  • The Hidden Impact of Hate on Shelter Workers and Animal Welfare

Across the country, animal shelters play a vital role in protecting vulnerable animals, often under immense pressure and limited resources. Yet in recent years, shelter staff have increasingly found themselves at the receiving end of relentless criticism, verbal attacks, and online hostility. This growing trend of public negativity not only affects the emotional well-being of these workers but also directly influences the quality of care animals receive. This article examines how hate, misunderstanding, and misinformation impact shelter environments and what communities can do to support those dedicating their lives to animal welfare. Image: The Go-To Guy Creations The Reality of Shelter Work Animal shelters rely on teams of highly committed individuals who dedicate long hours to caring for abandoned, injured, and neglected animals. Their daily responsibilities include medical care, rehabilitation, intake procedures, adoptions, and at times making difficult decisions based on animal welfare realities. However, they commonly operate under conditions that the public may not fully see, overcrowded facilities, financial constraints, emotionally taxing cases, and limited manpower. When external hostility is added to this already heavy workload, the challenges can become overwhelming. Understanding the Sources of Criticism 1. Misunderstanding Shelter Operations Many detractors lack insight into how shelters function. Decisions regarding treatment, capacity, or euthanasia are often complex, guided by legislation, veterinary recommendations, and the best interest of animal welfare. Without understanding these factors, the public may form inaccurate assumptions. 2. Public Outcry After Isolated Incidents When stories of animal neglect or cruelty surface, community outrage is natural. However, this frustration is sometimes misdirected at shelters, even those not involved in the incident, intensifying scrutiny and placing workers under undue pressure. 3. Social Media Amplification Online platforms can spread criticism rapidly. Posts lacking context or accuracy can escalate into verbal attacks and harassment. For many shelter staff, this online negativity becomes a daily burden that follows them long after they leave the workplace. The Psychological Toll on Workers Emotional Burnout and Compassion Fatigue Working with animals in distress is emotionally draining. Constant negativity from the public can push workers to compassion fatigue, where they feel numb or detached from the animals they deeply care for. Chronic Stress and Anxiety Feeling the need to constantly defend their work creates persistent stress. For some workers, this stress affects sleep, mental health, and daily functioning, directly influencing how effectively they can perform their duties. Isolation and Decreased Morale Shelter staff may feel unfairly judged or alienated from their own communities. Over time, this erodes morale and diminishes the passion that brought them into the field in the first place. Effects on Animal Welfare 1. Reduced Quality of Care When staff are emotionally overwhelmed, their ability to maintain high levels of care naturally declines. Exhaustion and stress can lead to slower response times, mistakes, or difficulty managing the needs of multiple animals. 2. High Turnover and Loss of Skilled Workers Burnout leads many experienced employees to leave. This creates a cycle where shelters lose institutional knowledge, animal-handling expertise, and stability, making operations harder for remaining staff. 3. Damaged Community Engagement Negative public perception can discourage potential adopters, volunteers, and donors from supporting shelters. This directly affects the number of animals rehomed and the resources available for care. Building a More Supportive Environment The challenges shelter workers face are real and far-reaching, but they are not unsolvable. Communities can help by: Educating themselves on shelter operations and constraints Engaging respectfully and constructively on social media Supporting shelters through donations, volunteering, or adoption Extending empathy to staff navigating emotionally demanding environments A more compassionate, informed public ultimately leads to healthier shelters and better outcomes for animals. Image: The Go-To Guy Creations Call to Action Support your local shelters, such as PAWS Haven / Carletonville SPCA / Orkney & Klerksdorp Animal Shelter , by donating, volunteering, adopting, or simply sharing their efforts within your community. Every act of support helps create a safer, kinder environment for both the animals and the people who care for them. Together, we can foster a culture of empathy and understanding across all animal welfare organisations.

  • Ventersdorp Set for Planned Power Outage as JB Marks Conducts Safety and Compliance Operations

