- Heartbreak in the Rain: NWU Eagles Fall to Tuks in Title Decider
The roar of a capacity crowd at Tuks Stadium and a relentless Pretoria downpour set the stage for a titanic 2026 FNB Varsity Cup final. It was a clash of the titans, featuring the two best teams in the country: the table-topping FNB UP-Tuks and FNB NWU Eagles. While the scoreboard at the end of eighty minutes told a sobering story for the Potchefstroom faithful, the season concluded with a silver lining as the Eagles dominated the individual season accolades. Despite the 31-3 defeat, we celebrate the incredible individual prowess of Ricardo Fourie , named the FNB Forward That Rocks , and Matthew Fortuin , who secured back-to-back FNB Back That Rocks titles. A Promising Start in Muddy Waters The opening exchanges suggested a much closer contest than the final score would indicate. The Eagles looked comfortable in the wet conditions, finding their footing early and applying significant pressure on the Tuks defensive line. The NWU pack, led by the industrious Ricardo Fourie, seemed to relish the physical battle in the trenches. This early dominance was rewarded in the 18th minute when flyhalf MJ Mostert stepped up to slot a penalty, giving the Eagles an early 3-0 lead. For the first quarter of the match, it was the Purple Reign that looked more likely to seize the crown. However, the "Stripe Generation" is not a record-holding side for nothing. Tuks responded quickly through the boot of Divan Du Toit to level the scores, and as the rain intensified, so did the pressure from the Pretoria forwards. A pivotal moment arrived just before the break when Tuks were awarded a penalty try, handing them a 10-3 lead and shifting the momentum firmly in favor of the hosts. The Second Half Surge The second stanza proved to be a difficult outing for the Eagles. As the turf became increasingly treacherous, the Tuks machine found another gear. The Eagles' defense, which had been a wall for much of the season, was finally breached by a moment of brilliance from Andile Myeni, who executed a stunning solo Point of Origin (POR) try. This was followed shortly by a powerful surge from Jean Fourie. While the NWU Eagles fought gallantly to find a way back into the game, the conditions and a clinical Tuks tactical kicking game kept them pinned in their own half. Divan du Toit’s 50m penalty was the dagger that stretched the lead beyond reach, sealing a record sixth title for the Pretoria outfit. Individual Brilliance Amidst the Storm Though the team trophy eluded the Eagles this year, the individual awards ceremony highlighted why NWU remains a powerhouse of South African rugby talent. Ricardo Fourie was officially recognized as the FNB Forward That Rocks , taking home a R7,500 prize for his consistent dominance in the scrums and loose play throughout 2026. In the backline, history was made as Matthew Fortuin was voted the FNB Back That Rocks for the second consecutive year. To win this award back-to-back in a competition as fierce as the Varsity Cup is a testament to Fortuin's world-class finishing and defensive reliability. Unfortunately, it wasn't a clean sweep for the NWU support staff, as our Cheerleaders narrowly missed out on the "Cheerleaders That Rock" title this year. Final Whistle The 2026 journey ends with the Eagles as the second-best team in the land—a feat that requires immense sacrifice and skill. While the rain in Pretoria may have dampened the jerseys, it cannot wash away a season of brilliant rugby. We salute the players, the coaching staff, and especially our award winners, Fourie and Fortuin, for representing the Purple Reign with such distinction. We will regroup, we will recharge, and we will be back to reclaim the throne. #NWUEagles #Varsity Cup #PurpleReign 🦅🏉💜

- Dante’s Pizza & Pasta: Where a Son’s Legacy Lives On in Every Flavor
Sometimes the most beautiful stories are born from the deepest heartbreak. For the owners of Dante’s Pizza & Pasta, establishing their restaurant was not merely a business decision, but a brave step toward making beauty rise from ashes. Today, Dante’s is more than just a place for delicious food; it is a living tribute to a short, precious life. An Origin of Love and Loss In 2011, the owners lost their firstborn son, Dante. In the wake of this tragedy, they moved from Pretoria back to their hometown to be near their support system. After a year of mourning and healing, the vision of a "café" where friends could gather and relax began to take shape. They decided to launch a takeaway-based pizzeria, and the name was non-negotiable: Dante’s. It was a way to ensure their son’s name would carry on for as long as their doors remained open. On 28 January 2013, those doors opened, and Klerksdorp immediately embraced the new flavor in town. People, Passion, and the "Secret Ingredient" While the owner playfully declines to divulge the exact secret ingredient of their most popular dishes, it is clear that pride and care are the foundation of every order. The team of 12, consisting of 10 women and 2 men, does not function as mere employees, but as a tight-knit unit. "Respect is the key," the owner explains. Their motto, "Where customers become family," is not just a slogan; it is lived daily through a hands-on, personal approach to every aspect of the business. Challenges and Milestones: From Covid to Growth Like many businesses, the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic brought immense