The annual NWU-Berts Bricks AC Night Race is back on Wednesday 1 October 2025. The event, hosted at North-West University’s Potchefstroom Campus, promises an evening run with a bit of sparkle under the night sky. The start and finish point is the campus amphitheatre, with two distances on offer: 10km (starting at 19:00) and 5km (starting at 19:15). Distances, Times and Goodie Bags Runners can choose between a 10km challenge or a 5km fun run. The first 600 entries for the 10km event will bag a goodie bag, which might just be enough motivation to register early. Entry Fees 10km Students and staff: R100 online / R150 on the day Adults (14 years and older): R120 online / R150 on the day 5km Fun Run Students and staff: R30 online / R50 on the day Adults (14 years and older): R50 online / R70 on the day Children under 14: Free Entries are handled online through ProTime, with NSFAS beneficiaries able to access free pre-entries. Race Rules and Regulations The event will be run under the rules of ASA and Athletics Central North West (ACNW). Local Event for Young Riders Potchefstroom’s very own First Pedal is hosting the First Pedal Cup on Saturday, 4 October 2025, at Ferdinand Postma High School. The event is tailored for children aged 2 to 6 years, with the day beginning bright and early at 07:30 for 08:00. About the Cup This home-grown balance bike event is designed to give toddlers the chance to race without pedals or pressure. The focus is on fun, confidence-building, and coordination. Riders will take part in age-appropriate heats, cheered on by parents and supporters, and every participant receives a medal. The idea is simple: create a safe, energetic space where young children can discover the joy of cycling. Or as locals might put it, “start them off on two wheels before they can even reach the biscuit tin on the counter.” Registration and Entry Fee Entries cost R220 per child, and registration closes on 12 September 2025. After enduring six days of relentless tests, culminating in the grueling 20km Endurance Walk  that very morning, competitors, instructors, and dignitaries gathered for the Prize Giving Ceremony . The atmosphere inside the unit’s Mess was alive with celebration. Soldiers stood tall, weary yet radiant with achievement, as medals and trophies were presented to the finest among them. The night became more than a formal close to a competition; it was a tribute to perseverance, discipline, and the spirit of the South African Army. North-West University (NWU) bowed out of the 2025 Varsity Women’s Football tournament after a narrow 2–1 defeat to the University of Pretoria (UP-Tuks) in their playoff encounter. It was a tightly contested match that showcased moments of brilliance, but ultimately Tuks’ sharper finishing made the difference. Despite conceding early, the Eagles regrouped quickly and pushed forward, creating half-chances of their own. The first half remained balanced, with both sides battling hard in midfield. NWU kept Tuks under pressure in short spells but couldn’t find a way through before the interval. At halftime, the hosts still held a slender 1–0 lead. Eagles Fight Back NWU returned from the break with renewed determination, and their persistence was rewarded when Naledi Mooketsi  levelled the score. Her strike gave the Eagles hope of turning the game around, and for a moment, the momentum appeared to be shifting. But just minutes later, Tuks reclaimed control. Held on Friday, 5 September, the initiative formed part of NWU Giving Week , a campaign dedicated to fostering generosity and hope while strengthening the institution’s commitment to student success. Each day carried the central theme of creating pathways for students to overcome financial barriers and pursue their academic goals. The Purple Walk, held mid-week, became the highlight of the initiative by visually demonstrating solidarity: campuses were transformed into seas of purple as participants donned NWU regalia and walked side by side. The event also served as a fundraising platform for the We Care Bursary Fund  and the Student Debt Relief Initiative , which had already achieved 56% of its ambitious R250,000 target by the time of reporting. The project included not only road resurfacing but also rehabilitation of parking areas previously affected by trenching from water and sanitation works. The team also identified and secured a sinking hole during operations, immediately reporting the hazard for specialist intervention. Safety barriers remain in place as materials for permanent repairs are awaited. According to municipal impact metrics, 1.2 kilometers of road were fully restored in this project alone. Water Services: Borehole Installation in Matlwang Village In the rural areas, attention turned to long-term water supply solutions. A borehole was successfully installed in Matlwang Village, marking a step toward sustainable water access. The initiative is presented as part of a broader strategy to reduce reliance on limited municipal water infrastructure. Boiki Tlhapi Clinic:  Mainline unblocked to prevent disruptions to healthcare services. Promosa Stadium:  Blockage cleared to avoid potential sanitation hazards during public events. Sonderwater, Promosa, and Other Areas:  Additional blockages addressed with the assistance of jetting machines and manual teams. In total, seven sewage blockages were reported cleared across different neighbourhoods. Supervisors emphasised that these efforts were directly linked to preventing health risks and ensuring that clinics, homes, and stadiums could function without sanitation interruptions. Yellow Fleet: Clarification Needed The report also noted an accountability concern involving the Yellow Fleet operations in Ward 1, Sarafina. While feedback was received, the information lacked details about dumping sites cleared and streets graded. The municipality stated that precision in reporting is essential for both recognition of work done and accurate tracking of service delivery. Critical Incident: Sink Hole Response The sink hole on Walter Sisulu Street was highlighted as the most urgent incident of the week. While immediate safety precautions were taken, including securing the site and engaging the Water and Sanitation Unit for inspection, permanent repairs remain pending due to material shortages. Parks & Recreation  – Absence of maintenance reports on grass cutting, playground repairs, and sports facilities. Electricity Department  – No confirmation of fault repairs, new connections, or streetlight servicing. Urban Water & Sanitation Teams  – No updates on pipe repairs, meter installations, or sewage maintenance in town areas. The lack of reporting was described as a major gap, as it makes the work of these teams “invisible” to both management and the public.
