  • Potch Lets Help: Local Mother Faces Critical Battle with Cancer, Lupus, and Heart Failure

A local resident known for her lifelong dedication to helping others is now on the receiving end of a massive outreach effort. Lori, a prominent figure in local youth mentorship, is facing a severe, multi-layered health crisis that has prompted her family to launch a public appeal for medical assistance. Image: Back-a-Buddy A Lifetime of Serving Others For years, Lori has been a cornerstone of her community, balancing commitments as a mother, teacher, and youth leader. Most notably, she has spent much of her life guiding young girls through the Girl Guides South Africa organization, instilling values of leadership, community service, and resilience in the next generation. Known by peers and family alike for her energetic and altruistic approach to life, Lori has historically been the person others turn to in times of need. However, a series of recent, debilitating medical diagnoses has drastically altered her circumstances, shifting her from the role of a caregiver to someone in profound need of specialized medical intervention. Overwhelming Medical Challenges According to details shared by her daughters, Nimré and Nevaeh, Lori’s health has taken a severe downturn due to the simultaneous convergence of several life-threatening and chronic conditions. Her current medical diagnoses include: Cancer: Requiring ongoing oncology monitoring and treatments. Lupus: A systemic autoimmune disease that causes the immune system to attack its own tissues and organs. Heart Failure: Mandating strict cardiovascular management and specialized care. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD): A progressive lung disease that severely restricts airflow and makes breathing increasingly difficult. The compounding nature of these illnesses has placed an immense emotional and financial strain on her family, as the specialized treatments, prescription drugs, and frequent consultations quickly exceed standard medical reserves. The Appeal for Essential Medical Aid In response to the mounting pressure, Lori's daughters have initiated a crowdfunding campaign via the South African platform BackaBuddy. The primary objective of the fundraising drive is to secure a portable oxygen machine, a critical piece of medical equipment that will grant Lori the mobility needed to maintain a quality of life despite her advanced COPD. In addition to the respiratory equipment, the funds are earmarked for several vital medical expenses: Facilitating travel and consultation fees for the specialized Lupus Clinic in Johannesburg. Settling ongoing, high-cost accounts at the local pharmacy for daily management medications. Covering regular, essential doctor and specialist visitation fees. How the Public Can Assist The campaign, titled Lori Needs You, is open to public contributions. The family has emphasized that apart from monetary donations, sharing the campaign link and sending messages of emotional support are equally vital to sustaining their mother's spirits during this protracted battle. As regional and wider networks begin to respond, the initiative serves as a stark reminder of the financial vulnerabilities associated with chronic healthcare crises, and the power of collective action in supporting individuals who have dedicated their lives to the service of others. • Tristan Leyds Nominated for Prestigous World Rugby SVNS Player of the Year Award

The sensational form of the Springbok Sevens team throughout the 2026 circuit has received the ultimate individual validation. South African playmaker Tristan Leyds has been officially named as one of the three nominees for the prestigious Men's SVNS Player of the Year award. The shortlists, released by World Rugby on Monday, arrive amid immense anticipation just days before the season-ending HSBC SVNS World Championship Final gets underway in Bordeaux, France. The annual awards ceremony celebrates outstanding individual performances across the global calendar, recognizing on-field excellence, tactical brilliance, and sportsmanship following an unforgettable year of international rugby sevens. Image: Blitzboks The Pinnacle Category: Leyds Versus the World's Best Leyds’ nomination comes as no surprise to those who have followed the Blitzboks’ dominant run this season, which included four consecutive tournament victories in Perth, Vancouver, New York, and Hong Kong, followed by a silver-medal finish in Valladolid. Operating as the primary tactical orchestrator, his pin-point kicking game, defensive work-rate, and clinical distribution have been the bedrock of South Africa's surge to the top of the World Championship standings. The South African star faces incredibly stiff competition in the flagship men's category. He is joined on the shortlist by Australia’s