uncertainty. Yet, Dante’s emerged stronger on the other side. When they reopened for deliveries on 1 May 2020, the business experienced its best turnover to date. This resilience proved that the brand had become an indispensable part of the Klerksdorp community. A Vision for the Future Dante’s has recently moved into new premises, and the future looks bright. Customers can look forward to: More Special Events: Following the success of hosting artists like Schalk Bezuidenhout, more comedy and live entertainment are in the works. Mediterranean Evenings: Nights filled with Mediterranean flavors and live singers. National Expansion: The dream for the next 5 to 10 years is to see more Dante’s Pizza & Pasta stores established nationwide. Dante’s stands as proof that passion, when coupled with a deeper purpose, can have a powerful impact on a community. Visit Dante’s Pizza & Pasta: The Heritage: Founded in memory of Dante (Opened 2013). The Specialty: Pizza and Pasta prepared with pride. The Experience: Where every guest is treated like family. #DantesPizza #KlerksdorpEats #DantesLegacy #PizzaAndPasta #KlerksdorpBusiness #WhereCustomersBecomeFamily #FamilyBusiness #SouthAfricaEats #Tribute
- Potchefstroom Dorp Women Secure Hard-Fought Victory Against Welkom Amidst Injury Crisis
The spirit of club rugby was on full display this past weekend as the Potchefstroom Dorp Women’s Rugby team clinicaly dispatched their rivals from Welkom Women’s Rugby in a Carien Broodryk League encounter that tested the squad's depth to its absolute limits. In a match defined by physical attrition and tactical discipline, the Potch Dorp side emerged with a 21–17 victory on April 11th, proving that championships are often won not just by the starting fifteen, but by the resilience of the entire roster. A Dominant Start Met by Unexpected Adversity The match kicked off under favorable conditions, with the Potchefstroom side looking sharp, organized, and physically prepared for the onslaught. From the opening whistle, the home side established a rhythm that signaled their intent to control the pace of the game. However, the unpredictability of rugby soon took center stage. In a series of unfortunate events early in the first half, Potch Dorp was rocked by three significant injuries to core players. Key playmakers Verana van Heerden (knee), Kiara Sida (shoulder), and the influential Didi were all forced to leave the field prematurely. For most teams, losing three specialist starters in the opening quarter would lead to a breakdown in communication and a loss of momentum. Yet, it was at this exact moment that the true character of the Potchefstroom Dorp Rugby Klub was revealed. Bench Strength and Tactical Discipline The players called up from the bench did more than just fill gaps; they stepped into the heat of the battle with a "sokkies optrek" (pull up your socks) mentality. There was no room for hesitation as the substitutes integrated seamlessly into the defensive line and the offensive structures. This seamless transition ensured that the team did not "laat die pap op die grond val" (let the porridge fall on the ground), maintaining their lead despite the shifting personnel. The foundation of this victory was built in the trenches. Potch Dorp’s forwards put on a masterclass in set-piece execution: Scrum Dominance: The front row consistently applied pressure, winning crucial turnovers and providing a stable platform for the backs. Lineout Precision: Despite the height and athleticism of the Welkom side, Potch Dorp retained possession throughout the match, winning nearly every one of their own throws. Scoring Breakdown and Individual Brilliance The scoring was a testament to the team's varied attacking options. The tries were spread across the park, highlighting a balanced offensive strategy: Martha Yokwane crossed the white line after a period of sustained pressure, showing great strength to break through the Welkom defense. Verana van Heerden contributed a vital try before her unfortunate departure due to injury. Lizzy Diseko added the final touch to the scoreboard, capping off a brilliant team effort with a try that ultimately sealed the result. The kicking game proved to be the difference-maker in such a tight contest. Verana van Heerden successfully slotted one conversion, while Kiara Sida added two more, ensuring that nearly every scoring opportunity was maximized before they were sidelined. Player of the Match: Fodo Magafeng While the collective effort was undeniable, the afternoon belonged to Fodo Magafeng . Named the Player of the Match , Magafeng delivered a performance characterized by tireless work rates and inspirational leadership. Whether it was putting in bone-crunching tackles or making decisive runs into the heart of the Welkom defense, her presence on the field was a beacon of stability during the team's injury-induced transitions. Her dedication to the jersey and her ability to inspire those around her earned her the highest honors of the day. Final Whistle As the final whistle blew, the 21–17 scoreline reflected a match that was as close as it was hard-hitting. For Potchefstroom Dorp Women’s Rugby, this victory is more than just another notch in the win column; it is a statement of intent for the rest of the season. They have shown that they possess the grit to overcome mid-game crises and the technical skill to dominate the set-pieces. While the medical staff will be busy assessing the injuries of the fallen stars, the rest of the league has been put on notice: Potch Dorp is a team that refuses to back down. #PotchDorpRugby #WomensRugby #CarienBroodrykLeague #RugbyVictory 🏉🏆🔥💪

