- Residents Urged to Submit Own Meter Readings as Matlosana Contract Ends
Residents across Klerksdorp and surrounding towns will soon be required to take charge of their own water and electricity meter readings , following the expiry of a key municipal service contract. The change, which takes effect from 1 November , comes after the City of Matlosana’s agreement with Mosekate Trading and Projects Company concluded at the end of September. Image: The Go-To Guy Creations ⚙️ Background: End of a Service Contract The contract between Matlosana Municipality and Mosekate Trading and Projects Company began in 2021, assigning the company responsibility for reading meters across areas including Klerksdorp, Jouberton, Kanana, Orkney, and Stilfontein . Municipal officials confirmed that the contract officially expired on 30 September 2025 , and while a new service provider has not yet been appointed, all September readings , which form the basis of October billing , have already been captured. This means residents’ current accounts remain unaffected. However, from November onwards , residents will need to submit their own meter readings directly to the municipality to ensure accurate billing. The change forms part of an interim arrangement until new systems or contracts are finalised. 📷 How the New Process Works Residents have been asked to follow a self-reporting process to keep their accounts up to date. 1️⃣ Take a clear photo of your meter between the 1st and 10th of each month . The image must display both the meter reading and a visible timestamp (date and time). A free timestamp app can be downloaded from the Play Store to assist with this requirement. 2️⃣ Email the photo to: billinggroup@klerksdorp.org or meter-reading@klerksdorp.org . Include your account number in the email subject line. If you do not have access to your electrical or water meter, you should mention this in your message. 3️⃣ Keep all photos stored safely as proof in case of billing disputes or system errors . The municipality has confirmed that all validly submitted readings will be used for account processing. 💬 Reactions and Context Local residents have expressed a mix of understanding and concern. While many acknowledge the municipality’s transparency about the contract’s expiration, others have questioned whether all consumers, particularly those without regular internet access, will manage to submit their readings consistently. Independent observers have noted that municipal self-reporting systems can be effective short-term solutions, but they rely heavily on public participation and administrative accuracy. Delays or inconsistencies in submissions may lead to disputes if not properly verified. Municipal representatives, however, maintain that the process is straightforward and temporary, designed to ensure continuity of billing and accountability while a permanent arrangement is finalised. 🏛️ Looking Ahead The City of Matlosana has assured residents that further communication will follow regarding the appointment of a new contractor or the rollout of an alternative digital submission system. In the meantime, residents are encouraged to stay proactive by submitting readings and continuing to pay their municipal accounts regularly. This development reflects broader challenges faced by municipalities across South Africa, where service contracts, budget constraints, and administrative delays often impact the delivery of basic utilities. For now, Matlosana residents are being asked to play an active role in maintaining billing accuracy through timely cooperation. #TheGoToGuy #Matlosana #MeterReadings #Klerksdorp #CommunityNotice #PublicUpdate #Electricity #Water #Municipality #ServiceDelivery #NorthWest 📸💡🏘️🧾📧
- 5 Common Myths About Solar Energy You Should Stop Believing
☀️ ☀️ ☀️ ☀️☀️ ☀️☀️ ☀️ Solar energy is booming across South Africa, and for good reason. With load-shedding, rising electricity costs, and growing awareness around sustainability, more households and businesses are turning to solar. But despite its popularity, a few myths still stop people from fully embracing the power of the sun. Let’s set the record straight. Image: The Go-To Guy Creations 🔋 Myth 1: Solar Power Doesn’t Work on Cloudy or Rainy Days Many assume that solar panels only generate power when the sun is blazing, but that’s not true. Solar panels absorb diffused sunlight , which means they still produce electricity even when it’s cloudy or raining. Yes, output is lower on overcast days, but a properly designed system includes batteries and inverters to ensure consistent power supply. ✅ Fact: Solar energy works all year round, even in winter, as long as panels are positioned correctly and kept clean. ⚙️ Myth 2: Solar Systems Are Too Expensive Solar used to be a costly investment, but prices have dropped dramatically over the past decade. The long-term savings on electricity bills far outweigh the initial installation cost. Many South Africans now install solar systems with financing or rent-to-own options, making it more affordable than ever. ✅ Fact: A solar setup often pays for itself within 4–7 years, depending on usage and system size. After that, your power is virtually free. 