The JB Marks Local Municipality  has announced a scheduled water supply shutdown  on Monday, 20 October 2025 , affecting Potch Industria , Ikageng Proper , and surrounding areas. The temporary interruption is part of a planned project to replace dysfunctional valves  at the Ikageng Water Pump Station , aimed at improving long-term water reliability and pressure. Valve Replacement: Scheduled Maintenance for System Efficiency According to the municipality’s notice, the shutdown will begin at 06:00  and continue until late in the day as technical teams carry out the valve replacements. The Ikageng Water Pump Station  supplies multiple areas, including Potch Industria , Old Ikageng , and parts of the CBD , and the work forms part of a broader initiative to enhance the efficiency and safety of the water distribution system . Residents and business owners are urged to store sufficient water in advance  for domestic and operational needs. While the work is ongoing, water supply will be temporarily interrupted or significantly reduced . Ward 15 Update: Leak Repair and Tree Removal Preparations The water leak is located behind a dense line of trees next to the railway , where water continues to pump at an estimated pressure of 1.5 bar . Access to the site is currently restricted, as it cannot be reached via Soetdoring Street  or the N12  due to overgrown vegetation and terrain conditions. In alignment with the municipal maintenance plan, Ward 15 Councillor and the Parks Department , led by Wilfred and his team , have initiated preparatory work in the affected zone. On Thursday, the team began removing trees and clearing the area  to provide access for heavy vehicles and repair crews. Over the weekend, a TLB (tractor-loader-backhoe)  will be used to complete the clearance  so that the Infrastructure Department  can access the leak site with their trucks. The Infrastructure Team , under the supervision of Fanie Zoko , is scheduled to repair the water leak on the same day  as the valve replacement to minimize disruption. This coordinated approach means that residents will experience only one day without water instead of two , a proactive measure aimed at improving efficiency and minimizing inconvenience. Orkney, 15 October 2025: A tragic incident has rocked the Orkney community after two residents lost their lives and another was hospitalised while attempting to unblock a sewer that had been overflowing in their street for several months. Image: The Go-To Guy Creations The incident occurred on Tuesday morning on the corner of Shakespeare and Wordsworth Streets, where residents, frustrated by what they described as months of municipal inaction, tried to clear the blocked manhole themselves. According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), the men were overpowered by methane gas while working in the manhole. The deceased have not yet been publicly identified. Police confirmed that the men were employed by a local businessman and were not contracted by the City of Matlosana Municipality to perform any municipal maintenance work. An inquest docket has been opened and investigations into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy are underway. Municipality Expresses Condolences In an official statement issued on Tuesday afternoon, the City of Matlosana Local Municipality expressed its “deepest sympathy and heartfelt condolences”  to the families and loved ones of the two men. Executive Mayor Councillor Fikile Mahlophe said the municipality was “deeply saddened by this tragic event”  and extended sympathies to the affected families, adding: “Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult time.” Image: Songloed Buurtwag Municipal spokesperson Ms. Ntswaki Makgetha confirmed that the deceased were not municipal employees and urged members of the public and the media to “exercise sensitivity and refrain from speculation, allowing due process to unfold and respecting the privacy of the grieving families.” Residents Point to Longstanding Neglect Local residents say the tragedy could have been prevented had the municipality responded to repeated reports of the overflowing sewer, which had been causing health hazards and unbearable living conditions in the area for months. One resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “We called, emailed, and even went to the municipal offices to complain. The smell was terrible, and sewage was running down the street. Nothing was ever done. They left us to live like this.” Political Outrage Over ‘Preventable Tragedy’ The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Matlosana has blamed the incident on what it calls “chronic municipal neglect and the collapse of basic service delivery under the current ANC administration.” In a statement, the DA said: “This devastating incident occurred when residents, out of sheer desperation, attempted to unblock a sewer that had been overflowing for months. Despite numerous complaints and pleas for intervention, the municipality failed to act. It has since called for a full and transparent investigation into the incident to ensure accountability for those whose inaction contributed to the loss of life. The DA further stated that the tragedy highlights the urgent need for “competent leadership, proper maintenance of infrastructure, and governance that protects residents’ lives and dignity.” Investigation Continues Authorities remained on scene for much of the day as forensic teams conducted assessments. The area around the manhole was cordoned off, and several community members gathered nearby, visibly shaken by the loss. Police have not yet released the names of the deceased, pending notification of their families. The third man remains in hospital under observation. The municipality has urged the public to allow investigations to proceed and said it would cooperate fully with authorities to determine the exact cause and contributing factors behind the incident. A Community in Mourning As Orkney mourns the lives lost, questions continue to mount over whether this tragedy could (and should) have been prevented. For many residents, the incident is not just a story of personal loss, but a painful symbol of the systemic failure of local service delivery. “They died trying to fix what the municipality should have fixed,” one resident said quietly, standing near the cordoned-off site. “That’s the saddest part.”

In South Africa, about 44 000 deaths were attributed to cancer in 2018, representing roughly 10% of all deaths nationally. Approximately 85 000 new cases are diagnosed annually. Among South African women, breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed type, followed by cervical cancer. Among men, prostate cancer is the most prevalent. Awareness campaigns are viewed as a crucial part of reducing cancer mortality by encouraging prevention, early diagnosis, and improved access to treatment. Prevention and Early Detection Medical experts estimate that 30–50% of cancer cases can be prevented through healthy lifestyle choices and avoiding known risk factors. Tobacco use remains the leading preventable cause of cancer deaths worldwide. Other contributing factors include alcohol consumption, obesity, poor diet, and physical inactivity. Certain infections also increase cancer risk. Educators from across the JB Marks Local Municipality will unite in celebration of World Teachers’ Day (WTD) at the Ikageng Stadium on Friday, 17 October 2025. The event, themed “Empowering Educators, Strengthening Resilience and Building Sustainability,” aims to recognize and honor the dedication of teachers who continue to shape the future through education. 🕖 Morning Session: Fitness and Fellowship The day kicks off early with arrival and registration at 07:00 AM, followed by a 5 km Fun Walk led by Mr. H. Mathekga from 07:00 to 08:30. The spirit of wellness continues with an aerobics session facilitated by instructors from Virgin Active and Planet Fitness between 08:30 and 09:30.Registration of educators will continue until 09:55 AM, ensuring all attendees are ready for the formal proceedings. 🎤 Session Two: Official Programme and Speeches The second session begins at 10:00 AM, with Mr. S. Phiriepa officially opening the event and extending a warm welcome to all participants. Ms. O. Ntsime will then take the podium to explain the Purpose of the Day, followed by Mr. M. Makanake, who will deliver key announcements as the Sports Convener. A proud moment will follow at 10:55 AM as attendees stand together for the National Anthem, reflecting unity and national pride. 🤝 Stakeholder Engagement and Networking From 11:00 AM to 16:30 PM, the celebration will transition into an interaction session with key stakeholders.
