  • Update: Matlosana Municipal Notices for 16–17 July 2025

As part of its ongoing commitment to service delivery and community communication, the City of Matlosana has issued several important public notices for 16 and 17 July 2025. These updates include maintenance alerts, service interruptions, public health preparations, and community reminders aimed at keeping residents informed and safe. Image: City of Matsolana Municipal Preparation for the Transnet Phelophepha Primary Health Care Train The Department of Community Services in the City of Matlosana is currently undertaking preparations for the upcoming visit of the Phelophepha Primary Health Care Train. As part of these preparations, the department is cutting down trees and removing objects to ensure clear visibility and a safe environment for visitors. The City of Matlosana is pleased to announce that the visit of the Transnet Phelophepha Primary Health Care Train 1 to Klerksdorp Station has been extended to three weeks. The new dates for the visit are as follows: 21–25 July 2025 28 July–1 August 2025 4–8 August 2025 (Monday to Friday, 7:30–16:00) We kindly ask the community and casual workers to take note of these new dates. Your cooperation and understanding are greatly appreciated. Proper Disposal of Sanitary Products The City of Matlosana’s Sewer Section has issued a serious reminder to residents regarding the responsible disposal of sanitary and hygiene-related waste. This follows a distressing incident during a recent sewer blockage repair, where municipal workers discovered a fetus lodged in the system. The finding has triggered renewed calls for public awareness and community cooperation. The Danger of Improper Disposal The incident has highlighted the ongoing issue of residents discarding non-biodegradable and inappropriate items in toilets, including sanitary towels, nappies, wipes, and other hygiene products. These materials do not dissolve and can accumulate in the pipes, resulting in severe blockages, costly damage to the infrastructure, and environmental hazards. Municipal officials warn that continued misuse of the sewer system could lead to frequent overflows, property damage, and increased maintenance costs for the city. More importantly, improper disposal can create hazardous working conditions for sewer teams and contribute to serious public health risks. A Call for Responsible Behavior Residents are strongly urged to place all sanitary and hygiene items in waste bins rather than flushing them down the toilet. This simple action can significantly reduce the frequency of blockages and improve the overall health and efficiency of the city’s sanitation network. The City’s sewer maintenance teams are committed to ensuring a safe and functional wastewater system, but they cannot do it alone. Community participation is vital. The municipality is therefore appealing to residents to report illegal or irresponsible dumping and to spread awareness about proper toilet use, especially in shared facilities. Community Partnership for Cleaner Infrastructure This reminder is part of an ongoing campaign by the City of Matlosana to promote responsible sanitation practices and preserve the longevity of critical infrastructure. Educational outreach programs are being considered for schools and community groups to reinforce these messages and reduce the burden on municipal services. Maintaining a clean and functional sewer system is a shared responsibility. Every resident plays a part in protecting the environment and public health. Let’s work together to ensure that our infrastructure remains safe, efficient, and resilient. For more information or to report sewer-related issues, residents may contact the City of Matlosana’s Infrastructure Services Department. Power Outage Notice: Manzilpark, Old Alabama & New Alabama Residents of Manzilpark, Old Alabama, and New Alabama are advised of a power outage had taken place on Wednesday, 16 July 2025  due to a fault causing low voltage. Municipal teams switched off some of the lines to locate and repair the main fault. Date:  16 July 2025 Time:  Whole day Areas Affected:  Manzilpark, Old Alabama, New Alabama Water Supply Interruption: Khuma The municipality will carry out urgent repairs on a main water line affecting parts of Khuma. • Saddlebrook Retirement Estate: A Comprehensive Look at Potchefstroom’s Modern Old Age Home

Saddlebrook Retirement Estate in Potchefstroom represents a new generation of elder care facilities that combine independent living with full-spectrum medical support. Opened in 2019 , this estate (often informally referred to as an "old age home") offers more than just a place to stay, it provides a community, healthcare services, and amenities aimed at ensuring seniors live safely and with dignity. In this deep dive, we explore Saddlebrook’s residential options, medical services, amenities, staff qualifications, and how the facility has evolved into 2025. The goal is to present a neutral, factual overview of what Saddlebrook Estate offers to its residents and what sets it apart in the elder care landscape. Image: Saddlebrook Care Centre Background and Overview Saddlebrook Retirement Estate is located at Hoewe (Plot) 87 in Vyfhoek , a tranquil area on the outskirts of Potchefstroom thegotoguy.co.za . Established in 2017  and opening its doors to residents in May 2019 , it is one of the newest entrants in Potchefstroom’s retirement scene . The estate was envisioned as a comprehensive senior living community with a continuum-of-care approach. This means that a resident can move in while still active and independent, and as their care needs increase over time, the necessary support is available on-site, effectively making “one move for life”  possible. Designed with a focus on comfort and specialized care, Saddlebrook combines the concept of a retirement village (where seniors live independently) with that of a care facility (where intensive medical and daily living support is provided). It is a private retirement estate  geared towards high-quality services, a contrast to traditional non-profit old age homes in the area and features amenities and healthcare similar to those found in luxury senior communities. Importantly, while Saddlebrook offers top-notch facilities, it strives to maintain a neutral, homely atmosphere  rather than a hospital feel. The environment is described as a “tranquil, farm-like setting”  with gardens and even small wildlife on the grounds , providing a peaceful backdrop for residents’ daily lives. From an operational standpoint, Saddlebrook Estate is fully licensed and fully operational as of 2023 , including a specialized care center that focuses on memory-related conditions citizen.co.za . Initially starting with a limited number of units, the development has been expanding in phases. Today, the estate consists of multiple phases of housing and care facilities (the first phase being independent houses) and can accommodate dozens of independent residents along with up to 38 frail-care patients  in its clinic at any given time . This capped capacity in the care center is intentional to keep care personal and intimate , ensuring each resident gets ample attention citizen.co.za . Overall, Saddlebrook’s model reflects a modern approach to elder care: aging in place  within a community that can meet a senior’s evolving needs, all in one location. Image: Saddlebrook Care Centre Residential Living Options One of Saddlebrook’s key features is its variety of residential accommodations designed for seniors’ comfort and independence. The estate offers two main types of living arrangements for residents who are still relatively independent: Lifestyle Homes:   These are standalone houses within the estate, intended for independent living. The homes are pet-friendly and cater to seniors who can live on their own but want to be in a retirement-oriented community Each house is designed with senior-friendly features (such as single-story layouts and safety considerations) while still feeling like a normal home. Residents in these homes enjoy privacy and autonomy; they maintain their own household but with the reassurance that help is nearby if needed. The estate’s development plan includes multiple phases of such houses, for example, Phase 1 included a three-bedroom house model, indicating that larger home options are available for couples or those wanting extra space. Being part of Saddlebrook means these homeowners can easily transition to more supported living later without leaving the community. Retirement Apartments:   In addition to houses, Saddlebrook has modern apartments for seniors. These include bachelor units, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom apartments , all located conveniently close to the on-site Care Centre . The apartments offer a more compact, maintenance-free lifestyle for those who prefer it or who may need a bit of help day-to-day. Living near the Care Centre means residents have quick access to medical staff and support services if required, which is ideal for individuals who might have mild health issues or mobility limitations. The apartments are designed with accessibility in mind (elevators, handrails, emergency call systems, etc.) and are integrated into the community’s daily life. Apartment residents can also take advantage of communal services like dining, cleaning, and laundry services if they choose, making independent living easier as they age. Both the houses and apartments are set within a secure, gated environment, typical of private estates. While specific security features are not publicly detailed, one can expect controlled access, 24-hour security presence, and emergency call systems, ensuring residents feel safe. The neighborhood atmosphere  is a selling point, neighbors are peers of a similar age group, and social activities are organized to foster a sense of community. In essence, the residential options at Saddlebrook allow seniors to “right-size”  their living situation: from a larger home with a garden (and even pets) to a convenient apartment, all within the same village. This flexibility is part of what makes Saddlebrook a compelling choice for retirement living in Potchefstroom. Image: Saddlebrook Care Centre Comprehensive Care and Medical Services At the heart of Saddlebrook Estate is its on-site Care Centre , which differentiates it from a standard retirement village. The Care Centre is a modern facility that provides a spectrum of healthcare and assistance services to residents. What sets Saddlebrook apart is that this range spans from basic assisted living support to full frail care and even rehabilitative services, all under one roof .  