  • Midwest Model Club First Event Of The Year: A Fly-In With a Twist - 24 May

Potchefstroom Gets Airborne The Midwest Model Club is dusting off the runways and lining up the aircraft for their first fly-in of the year, set to take place on 24 May 2025 at their usual airfield just outside Potchefstroom. It kicks off at 8h00 sharp, so best bring your flask and sunscreen. Bring a Plane, Pay a Fee. Watch for Free Whether you’re a seasoned RC pilot or just someone who enjoys watching other people’s toys fly better than your car drives, this event has you covered. Pilots pay R100, but spectators can roll in for free – which is a pretty sweet deal if you’re just there for the vibes, the flight banter, or maybe the food. Fly What You’ve Got The club welcomes all model aircraft – from planes and helicopters to drones. If it flies and doesn’t scare the cows, chances are it’s welcome. This is also a good time to mention they’re rolling out a brand-new flight training programme, perfect for those wanting to stop crashing in style and start landing on purpose. Not Just Hot Air If the whirr of electric motors and scent of burnt nitro fuel isn’t quite enough to keep you going, a food cart will be available on site – ready to serve up something to keep your hands busy when your plane’s on the ground. Whether it's coffee, wors rolls or something else entirely, your stomach won’t leave disappointed. How to Get in Touch For more info or just to talk planes, you can reach the club organisers in every way short of smoke signals: Facebook:  Midwest Model Club Phone/WhatsApp: 079-898-1333 Events like this might not make national headlines, but they do something better – they bring the community together, spark new hobbies, and give people a reason to be outside on a Saturday morning. Whether you’re flying, learning, spectating or just there for a boerie and a chat, the Midwest Model Club’s fly-in promises to keep it grounded, but fun.

  • Die Wilge High School Swings Into Action With 2025 Golf Day - 9 May

If you’re a fan of fairways, or just looking for a decent excuse to knock off early on a Friday, Die Wilge High School’s upcoming Golf Day might be just what the doctor (or principal) ordered. Mark your calendar: Friday, 9 May 2025. It’s all happening at the Potchefstroom Country Club, with a shotgun start at 10:30am, so there’s plenty of time to stretch, swing and sneak in a breakfast roll before tee-off. This year’s format? Better Ball, which means you can carry your partner (or get carried) without too much judgement. Whether you're a scratch golfer or a serial sand-trapper, all are welcome – the more balls lost in the water, the better the stories at the 19th hole. Why the Big Day? Die Wilge isn’t just about books and blackboards – they’re on a mission to provide quality education to learners with Special Educational Needs (LSEN), with a strong focus on vocational skills and personal development. And like most good things in life, it takes a bit of cash to keep it all going. So the school’s hoping for a bit of generosity – in the form of players, sponsors, prizes, or just some solid participation. If you can hit a ball or sponsor a hole, you’re already halfway to making a difference. How Much Is It Gonna Cost Me? Pretty straightforward: R400 per player R1600 for a 4 ball R1500 to sponsor a hole R3000 for both a 4 ball and hole sponsorship combo If you’re feeling generous (or the boss is paying), go big with the combo. Bookings can be done via WhatsApp or phone on 082 872 6272 or 084 701 0271. And yes, if you’re planning on cruising around in a cart – you’ll need to book that through Potch Country Club directly. Don’t arrive with expectations and leave on foot. Who’s Behind It? Mr AB Rudd, principal of Die Wilge, is the driving force behind the event – along with the dedicated staff and sponsors who keep the wheels turning. Or in this case, the golf carts rolling. They’re asking for companies and individuals to get involved – whether it’s by donating prizes, sponsoring holes, or just coming along to play a round. It’s not only a chance to support a good cause but a sneaky networking opportunity disguised as a social round of golf. Whether you come for the golf or stay for the laughs, it’s a chance to support a school doing important work. And hey, if your swing’s not up to scratch, at least the company and the cause will be worth the effort.