Residents across the JB Marks Local Municipality region are being notified of significant infrastructure and safety developments affecting both Ventersdorp and Potchefstroom. The municipality has issued a public notice regarding an upcoming planned electricity outage linked to major upgrades at the Ventersdorp Main Intake Substation. In a separate update, Ward 24 officials in Potchefstroom conducted a multidisciplinary compliance operation aimed at improving safety and order in the central business district. Together, these developments reflect ongoing municipal efforts to strengthen service delivery, upgrade infrastructure, and enhance public safety. Planned Electricity Outage in Ventersdorp on 3 December The JB Marks Local Municipality has announced a scheduled electricity interruption for Wednesday, 03 December 2025 , running from 06h00 to 18h00 . The outage is required to facilitate the installation and commissioning of a new 11kV Breaker Panel  at the Ventersdorp Main Intake Substation. In addition, the municipality will be commissioning a newly constructed 11kV overhead power line  that supplies electricity to Tshing Ext 10 . Municipal technicians will also be coupling a new breaker to the existing panel board. Due to the technical nature of the work and for the safety of electrical operators, the entire substation must be switched off for the full duration of the project. Areas Affected Residents in the following areas should expect a disruption to supply: Town Area Tshing Township Toevlug Moosa Park Boikhutso Boikhutsong Appledraai Surrounding farming communities The municipality has emphasised that power may be restored earlier  than anticipated. Residents are therefore urged to treat all electrical infrastructure as live at all times and to plan accordingly. Officials have apologised for any inconvenience caused and encouraged the public to take the necessary precautions during the maintenance period. Ward 24 Safety and Compliance Operation in Potchefstroom In a parallel initiative, JB Marks Ward 24 Councillor Sean Trautmann  participated in a multidisciplinary operation on 21 November . The operation brought together teams from Fire Safety, Food Safety, Community Safety, Electricity, Infrastructure, Building Inspectors , and the Local Economic Development (LED)  department. The teams conducted inspections on businesses and buildings in and around the Ward 24 taxi rank , an area that has faced increasing concerns related to safety, compliance, and general regulation. The operation focused on identifying risks, enforcing compliance standards, and improving the overall safety of the busy commuter hub. The LED team also engaged with local traders, assisting residents in securing hawkers’ permits and ensuring all informal and formal traders are compliant with permit regulations. This support is part of the municipality’s broader efforts to stabilise trading environments, strengthen local business practices, and promote legal, regulated economic activity. Municipal leadership noted that these actions form part of an ongoing strategy to combat the crime pandemic in the CBD of Potchefstroom , while ensuring that public spaces remain safe, orderly, and well-regulated for all residents, commuters, and businesses. Final Thought Both the planned Ventersdorp power outage and the Ward 24 safety operation reflect the JB Marks Municipality’s continued focus on infrastructure upgrades, service delivery improvements, and community safety. Residents are encouraged to stay informed, plan for scheduled disruptions, and cooperate with regulatory initiatives aimed at creating safer and more functional public spaces.

Jy moet net opdaag. Die res word vir jou uitgefigure.

  • Praise Convoy of Hope set to Roar for Jesus this December - 6 December

Car owners in Vredefort and Mokwallo are planning to swap the usual Christmas jingles for something with a bit more horsepower. The Praise Convoy of Hope, also called “Roar for Jesus With Joyful Noise”, is happening on Saturday 6 December 2025, with engines expected to start revving from 18h00. The idea behind the noise The convoy is inviting anyone with a “roaring” car, and basically anyone who loves a loud set of wheels, to join a drive through the streets as a public act of worship. Organisers say the goal is to bring joyful sound and united praise into the community, and to turn that noise into a prayer on wheels. In their words, it’s a kind of spiritual battle cry aimed at pushing back against poverty, addiction, abuse, neglect and sickness, and calling for freedom and restoration. The event leans on the theme “Roar for Jesus”, pointing to Jesus as the “Lion of the Tribe of Judah”, and encouraging Christians to be bold, courageous and vocal about their faith. When and where The convoy takes place in Vredefort. No venue is listed because the road is the venue. The drive begins at 18h00 on 6 December, so anyone joining should be ready to roll by late afternoon. How to get more info For direct queries, the contact numbers are: Zuanne-Marie: 081 760 2772 Tristan: 068 392 2462 Leon: 064 017 8854 What to expect If the organisers get what they’re hoping for, Saturday evening will feature a line-up of cars in all shapes, sizes, colours and custom builds moving together through town, making a joyful racket for a cause bigger than chrome and tyres. Drivers who normally get told to “keep it down” might finally have a religious exemption. Either way, the message is simple: bring your car, bring your faith, and bring your loudest “roar” for a Christmas season that starts with a convoy instead of a choir.

Die venue is by 190 Peter Mokaba St, Central, Potchefstroom. Kaartjies is R550 per persoon.

  • 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence Begins: A Call to Action for Safer Communities

