The National Consumer Commission (NCC) issued an urgent alert on 21 November 2025, notifying pet owners across South Africa of the recall of several dry dog and cat food products manufactured by RCL Foods. The recall affects more than 55,352 bags  of well-known pet food brands produced between 26–29 May , 4–5 June , and 17 June 2025 . Laboratory testing identified elevated levels of Deoxynivalenol (DON) , a naturally occurring mycotoxin in maize, in certain batches used during the production process. DON levels in affected products exceeded the acceptable threshold of 1,000 ppb (1 ppm) , posing potential health risks to pets, including loss of appetite and digestive discomfort. A continued partnership between the Cachet Park City Improvement District (CID) and its waste-management service provider, Deswalner Recycling, is yielding significant results for the Bult area in Potchefstroom. On average, the team removes around 200 tonnes of waste per month , with roughly 140 tonnes diverted away from municipal landfills through recycling and recovery efforts.  This initiative has become a vital component of keeping the busy student district clean, safe, and sustainable. According to Werner van der Merwe, the company’s representative, the partnership was initially motivated through community leadership at North-West University, particularly the late Professor Fika Janse van Rensburg of the Faculty of Theology. Van der Merwe explains that the early operation was modest, processing only 2 to 3 tonnes  of recyclable waste per month. With community support and increased capacity, the organisation expanded its infrastructure by adding a larger facility in 2021. This growth enabled them to handle significantly higher volumes of waste, ultimately reaching the current average of 200 tonnes monthly . Deswalner Recycling’s reach extends beyond Potchefstroom, with similar projects operating in Orlando East, Mooifontein, Kya Sands, and parts of Klerksdorp. Still, the Bult remains one of their most impactful sites, given its mix of student life, businesses, and residential activity. Daily Waste Removal and Recycling Process The waste-collection process is carefully structured. Workers load refuse from CID bins into trolleys, transporting 10 to 12 full loads daily  to a central weighing station. Materials suitable for recycling are sorted and processed, reducing the pressure on municipal landfill sites. Items that cannot be recovered are transported responsibly to the nearest waste-disposal facility. Die werkwoord inspireer word gedefinieer as “om iemand op ‘n positiewe manier te beïnvloed.” As selfstandige naamwoord beteken inspirasie “dit wat begeester”, en wat ‘n treffende, gepaste woord is dit nie om Santi Britz, wat onlangs as Voelgoed Media se Inspirasievrou van die Jaar gekroon is, te beskryf nie.  Santi, ‘n trotse inwoner van Potchefstroom, is op 8 November as Suid-Afrika se Inspirasievrou van 2025 bekroon tydens Voelgoed Media se Inspirasievrou Toekenningsoggend by Monte de Dios Boutique Hotel in Pretoria. Santi was een van tien finaliste en het op die ou end van die dag weggestap met die gesogte titel.  “Ek was regtig oorweldig, dit was vir my ‘n groot eer om genomineer te word”, het sy genoem tydens haar onderhoud met Voelgoed se program, Goeiemôre. Sy noem ook dat ‘n mens nooit dink jou lewensreis ‘n verskil in iemand anders se lewe gaan maak nie, maar talle persone het op sosiale media hul waardering en respek vir Santi uitgedruk - 'n duidelike aanduiding dat haar verhaal báie mense geraak het. Inspirasievrou fokus op vroue wat omgee, bemagtig en bemoedig. Dit is nie altyd die uiterlike waarna daar gekyk moet word nie, maar eerder na binne.  “Ons lewe in ‘n wêreld van pretensie wat ontsettend [ingestel] is op die uiterlike…en ons moet begin onderskei. Kyk weg van die uiterlike en kyk na die hart. Dis die klein dingetjies wat maak dat ons ‘n verskil kan maak.” Vir dié wie nie haar roerende storie ken nie, het sy dit in ‘n neutedop probeer vasvang. In 2009 is sy in haar huis verkrag deur ‘n rondloper man. Dit is ook tydens hierdie voorval waar haar man in die hospitaal was, so dit was ‘n vreeslike moeilike tyd in hul lewe. Sy noem dat verkragting ‘n kragtige instrument van mag is, juis omdat dit nie slegs die slagoffer beïnvloed nie, maar ‘n hele familie. Die misdadiger is later gevang en lewenslank gevonnis, maar die emosionele trauma sou vir Santi nog lank gevange hou. Haar roeping en lewensreis het op ‘n ironiese manier begin. Sy het ‘n oproep vanaf die universiteit ontvang wat haar in kennis gestel het dat daar ‘n verkragting slagoffer is en gevra of sy nie bereid sal wees om te kom help nie. Sy het dadelik teen dié idee geskop met haar eie ervaring nog, ongelukkig, vars in haar geheue. Die Kolonel wat met haar gepraat het, het haar finaal oortuig toe dié vir haar sê “Santi, dit is chaos hier en jý weet hoe sy voel.” Sestien jaar sedert daardie oproep, help sy steeds slagoffers van geweld dwarsoor die land.  Santi is die stigter van iDUC, Initiative for Dedicated Upliftment and Care, 'n nie-winsgewende organisasie in Potchefstroom wat ondersteuning bied aan slagoffers van verkragting en mishandeling. Sy het iDUC gestig om bewusmaking te bevorder en slagoffers te ondersteun. Hulle bied berading, hulpbronne en opvoedkundige programme aan om geweld teen vroue en kinders te bekamp.  Sommige verwys na haar as die go-to persoon in Potchefstroom wanneer dit kom by geslagsgeweld. Met haar sagmoedige hart kan slagoffers makliker oopmaak teenoor Santi en werklik veilig voel. Die hele span by iDUC se doel is om slagoffers te bekragtig en bemoedig terwyl hul hul menswaardigheid terugkry en werklik leer om in oorwinning te leef.  Die inisiatief stop nie slegs by vroue nie. Ongelukkig word daar ‘n bordjie van jongs af om sommige mans se nekke gehang wat hul as geweldadig of ‘n mishandelaar klassifiseer. Dit is waar Santi en die iDUC span intree. Hulle gaan besoek mans in die korporatiewe wêreld en selfs by die myne om met hulle te gesels oor wat húlle kan doen om van daardie etiket ontslae te raak. Aan die einde van die dag wil Santi die volgende by elke slagoffer agterlaat: "Die persoon het nie jou toekoms gevat nie, daardie oomblik is verby en ons gaan ‘n pad met jou stap. Dit is ‘n moeilike pad, maar jy kan in oorwinning daaruit stap." Die potte prut tydens Homestead Butchery se 2025 Potjiekos Kompetisie Ter viering van hul vierde verjaarsdag het Homestead Butchery, nes verlede jaar, ‘n Potjiekos Kompetisie aangebied om die gemeenskap deel te maak van die feesviering!  Die dag het al skuins ná 07h00 begin en teen 15h30 was die stalletjies besig om stadigaan op te pak, met niemand wat gereed was om dié jolige dag te eindig nie. Die bekende, lekker, trots Suid-Afrikaanse reuk van vuur het die lug al vroeg-vroeg gevul en kort voor lank het die eerste reuke uit die potte begin trek. Met ‘n indrukwekkende aantal besighede wat ingeskryf het, was daar tog ‘n mate van erns tydens hierdie prettige dag.  Die seremoniemeester, Kees, het gesorg dat deelnemers sowel as klante die hele dag vermaak word. Lekker saamsing treffers het in die agtergrond gespeel, party spanne het die groen en goud met trots gedra en daar was ‘n algehele gevoel van samehorigheid…en gesonde kompetisie. PD Conradie en Divan Kotze het ook gesorg vir groot vermaak toe hulle in ‘n hoender en alien kostuum onderskeidelik hul verskyning maak en tussen die stalletjies begin deurloop. Hulle het later die dag vir Bokkie ontmoet en daar was selfs resies gehardloop.   Terug by die kompetisie. Nie net moes deelnemers se potjies die beoordelaars beïndruk nie, die bykosse, versierings van die stalletjie en kreet moes ook ‘n blywende indruk laat en het deel gemaak van die totale punte toekenning.  ChatGPT was baie spanne se beste maatjie, veral toe die beoordelaars ‘n kinkel in die kabel gooi en aankondig dat daar ‘n kreet of liedjie gesing moet word. Dit het gesorg vir baie lag tydens beoordeling.  Na ‘n hele dag se vuur stook, potte roer en “nog so bietjie”, was dit eindelik tyd vir die beoordelaars om die spanne te besoek en die kos te proe. Daar was jou tradisionele potte en dan was daar ‘n paar eksotiese disse. Op die ou end van die dag het Kooperasie Kroeg & Kos weggestap met die trofee in die Restaurant afdeling - vir die tweede jaar in ‘n ry! En dit was Flotek wat koning gekraai het in die Besigheid afdeling.  Baie, baie geluk aan dié twee spanne wat die ander gewys het waar Dawid die wortels (en aartappels en uie) begrawe het. Baie dankie vir nog ‘n wonderlike dag van pret, kameraadskap en feesviering, Homestead Butchery!