veteran playmaker Henry Hutchison, who recently spearheaded the Wallabies' cup final victory in Spain, and Fiji’s lethal attacking weapon Vuiviwa Naduvalo. Global Elite: A Showcase of Rugby Sevens Talent The shortlists across the remaining major categories highlight the global depth and competitive balance currently defining the international game. Three players have been selected for each category, with the final winners set to be revealed during the tournament finale in Bordeaux. In the Women's SVNS Player of the Year category, Australia’s prolific try-scoring machine Maddison Levi leads the nominations after her recent hat-trick exploits in Spain. She is joined by New Zealand’s dynamic playmaker Jorja Miller and United States standout Ariana Ramsey, whose explosive pace helped the USA push the world's best throughout the season. The talent pipeline is also celebrated through the Rookie of the Year awards, which honor breakthrough stars who have made an immediate impact on the international stage. Women's SVNS Rookie of the Year Nominees: Anaick Konyi (France), Kennedi Stevenson (Canada), and Tahna Wilfley (USA). Men's SVNS Rookie of the Year Nominees: Kele Lasaqa (New Zealand), Harry Wilson (Australia), and Finley Lloyd-Gilmour (Great Britain). Special Honors and the Dream Teams Beyond the four major voted categories, the Bordeaux finale will witness the presentation of several special statistical honors. These include the Men's and Women's SVNS Top Try Scorer awards. Additionally, the highly anticipated Men's and Women's SVNS Dream Teams of the Year will be unveiled. This selection acknowledges the seven players in each division who have delivered world-class performances with unmatched consistency over the multi-city global circuit. World Rugby CEO Alan Gilpin praised the caliber of this year's nominees, stating: "The HSBC SVNS Awards recognise the exceptional talent, commitment and performances that have defined another outstanding year of rugby sevens around the world. From season-long stand out performers to exciting new players making their mark on the international stage, these nominees represent the very best of our sport." The Perfect Finale in Bordeaux The awards will provide the perfect concluding chapter to an action-packed competitive year. For Leyds and the Blitzboks, the focus remains firmly on team glory as they look to secure the overall World Championship title in France. However, the potential of bringing an individual player of the year trophy back to South Africa adds a golden incentive to what promises to be an explosive weekend of rugby. #SVNSAwards #TristanLeyds #Blitzboks #Bordeaux7s 🇿🇦🏆🏉✨

  • Halved Tax Relief Drives June Petrol Hike While Diesel Plummets

The Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources (DMPR) has announced the official fuel price structural adjustments taking effect on Wednesday, 3 June 2026. The narrative for June is entirely defined by a tug-of-war between strong international over-recoveries and the National Treasury’s planned withdrawal of emergency tax relief. While global market factors dramatically favored a price drop across the board, petrol users are still facing a hike solely because the government is phasing out its temporary tax subsidy. Image: The Go-To Guy Creations The June 2026 Price Structure (Inland Zone 9C) For motorists across Gauteng and the North West, the official retail pump prices for petrol and wholesale prices for diesel will adjust as follows: Fuel Type Price Adjustment New June Price (Inland) May Reference Price Petrol 95 Unleaded Increase of R1.43 per litre R28.06 R26.63 Petrol 93 Unleaded Increase of R1.43 per litre R27.95 R26.52 Diesel 0.05% (Wholesale) Decrease of R3.25 per litre R27.92 R31.17 Diesel 0.005% (Wholesale) Decrease of R2.62 per litre R29.26 R31.88 Illuminating Paraffin Decrease of R5.96 per litre R22.47 R28.43 LPGas Decrease of 17 cents per kg R40.95 R41.12 Why Petrol is Up Despite Market Drops During May, a stabilizing Brent Crude oil price (averaging $104.59 per barrel) and a stronger Rand (rebounding from R16.65 to R16.52 per USD) combined with shifting seasonal demand in the Northern Hemisphere to create an excellent market cushion. Normally, these factors would have triggered a welcome price cut for all vehicle owners. However, the National Treasury has officially begun the planned phasing out of the temporary general fuel levy relief that was introduced during the peak of the Middle East shipping crisis. For Petrol, R1.50 per litre was reintroduced to the tax structure this month as part of this scheduled reduction in relief. This structural change absorbed the basic product over-recovery, turning a potential price drop into a net R1.43 per litre hike. For Diesel, the Treasury reinstated R1.96 per litre of the levy. Fortunately, the massive international