  • Potchefstroom Residents Take Action Against Worsening Sewage Crisis

The JB Marks Concerned Citizens (JBMCC) group has taken decisive legal steps to demand accountability and immediate action from the JB Marks Local Municipality and Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality following an alarming escalation of sewage spillages throughout Potchefstroom. A City in Crisis Residents from multiple suburbs, including Promosa, Baillie Park, Central Town, Van der Hoff Park, and others — have been documenting and reporting severe sewage overflows that have rendered homes unsanitary, green spaces toxic, and parts of the Mooi River and nearby wetlands dangerously polluted. Notable affected locations include: Meadow Street Kock Street Jan Smuts Avenue Parys Avenue Abraham Street (Promosa) Ben Pienaar Street Drommedaris Street Graphic photos from these areas reveal open sewage pouring into streets and yards, with residents unable to use their toilets and enduring overwhelming stench and health hazards. Legal Intervention: A Voice for the Voiceless Andreas Peens Attorneys, acting on behalf of JBMCC, issued a formal legal demand on 10 April 2025 , asserting the municipality’s ongoing violation of Section 24 of the Constitution , which guarantees every citizen the right to a healthy environment. The letter strongly criticizes the local government's failure to address service delivery, noting a pattern of neglect despite repeated community complaints and a previous contempt of court finding in the Poortjie Dam case. JBMCC has now issued a strict ultimatum: Clean up and repair the sewage systems by 12:00 on 16 April 2025 . Provide a formal record of steps taken to address and prevent future spillages. Failure to comply will result in an urgent court application to compel the municipality to fulfil its basic constitutional duties. Why This Matters This is more than just a legal fight. It's about reclaiming the dignity, health, and liveability of our community. Raw sewage contaminates not just private homes but the Mooi River — a critical water source near the OPM Prozesky Bird Sanctuary. If left unresolved, the situation poses an environmental and public health catastrophe . Call to the Community The JBMCC invites residents to continue submitting photographic evidence and join the call for clean, safe neighbourhoods. The community's united voice is forcing long-overdue action — and this is just the beginning. Images from Residents The Legal Documents from JB Marks Concerned Citizens (JBMCC)

  • Disarming the Frontline: How PSIRA’s Proposed Gun‑Law Shake‑Up Could Leave South Africans Less Safe

