Touching the Edge of the Abyss – One Lied at a Time Classical music fans who enjoy their lieder with a side of drama, poetry and existential dread will want to pencil in the 29th of July. NG Kerk Vyfhoek in Baillie Park, Potchefstroom, will play host to Hugo Wolf – Mörike Art Songs: Touching the Edge of the Abyss, a programme promising less fluff and more depth. This isn’t your run-of-the-mill concert. Expect art songs that bite back. The Setup The evening’s programme revolves around the poetry of Eduard Mörike, set to music by the ever-intense Hugo Wolf. These aren’t just pretty songs about flowers and birds, they’re dramatic, nuanced and, if the subtitle is anything to go by, hovering somewhere near the abyss. The songs are grouped thematically and framed by a narrative crafted as a fictional memoir between Wolf and Mörike. It’s part performance, part historical reimagining, an ambitious concept that brings biographical insight into the composers’ inner worlds. You might just leave knowing more about their neuroses than your own. The Performers Baritone Dolf Mathee takes centre stage, performing the pieces and pulling double duty as the author of the narrative text. He’ll be joined by pianist and life partner Jana Mathee, because nothing says couple goals like interpreting 19th-century art songs together on stage. Piet Koornhof will handle narration duties, guiding the audience through the twisted, lyrical labyrinth. Between 12 and 22 July 2025, Potchefstroom and its surrounding areas experienced a series of traffic incidents, fire outbreaks, protest disruptions, and law enforcement operations. The following report presents verified updates received from Potchefstroom First Responders and affiliated security and emergency services. The report covers critical incidents, road disruptions, fire risk alerts, and public safety measures in a neutral and fact-based format. One lane of the N12 was obstructed due to the incident. Emergency services responded to the scene, and motorists were urged to proceed with caution. 14 July: Protest Action, Traffic Risks, and Security Response Protest Disruption: The Rysmierbult road was blocked with rocks due to protest action. SAPS was activated and responded to the area. Commuters were advised to avoid the route. Bicycle Accident: A bicycle accident occurred at the intersection of Peter Mokaba and Maree Streets. First responders and authorities were present at the scene. Traffic Light Malfunction: The traffic lights at Retief and Walter Sisulu Streets (near Rio Café) were reported out of order. This posed a potential traffic hazard, and authorities were notified. CBS Security Incident: In the evening, CBS Security's armed response team apprehended a suspect attempting to steal gas bottles after breaching an electric fence. The suspect was detained and later arrested. Volunteers were called to assist with traffic direction. Road use was discouraged during the repair window from 09:00 to 11:00 on 17 July. Protest Action Resumed: Rysmierbult road was again affected by protest activity. SAPS and the Provincial Traffic Police responded. Fire Danger Index (FDI): On 17 July, the fire risk level rose from moderate to high (FDI orange). A total fire ban was issued for the area, with “geen voorbrande” (no firebreaks) enforced. The 2025 National Pool Championships burst into action today at Madiba Hall, bringing together the country’s top cue sport talent in a spectacular showcase of skill, passion, and national pride. Organized under the banner of Pool South Africa, the opening day featured high-stakes matches and enthusiastic participation from players and fans alike. Strong Start with the Opens Tournament Today's spotlight was on the Opens Tournament, with a total of 35 teams competing, 16 in the A Division and 19 in the B Division. The atmosphere was electric as players began their quest for national glory under International Eightball rules. Later tonight, the action will continue with the Pairs Tournament, and excitement is already building for the Singles Championship, which kicks off tomorrow. 297 Players, 20 Regions, One Goal A staggering 297 participants from 20 different regions across South Africa made their way to the North West for this premier event. Representing all age groups and categories, from Under-14 to Wheelchair divisions, the championships reflect the inclusive spirit of the sport. Notably, over 40 Protea players, national athletes who have previously represented South Africa on the world stage, are taking part, ensuring world-class competition on every table. Why JB Marks? After careful consideration by the Pool South Africa Council, JB Marks was selected over bids from Emperors Palace (Gauteng) and Boardwalk (Eastern Cape). The council recognized the North West’s readiness and community backing, choosing Madiba Hall as the ideal venue to launch this year’s prestigious tournament. Match of the Day: A1 Clash Down to the Wire The most thrilling encounter of the day saw Western Province A1 go head-to-head with Northeast A1 in a gripping battle that had everyone on the edge of their seats. Growing the Game: Youth and Development Pool South Africa is actively nurturing the next generation of champions.