drop in middle-distillate product values (saving a substantial R5.42 per litre on the basic fuel price) was large enough to offset the return of the tax, securing a major net decrease of up to R3.25 per litre for diesel consumers. The Slate Levy Factor Further compounding the baseline costs is South Africa's Self-Adjusting Slate Levy Mechanism. Due to cumulative under-recoveries by oil importers reaching a negative balance of R18.28 billion at the end of April, the Slate Levy has been hiked by 35.04 cents per litre, moving from 122.70 c/l up to 157.74 c/l for both petrol and diesel. What This Means for the Road Ahead Motorists should treat the massive drop in diesel prices as a temporary window of relief. The remaining portions of the government's temporary tax relief, amounting to R1.50 per litre for petrol and R1.97 per litre for diesel, are legally structured to disappear completely on 1 July 2026. Unless global product prices collapse drastically over the next few weeks, another automatic baseline hike is already guaranteed for mid-winter. Disclaimer: Please note that these official figures are for reference only, as retail pump prices will vary across individual service stations. #FuelPriceUpdate #Gauteng #NorthWest ⛽📈🚗📉

  • Junior Boks Clinch Series Style with Dominant Victory Over Georgia

The Junior Springboks concluded the inaugural U20 International Series with a flawless record, dispatching a physical Georgia side 57-14 in front of a packed crowd at Paul Roos Gymnasium's Markötter Stadium in Stellenbosch. Having already registered heavy victories over Chile and Fiji earlier in the tournament, the South African Under-20s completed a clean sweep of three wins from three matches to finish the series in style. Georgia entered the final round full of confidence after impressive wins against Fiji and Chile, but they ultimately had no answer for the host nation's ruthless combination of forward dominance and backline flair. A powerhouse performance at scrum time laid a rock-solid platform for the Junior Bok backline, capitalising heavily on Georgian disciplinary lapses to dominate both territory and possession from the outset. Enterprising First-Half Onslaught The Junior Boks wasted no time asserting themselves on a sunny afternoon, running in six spectacular tries before the break. Yaqeen Ahmed opened the scoring with a brilliant display of footwork from an attacking lineout. While Georgia briefly leveled the score at 7-7 through a converted maul try by Levani Ezieshvili, it proved to be a rare moment of celebration for the visitors. South Africa quickly went through the gears, delivering a masterclass in set-piece execution and expansive rugby. Hooker Kebotile Maake crossed the whitewash twice from well-orchestrated lineout moves close to the line, while the lethal Luan Giliomee continued his rich vein of form by bagging a first-half brace. Flyhalf Vusi Moyo also joined the scoring spree, dotting down after a slick backline move and converting four tries to push the halftime score to a commanding 38-7. Sealing the Clean Sweep The European outfit started the second stanza with renewed vigor, applying sustained pressure on the South African defense and testing their resolve at the scrum. Their efforts were rewarded when Luka Tabatadze crashed over for a converted try, pushing the visitors into double figures. However, the Junior Boks quickly extinguished any thoughts of a comeback. Ahmed soon drifted down the blindside to secure his second try of the match following another powerful lineout drive. Local favorite Gert Kemp, playing on his former high school ground, then brought the crowd to their feet by finishing off a sensational counter-attacking try originating deep within the South African half. Wing Jack Benade completed the nine-try rout, capitalizing on slick handling to score in the right corner. Ahmed converted both late scores to seal the emphatic 57-14 scoreline, with the Junior Boks' defense standing firm in the final minutes to deny Georgia a consolation score. Final Whistle Three matches, three commanding victories, and an unbeaten crown safely secured. The Junior Springboks have wrapped up the inaugural U20 International Series in the best possible fashion, blending brutal forward power with clinical finishing out wide. With over 230 points scored across their three outings against Chile, Fiji, and Georgia, Kevin Foote’s charges have laid down a massive marker and built crucial winning momentum as they enter the final stretch of preparation for the upcoming Junior World Championship. • Brave Blitzboks Fall to Australia in Thrilling Spanish Final