Residents and even short-term patients (if admitted for recovery) have access to professional care without leaving the estate. Key services include: Assisted Living:   For residents who are mostly independent but may need help with certain daily tasks (such as medication management, bathing, or mobility), the Care Centre offers assisted living services. This might involve caregivers checking in on residents in their apartments or providing scheduled assistance. It serves as an intermediate step before full-time care is needed, allowing seniors to retain independence while getting help in areas they struggle with. Frail Care:   Saddlebrook provides dedicated frail care for the elderly who can no longer fully care for themselves due to physical frailty or chronic illness. The frail care unit operates 24/7 with nursing staff on duty  and is equipped to handle all activities of daily living for residents who need hands-on care . This includes assistance with dressing, feeding, hygiene, mobility, and medical care such as wound care or injections. The facility has a limited number of frail care beds (up to 38 residents in total can be accommodated in the care facility) to ensure each individual receives thorough attention By keeping the numbers relatively low, the staff-to-patient ratio remains high, making the care personalized and attentive. Sub-Acute Rehabilitation:   A standout offering at Saddlebrook is its sub-acute rehab services . This is essentially a step-down care service for patients recovering from surgeries, hospital stays, or illnesses. Instead of recuperating alone at home or in a general hospital ward, seniors (and even non-seniors, if they choose) can recover in the estate’s Care Centre where they receive nursing care, physiotherapy, and occupational therapy as needed. The presence of therapists and nurses means post-operative patients or those recovering from strokes, fractures, etc., get professional rehabilitation support on-site. This service is not common in all retirement facilities and positions Saddlebrook as somewhat of a hybrid between a retirement home and a convalescent rehab center. Notably, many medical aid plans cover sub-acute rehab , and Saddlebrook accepts a wide range of medical insurance plans to help fund this care . Memory Care (Alzheimer’s and Dementia):   Saddlebrook Estate has developed a dedicated Alzheimer’s and dementia care program  to serve residents with cognitive impairments This is a specialized unit within the Care Centre focusing on dementia and related conditions such as Parkinson’s disease-related dementia. The program is designed to provide a safe, structured, and nurturing environment  for those with memory loss conditions The facility is secured in a way that patients can move about freely in designated safe areas, including outdoor garden paths, without the risk of getting lost or injured . The care team uses personalized techniques, from memory exercises and calming routines to modified activities, all tailored to each resident’s abilities . By focusing on the “four different types of dementia”  and their unique challenges, the staff aims to engage patients meaningfully and reduce confusion or distress . This specialization has become fully operational by late 2023, indicating that Saddlebrook has ramped up its capacity and expertise in memory care for the community . The medical services at Saddlebrook are round-the-clock . A team of qualified nurses  and caregivers is on duty 24/7 to respond to emergencies or routine needs . The Care Centre is equipped like a small clinic, handling everything from routine health monitoring (blood pressure checks, medication administration) to urgent first aid and coordinating with doctors or hospitals if advanced care is needed. While doctors (such as geriatric specialists or general practitioners) likely visit on schedule or on call, the estate ensures that at any given time, trained healthcare personnel are present on-site. For the residents, this means peace of mind, help is always just a call button away. In summary, Saddlebrook’s medical and care services are comprehensive: the estate not only provides a home for life , but also the care required for each stage of aging, all in familiar surroundings . Image: Saddlebrook Care Centre Staff Qualifications and Caregiver Ratio   Trained staff at Saddlebrook Estate provide attentive care to residents in the on-site frail care clinic. The quality of care at any elder care facility depends heavily on its staff. At Saddlebrook Estate, the staffing model is built to ensure expertise, compassion, and sufficient numbers. The care team  includes registered nurses, nursing assistants, caregivers, and therapists  (such as physiotherapists or occupational therapists) who work together to support the residents . All nursing staff are formally qualified and registered to practice, and caregivers typically have certifications in elder care or frail care. Moreover, those assigned to the specialized dementia program undergo additional training in memory care  techniques. This specialized training equips them to handle the unique behaviors and needs associated with