The annual 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence , observed from 25 November to 10 December , has officially begun, a period recognised globally and locally as a time for reflection, awareness, and united action against violence in all its forms. For communities across South Africa, the campaign serves as a reminder that safety, dignity, and protection are not privileges but basic human rights. A Time to Stand Together The start of the campaign marks an important moment for families, organisations, and communities to actively acknowledge the impact of GBV. While statistics and stories often dominate headlines, the heart of the campaign lies in people, the survivors, the families affected, and the community structures working every day to create safer environments. The opening of the 16 days highlights the ongoing need for: Raising awareness Strengthening community support Encouraging reporting Providing accessible help Supporting survivors with dignity Community Efforts Already Underway Across towns and cities, local groups, safety networks, and social organisations are preparing activities that focus on education, prevention, and empowerment. Workshops, peaceful marches, awareness drives, counselling support, and outreach programmes all play a role in strengthening local anti-GBV efforts. These initiatives are designed to encourage residents to: Learn how to recognise signs of abuse Understand where to find help Support survivors without judgement Speak out against silence and stigma A Reminder That Action Begins at Home The campaign also encourages everyday conversations, in homes, workplaces, schools, and community spaces. Challenging harmful behaviour, addressing toxic norms, and supporting victims begins on a personal level long before it becomes a public campaign. The message remains clear : Everyone has a role to play in preventing GBV. Support Services and Safe Spaces Local hospitals, social workers, community policing structures, and NGOs continue to provide crucial assistance for victims of abuse. Medical care, trauma counselling, legal guidance, and safe accommodation remain essential resources during this period and throughout the year. Residents are encouraged to keep emergency contact numbers accessible and share verified information within their communities to ensure support reaches those who need it. A Collective Commitment The opening of the 16 Days of Activism is more than an event, it is a collective commitment to building safer, stronger, and more compassionate communities. By participating, raising awareness, or simply supporting someone who needs help, every individual contributes to the broader fight against Gender-Based Violence. As the campaign unfolds, community voices grow louder with one message: No more silence. No more violence.

Kaartjies is R150 per persoon. Dit sluit die Kersprogram en ete in. So ja, vir daai bedrag kry jy meer as net ’n bord kos, jy kry ’n hele aand se vibe. Waar kry jy kaartjies?

  • Child Welfare Potchefstroom gears up for Outdoor Family Fiesta - Postpone due to weather

Child Welfare Potchefstroom is preparing for a lively community afternoon with its upcoming Outdoor Family Fiesta. The organisation hopes to draw families, friends and even the odd curious neighbour for a relaxed day out that won’t require any complicated planning or polished picnic baskets. Event details The fiesta takes place on Saturday, 29 November 2025 at 15:00 at Piet Bosman Stadium in Potchefstroom. The event is positioned as a simple get-together that lets everyone unwind while supporting a local cause. Tickets are available directly from the Child and Family Welfare office. Prices are straightforward R50 for children under 12 R100 for adults and children over 12 R300 for a family package for four The team can be contacted on 018-293-0425, 082-856-5247 or 061-587-7928, and by email at supervisorpotchcw@gmail.com Extra callout for vendors In addition to inviting the public, Child Welfare Potchefstroom is calling for vendors who would like to be part of the day. Anyone with a stall idea that ranges from food to crafts to “whatever you can fit on a trestle table” is welcome to enquire. The organisation encourages early bookings to avoid last-minute scrambles. What to expect While the details are kept intentionally simple, the promise is clear. The day is described as one filled with fun, which in South African terms usually translates to children running around, adults finding the shadiest spots and a general atmosphere of friendly chaos. The event also doubles as a fundraising drive for Child and Family Welfare Potchefstroom, allowing the community to show support without needing to dress up, sit still or interpret formal speeches. The Outdoor Family Fiesta aims to bring residents together in a casual setting while helping a long-standing welfare organisation continue its work. Whether attending with family, joining as a vendor or simply spreading the word, community involvement remains the heart of the day.

  • NWWG League Finals 2025: A Celebration of Competition, Camaraderie & Class

⛳⛳⛳⛳⛳⛳⛳⛳⛳⛳ The fairways of Klerksdorp came alive with skill, spirit, and sportsmanship as the North West Women’s Golf League Finals 2025 teed off in spectacular fashion. With vibrant energy and a beautifully prepared course, it was a day that celebrated the best of women’s golf in the province. Image: North West Women’s Golf A Day of Fierce Play and Fair Sportsmanship As the season culminated, Orkney and Rustenburg squared off for top honours, while Magaliespark Meerkatte took on Potchefstroom in the playoff for third place. The action was intense, the drives long, and the putts precise, until Mother Nature made her own play. ⚡ Due to inclement weather, the final playoff between Orkney and Rustenburg was called off. But instead of letting the rain dull the day, the committee made a gracious call to crown both teams as co-champions, a true testament to the spirit of the game. 🏆 Meanwhile, Magaliespark Meerkatte clinched a well-deserved third place, defeating a tough Potchefstroom side with resilience and teamwork. Thank You, Klerksdorp! A special thank-you goes out to the Klerksdorp team for hosting the finals with such warmth and professionalism. From course setup to hospitality, everything reflected excellence and care. Golf Wins Again While results matter, what stood out most was the camaraderie, laughter, and respect shared by all the teams. Golf was, once again, the ultimate winner. Here’s to another season of growth, friendship, and fearless swings.