The Springbok Sevens team experienced the full spectrum of tournament rugby at the HSBC SVNS Valladolid in Spain. Chasing an unprecedented sixth consecutive tournament crown on the global circuit, the South Africans fought through uncharacteristic lapses, defensive shifts, and heart-stopping knockout victories to reach the cup final at the Estadio Jose Zorrilla. While a clinical Australian outfit ultimately ended their winning streak with a 26–19 victory in the final, the Blitzboks achieved their primary strategic objective. By securing the silver medal in Spain, South Africa leaves Valladolid with 38 log points, maintaining a critical four-point lead over Argentina (34) and Australia (30) at the summit of the World Championship standings. Day One: Resolute Defense Outweighs Early Frustrations The Blitzboks opened their Pool A campaign on Friday by securing consecutive victories over Great Britain and Kenya, anchoring themselves at the top of the standings despite battling visible rust. Their opening fixture against Great Britain proved to be a test of patience. Sloppy breakdown work and an unusually high volume of missed first-time tackles allowed the British side to dictate territorial dominance early on. Charlton Kerr opened the scoring for Great Britain, exposing a gap with a clever dummy to lead. Just before the halftime siren, a flash of individual brilliance from Tristan Leyds released Shilton van Wyk, who ghosted through the defense to level the score at 5–5. The bench injected immediate urgency in the second half. Dewald Human delivered a perfectly weighted grubber kick for Sebastiaan Jobb to chase down and score, with Human adding the extras. However, a cruel, wicked bounce from a late British kick eluded sweeper Ricardo Duarttee, allowing Great Britain to score under the posts and force sudden-death extra time. In the nervous extra period, relentless defensive pressure from Jayden Nell and Quewin Nortje forced a crucial penalty. From the ensuing scrum, Leyds executed a sweeping backline loop to cross the line and lock in a grueling 17–12 victory. The subsequent African derby against Kenya was a much more structured affair. Operating with an aggressive, in-your-face defensive press, the Blitzboks forced Kenya into deep territory. Van Wyk pounced on a rushed Kenyan pass, intercepting it to score under the uprights for an early 7–0 advantage. The second half stayed frantic as Kenya searched for a weakness, but South Africa remained composed. When a Kenyan defender was sent to the sin bin for a deliberate knock-on, the Blitzboks capitalized immediately. From a penalty scrum, Human delivered a pin-point cross-field kick to Jobb, who dot-down smoothly in the corner. A late try-saving intervention by Nell preserved the clean sheet, securing a clinical 14–0 win. Day Two: Pool Decider Setback and a Spanish Great Escape Saturday tested the depth and mental fortitude of the South Africans as they navigated a bruising pool decider against Australia before meeting a vocal host nation in the quarterfinals. The final pool match saw Australia replicate their previous New York victory over the Blitzboks, utilizing an explosive final two minutes to run away with a 24–14 win. South Africa suffered an early blow when playmaker Dewald Human went off with a leg injury after three minutes. Quewin Nortje briefly settled nerves by scoring a converted try, but a dropped ball on attack allowed Australia to execute a lethal counter-attack score on the stroke of halftime, taking a 10–7 lead. The Blitzboks fought back early in the second half through Gino Cupido, who ran a sharp angled line to push South Africa ahead 14–10. However, execution errors proved costly. A dropped pass with the line gaping was followed by a catastrophic miscommunication between Cupido and Leyds on a kickoff restart. The ball bounced awkwardly between the stationary defenders into the arms of an grateful Australian chaser, sparking a late two-try surge that snatched the match for Australia. The quarterfinal against tournament hosts Spain will go down as one of the gutsiest escapes in Blitzbok history. Played in front of a raucous, passionate home crowd, Spain completely dominated possession and territory in the first half, stringing together 47 passes to South Africa’s 15 to build a shocking 12–0 halftime lead. The turnaround began four minutes from time when Impi Visser finished a counter-attack sparked by Leyds. Spain threatened to seal the match moments later with an interception, but a miraculous cover tackle from Sebastiaan Jobb forced a knock-on directly under the crossbar. Handed a lifeline, the Blitzboks made it count. Off a late scrum, Selvyn Davids exploited the blindside, stringing together a sequence of quick passes and a kick that allowed debutant Jayden Nell to score the equalizer. Duarttee calmly slotted the high-pressure conversion to steal a 14–12 victory from the jaws of defeat. Day Three: Semi-Final Masterclass and Ultimate Final Heartbreak On Sunday, the Blitzboks returned to the