- Potchefstroom Weeklikse Wyk-Groep Opsomming – 21 Augustus 2025
#TheGoToGuy #PotchefstroomWykUpdate #Gemeenskapskrag #DiensleweringNuus #OnsKykSaam

- Newly Discovered Parasite Named After NWU Scientist
A newly identified parasite has been officially named Latergator louisdupreezi in honour of Prof Louis du Preez of North-West University. The organism was discovered by researchers in the United States and belongs to a family of ocular parasites that inhabit the eyes of freshwater turtles, hippopotamuses, and alligators. Image: The Go-To Guy Creations Research Background Prof du Preez’s research career has been closely linked to this group of parasites. For decades, studies were conducted on crocodiles and alligators in both Africa and the United States to confirm the existence of the species. Despite extensive examinations, the parasite remained elusive until it was finally located on the eye of an alligator during recent research efforts in the US. Scientific Recognition The naming recognises his long-standing contributions to parasitology and his work on this specific group of organisms. Assigning scientific names to new species as a tribute to researchers is a well-established tradition in taxonomy. Image: NWU - Prof du Preez Previous Honour This is not the first time Prof du Preez has received such recognition. In 2023, a new frog species from Madagascar was named Blommersia dupreezi by German scientists in acknowledgement of his significant work on flatworm parasites of Malagasy amphibians. #TheGoToGuy #potchefstroom #ScienceNews #NWUResearch #Biodiversity #Parasites

The interruption, which affects Flamwood Extensions 18 and 30, is expected to last from 08:00 until 15:00. - StoormCares: Abraham Kriel Children's Home – Potchefstroom
In Potchefstroom, Abraham Kriel Children's Home has long stood as a place of hope, safety, and second chances for vulnerable children. Image : Facebook Abraham Kriel Children's Home Every child who passes through their doors carries a story of resilience and courage, and the Children's Home is there to provide them not only with a home, but with love, guidance, and opportunities for a brighter future. Yet, like so many non-profit organisations, their journey is not without challenges. While their basic needs and day-to-day care are under control, there are two urgent financial hurdles that currently weigh heavily on the shoulders of this remarkable institution. 1. The Battle for Education Education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty and despair. For the young people of Abraham Kriel Kinderhuis, it represents a chance to build independent, meaningful lives. Unfortunately, the very system that should support them, NSFAS, has become an obstacle. Despite endless documentation, appeals, and even court orders, many of the Children's Home's students are still rejected by NSFAS. This leaves their tertiary studies and accommodation costs completely uncovered. The result? The Children's Home is forced to carry this immense financial burden, often running into the hundreds of thousands of rands. Without extra support, the dreams of these young students risk being cut short, not because of their abilities, but because of financial roadblocks. 2. A Boy’s Fight to Hear Again The second urgent challenge is deeply personal. One of the boys at the Children's Home faces a devastating battle with his hearing. After years of chronic ear infections and previous surgeries, his hearing in one ear is already lost. Doctors warn that without immediate surgery, he could soon face total hearing loss. This young boy is not just any child - he’s a passionate, sport-loving youngster who was named Sportsman of the year at his primary school last year. Sadly, he cannot currently participate in the sports he loves, as one hard knock to the head could cost him the last of his hearing. Specialists have agreed to help, but the costs are staggering. Beyond multiple surgeries, he will also require advanced hearing devices, similar to cochlear implants, to restore and protect his ability to hear. For this boy, these procedures are more than medical necessities, they are the chance to live a full life, to hear his friends, to learn in class, and to once again play the sports he loves. Why the Community’s Help is Vital Abraham Kriel Children's Home does not stand alone, it thrives because of the generosity of individuals, families, and businesses who care enough to make a difference. While subsidies cover the basics, these extraordinary expenses, university tuition, accommodation, and life-changing medical procedures, can only be met through additional fundraising and donations. In their own words: “Ons is finansieël oraait met basiese behoeftes en versorging, maar ons het ander enorme finansiële verantwoordelikhede wat soos ’n berg voor ons lê.” It is in times like these that a community shows its true heart. Potchefstroom has always been a town where people step up, and together, we can help Abraham Kriel Children's Home climb this mountain. How You Can Get Involved Every contribution, no matter how small, brings hope: Financial Donations – Direct support towards tuition fees, accommodation, and medical bills. Partnerships with Businesses – Sponsorships, fundraising events, or services-in-kind. Awareness – Share their story, tell others, and spread the word so help can reach where it’s most needed. By standing with Abraham Kriel Children's Home, you are not just giving money, you are investing in futures, restoring dignity, and proving to these children that they are not forgotten. Closing Words At StoormCares, we believe that the measure of a community lies in how it uplifts its most vulnerable members. Abraham Kriel Children's Home has dedicated itself to giving children the foundation they deserve, but today, they need us to step forward. Whether it’s helping a young student achieve a degree, or giving a boy the gift of hearing again, every act of kindness ripples outward to change lives. Together, we can turn these challenges into victories. 💙 StoormCares – because it takes a village to raise a child. But if you’d rather not fly to New York to catch them, Potchefstroom in September might just be the easier option. Image: Facebook - Snowflake Potchefstroom
- JP Dix: From the Streets to the Spotlight at Potch Geesfees
Potchefstroom’s Geesfees stage will soon welcome a performance steeped in raw emotion, redemption, and triumph: JP Dix, whose latest release, "Man op die Pad", marks a triumphant return from the darkest chapters of his life and a celebration of survival, hope, and transformation. Image : Potch Geesfees A Song Born from Hardship "Man op die Pad," released on 4 August 2025, stands as much more than a single, it is JP Dix’s survival story set to melody. Credited to Jacques Pienaar as composer and lyricist, with acoustic guitar performance and co-production by Albert Bredenhann, the song resonates with unfiltered authenticity. This deeply personal track arrives after a period of profound struggle. JP Dix openly reflects on his descent into alcohol dependency, losing everything, ending up homeless on Centurion’s streets; his guitar as his only companion, mostly playing for no one. It was within that darkness that "Man op die Pad" began to take shape, not as structured lyrics, but as raw feeling. His road to recovery began on 1 October 2024, when a friend stepped in, guiding him to rehab. There, in six difficult yet pivotal months, he found healing and the inspiration for his comeback song. A Journey of Redemption Through Song JP Dix’s story is not only personal, but universal in its emotional power. "Man op die Pad" encapsulates losing it all and daring to rebuild and not just survive, but thrive. In his own words, it’s "my oorlewingslied",a testament for anyone who ever believed they’d fallen too far to rise again. His transformation from street survivor to stage storyteller positions him as one of Geesfees’s most compelling and genuine acts. Artistic Identity & Musical Style From various music platforms, we see a talented artist whose repertoire is grounded in authentic, heart-reaching storytelling. Alongside "Man op die Pad," tracks like "Hallelujah" have found traction, with fans adding JP Dix to playlists alongside comparable artists in the acoustic and country genres. He also plays with The Dixie Rockers , a dynamic trio thriving on high-energy rock, covering classics from Dire Straits to Prince, and beyond. Their blend of rockabilly, pop, blues, and old-school grooves showcases JP Dix’s versatility. A Homecoming Moment at Geesfees JP Dix's set at Potch Geesfees promises to be more than a performance, it’s a homecoming. Expect a powerful fusion of stripped-down acoustic intimacy and the engaging swagger of a seasoned performer. Whether delivering the raw poignancy of "Man op die Pad" or switching gears into his rockier flair with The Dixie Rockers, he brings authenticity, emotion, and stage charisma rooted in lived experience. Final Note JP Dix’s return to the stage is nothing short of inspiring. From battling homelessness to releasing his survival anthem just weeks ago, his Geesfees performance encapsulates the festival’s spirit: local, heartfelt, and resilient. Don't miss the chance to witness an artist reclaimed by music ,walking confidently from street to spotlight. Buy Your Tickets Here