Alzheimer’s and other dementias, for example, how to communicate with someone with memory loss, how to manage aggression or confusion compassionately, and how to engage residents in activities that stimulate cognition. A crucial aspect of Saddlebrook’s care is its low patient-to-caregiver ratio . In the frail care and dementia unit, the estate maintains approximately one caregiver for every four patients . This 1:4 ratio is notably better than what is found in many standard old age homes, and it allows for very personalized attention. For residents, this means that at any given moment, a caregiver is readily available to assist with needs, whether it’s help getting to the bathroom, someone to chat with, or immediate response if a resident is in distress. The nursing staff-to-patient ratio is also kept low (though exact numbers aren’t published) to ensure that medical needs are promptly addressed. In practice, a low ratio translates to caregivers having the time to sit with a resident and truly care , they can take the time to feed someone unhurriedly, notice subtle health changes, or simply provide companionship. This aligns with Saddlebrook’s philosophy of intimate, family-like care . Staff qualifications  at Saddlebrook include not just formal degrees or certificates, but also soft skills and ethos. The hiring emphasizes compassion, patience, and understanding of elderly people’s dignity. According to statements from the estate, the staff “strives to help patients keep their dignity until the end” citizen.co.za . This ethos is reinforced through ongoing training and a culture of respect. Caregivers and nurses are trained to handle sensitive tasks (like bathing or feeding) in ways that respect the resident’s privacy and preferences. The staff also works closely with families, keeping them informed and involved in care plans, which requires good communication skills and empathy. Another aspect of the staff competence is the multidisciplinary approach . For example, when a resident is in the sub-acute rehab program, the nurse, physiotherapist, and caregiver coordinate on that resident’s recovery goals. If a resident has dementia, the caregivers, occupational therapist (for cognitive activities), and even auxiliary staff (like activity coordinators) collaborate to provide a consistent, supportive routine. This team approach ensures that all facets of a resident’s well-being are covered. And underpinning all of this is the availability of staff at all times: 24/7 support  means shifts are arranged such that even during the night, enough staff are present to attend to emergencies or check on frail residents regularly . In summary, Saddlebrook’s staff are not only well-qualified on paper, but they are also trained in specialized elder care areas and supported by a staffing plan that puts resident care first. Image: Saddlebrook Care Centre Amenities and Facilities for Residents Beyond healthcare, Saddlebrook Estate offers a range of amenities to make daily life comfortable and enjoyable for its senior residents. The idea is to provide most necessities on-site, so that residents do not have to travel far for services, and to create a stimulating environment that combats the isolation often associated with old age. Key amenities and facilities include: Nutritious Dining:   Residents at Saddlebrook enjoy chef-prepared meals  served daily . A dietitian plans these menus, ensuring that the food is not only tasty but also meets the nutritional needs of older adults (e.g. low sodium options, diabetic-friendly desserts, soft diet for those who need it). There is likely a dining hall or restaurant-style area where residents can take their meals and socialize. For those in the care center or who are bed-bound, meals are delivered to their rooms with assistance from staff. Good nutrition is a priority, as it’s vital for maintaining health in old age, and the estate’s approach of having professional meal planning reflects a commitment to residents’ well-being . On-Site Hair Salon and Beauty Services:   Personal grooming remains important for dignity and self-esteem. Saddlebrook has its own hair salon (hairdresser)  on the premises . Residents (both ladies and gentlemen) can get regular haircuts, styling, or shaves without leaving the estate. The advertorial notes that this helps keep the ladies looking beautiful at all times , but of course the service is equally available to men. Having a salon in-house means residents don’t have to worry about transportation to town for grooming, and it provides a social little outing right at home. Other beauty services, like manicures or basic spa treatments, might also be offered periodically as part of wellness days. Library and Reading Rooms:   A small library  is available for residents who enjoy reading . Whether it’s a dedicated library room or just a reading corner, the estate provides books (and likely puzzles, board games, etc.) to keep the mind engaged. Reading material could range from novels and magazines to large-print books suitable for seniors. This quiet space encourages lifelong learning and leisure, giving residents a retreat to delve into a good book or newspaper. Gardens and Outdoor Spaces:   The estate is known for its picturesque pathways and gardens , which surround the