- Archbishop Desmond Tutu: The Moral Architect of the Rainbow Nation
The 20th century was defined by intense ideological conflicts, but few figures navigated them with the moral clarity of Archbishop Desmond Mpilo Tutu. From his birth in a segregated mining town to his role as a global human rights icon, Tutu’s life serves as a comprehensive case study in the transition from systemic oppression to restorative justice. Image: Archbishop Desmond Mpilo Tutu His legacy is built upon the synthesis of Christian theology and the African philosophy of Ubuntu, providing a framework for reconciliation that continues to influence global peacebuilding. The Crucible of Klerksdorp: Early Formative Years Desmond Tutu was born on October 7, 1931, in the "old location" of Klerksdorp, a mining town in the Transvaal. This location was the geographic and social foundation of his moral consciousness. A Multi-Ethnic Foundation: Born to a Xhosa father, Zachariah, and a Motswana mother, Aletta, Tutu’s identity was a blend of South African cultures. Klerksdorp served as a melting pot that prefigured his "Rainbow Nation" theology. Physical Resilience: In Klerksdorp, Tutu faced his first existential battles. He survived polio as an infant, which left him with a permanently weakened right hand, and a three-year battle with tuberculosis as a teenager. Daily Realities of Apartheid: Growing up in a mining hub, he witnessed extreme economic disparity. His mother worked as a domestic servant, and his father was a school principal. Tutu often noted that even in this segregated environment, he saw "inconsistencies" in racism, white citizens walking around a newspaper he was reading on the ground rather than stepping on it, suggesting to him that the humanity of the oppressor was buried, not absent. Image: Desmond Tutu family home Milestones of Early Resilience (1931–1954) Year Event Impact 1931 Birth in Klerksdorp Born at the intersection of mining labor and intellectual discipline. 1932 Polio Diagnosis Survived without a vaccine; resulted in lifelong physical atrophy. 1946 Tuberculosis A three-year recovery that forged his spiritual endurance. 1954 Graduation Pivoted from medicine to education due to the high costs for Black students. The Pivot to Priesthood: Resisting "Bantu Education" Tutu initially sought a career in teaching, but the Bantu Education Act of 1953 forced a moral crossroads. This legislation was designed to provide Black South Africans with an inferior curriculum focused on manual labor. Government officials openly stated that Black students did not need mathematics or science for roles they would never be allowed to fill. Refusing to participate in what he termed "thin gruel," Tutu resigned from teaching in 1957. He entered the Anglican priesthood, viewing the church as a platform that maintained relative autonomy from the state. By 1961, he was ordained a priest, just one year after the Sharpeville Massacre, where police killed 69 peaceful protesters. This event solidified his conviction that the church must act as a political and moral conscience. The Theology of Ubuntu and Human Dignity During his studies at King’s College London (1962–1966), Tutu refined his theological worldview. He focused on Imago Dei, the belief that all humans are created in God’s image. This, combined with Ubuntu ("I am because we are"), became his primary weapon against apartheid. The Core Pillars of Tutu’s Framework Interdependence: The belief that no human is an island; our humanity is caught up in the humanity of others. Restorative Justice: A focus on healing the community and restoring relationships rather than purely retributive punishment. Radical Inclusivity: The conviction that even the oppressor’s humanity is diminished by their cruelty and requires "liberation" from their own hate. Global Leadership and the Nobel Peace Prize In 1978, Tutu became the General Secretary of the South African Council of Churches (SACC). With political organizations like the ANC banned, the SACC became a primary legal voice for the oppressed. Tutu used this platform to advocate for international economic sanctions. Image: Archbishop Desmond Tutu received the Nobel Peace Prize In 1984, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. This international recognition provided him with a "bulletproof" status, making it politically difficult for the South African government to silence him. He used the prize money to fund scholarships for Black students, doubling down on his commitment to the nation's youth. