid betrokke geraak. Dit was ‘n aand vol waardering vir die harde werk, opoffering en spanwerk van elke atleet. Die byeenkoms het ook omliggende laerskole se top atlete verwelkom – ’n teken van groei in die Gimmie-atletiekfamilie.’n Groot dankie aan The Roots Lifestyle Centre vir die pragtige lokaal en heerlike kos. 🌿 Dis nie net sport wat hierdie week skyn nie, die FAK (Federasie van Afrikaanse Kultuurvereniginge) het ook Gimmie-leerders erken wat in Afrikaans Huistaal uitgeblink het. 🎓 Afrikaans is nie net ’n vak nie, dis deel van wie ons is. Hierdie leerders het gewys dat hulle hul taal liefhet én verstaan.Dankie aan elke ouer, onderwyser en ondersteuner wat die pad saam met hulle stap. 🎉 Majorette-pret in Potch!