clinical form that has defined their season, outclassing fierce rivals Argentina 19–7 in a highly physical semifinal. Jobb got South Africa on the scoreboard early, showcasing incredible strength to crash over in the corner with two Argentinian defenders hanging onto his back. Argentina hit back before the interval with a converted try to hold a narrow 7–5 lead, utilizing a desperate cover tackle to deny Davids on the line. The second half turned entirely on tactical interventions from the South African bench. Ryan Oosthuizen executed a brilliant lineout steal deep in Argentinian territory, setting the platform for Duarttee to slice through a retreating defensive line for a stunning solo try. Oosthuizen then turned scorer, crossing out wide as the Blitzboks put their foot on the gas to register their sixth consecutive victory over Los Pumas. The cup final set up a highly anticipated rematch against Australia. Seeking immediate redemption for their Saturday pool loss, the Blitzboks started like a house on fire. A perfectly executed set-piece play from a scrum saw Davids break wide before slipping an inside pass to an angled Van Wyk, who ran in untouched. Moments later, Oosthuizen turned provider with a powerful line-break, feeding Jobb to extend the lead to a commanding 14–0. However, Australia’s continuous lateral shifting began to stretch the South African defensive line, exposing a lack of lateral cover that led to 12 missed tackles throughout the match. James Turner struck back for Australia before the break, and a missed tackle right on the buzzer allowed the Wallaby Sevens to square the game at 14–14. The momentum turned permanently early in the second half when Leyds was sent to the sin bin for cynical play. Operating with a numerical advantage, Australia expertly manipulated the numbers out wide, scoring two quick tries against a tiring six-man South African line to race to a 26–14 lead. The Blitzboks mounted a furious late rally. Following a red card to Australia's Turner for a dangerous tackle, Cupido crossed in the corner with 90 seconds remaining to narrow the deficit to seven points. With the match clock firmly in the red, the Blitzboks launched one final, multi-phase assault from their own half, eventually crossing the line for what appeared to be the equalizing try. However, a tense Television Match Official (TMO) review broke South African hearts, ruling that an intermediate pass from Cupido had traveled forward, ending the match at 26–19. Final whistle Despite the agonizing nature of the final defeat, the Blitzboks remain the team to beat on the global circuit. Their consistency across three demanding days in Valladolid ensures they maintain absolute control of their destiny heading into the final leg of the season. The world's top teams now head directly to Bordeaux, France (5–7 June) for the season-ending HSBC SVNS World Championship tournament, where Philip Snyman’s men will look to officially secure the global crown. • Groundbreaking NurseLead Programme Launched at NWU During Nurses Month – May 2026

The past month has marked a historic turning point for South African healthcare with the official launch of the NurseLead programme, a collaborative venture between North-West University (NWU) and the National Department of Health. Unveiled during National Nurses Month in May 2026 and leading up to International Nurses Day on May 12, this first-of-its-kind national initiative is designed to empower both current and emerging nurse leaders across the country. By bridging the gap between rigorous academic theory and the daily frontline pressures of clinical practice, the programme aims to permanently transform the landscape of nursing education and healthcare leadership. Image: The Go-To Guy Creations A Visionary Collaboration for Healthcare Excellence The NurseLead programme is spearheaded by Professor Siedine Coetzee, the NWU National Research Foundation (NRF) Albertina Sisulu Research Chair in Nursing Science (SARChI), alongside Dr Mirriam Matandela, South Africa’s Chief Nursing and Midwifery Officer within the National Department of Health. The partnership developed out of active engagement between the National Department of Health and Prof. Coetzee, culminating in a shared vision to build responsible, accountable, and responsive nurse leaders equipped with high levels of emotional intelligence and ethical decision-making skills. A dynamic two-day collaboration workshop held on May 5 and 6, 2026, served as the launchpad for the programme's curriculum development. The event brought together a powerful synergy of top nursing science researchers and influential practice leaders, including representatives from: The South African Nursing Council (SANC) The National Department of Health Provincial Directors of Nursing Services Hospital Nursing Directors