living units . Because it’s located in a semi-rural part of Potchefstroom, the outdoor environment has a “real-nature feeling”  with greenery and possibly visiting birds or small wildlife . Residents can take leisurely walks on safe, paved paths that wind through the property. Benches and gazebos are likely placed around for rest and enjoyment of fresh air. These outdoor spaces are especially beneficial for dementia patients, as they provide a calming sensory experience and a sense of freedom (they can wander within a secure perimeter). The gardens are also used for activities like morning exercise groups, gardening clubs, or simply sitting outside on a sunny day. Activity and Social Spaces:   While not explicitly listed in the sources, most retirement estates have communal lounges, activity rooms, or a small hall. At Saddlebrook, organized activities  are a part of life, especially with the focus on community and engagement. There are likely spaces for crafts, exercise classes, or movie nights. According to the estate’s information, engaging activities tailored to individual needs  are offered, particularly in the memory care program . This implies activities like music therapy, art sessions, puzzles, or reminiscence therapy for those with dementia, and perhaps game nights, fitness classes, or religious services for the general resident population. The emphasis is on keeping residents active and socially involved to enhance their quality of life. Transportation and Accessibility:   Being somewhat outside the city center, Saddlebrook might offer shuttle services for residents’ errands (e.g. scheduled trips to Potchefstroom town for shopping or medical appointments). Though not explicitly stated, many estates provide this amenity. All facilities within Saddlebrook are designed to be wheelchair accessible, with ramps and elevators where needed, making it easy for those with mobility aids to get around. Eco-Friendly Infrastructure:   A unique feature of Saddlebrook Estate is its commitment to sustainable infrastructure . The facility runs largely on solar power with inverter backups , which significantly reduces the impact of South Africa’s load-shedding (rolling electricity blackouts) on the residents . This means that even when the municipal power is down, the lights stay on and critical equipment (like oxygen machines or the nurse-call system) remain functional. For the residents, this is a huge benefit, they don’t have to worry about being stuck in the dark or an elevator during power cuts, and the care centre can operate normally. The eco-friendly setup not only provides reliability but also demonstrates a forward-thinking approach to operations, which could reduce costs in the long term and is environmentally responsible. In terms of physical facilities, Saddlebrook likely has all the necessary support infrastructure: a laundry service  (so residents’ linens and clothes are regularly washed), housekeeping services for those who need help cleaning their living spaces, and administrative offices to handle billing and queries. There may also be a small chapel or multi-faith prayer room, given the importance of spiritual life for many seniors, and visiting clergy or counselors for emotional support. Additionally, community involvement  is encouraged – the estate might organize events where local volunteers or family members join for celebrations (the image text mentioned “community involvement” 【22†source】, suggesting the home engages with the broader community, perhaps through charity events or inviting schools/churches to visit). All these amenities and facilities aim to create a self-contained community where seniors have everything they need at their fingertips, reducing stress and improving their overall quality of life. Image: Saddlebrook Care Centre Community and Care Philosophy While buildings and services are important, what truly defines Saddlebrook is its ethos of care and community. The estate fosters a family-like atmosphere . Residents are not just tenants or patients; they are part of a community. In fact, the management notes that “patients become part of the Saddlebrook family” , and even other independent residents help those in the care center feel included in the community . This could mean that healthier residents volunteer or simply spend time with those who are frail, or it could be as simple as everyone mingling at social events irrespective of their health status. The barrier between “frail care patient” and “independent living resident” is intentionally low, all are considered members of the same community, respecting each person’s dignity and value. Dignity in care  is a recurring principle at Saddlebrook. The facility explicitly strives to help residents “keep their dignity until the end.”  