Potch – julle is volgende. Nou toer hulle rêrig. Image: Facebook: Radioraps

  • Die Dromers Mark Returns to Anderland for an Autumn Weekend Out - 10 May

Die Dromers Mark is rolling back into Potchefstroom for its second market of the year, and not just anywhere, back to where the dream first took root. The beloved seasonal market returns to Anderland, the original venue, and promises a relaxed weekend blend of local flair, creativity, and live tunes. It’s happening on Saturday and Sunday, 10–11 May, from 10:00 to 15:00 at 241 Plaas Oudedorp 376 IQ, Potch. Market Roots and Dreamy Intentions This isn’t your average flea market. Die Dromers Mark was born from the idea of three friends who decided they’d had enough of the “everyday grind” and wanted to build something a bit more inspired. The market has since become a platform for like-minded makers and dreamers to connect, create, and collaborate. The aim? Keep dreaming, and maybe sell a few handmade candles while you’re at it. What to Expect Entry is R50.00 per adult, while kids under 12 get in for mahala. The vibe is relaxed, with a focus on handcrafted goods, good food, and live music that won’t make your ears regret coming. There’s also a play area and children’s activities, so if the little ones are tagging along, they’ll be sorted. Anderland Draaipunt-Kafeee provides the backdrop, think green lawns, open air, and plenty of space to throw down a picnic blanket (which you're encouraged to bring). There’s also coffee, bubbly, and enough sweet snacks to test your self-control. Fur Babies and Fine Weather Dogs? Yes. Just keep them leashed and well-mannered, nobody likes a sugar-high dachshund tearing through artisanal soap stalls. As always, the market is an outdoor affair, so check the skies and maybe pack a hat. Or don’t. Up to you. A Hint of Mother's Day With Mother’s Day coming up, this market could easily double as a clever (and last-minute) plan. There’s a strong lineup of unique products, a few spots to sit and sip something sparkly, and plenty of local charm that beats elbowing through mall aisles. You’ll even look thoughtful. Just saying. Practical Bits Dates:10–11 May 2025 (Saturday & Sunday) Time:10:00 to 15:00 Venue:Anderland, 241 Plaas Oudedorp 376 IQ, Potchefstroom Tickets:R50 per personKids under 12: Free Ticket Sales : https://dromers.company.site/products/ (Note: Tickets are non-refundable, so maybe don’t lose them in the washing machine.) Whether you’re there for the music, the muffins, or the meaningful mugs, Die Dromers Mark is a decent way to spend your weekend. Just don’t forget your picnic blanket. Or your kids. Or your dog.

  • Community Rallies Behind PAWS Potchefstroom with Donations and Support

April 2025 saw a wave of generosity from the Potchefstroom community, all in aid of the animals at PAWS (Potch Animal Welfare Society). From food and blankets to technical support and a surprise kitty tent, every bit of help counted. And while it might’ve felt like a small gesture to some, the folks at PAWS want everyone to know: it meant everything. Cosy Cats and Culinary Comforts Francois Fouché made a feline-friendly delivery that caused quite a stir, not among the humans, but among the cats. He dropped off a pet tent that had one curious kitty claiming it before it was even zipped up. Alongside the tent came a generous stash of cat food, ensuring full tummies for days to come. PAWS extended their heartfelt thanks, noting that the kittens will be both safe and snug thanks to Francois’ thoughtful donation. Potch Gas Fires Up Daily Pet Meals Without gas, there’s no warm food, and cold pellets aren’t much of a gourmet treat. Thankfully, Potch Gas Technical & Appliances stepped up, making sure the PAWS kitchen kept cooking. Thanks to their consistent supply of gas, warm meals for the dogs were sorted. The team at PAWS gave a big shoutout to the business, saying, “Ons waardeer julle opreg!” (We truly appreciate you!) Till Slips Turned into Tuna Sometimes small actions, like dropping your till slip in a box, lead to big results. Thanks to Pick n Pay Van der Hoff Park’s slip donation initiative, PAWS was able to stock up on cat food for their fabulous felines. A full trolley of 1.75kg bags made its way into the shelter, and every packet was a win for whiskers. PAWS Powered Back Online by Einstein Electrical It wasn’t all food and fluff. Behind the scenes, PAWS faced a serious issue when their electricity went out. With fridges full of meat and sick animals in need of care, this wasn’t just an inconvenience,it was a crisis. Enter Ivan Leach from Einstein Electrical , who jumped in, fixed the issue, and got the lights (and fridges) back on. No fanfare, just good work done well. PAWS summed it up best: “Dankie vir jou onbaatsugtige hulpverlening!” (Thank you for your selfless assistance!) “To everyone who donated food, blankets, treats, or time: thank you. Whether it was captured in a photo or not, your kindness is felt every day in every full bowl and every warm tail wag. ‘No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.’ – Aesop.” Dankie aan al ons donateurs! Whether it was a tent, some chow, or just a bit of electricity, PAWS Potchefstroom is stronger (and fluffier) thanks to you.