Draft Firearm Regulations under the Private Security Industry Regulation Act (PSIRA) 1. What exactly is on the table? The Minister of Police gazetted draft amendments to the  Private Security Industry Firearms Regulations  on 28 March 2025 , with public‑comment open until 25 April 2025 . Key provisions include: Proposed clause Practical effect Restrict rifles  to cash‑in‑transit, critical‑infrastructure & anti‑poaching only Tactical response and mine‑security units would lose semi‑automatic rifles in most deployments  No firearms in public spaces  (malls, schools, hospitals, taxi ranks, residential streets) without an approved risk‑assessment Armed‑response patrols and mall guards would need case‑by‑case authorisation  “Reasonable” ammo limit  (undefined) Uncertainty over how many rounds guards may carry  Annual medical, psychometric & psychiatric tests  for every armed officer, paid by the employer Higher compliance costs; standards not yet defined Tracking device in every firearm Technology not commercially viable at scale, huge cost & data‑security fears Ban on “less‑lethal” tools  (rubber bullets, water cannons, Tasers) unless a separate exemption is obtained 7 days in advance Hinders crowd‑management and protest security  Companies under investigation may not issue firearms A mere allegation could disarm an entire firm before any finding of guilt  2. Government & supporter view — the pros Benefit claimed Supporting point Closer oversight of a huge, lightly‑policed sector  – ± 600 000 active guards vs 150 000 SAPS officers Oversight gap highlighted by Gun Free SA  Aligns PSIRA rules with the Firearms Control Act PSIRA says the aim is harmonisation, not a blanket disarmament  Reduces public exposure to high‑calibre weapons Complaints about bodyguards openly carrying assault‑style rifles in restaurants & churches  Forces regular fitness‑for‑duty screening  to weed out unstable or substance‑abusing officers Research links prior violence/alcohol misuse to gun incidents  Firearm‑tracking & ammo‑control could curb diversion  of guns to criminals PSIRA stresses theft‑prevention intent  International precedent:  many countries keep armed private guards out of civilian spaces PSIRA notes SA’s draft mirrors stricter overseas models  3. Security‑industry & opposition view — the cons Concern Why it matters Operational paralysis in public spaces Armed‑response units could not lawfully enter streets, schools or shops during an alarm call  Cash‑in‑transit & high‑risk escorts weakened Semi‑automatic rifles are routinely needed beyond the narrow categories listed  Job & business losses  – industry worth ± R50 bn, over 580 000 jobs Big employers such as Fidelity warn of closures and layoffs  Unfunded, impractical tech mandates No proven, affordable gun‑tracking devices exist yet  “Guilty‑until‑proved‑innocent” clause A rival or disgruntled client could lodge a complaint and instantly disarm a company  Ban on less‑lethal tools  removes intermediate force options Could push guards towards lethal force sooner, or leave them defenceless  Adds red‑tape instead of fixing weak enforcement Rogue firms already flout existing laws; piling on new rules hurts compliant players  4. Potential impact on ordinary citizens Public‑space deterrence:  Fewer visibly armed guards in malls, taxi ranks and residential complexes could embolden robbers and hijackers, especially given SAPS shortages  Response times:  If armed response teams must first secure PSIRA exemptions for every area they patrol, alarm call‑outs could be delayed or unarmed. Crime displacement:  Well‑resourced criminals (cash‑in‑transit gangs, shopping‑mall robbery crews) typically carry AK‑ and R‑series rifles. Limiting guards to handguns in those environments may tilt the fire‑power balance. Economic knock‑on:  Lay‑offs in a sector that employs more people than mining would raise unemployment and erode a critical crime‑prevention layer. Conversely, fewer guns in crowded civilian areas might cut accidental discharges and stray‑bullet injuries, a long‑standing public‑health worry. 5. Constitutional & legal flashpoints Right implicated Possible challenge s 12(1)(c) right to freedom & security of the person Citizens may argue reduced private‑security capability infringes their safety. s 22 freedom of trade, occupation & profession Firms disarmed “under investigation” could claim arbitrary deprivation of livelihood. Administrative‑justice (PAJA) Vague terms (“reasonable ammunition”) open the door to inconsistent, potentially irrational decisions. 6. Where to from here? Public‑comment closes 25 April 2025 ; PSIRA and the Police Ministry must digest submissions, revise and retable the draft. Industry bodies (SASA, SAGA, large guarding companies) plan a coordinated legal strategy should contentious clauses survive the red‑pen stage. Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Police  is expected to call PSIRA to justify the draft during the upcoming winter session. Bottom line South Africa desperately needs tighter control over a private‑security sector that now outnumbers SAPS officers four‑to‑one . Many of the draft regulations – annual psych tests, better firearm registers, and a clamp‑down on rogue operators – are sound in principle. Yet the current wording overshoots : impractical tech mandates, blanket geographical bans, and a presumption of guilt could cripple a R50 billion frontline against violent crime . Unless the draft is substantially re‑balanced after consultation, ordinary citizens may find themselves less protected, not more . A workable compromise would:  Target non‑compliant firms with stricter audits & sanctions  instead of disarming the whole sector. Define terms like “reasonable ammunition”  and set clear, affordable tech standards. Phase in high‑cost requirements  (e.g., tracking) only when the technology is proven and subsidised. Retain less‑lethal options  under a robust licensing regime rather than a near‑blanket ban. Constructive engagement now – not courtroom battles later – will determine whether these rules become a sensible safety net  or a self‑inflicted security vacuum .