🏠 Myth 3: Solar Panels Require Constant Maintenance Another common misconception is that solar systems need a lot of upkeep. In reality, modern solar panels are low-maintenance. They’re designed to handle South Africa’s harsh weather and typically only need to be cleaned a few times a year to remove dust or bird droppings. ✅ Fact: With proper installation, your panels can last 25 years or more, with minimal effort. 🌍 Myth 4: Solar Can’t Power an Entire Home Many people think solar energy can only run a few lights or small appliances. That might have been true years ago, but today’s technology is far more powerful. With the right combination of panels, batteries, and inverters, a solar system can run everything from your fridge and geyser to your Wi-Fi and security systems. ✅ Fact: A full solar setup can make your home 100% energy-independent if designed correctly. 💡 Myth 5: Solar Power Isn’t Worth It Because of Load-Shedding Some think solar power won’t help during load-shedding, but that’s exactly where it shines (literally!). A hybrid solar system with a battery backup stores excess energy during the day and supplies it when the grid goes down. ✅ Fact: Solar keeps your lights, appliances, and internet running during load-shedding - no generator noise, no diesel smell, and no stress. ☀️ The Bottom Line Solar energy isn’t a luxury anymore, it’s a smart, sustainable solution for every South African household. With the right system, you can cut costs, reduce your carbon footprint, and enjoy reliable power year-round. It’s time to stop believing the myths and start harnessing the energy that shines over us every single day. 🌞 Save More, Live Brighter with Orka Solar Orka Solar, proudly based in Potchefstroom, blends engineering excellence with financial insight to deliver tailor-made solar solutions. Consecutive Mechanical and Infrastructure Challenges The JB Marks Local Municipality has provided an updated report on ongoing service disruptions affecting both refuse collection and water supply across parts of the municipality. The situation began on Monday, 13 October 2025 , when multiple refuse removal trucks experienced mechanical breakdowns, causing missed collections across four routes. On Tuesday, 14 October 2025 , the impact extended further as additional vehicles broke down, and operations at the Ventersdorp Water Treatment Plant continued to face interruptions due to emergency mechanical and electrical failures. Municipal officials confirmed that technical and engineering teams are actively addressing the issues, with work continuing around the clock to minimize inconvenience to residents. Image: The Go-To Guy Creations Refuse Collection Delays: Eight Routes Affected Over Two Days The municipality confirmed that a total of eight routes have been affected by refuse collection delays between Monday and Tuesday, due to the simultaneous failure of several municipal trucks. Routes affected on Monday, 13 October 2025: Taung Section Yizo Yizo & Skoti Phola Two Rooms, Loans & 4 Line Sections Witrand Hospital, SANDF & Dassierand Flats Routes affected on Tuesday, 14 October 2025: Dassierand Baillie Park Matlwang (including parts of Two Rooms and Kanana) Mohadin, Barcelona, Promosa, and Greenfields The municipality extends its sincere apologies to residents affected by these interruptions and confirms that repairs to the damaged trucks are underway. Once mechanical work is complete, backlog collections will be prioritized. Residents are encouraged to keep refuse securely stored to prevent littering and interference by stray animals. An updated collection schedule will be issued once the fleet is fully operational. Water Supply Breakdown: Ventersdorp Operations Still Underway The municipality also continues to attend to the emergency breakdown at the Ventersdorp Water Treatment Plant, which began on Monday, 13 October 2025.The malfunction, caused by a failure in key mechanical and electrical components, has forced the municipality to temporarily decommission the new plant while repairs are conducted. In the interim, water supply is being maintained through the old treatment plant, which cannot meet full demand. As a result, low pressure or intermittent water availability remains an issue in Tshing and Ventersdorp town. Replacement parts have been ordered and are expected to arrive imminently, after which the Water Services Department will proceed with immediate installation and system testing to restore full capacity. Residents are urged to use water sparingly during this period to help stabilize supply levels until the plant returns to normal operation. Image: The Go-To Guy Creations Resident Cooperation and Ongoing Communication The municipality appeals for continued patience and cooperation from residents as recovery operations proceed. The Waste Management and Water Services departments are coordinating closely to ensure rapid restoration of services while maintaining safety and compliance standards. - City of Matlosana intensifies efforts to prevent blockages and improve sanitation