  • Is Your Smartphone Really Dirtier than a Toilet

Decoding the headline, the evidence, and what it means for everyday hygiene Where did the claim come from? The sound-bite that “your cellphone carries 10 × more bacteria than a toilet seat ” traces back to work by University of Arizona microbiologist Prof. Charles Gerba in the early 2010s. Gerba’s lab swabbed multiple classroom and office objects and found that the mean bacterial load on phones was an order of magnitude higher than on nearby toilet seats. Popular outlets—from TIME  magazine to consumer watchdog Which? —have repeated the figure, often to illustrate just how rarely most of us clean our devices. What the research actually shows Study / Source Sample & setting Key finding University of Arizona laboratory survey (USA) 25 public-use toilets vs. 25 mobiles Phones averaged 10×  the total bacterial count of toilet seats London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (UK) 390 hand/phone swabs across 12 cities 16 %  of phones carried faecal E. coli ; 92 % held some bacteria Which? consumer test (UK) 30 tablets/phones vs. office toilet seat Staph counts:  tablet 600 CFU, phone 140 CFU, toilet seat < 20 CFU 2024 scoping review (56 studies, 24 countries) Healthcare & community Phones consistently harboured Staph aureus , E. coli , and drug-resistant strains; contamination rates 40 – 90 % 2023 ATP swab study (UK) 250 consumer handsets 52 %  “heavily” contaminated; overall, phones up to 6 ×  germier than toilet seats Take-away:   While the exact “10 ×” multiplier varies by study, the underlying pattern is consistent—most phones host far more microbes, and more diverse microbes, than the average (regularly-cleaned) toilet seat . Why are phones so grubby? Hands, hands, hands  – We touch our phones hundreds of times per day, often between different environments, and seldom wash them afterward. Warm & humid micro-climate  – The heat from batteries and pockets provides an incubator for bacterial growth. Bathroom habits  – Roughly 60 % of users admit to scrolling on the loo; toilet plumes aerosolise faecal bacteria that settle on devices ( Time ). Never (or rarely) disinfected  – A quarter of people say they never  clean their phone. Toilets: cleaner than their reputation Modern toilet seats in homes and offices are typically non-porous plastic, cleaned with detergents, flushed upright (reducing splash-back) and left to dry—conditions that limit bacterial survival. In several datasets seats averaged < 50 CFU/in² , versus hundreds to thousands  on phones. Should you worry? Most organisms detected are harmless skin commensals, but  potentially pathogenic species, including MRSA, Streptococcus , Pseudomonas  and multi-drug-resistant Staph aureus , turn up regularly. For healthy individuals the risk is low; for hospital patients, young children, and immunocompromised people, phones can act as a fomite that leap-frogs infection-control barriers. Five practical ways to keep your phone (and you) healthier Habit How to do it safely Wipe daily Use a 70 % isopropyl-alcohol wipe or an alcohol-based screen spray on a microfibre cloth. Avoid bleach or soaking. Hands first Wash hands thoroughly before meals, after the bathroom, and after public transport ; clean phone next. Leave it out of the loo Park the phone outside the bathroom—or at least shut the lid before flushing. Case & accessories Silicone cases, PopSockets and earbuds also carry germs—wash with warm soapy water weekly. UV-C or antimicrobial glass? Lab tests show UV-C boxes can achieve 99 % kill in 5 minutes; antimicrobial screen protectors merely slow growth, they don’t self-disinfect. Myth-busting quick facts “More bacteria = more danger.”  Not always. Pathogen type and entry route matter more than raw counts. “Toilet seats are filthy.”  On average, kitchen sponges, cutting boards, and yes—phones—harbour higher loads. “Alcohol ruins screens.”  Apple, Samsung and others now confirm 70 % alcohol wipes are safe for modern oleophobic glass (avoid abrasive cloths). Bottom line The “dirtier than a toilet”  headline is sensational—but broadly true. Phones accumulate microbes precisely because they travel everywhere and  dodge our regular cleaning routines. A 30-second wipe and better hand-washing habits are inexpensive insurance against passing those germs back to your mouth, eyes, or a vulnerable family member this winter. If you’re willing to disinfect a toilet sea t, your pocket super-computer certainly deserves the same courtesy. Did you know? • South Africa’s 2025 Flu Season Arrives Early