  • VAT Attack: Why South Africa’s 1‑Point Tax Hike Has Citizens, Courts & Wallets on Edge

South Africa’s Treasury plans to lift the standard VAT rate from 15 % to 16 % in two steps  (œ percentage‑point on 1 May 2025 , another œ percentage‑point on 1 April 2026 ). Government says it needs the extra ± R28 billion over two years to plug a widening budget gap and fund social‑grant expansions, while keeping the lights on at Eskom and paying rising debt‑service costs.Opposition parties (DA, EFF) and some civil‑society groups have gone to court, arguing the hike is rushed, regressive and unconstitutional. Unions such as COSATU warn that blocking the increase could blow an even bigger hole in state finances. 1. What exactly is being proposed? Current VAT Proposed increase Effective dates New rate 15 % +0.5 pp 1 May 2025 15.5 % +0.5 pp 1 Apr 2026 16 % The Treasury argues South Africa’s rate is still below the OECD average (19 %) and many peer economies.   2. Why does government want it? Fiscal pressure Details Budget shortfall ± R60 bn after a dip in corporate‑tax receipts and the expiry of some U.S. HIV‑AIDS funding. Debt‑service costs Interest now absorbs ± R385 bn a year (almost as much as health). Social‑spending promises Extending the SRD grant, above‑inflation increases in child‑support and old‑age grants, and a pilot basic‑income grant. SOE & infrastructure bail‑outs Eskom debt relief, passenger‑rail recovery, water‑board repairs. “Least bad” tax lever Treasury says VAT raises lots of money quickly with comparatively small drag on growth vs. higher personal or corporate taxes. The finance minister told Parliament that abandoning the hike would “severely damage” the fiscal framework. citeturn1news9 3. What will the money be used for? Allocation (2025/26) Approx. additional funding source Social Protection  (grants, school‑feeding, new zero‑rating on offal & canned veg) R10 bn Energy & Infrastructure  (Eskom support, water boards, SANRAL backlog) R7 bn Health & Education stabilisation R5 bn Debt‑service buffer R6 bn (Breakdown derived from Chapter 4 of the 2025 Budget Review.)   4. Who is fighting it, and on what grounds? Democratic Alliance & EFF court bid  – seek an urgent interdict to halt implementation, arguing lack of proper public participation and that Section 7(4) of the VAT Act is unconstitutional. Coalition turmoil  – the DA has already threatened to quit the national coalition over the hike. Unions  – COSATU opposes litigation but wants more zero‑rated foods and a claw‑back on luxury goods. Business & NGOs  – some retailers warn of pass‑through costs; civil‑society budget groups propose wealth‑tax alternatives. 5. How much would it actually cost an ordinary household? Every extra 0.5 percentage‑point adds R5 to the price of every R1 000 of taxable  spending. Monthly VAT‑able spend Extra cost in 2025 (15 % ➜ 15.5 %) Extra cost in 2026 (15.5 % ➜ 16 %) Two‑year total R3 000 (tight budget) R15 / month +R15 R360 / year R7 000 (average urban) R35 / month +R35 R840 / year R15 000 (upper‑middle) R75 / month +R75 R1 800 / year Things not affected: 21 existing zero‑rated staples (maize meal, brown bread, fresh fruit/veg, etc.) Newly zero‑rated items from 1 May 2025: poultry & beef offal, tinned veg, dairy blends. Municipal rates, bus/minibus taxi fares, school fees at public schools (all VAT‑exempt). Things affected: Fuel, airtime/data, restaurant meals, most retail goods and services. Electricity: Eskom charges VAT; municipalities pass it on to prepaid customers. 6. Should you care — or just accept? Point to care about Counter‑point Cost‑of‑living squeeze  – food inflation may slow but transport & electricity hikes compound the hit. Low‑income households have less buffer. Half‑point steps stagger the blow; poor households buy more zero‑rated items. Treasury data show top four expenditure deciles pay 75 % of VAT. Precedent & transparency  – if the hike is rushed without robust public consultation, it weakens accountability over future tax changes. Section 77 of the Constitution lets a simple‑majority Budget change VAT. Courts must still test whether procedure was followed. Alternatives exist  – wealth‑tax, carbon levy, luxury‑goods excise, stronger enforcement. Those options take longer to implement and may yield less revenue in the short term. Economic signal  – higher consumption tax could dampen discretionary spending, hitting retail jobs. Treasury argues VAT is growth‑friendlier than raising PIT/CIT; keeping borrowing in check averts rating downgrades that hurt everyone. 7. What happens next? Court timelines  – Western Cape High Court will hear the urgent interdict in late April; a merits hearing could drag into the second half of 2025. Parliamentary amendments  – Money Bills Committee can still tweak or scrap the hike before the Revenue Laws Amendment Bill is finalised in June. Retailer pricing  – Large chains usually change shelf prices overnight; many SMEs absorb part of the first 0.5 pp to stay competitive. Possible compromises  – Opposition has hinted it might accept 0.25 pp now plus a wider zero‑rating basket; Treasury signals “everything is on the table” if revenue can be found elsewhere. Bottom line Even a 1 percentage‑point VAT rise is not apocalypse, but it is material  for cash‑strapped households and sets the tone for who shoulders SA’s fiscal pain.Staying informed, participating in public‑comment windows, and watching how the courts rule are practical ways not to “just accept” a decision that touches every till slip in your wallet.