This philosophy influences how staff interact with residents: with respect, patience, and empathy. For example, caregivers likely knock before entering rooms, address residents by their preferred names (not just “granny” or “patient”), and involve them in decisions about their own care as much as possible. Small touches like allowing residents to wear their own clothing (instead of hospital gowns) or encouraging them to continue hobbies (with assistance if needed) go a long way in preserving a sense of self. In the dementia unit, maintaining dignity might involve using validation techniques (agreeing with or gently redirecting a confused resident rather than scolding them) and celebrating small moments of joy with them. Staff training includes understanding the “unique challenges and complexities of Alzheimer’s and dementia” , essentially seeing the person, not just the disease. This person-centered care philosophy means each resident’s history, preferences, and personality are taken into account in their daily routine and care plan. The community aspect  also extends to families. Although the estate provides comprehensive care, family members are encouraged to remain involved in their loved ones’ lives. They can visit freely, join in events, or accompany them to outings. By creating a welcoming atmosphere for family and friends, Saddlebrook ensures residents maintain those critical external relationships. Moreover, being a relatively small community (especially in the frail care section), families often get to know the staff and other residents, creating a supportive network. Saddlebrook’s integration with the broader Potchefstroom community is another facet of its philosophy. The mention of community involvement  suggests that the estate doesn’t operate in isolation. It may partner with local organizations for activities, for example, inviting local school choirs to perform for the residents, or participating in charity drives for elder care awareness. Such interactions keep residents connected to society and combat the loneliness that can come with aging. Finally, the estate’s approach is to balance care and comfort . Medical care is given, but it doesn’t dominate the atmosphere. A visitor to Saddlebrook would likely see a place that looks more like a village or upscale lodge than a nursing home, with seniors walking about, some in wheelchairs chatting in the sun, staff members greeting residents by name, and a general sense of normalcy. By all accounts, the aim is to have residents live their “golden years with confidence” in a supportive, caring environment saddlebrookpotch.co.za . In an aging society, such comprehensive old age home facilities provide not just care, but also a community where seniors can continue to live life to the fullest extent possible, knowing help is always at hand. #TheGoToGuy #potchefstroom #potchgaette #stroomstories #eldercare

  • North-West University Launches Ground-Breaking Forensic Unit to Safeguard Vulnerable Children

A quiet lecture theatre at North-West University (NWU) erupted in applause this week as academics, social-service practitioners and justice officials celebrated the opening of the university’s new Family & Child Forensic Unit (FCFU) . Housed within the Centre for Health & Human Performance’s Care2Kids division, the multidisciplinary hub is being hailed as South Africa’s first university-based service that combines court-ready forensic assessments with trauma-informed therapy for children at risk. Spearheaded by renowned forensic social worker Prof Cornelia Wessels , the unit aims to close a widening protection gap exposed by rising referrals of abuse and high-conflict divorces to social-service authorities. Image: The Go-To Guy Creations A Child-Centred Response to Rising Abuse South Africa’s child-protection statistics paint a stark backdrop. A Statistics SA Mbalo Brief  released in June reports that one in three girls and one in five boys experience violence before turning 18, while the Department of Social Development logged more than 26 000 cases of abuse and neglect in the 2024/25 financial year . Statistics South Africa SAnews     President Cyril Ramaphosa has repeatedly called gender-based violence and violence against children the nation’s “second pandemic”, urging an accelerated, multisector response. Against this landscape, NWU’s initiative sets out to ensure that children’s voices are heard in both therapeutic and legal arenas, preventing further trauma during investigations and court proceedings. Inside the Family & Child Forensic Unit The FCFU brings together social workers, psychologists, speech-language therapists, occupational therapists and legal scholars  under one roof. Their mandate is broad yet sharply defined: deliver evidence-based forensic assessments  that courts can rely on, then guide families through the healing process once the gavel falls. The Guardian Prof Wessels notes that the foundation for the unit was laid when NWU became the first South African university to offer a master’s degree in forensic practice for social workers back in 2018. “We have trained professionals for years; now we’re giving them a single, child-friendly space in which to collaborate,” she said at the launch . The Citizen Bridging Therapy and Justice Unlike many hospital-based child-protection units that focus solely on clinical care, the FCFU’s primary client is the court itself . Caseworkers compile detailed, multidisciplinary reports that answer legal questions about a child’s best interests, competency or trauma impact. Should a matter proceed to trial, expert witnesses from the unit testify to the methodology and findings, boosting the evidentiary weight of children’s statements. SowetanLIVE The same team then pivots to long-term therapy, mediation