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) Following the 1994 democratic elections, President Nelson Mandela appointed Tutu to chair the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. The TRC was a groundbreaking experiment in transitional justice, investigating human rights abuses committed between 1960 and 1994. Restorative vs. Retributive Justice Unlike the Nuremberg trials, the TRC offered amnesty for truth. Perpetrators could receive amnesty if they provided a full, public disclosure of their actions. While critics felt it traded justice for stability, Tutu argued that "without forgiveness, there is no future." Aspect Restorative Justice (TRC) Retributive Justice (Nuremberg) Primary Goal Healing and Reconciliation Punishment and Deterrence Focus The Victim and the Community The Crime and the Law Incentive Amnesty for Full Disclosure Prosecution and Sentencing The Modern Dissident: Post-Apartheid Activism In his later years, Tutu remained a "watchdog" of democracy. He was a vocal critic of corruption within the ANC, famously clashing with Presidents Thabo Mbeki (over HIV/AIDS denialism) and Jacob Zuma (over state capture). He also became a pioneer for LGBTQ+ rights, stating he would not "worship a God who is homophobic." This stance created friction within the global Anglican Communion but remained consistent with his belief that any form of discrimination was an affront to the human spirit. Legacy and the "Rainbow Nation" Archbishop Tutu passed away on December 26, 2021. While his vision of the "Rainbow Nation" remains a work in progress, hampered by ongoing economic inequality and systemic corruption, his life provided a moral vocabulary for the 21st century. Image: Archbishop Desmond Tutu Street in Klerksdorp His birth home in Klerksdorp stands today as a heritage site, a reminder that the "Crucible" of oppression can produce a voice that eventually thunders across the world. #DesmondTutu #Ubuntu #RestorativeJustice #TruthAndReconciliation #TheArch
- Curro Klerksdorp U19B Girls Secure Hard-Fought Draw in Tournament Final
Curro Klerksdorp U19B girls' hockey team concluded an impressive tournament run with a display of resilience and high-level teamwork in a tense final against Louis Trichardt. Despite a dominant performance that saw the match end in a stalemate, tournament technicalities ultimately decided the final standings. Image: Curro Klerksdorp A Tightly Contested Final The final was a showcase of defensive grit and tactical play from both sides. Curro Klerksdorp fought through every quarter, ending the regulation time in a 1–1 draw. The result reflected the equal strength of the two teams on the day, with Curro showing significant "heart" and determination to keep the scores level. Tournament Rules Decide the Outcome Under the specific regulations of the tournament, a draw in the final necessitated a look back at previous encounters to determine the overall winner. Because Louis Trichardt had secured a narrow 1–0 victory in an earlier round-robin match against Curro Klerksdorp, they were awarded the tournament title based on that head-to-head advantage. Pride in Performance Although the official trophy went to their opponents, the Curro Klerksdorp coaching staff and school community expressed immense pride in the team’s development. The U19B girls were praised for their: Resilience: Coming back to draw against a team that had previously beaten them. Teamwork: Maintaining structure and communication under the pressure of a final. - TGTG Community Service: Finding the right au pair for your family, and the right family for your skills
A free matchmaking service from The Go-To Guy that takes the guesswork out of finding an au pair in Potchefstroom. THE PROBLEM WITH HOW PEOPLE LOOK FOR AU PAIRS We see it constantly. A family posts a single line on a WhatsApp group: “Looking for an au pair, Potchefstroom area.” That is the entire post. No mention of how many children they have, what ages the children are, what the schedule looks like, whether they need someone with a driver’s licence, whether cooking or homework help is part of the job, or what they are willing to pay. On the other side, someone looking for au pair work replies with: “I am available. Please call me.” Nothing about their experience with children, what age groups they are comfortable with, whether they have first aid training, what languages they speak, or when they can start. The result is predictable. A family hires someone who is not suited to their household. An au pair arrives at a home and discovers expectations that were never discussed. Within weeks, the arrangement falls apart, and both sides are back on WhatsApp posting the same one-liners. The Go-To Guy built a structured system to fix this, and it is completely free for both families and au pairs. HOW THE TGTG AU PAIR SERVICE WORKS This is not a classified ad. It is a matchmaking platform designed around the reality that every family is different, every child is different, and every au pair brings a different set of skills and experience. The system works in four steps: Families register their au pair need by completing a detailed form that captures everything an au pair would need to know before accepting a position. Au pairs register their profile by completing a matching form that captures their experience, qualifications, personality, availability, and what they bring to a family. Both sides can browse. Families can view registered au pair profiles with full details. Au pairs can view available positions and what each family is looking for. Families can download a free interview guide with 13 categories of questions to help them conduct proper interviews with shortlisted candidates. FOR FAMILIES: WHAT THE JOB REGISTRATION FORM CAPTURES The form is thorough for a reason. An au pair is not a domestic worker. They are being trusted with your children, your routines, and often your home. Here is what the family registration captures and why each detail matters: Your family introduction: This is where you describe your family to potential au pairs. How many children you have, their ages and genders, any special needs, and a sense of what your family is