  • Vegetarian and Vegan: The Differences and How They Impact Your Health

đŸŒ±đŸŽ đŸŒ±đŸŽ đŸŒ±đŸŽ đŸŒ±đŸŽ đŸŒ±đŸŽ More people are switching to vegetarian or vegan diets these days – whether it’s for health, environmental, or ethical reasons. But what’s the difference between the two, and how does it affect your health? What’s the Difference Between Vegetarian and Vegan? đŸ„Š ✅ Vegetarian: Vegetarians don’t eat meat, fish, or poultry. But they still include animal by-products  like eggs, milk, cheese, and yoghurt in their diets. ✅ Vegan: Vegans cut out all animal products – no meat, no dairy, no eggs, and not even honey. Their diet is fully plant-based . Both diets focus heavily on fruits, veggies, grains, legumes, nuts, and seeds – but vegans go the extra mile in avoiding anything animal-related. Health Benefits 🌿 Both vegetarian and vegan diets, if planned properly, can have great health benefits: đŸ’Ș Lower risk of heart disease  – Less saturated fats from animal products means better heart health. đŸ©ž Reduced risk of type 2 diabetes  – Whole plant foods help manage blood sugar levels. ⚖ Weight management  – Plant-based diets are often lower in calories and high in fibre, helping you stay fuller for longer. đŸŒŸ Rich in fibre, vitamins, and minerals  – Especially when eating a variety of whole foods. But
What Are the Risks? ⚠ While these diets have great benefits, they do come with some challenges if not managed properly: đŸ„© Protein Intake: Without meat, it’s important to get enough plant-based protein from beans, lentils, nuts, tofu, and soy products. ☀ Vitamin B12 Deficiency: B12 is mostly found in animal products. Vegans especially might need B12 supplements or fortified foods. 🩮 Calcium and Iron: Skipping dairy or meat can lower calcium and iron intake. Dark leafy greens, nuts, and plant-based milk can help fill the gap. 🧠 Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Important for brain health – usually found in fish. Vegans can get it from flaxseeds, chia seeds, and walnuts. What About the Environmental Impact? 🌍 One of the big reasons people choose these diets is the impact on the environment. Producing meat, especially beef, uses a lot of land, water, and energy.Plant-based diets are seen as more sustainable , with a smaller carbon footprint. Is It for Everyone? đŸ€” Vegetarian and vegan diets can work for most people – but they do require some planning. If you’re thinking of making the switch, it’s a good idea to: ✅ Do your research ✅ Speak to a dietitian or nutritionist ✅ Make sure you’re getting all the essential nutrients It’s not just about cutting things out – it’s about replacing them properly. At the end of the day, vegetarian and vegan diets can be very healthy if balanced right. The key is variety, proper planning, and making sure your body gets everything it needs. Whether it’s for your health, the animals, or the planet – going plant-based is a personal journey, but one worth exploring. đŸŒ±đŸŽ đŸŒ±đŸŽ đŸŒ±đŸŽ đŸŒ±đŸŽ đŸŒ±đŸŽ #HealthyLiving   #Vegetarian   #Vegan   #PlantBased   #NutritionMatters   #PotchLife   #PotchGazette   #TheGoToGuy   #StroomStories   #Potchefstroom   #Sportstroom