and co-parenting support , particularly vital in high-conflict divorces or where neurodiverse children (for example, those on the autism spectrum) struggle with abrupt household changes. “There is life after divorce and abuse,” psychologist Dr Michelle Bach  told attendees, emphasising that early, child-friendly interventions can “rewrite relationship blueprints” for survivors. Training the Next Generation Beyond direct service delivery, the unit doubles as a living classroom . Social-work and psychology students observe assessments from a discreet adjacent room, later de-briefing with supervisors on best practice and vicarious trauma. Post-graduate researchers will evaluate the efficacy of combined forensic-therapy models, while a growing library of anonymised case material will feed into national curricula on child forensic interviewing. Prof Wessels believes this pipeline approach is vital. Image : NWU - North-West University Why Care2Kids Matters Locating the unit within Care2Kids , NWU’s neuro-development division, provides additional depth. Founded to translate cutting-edge neuroscience into practical interventions, Care2Kids already offers diagnostics, parent coaching and early-childhood programmes across North West Province. Its philosophy of “Touch, Talk, Think and Play to Thrive” dovetails with trauma-informed care: secure relationships and stimulating environments help build resilience in maltreated children. health-sciences.nwu.ac.za Broader Context: A National Crisis Government’s own Child Protection Month  campaign, launched in May, warns that sexual abuse remains the dominant form of maltreatment, with nearly 10 000 cases recorded nationwide last year. Deliberate neglect and physical abuse follow closely. Minister Sisisi Tolashe  has called for community-level partnerships to turn the tide, highlighting parenting-support programmes and psycho-social services as critical pillars. SAnews NWU’s model directly supports that call by integrating research, service and public education . Monthly workshops will be open to provincial magistrates, prosecutors and social-service teams, while free webinars will equip teachers to recognise and report abuse earlier. Final thought South Africa’s fight against child abuse will not be won in courtrooms alone, but NWU’s Family & Child Forensic Unit shows how science, compassion and legal rigor can co-exist under one roof . By pairing gold-standard assessments with supportive therapy and embedding the programme in a research-rich environment, NWU offers a replicable blueprint for provinces across the country. As Dr Bach reminded launch-day guests, “If the damage is identified early and worked through, children can and do, go on to build healthy, fulfilling lives.” With over 26 000 abuse cases still being logged each year, the urgency could not be clearer. #TheGoToGy #potchefstroom #potchgazette #stroomstories #NWU #protectourchildren

  • Purple Carrot Chef School Launches No-Nonsense 7-Day Food Safety & Catering Course in Potch - 28 July

If you've ever worked in a kitchen, you’ll know it’s more than just chopping onions and dodging flying hot pans. There's the less glamorous but critical stuff too, like food hygiene, allergen awareness, and handling your ingredients without turning your customers into a science experiment. That’s where Purple Carrot Chef School steps in, serving up a solid 7-day course for food pros who want to get it right. What's Cooking? From 28 July to 5 August, the Purple Carrot Chef School in Potchefstroom is hosting a 7-Day Food Safety & Catering Course designed to give kitchen and hospitality staff the know-how they need to meet international standards. It’s not just another box-ticking exercise. Whether you’re running a food truck, a restaurant, or a full-on catering company, trained and certified staff aren’t just nice to have, they’re essential. This course doesn’t fluff around. Expect to learn about food hygiene, allergens, and safe food handling. The kind of training that keeps your health inspector smiling and your customers coming back. Why Bother? Because kitchens are war zones. One slip-up with cross-contamination, one dodgy fridge temp, or one poorly-labelled nut-based sauce, and suddenly you're the headline act on someone’s food blog, under “never eating here again.” This course is about more than just ticking off legal requirements. It’s about keeping your business safe, your staff sharp, and your customers out of A&E. And yes, there’s an internationally recognised certificate at the end of it, which means it’s worth more than the one your cousin printed from that free online quiz. Booking the Spot Limited spaces, so if your kitchen staff still think “allergens” are a band, it’s probably time to sign them up. Here’s how: Call or WhatsApp: 082 556 0779 Email: thea@purplecarrot.co.za The venue? C/O Walter Sisulu and Retief Street, Potchefstroom. No course prices listed, so your best bet is to contact Thea and ask her nicely. Purple Carrot Chef School isn’t messing around. This is serious food safety training, minus the boring PowerPoints and stale muffins. If you’ve got a team that needs a boost, or a kitchen that could do with fewer “oops” moments, this might just be the smartest seven days you spend this year. Aprons on.