- Modified Hockey Launch Kicks Off in North West Province
The South African Hockey Association (SAHA), in collaboration with North West Hockey and Promosa High School, has launched a groundbreaking Modified Hockey programme in the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District. The two-day event, which began yesterday and concludes today, marks a major step in promoting grassroots hockey development in schools. Day One: Teacher Training and Coaching Development On Wednesday, 20 August 2025, Promosa High hosted the first sessions of the launch. Physical education teachers attended a technical skills workshop facilitated by Gary Dolley, where they explored how to integrate modified hockey into physical education through adapted games. In the afternoon, a Level 0 Coaching Course was conducted for 25 identified teachers from Promosa, Ikageng, and Klerksdorp. The initiative also included training for two additional facilitators who will help roll out the programme across other districts. This first day laid a strong foundation for equipping educators with the skills to deliver hockey at the school level. Day Two: School Visits and Equipment Handover Today, Thursday, 21 August 2025, the focus shifted to learners and schools. The programme started with a site visit to Keagile Primary, where a modified hockey session was demonstrated. Importantly, 10 schools received equipment as part of SAHA’s commitment to expanding access to the sport. Building the Future of Hockey The Modified Hockey initiative is designed to make the sport more accessible and inclusive, ensuring that children from diverse backgrounds can participate. By training teachers and supplying schools with equipment, SAHA aims to create sustainable pathways for hockey development from grassroots to competitive levels. Project Manager Gary Dolley emphasised the importance of investing in schools and teachers to grow the sport. The programme is expected to expand further into other districts in the near future, building a stronger base for South African hockey.
- Biltongfees 'n groot sukses
Ons maak volgende jaar weer so. *’n Indiepte artikel volg _________________________________ Johané van Dyk - Potchefstroom

- Historic First Electricity Switch-On Brings Power to Khutsong South Extensions 5
In a landmark moment for Merafong City Local Municipality, electricity has been officially switched on for the first time in Khutsong South Extensions 5 , marking the beginning of a new chapter for residents in the area. A Milestone for Service Delivery The historic switch-on was led by Executive Mayor Cllr. Nozilo Best, joined by the MMC for Electricity, Water & Gas, Cllr. Luvo Mgani, Ward Councillor Cllr. Ernest Tibane, Municipal Manager Mr. Mabuza, and Executive Director for Energy Mr. Gubevu. Together, they presided over the activation of electricity in the newly built section of the city, a development welcomed with great enthusiasm by the local community. The municipality described the occasion as a breakthrough that will significantly improve quality of life, enable economic opportunities, and contribute to safer, better-connected neighbourhoods. Safety Precautions for Residents Because this is a first-time electricity supply, officials urged households to practice caution. Residents were advised to keep heavy appliances such as stoves, geysers, and heaters switched off during the initial power-on process. The guidance emphasized switching on appliances gradually, one at a time, to allow the system to stabilise. The municipality also reminded residents to stay clear of electrical infrastructure for their own safety and to promptly report any faults to the official municipal emergency lines. Partnership and Progress Municipal leaders attributed the milestone to collective efforts between government, technical teams, and community stakeholders. They thanked the people of Khutsong for their patience and cooperation throughout the development phase. Looking Ahead The first switch-on at Khutsong South Extensions 5 represents more than just lights turning on, it is a signal of progress, resilience, and hope. For residents, it brings the promise of improved living conditions and new possibilities for economic participation. For the municipality, it underscores a commitment to infrastructure expansion and community development. #TheGoToGuy #carletonville #merafongcity #servicedelivery