Why Clean Hands (and a Few Other Simple Habits) Matter More Than Ever 2025: The earliest start in 15 years The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) officially declared the start of the 2025 influenza season in week 13 (24 March – 30 March) . That is four weeks earlier than the 2024 season and the earliest onset since 2010 . Laboratory data from the NICD’s pneumonia-surveillance network show that influenza A(H3N2)  is the dominant strain, accounting for roughly 68 %  of confirmed cases so far. Health authorities warn that an early start often signals a longer, potentially more severe season. Handwashing: a low-tech shield that cuts illness nearly in half Decades of evidence from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) show that proper hand hygiene can prevent up to 40 – 50 % of avoidable respiratory infections , including flu. By physically removing or destroying virus-laden droplets picked up from people and surfaces, hand-washing disrupts one of the main transmission routes for influenza. Mastering the 20-second wash Wet  hands with clean, running water. Lather  with soap—palms, backs, between fingers, under nails. Scrub for at least 20 seconds  (hum “Happy Birthday” twice). Rinse  under running water. Dry  thoroughly with a clean towel or air-dryer. Soap’s surfactants break apart the virus envelope, and the mechanical action sends the fragments down the drain. Alcohol-based sanitiser (≥ 60 %) is a good fallback when water is unavailable, but nothing beats soap-and-water for visibly dirty hands. When to wash Before and after preparing or eating food After using the toilet, changing nappies, or helping a child in the bathroom After coughing, sneezing, or blowing your nose After caring for someone who is ill After touching animals, waste, or gardening soil Whenever you return home from public spaces These moments mirror the NICD and WHO’s priority list for interrupting flu transmission in communities. Beyond clean hands – layers of defence for the 2025 season Layer Why it matters Practical tips & South-African context Annual flu vaccination Still the single most effective  way to prevent severe illness and death—especially important with the early H3N2-dominant season Public clinics and most pharmacies offer the trivalent or quadrivalent jab; aim to vaccinate March–April , but it’s never too late Good respiratory etiquette Stops droplets at the source Cough or sneeze into a tissue/elbow; dispose of tissues immediately; wash hands afterwards Stay home when sick Reduces workplace/school outbreaks NICD advises at least 24 h fever-free without medication  before returning Improve indoor air Flu spreads in poorly ventilated spaces Open windows, use fans, or HEPA filters where possible—especially taxis, classrooms, offices Masks in crowded settings Adds a barrier where distancing is hard Consider on taxis, in clinics, or during large indoor gatherings—especially if you’re high-risk Surface hygiene Viruses can survive ≥ 24 h on non-porous surfaces Disinfect “high-touch” points (door handles, cell-phones, POS machines) daily Healthy immune basics A robust immune system reduces severity Balanced diet, ≥ 7 h sleep, regular exercise, adequate hydration, stop smoking Who should be extra-vigilant? Adults ≥ 65 years Children < 2 years Pregnant women People living with HIV, TB, diabetes, heart, lung, or kidney disease , obesity, or weakened immunity These groups account for the bulk of flu-related hospitalisations in South Africa; early vaccination and strict hygiene provide outsized benefit. The bottom line An unseasonably early influenza season means the virus already has a head-start. Fortunately, the tools to blunt its impact are straightforward: get vaccinated, wash hands correctly and often, practise good cough etiquette, improve ventilation, and stay home when ill . Layering these habits protects not only you but the broader community—particularly our most vulnerable neighbours—as winter tightens its grip. Sticking to these basics could keep thousands of South Africans out of clinics, save businesses lost productivity days, and, most importantly, prevent avoidable hospitalisations and deaths in 2025. • Stroom Stories: A Quiet Revolution – The Silent Book Club of Potchefstroom