Strengthening Essential Infrastructure The City of Matlosana has launched a sewer maintenance operation in Kanana , aimed at clearing blockages and restoring the smooth flow of wastewater through the local sewer network. The operation began on Monday, 13 October 2025 , and forms part of the municipality’s ongoing efforts to maintain essential infrastructure and ensure public health and hygiene within residential communities. Image: City of Matlosana Clearing Blockages and Preventing Future Disruptions Teams from the Sewer Department are currently deployed across key areas in Kanana, using high-pressure jetting equipment and manual tools to remove debris, sludge, and other obstructions from the pipelines. This proactive approach helps prevent major sewer overflows that could lead to environmental contamination, property damage, and health hazards. To support the long-term effectiveness of the maintenance programme, the municipality urges residents to play an active role in keeping the sewer system functional by adopting responsible disposal habits. Resident Advisory: Protecting the Sewer Network Residents are strongly advised to avoid disposing of inappropriate materials into drains or toilets. The following key practices are essential for preventing future blockages: 🚫 Do not litter or dump waste into sewer access points. 🚫 Avoid flushing sanitary products, wet wipes, or diapers , as these items do not break down easily. 🚫 Refrain from discarding non-biodegradable materials such as plastics and cloth into the sewer system. These simple actions can significantly reduce maintenance frequency, lower repair costs, and ensure that sewer services continue uninterrupted. Community Cooperation and Municipal Commitment The City of Matlosana Sewer Department has reaffirmed its commitment to delivering sustainable sanitation solutions while educating communities about proper waste management. Municipal teams will continue routine inspections and clearing operations throughout October to ensure that Kanana’s sewer infrastructure remains fully operational. The city also encourages residents to report sewer blockages or leaks immediately to ensure prompt intervention by technical crews. A Collective Effort for a Cleaner Community The sewer operation currently underway in Kanana highlights the City of Matlosana’s proactive stance on infrastructure maintenance and public health. By combining technical efficiency with community awareness , the municipality aims to create a cleaner, safer, and more resilient environment for all. Public cooperation remains the cornerstone of lasting sanitation improvement, together, both residents and the municipality can protect and preserve the integrity of Kanana’s sewer systems. #TheGoToGuy #CityOfMatlosana #KananaOperations #SewerMaintenance #PublicHealth #InfrastructureCare #CleanMatlosana #CommunityAwareness #ServiceDelivery #SanitationMatters 🚽🧰🏙️♻️💧
- City of Matlosana Leads Special Clean-Up Operation in Randlespark and Ellaton
Ensuring Clean and Safe Business Practices The City of Matlosana Local Municipality has reinforced its commitment to public health and business compliance through a targeted clean-up and inspection operation conducted in Randlespark and Ellaton on Friday, 11 October 2025 . This proactive initiative was carried out in collaboration with several key stakeholders, the Matlosana Law Enforcement Unit , the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality Environmental Health Services , the South African Police Service (SAPS) , and the Department of Home Affairs . Image: City of Matlosana Purpose and Scope of the Operation The special operation aimed to identify non-compliant business practices and ensure that trading environments within the city meet health, safety, and legal standards . Inspectors and enforcement officers conducted on-site evaluations across a range of establishments, focusing on product handling , storage conditions , and compliance with municipal and national trade regulations . While the majority of businesses in both Randlespark and Ellaton were found to be operating within acceptable compliance standards, several violations were recorded. These included: Improperly packaged and labelled products The sale of illegal or unregistered cosmetics Mixing of incompatible goods , which pose potential fire and health risks Expired food items still displayed for sale All identified non-compliant products were confiscated and safely disposed of in accordance with health and safety protocols. Strengthening Interdepartmental Collaboration The clean-up drive showcased effective intergovernmental coordination , with multiple departments working in unison to promote safe business practices and protect public welfare. The Department of Home Affairs assisted with verifying documentation of business owners and employees, while SAPS officers ensured security and compliance during the operation. This collaboration forms part of the City of Matlosana’s broader strategy to enhance urban management and ensure that local economic activity aligns with national standards for public safety and hygiene. Image: City of Matlosana Promoting Responsible Trading and