and Managers from various healthcare facilities nationwide Reflecting on the milestone, Prof. Coetzee stated, “This is a dream come true. I first envisioned a national nurse leadership academy when I applied for my NRF SARChI Chair, but this collaboration has far surpassed anything I imagined. The passion, expertise, and commitment around the table have been extraordinary.” Image: NWU Curriculum Design and Clinical Governance The NurseLead curriculum is anchored directly in the National Department of Health’s South African Nursing Leadership Competency Framework, which was released in July 2025. It is specifically engineered to help medical practitioners on the frontline navigate complex real-world challenges, such as resource limitations and high-pressure hospital environments. The programme places a heavy emphasis on clinical governance and leadership, which the World Health Organization (WHO) identifies as critical components for achieving Universal Health Coverage. The initiative aligns closely with the 2026 International Nurses Day global theme: “Our Nurses, Our Future: Empowered Nurses save lives.” The national education curriculum is slated for completion by the end of 2026, after which it will be piloted across selected hospital sites throughout South Africa. Strengthening Local Partnerships: NWU and Potchefstroom Hospital In tandem with the national launch of NurseLead, local celebrations for International Nurses Day on May 12 highlighted the vital operational partnerships driving nursing excellence on the ground. The NWU School of Nursing, led by Deputy Director Prof. Khumo Shopo, joined forces with the executive management of Potchefstroom Hospital to honour healthcare workers. The event featured addresses from Potchefstroom Hospital’s leadership, including Acting CEO Dr Michael Shakung and Acting Nursing Service Manager Sr Henda Aslett. Both extended deep appreciation for the dedication of the frontline staff, with Dr Shakung noting, “There is no hospital without nurses.” Key Attendees & Leadership Institution / Role Prof. Siedine Coetzee NWU NRF Albertina Sisulu Research Chair in Nursing Science Dr Mirriam Matandela Chief Nursing & Midwifery Officer, National Dept of Health Prof. Khumo Shopo Deputy Director, NWU School of Nursing Dr Michael Shakung Acting CEO, Potchefstroom Hospital Evelyn Nkhumane Director for Nursing Education and Training Speakers at the event echoed the International Council of Nurses (ICN) directive that true empowerment requires eliminating structural barriers and providing sufficient resources and functional equipment. By equipping current and future nursing figures with the tools to lead high-performing teams, North-West University and the National Department of Health are working to ensure that the nation's healthcare system remains resilient, ethical, and fully prepared to meet future demands. #HealthcareLeadership #NurseLead #NWUNursing #NursesMonth2026 🏥👩‍⚕️👨‍⚕️

  • Grit and Growth: Springbok Women’s Sevens Show Fierce Defiance in Valladolid

The Springbok Women’s Sevens team arrived at the second leg of the HSBC SVNS World Championship in Valladolid, Spain, carrying the heavy burden of survival. Facing the realistic prospect of dropping out of the core circuit for the 2027 season, Coach Cecil Afrika’s side required a massive turnaround in performance following a difficult outing in Hong Kong a month prior. What transpired over three grueling days of competition was a testament to South African grit. While the ultimate goal of automatic qualification via a top-eight finish now hangs by the thinnest of threads, the tournament showcased a rapidly evolving team. Through structural discipline, ferocious defense, and clinical attacking sparks, the South Africans finished their Spanish campaign on a high, securing back-to-back victories against South American heavyweights to claim ninth place overall. Friday Defiance: Pushing the Powerhouses to the Limit The opening day of pool play saw South Africa drawn against two of the most formidable forces on the global circuit: Australia and the United States. While both matches ultimately ended in 26–12 defeats, the scorelines hid a narrative of massive structural improvement and second-half dominance. Against Australia, the Springbok Women were struck by a first-half whirlwind. Australian try-scoring machine Maddison Levi proved unstoppable, crossing for a clinical hat-trick to steer her side into a commanding 26–7 lead at the interval. South Africa’s solitary first-half response was a spectacular one; speedster Maria Tshiremba capitalized on soft hands from Vianca Boer and a gap forced by Ayanda Malinga to race 70 meters downfield, with Byrhandré Dolf adding the conversion. The second half, however, belonged entirely to South Africa. Implementing a bruising defensive press, the Bok