In a world that often feels too loud, fast, and overwhelming, two women in Potchefstroom have created a pocket of peace and it’s changing lives. Welcome to the Silent Book Club, a local initiative led by Zandri Troskie‑Naudé and Bianca Potgieter, where introverts are celebrated, social anxiety is soothed, and silence becomes a shared experience. Image: Pieter with Zandri Troskie‑Naudé and Bianca Potgieter From TikTok to Transformation Zandri, a long-time Potchefstroom resident, stumbled upon the concept of a silent book club while scrolling TikTok. Inspired by its quiet charm, she discovered it was an international movement with over 1,500 registered clubs worldwide. Instead of joining an existing one, she made an impulsive yet life-changing decision: to start a chapter right here in Potchefstroom. With a quick registration on the official Silent Book Club website, followed by the creation of local Facebook and Instagram pages, the Potchefstroom branch was born. After the second meetup, Zandri realized she needed help managing the growing interest. That’s when Bianca stepped up, eager to get involved and a dynamic partnership began. A Club Where You Don’t Have to Talk Unlike traditional book clubs, there’s no assigned reading, no pressure to socialize, and no expectation to speak. Members bring whatever they’re reading, be it a thriller, a Bible, or even a personal journal and simply sit together in silence for an hour. Before and after the reading time, light conversation is optional. The result? A welcoming, judgment-free environment where people can connect, or not, on their own terms. Both Zandri and Bianca describe themselves as introverts with social anxiety, and they’ve made it their mission to create a safe space for others like them. Some attendees don’t speak a word during their first meetups. Others slowly ease into small talk or discover they’re reading the same book as someone across the table. It’s all about comfort, quiet, and community. Twice a Month, Two Cozy Spots The Silent Book Club meets twice a month, alternating between two beloved local venues: Cuppa Caffé and Blank Canvas. Saturdays at noon are dedicated to reading, resting, and recharging. There’s no entry fee, just the cost of a coffee or muffin, often with special “book club” combo deals offered by the cafes. The setting is calm, friendly, and perfect for focus. Even those who don’t read much are welcome. As Bianca shared, some members bring crafts or prayer books. Others come just to be in a peaceful space. More Than Just Books: Community, Growth, and Giving Back The impact of the club extends beyond literature. For Bianca, it’s become a creative haven where she’s working on her first novel. For Zandri, it’s been a confidence-building journey, one that took her from nervous host to self-assured community leader. The club also fosters real connections. People have found friends, moments of calm, and the encouragement to challenge themselves. The feedback from members has been overwhelmingly positive, especially around the rare opportunity to unplug from screens and experience genuine stillness. Looking ahead, the Silent Book Club Potchefstroom has big dreams. Plans include author readings, a mini-library swap system (bring-a-book, take-a-book), and monthly competitions. In June, they’re launching a raffle where the top prize is a luxury book box packed with special edition hardcovers and treats, with proceeds going toward community causes like the Bark Park for dogs. The Power of a Quiet Space What started as a spontaneous decision has grown into a quiet movement. It’s a space for the socially anxious, the overworked, the overwhelmed, and anyone who just needs a moment of stillness. It’s also a reminder that community doesn’t always need to be loud to be meaningful. If you’re in Potchefstroom and looking for a place to recharge, connect, or simply read in silence, the Silent Book Club may be the unexpected answer you didn’t know you needed. 📚 Follow them on Facebook and Instagram: Silent Book Club Potchefstroom 🗓️ Join their next meetups at Cuppa Caffé or Blank Canvas Click on the button below for the interview in Afrikaans #TheGoToGuy #Stroomstories #potchgazette #potchefstroom #silentbookclub

Putting Out Fires Without Calling the Brigade: 4 June 2025 On 4 June, the spotlight moves to Basic Fire Fighting Level 2. For R980, this one-day course gives learners the lowdown on dealing with the kind of fires that can pop up in homes and offices, places where people burn toast or leave laptop chargers under piles of paper. The training includes managing and extinguishing fires, and as with all the courses, lunch and refreshments are part of the deal. Fire safety plus a bite to eat? You could do worse for a Wednesday. Health and Safety Without the Clipboards: 5 June 2025 The final course, Apply Occupational Health, Safety and Environmental Principles as REP Level 3, is on 5 June and costs R1050 per person. This one is for those designated as SHE Reps, health and safety representatives—who need to know how to spot workplace hazards and make sure they don’t become workplace headlines. The session covers identifying and managing risks, ensuring the workplace is as safe as reasonably possible (because nothing is ever 100% safe when Kevin from HR still uses that dodgy kettle). Of course, lunch and refreshments are included. Attending all 4 days at a discount price of R2980. Adding extra excitement to the early-April sale, Build It Potch offered a prize giveaway campaign  to reward its customers. During the promotion period, anyone who spent R500 or more  in-store stood a chance to win big – including the possibility of winning one of seven Hyundai H100 “bakkie” pickup trucks , or one of 360 grocery hampers worth R1,000 each . This generous competition (running from 25 March to 5 April) drew many participants eager to not only improve their homes but also possibly drive away with a brand-new bakkie, linking everyday shopping with the thrill of a lucky draw. Not long after that promotion concluded, Build It Potchefstroom rolled out another April campaign  to keep the momentum going.