Awareness The City’s Environmental Health and Law Enforcement officials emphasized the importance of education over punishment , encouraging traders to seek support when uncertain about compliance requirements. Business owners were reminded that they can consult the relevant departments for advice on product safety, packaging standards, and business licensing to avoid penalties or product confiscation in the future. The approach reflects a balance between regulation and empowerment , ensuring that small businesses, particularly informal traders, are guided towards sustainable, lawful, and hygienic operations. A Safer and Healthier Trading Environment The City of Matlosana reaffirmed its ongoing dedication to protecting both consumers and legitimate businesses through regular inspections and awareness initiatives. The municipality’s continued enforcement of public health standards not only improves safety but also enhances trust and confidence in the city’s trading environment. The Randlespark and Ellaton operation marks another step forward in the city’s mission to promote clean, compliant, and community-friendly commerce across all its regions. #TheGoToGuy #MatlosanaCleanUp #Randlespark #Ellaton #PublicHealth #EnvironmentalSafety #LocalCompliance #CityOfMatlosana #CommunityPartnership #SAPS #HomeAffairs #DrKennethKaundaDistrictMunicipality #SafeTrading 🚓🧹🏢♻️🇿🇦
- The Battle for ONE Champion Returns to Potchefstroom Country Club - 28 to 30 November
The greens at the Potchefstroom Country Club are set to heat up once again as the Battle for ONE Champion bowls event rolls into town from 28 to 30 November 2025. With R40,000 in price money and 24 teams vying for the title, it promises to be three days of competitive fun, questionable tactics, and the occasional “I swear it was the wind” excuse. Format and Entry Each team will need four players, with the format set as Trips, which, in typical bowls fashion, doesn’t involve any travel but will definitely include plenty of rolling. Teams can take advantage of rolling subs (for those who need a breather or a chat at the clubhouse) and power plays, because even lawn bowls needs a bit of drama. The entry fee is R3,000 per team, and the organisers are keeping things tight with a cap at 24 teams. Those keen to take part need to enter before 31 October 2025, or risk watching from the sidelines while pretending they were “never planning to play anyway”. Team Auction and Bragging Rights This year’s twist comes in the form of a Team Auction, where squads will go under the proverbial hammer. Whether that means strategic bidding or friendly sabotage remains to be seen, but it’s bound to add another layer of excitement to an already lively weekend. As always, there can only be ONE Champion, and the winners will walk away with not just a solid share of the R40,000 but also some serious bragging rights at the clubhouse. Event Details Venue: Potchefstroom Country Club, Mooi River Avenue, Potchefstroom Dates: 28–30 November 2025 Entry Fee: R3,000 per team Entries Close: 31 October 2025 Price Money: R40,000 Format: Trips (4 players per team), rolling subs, power plays Contacts Stuart: 082-806-3026 Albert: 071-678-5988 If you know someone who fancies themselves the next bowls superstar (or just likes wearing wide-brimmed hats), let them know, The Battle for ONE Champion is calling.

- Make Your Ballsiest Move Yet: Hollard Daredevil Run Heads to Potchefstroom - 31 October
The Hollard Daredevil Run is coming to Potchefstroom this October, inviting local gents to take to the streets in nothing but their trademark purple Speedos, all for a seriously good cause. Event Details Date: Friday, 31 October 2025 Time: 15:00 Venue: Pad Langs Address: Modderdam Road, Vyfhoek Plot 91, Potchefstroom Entry Fee: R180 per person Entries are open at www.ticketpro.co.za , and the fee includes a couriered registration pack and, of course, the famous complimentary purple Speedo. A Run With a Purpose The Hollard Daredevil Run isn’t your typical jog. It’s a tongue-in-cheek challenge with a serious message, to raise awareness around prostate and testicular cancer and to encourage men to take their health seriously. Funds raised through the event go directly to the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) and the Prostate Cancer Foundation of South Africa. The money supports testing in under-resourced areas, as well as awareness, support, and ongoing research. The event has grown steadily each year, with past runs drawing crowds from schools, corporates, community groups and first-timers alike. This year, organisers hope to top those numbers and keep the conversation around men’s health moving, loudly and proudly. Don’t Feel Like Running? Not everyone’s up for a Speedo sprint, and that’s perfectly fine. Those who prefer to contribute from the sidelines can donate through BackaBuddy or directly into the event account to help fund testing and awareness drives. QR codes for both options are available on event posters. Be bold. Be brave. Be a Daredevil. It’s a light-hearted way to tackle a heavy topic, because sometimes, starting the conversation is half the battle.