Women completely shut down the Australian attack, forcing numerous handling errors. Eloise Webb provided the highlight of the session, dancing down the touchline and beating two defenders with her trademark goose-step to score the only points of the half. That defensive momentum carried into their evening clash with the USA. Despite falling behind 14–0 early due to an unlucky interception try by Kaylen Thomas and a quick turnover score, South Africa refused to yield. Malinga struck back just before halftime, running a tight line from a scrum to burst through the defensive line for a 50-meter solo try, leaving the score at 14–7. Immediately after the restart, Dolf linked up with Boer from a scrum, powering down the touchline to score in the corner. Though the conversion went wide, the Bok Women had narrowed the gap to two points. Late fatigue ultimately took its toll, as Thomas and Ariana Ramsey scored long-range tries to seal the win for the Americans, but the performance proved that South Africa could go toe-to-toe with the world's best. Agony Against Fiji and the Saturday Turning Point Saturday morning brought a high-stakes final pool match against Fiji, where a victory was non-negotiable to maintain hopes for a top-eight tournament placement. Bolstered by the return of Lerato Makua from suspension, Coach Afrika started both Webb and Dolf to maximize playmaking options. South Africa started with immense intensity. After sustained pressure, Fiji fluffed a clearance inside their own in-goal area, allowing Dolf to pounce for an early 5–0 lead. However, Fiji's expansive game eventually stretched the tiring South African defense, allowing the islanders to score two quick tries before the break to lead 12–5. When Fijian veteran Reapi Ulunisau scored her landmark 100th SVNS Series try early in the second half to make it 17–5, the game seemed lost. Yet again, the South Africans fought back. Tshiremba showcased her blistering pace to score out wide, with Dolf’s conversion pulling the score to 17–12. Despite Tshiremba being yellow-carded shortly after for a high tackle, a final South African attack loomed in the dying seconds. Tragically, a stray final pass from Malinga sailed into touch, sealing an agonizing defeat and virtually extinguishing the team's top-eight aspirations. Bouncing Back: Knockout Triumphs Over Argentina and Brazil Demoralized but not defeated, the Springbok Women had to quickly refocus for the ninth-place bracket, beginning with a semifinal clash against an Argentinian side that had won all four of their previous encounters. Argentina opened the scoring, but the Dolf/Webb combination quickly took control of the match. Webb straightened the attacking line brilliantly to unleash Malinga on a 60-meter sprint to the line. Minutes later, the roles reversed as Webb chased down a perfectly weighted Dolf grubber kick to score under the uprights, putting South Africa up 12–5. After Argentina narrowed the gap to two points following a fluffed restart, captain Zintle Mpupha stepped up, breaking the line after a deft pass from Dolf to secure a 19–17 victory and a place in the ninth-place final. Sunday's positional final against Brazil followed a similar trajectory of resilience. Brazil struck first, taking a 7–0 lead following a handling error that also saw playmaker Dolf leave the field with an unfortunate injury. Rather than deflating the squad, the setback ignited the South African defensive line. The continuous pressure forced Brazil deep into their own territory. On the stroke of halftime, Malinga was worked into the corner for a well-deserved try to bring the score to 7–5. The second half was a showcase of tactical maturity. Macaela Samboya celebrated her first try at the international sevens level, running onto a delightful, measured kick from Webb to score under the posts. With the lead secured at 12–7, Mpupha sealed the result with a brilliant individual burst through the heart of the Brazilian defense. Despite a late yellow card for Tshiremba and a consolation try for Brazil after the hooter, the 19–12 victory was secured. Final Whistle By concluding the Valladolid tournament with consecutive victories, the Springbok Women’s Sevens team has moved past Argentina and Great Britain into 10th position on the overall standings. The performance in Spain proved that under Cecil Afrika, the team has acquired the tactical variance and defensive fortitude needed to challenge the core circuit. The focus now shifts immediately to the final leg of the HSBC SVNS World Championship in Bordeaux, France next weekend. While automatic safety in the top eight requires a mathematical miracle, the trajectory of this team suggests they will arrive in France ready to fight until the final whistle.

Beeld: Webblad Momentum Aardklop Wie is Buks? Buks is nie sommer enige hond nie.