  • Was Food Healthier 100 Years Ago? A Look at How Our Diets Have Changed

🍎🍗 🍎🍗 🍎🍗 🍎🍗 🍎🍗 Over the years, the way we farm, cook, and eat has changed massively. From small-scale farming and fresh produce to mass production and processed foods, it’s clear that what we eat today is very different from what people ate 100 years ago. But is today’s food actually healthier? Farming Back Then vs Now đŸŒŸ A century ago, most food was grown organically – no chemicals, no fancy machines, just farmers and their land. Families had small gardens and farms producing natural, chemical-free vegetables, fruits, and grains. These days, to feed growing populations, farmers rely heavily on chemicals like pesticides and fertilisers.  Genetically modified crops (GMOs) are common because they resist pests and grow faster. But, with that comes health risks – some chemicals and GM foods have been linked to allergies and health problems. Meat – From Grass to Growth Hormones 🐄 Meat production has changed too. In the past, animals roamed free, fed on natural grass, and were slaughtered in small numbers. Now, large factories raise animals in bulk using chemical-packed feed and, at times, growth hormones like Zeranol and Testosterone to speed things up. These hormones boost meat and milk production but have been linked to cancer risks. Simply put, the meat people ate 100 years ago was cleaner and safer. Processed Food – Easy but Risky đŸ”đŸ„€ Today, more than 75% of global food sales come from processed foods. Busy lifestyles, fast-food chains, and aggressive marketing have pushed many away from traditional diets rich in nuts, grains, and fresh veggies. Processed foods are often loaded with sugar, fat, and preservatives, which can lead to obesity, diabetes, cancer, and heart problems. In contrast, traditional diets back then were naturally nutritious and packed with fibre, vitamins, and minerals. Food Was Cheaper and More Accessible đŸŒœ Back then, food was grown at home or sourced locally. People ate what was available, fresh and seasonal. Now, due to urbanisation, many live in cities and depend on supermarkets – where healthy food comes with a hefty price tag. Fresh fruits and vegetables have become expensive, forcing many to choose cheaper, less healthy options. This has increased cases of undernutrition and malnutrition, especially in low-income communities. Environmental Impact on Nutrition 🌍 Pollution and industrial farming have also lowered the nutritional value of modern crops. Studies show that soil mineral depletion means today’s crops have fewer vitamins and minerals than the ones grown 100 years ago. Air pollution further stunts crop growth and reduces nutritional content, leaving us with less healthy food on our plates. What About Longer Life Expectancy? ⏳ Research shows that traditional diets filled with grains, fruits, and vegetables are linked to better health and longer life. These foods fight inflammation, lower body weight, and reduce the risk of chronic diseases. Today’s processed food choices, however, contribute to the rising number of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) like heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. Are Modern Foods Really Safer? đŸ€” Some argue that today’s food is safer because of strict regulations and added nutrients in processed foods. It’s true – food standards and nutritional guidelines have improved. Supplements also help fill the nutritional gaps. Still, it’s important to remember that most processed foods lose essential nutrients during manufacturing. Added sugars, unhealthy fats, and preservatives do more harm than good when consumed long-term. Globalisation Brings Variety – But At What Cost? 🌎 Globalisation means we now have access to foods from all over the world – from sushi to pasta. But most of these global favourites are processed, making it harder to stick to healthy, traditional foods. Final Thoughts – Was Food Healthier 100 Years Ago? ✅ Looking at the facts, food 100 years ago was naturally healthier. Organic farming, chemical-free meat, and traditional diets gave people the nutrition they needed without the risks of modern processed foods. Today, while regulations and technology have made food safer in some ways, the rise of processed foods, chemicals in farming, and environmental damage have reduced the nutritional value of what we eat. At the end of the day, going back to basics – more fresh produce, less processed food – might just be what we need to live healthier lives. 🍎🍗 🍎🍗 🍎🍗 🍎🍗 🍎🍗 #HealthyEating   #TraditionalFood   #ModernFoodChoices   #FoodForThought   #SouthAfricanLiving