like. This is the single most important section because it gives the au pair a picture of who they would be caring for. The type of person you are looking for: Qualities you value, such as responsibility, flexibility, patience, or a nurturing nature. Your family’s values around discipline, routines, and general behaviour. This is where you filter for personality fit, not just skills. Detailed job description: What the role actually involves day to day. This includes supervising children’s activities, preparing meals, bath time and bedtime routines, homework and tutoring assistance, school drop-offs and pick-ups, extracurricular activities, and any additional duties like light housekeeping or pet care. If any of your children have medical conditions or require special care, this is where you mention it. Language requirements: Your home language and the languages you need the au pair to speak. This is critical, especially in a multilingual area like Potchefstroom. Schedule and availability: Working hours, days required, whether the position is full-time or part-time, and any flexibility or additional hours needed. Transport requirements: Whether a driver’s licence is required and whether the au pair needs their own vehicle for transporting children. Accommodation: If the position includes live-in arrangements, you describe the living quarters and facilities available. Education and qualifications: Any required certifications such as CPR or first aid training, preferred level of experience, and specific skills you need. Travel expectations: If your family travels and expects the au pair to join, this is where you outline those arrangements. Remuneration: What you are offering in terms of salary and benefits, stated upfront. Register your family’s au pair need here: www.thegotoguy.co.za/au-pair-job-registration Browse registered au pairs here: www.thegotoguy.co.za/au-pairs FOR AU PAIRS: WHAT THE REGISTRATION FORM CAPTURES Your profile is what families see first. The more detail you provide, the better your chances of being matched with a family that is right for you. Here is what gets captured: Your photo: A clear, professional head-and-shoulders image. Profiles with photos receive significantly more interest from families. Personal details: Your name, contact information, ID or passport, suburb, age, gender, and citizenship status. Families need to know the basics before considering a match. Transport: Whether you have your own vehicle and whether you hold a driver’s licence. Many au pair positions require transporting children to school and activities, so this is often a deciding factor. Languages: Your home language and all additional languages you speak. In Potchefstroom, where families speak Afrikaans, English, Setswana, and other languages, this is one of the first filters families use. Experience: Whether you have worked as an au pair before (permanent, temporary, or first time), and a free-text section where you can describe your experience in detail. Your personality and story: A section where you introduce yourself to potential families. This is your chance to show who you are as a person, not just what you can do. Families are inviting you into their home, and they want to know they can trust you with their children. Educational background: Your qualifications and studies. First aid: Whether you hold a first aid certificate, are busy with one, or are willing to obtain one. Cooking ability: Whether you are an excellent home cook, a general cook, or not confident in the kitchen. Many families include meal preparation as part of the au pair role, so honesty here prevents mismatches. Tutoring and homework: Your comfort level and experience with helping children with schoolwork and educational activities. Availability: Full-time or part-time, when you can start, and any additional detail about your schedule. Salary expectations and live-in: What you are looking for in terms of pay, and whether you are open to a stay-in position. Register as an au pair here: www.thegotoguy.co.za/au-pair-registration Browse available au pair positions here: www.thegotoguy.co.za/au-pair-required WHY DETAIL MATTERS: REAL SCENARIOS Scenario 1: The school run A family needs their au pair to collect two children from school at 13:30 and drive them to rugby practice at 15:00. They post “looking for an au pair” without mentioning transport. They hire someone who does not have a driver’s licence. The arrangement lasts one week. With the TGTG system, the family’s form clearly states that a driver’s licence and own vehicle are required. Au pairs without transport do not apply. Problem solved before it starts. Scenario 2: Homework help A family has a Grade 7 child who needs daily homework supervision, particularly in mathematics. They hire an au pair who is wonderful with toddlers but has no confidence helping with schoolwork. The child falls behind. With the TGTG system, the family specifies tutoring as a core requirement. Au pairs with tutoring experience and confidence are matched. Both sides know what to expect. Scenario 3: First aid A child has a severe nut allergy. The family mentions this nowhere in their WhatsApp post. The au pair is unaware and does not know how to administer an EpiPen. With the TGTG system, the family describes medical conditions in the job form. The au pair’s profile shows whether they hold a first aid certificate. The family can prioritise candidates with the right training.
