- The Weekly Diary: Heritage, Governance, and the Newest Burger on the Bult
Welcome back, Potchefstroom! We’ve officially crossed into the middle of April 2026, and the pace in our beautiful city isn't showing any signs of slowing down. Image (Created) : The Go-To Guy This week, the Go-To Guy team has been balancing the "now" and the "then",from the launch of trendy new eateries and the arrival of world-class tool ranges to somber deep dives into our local history and municipal governance. Whether you’re looking to finish a DIY project, grab a world-class burger, or understand the administrative shifts in our municipality, Week 15 has something for everyone. Grab a cup of coffee and settle in for your 10-minute briefing on the life and times of Potchefstroom and Ikageng. Our Eyes in the Field: Potchefstroom Our "Eyes in the Field" team has been zigzagging across town this week, from the bustling Steve Biko Street to the quiet, hallowed grounds of Alexander Park. Here is the chronological breakdown of the week that was. April 13: A New Spot on the Bult – Stud. Burger is Open! We kicked off the week with some mouth-watering news for the foodies and students of Potch. Stud. Burger has officially opened its doors in Steve Biko Street! The Bult has always been the heartbeat of Potchefstroom's social scene, and this new addition is already turning heads. Our team popped in to get a first look at the interior and the vibe, and it’s safe to say they’ve nailed the "urban-cool" aesthetic. If you’re looking for a new "spot" to grab a bite between classes or a Friday night treat, watch our video tour and then head over to Steve Biko Street to taste what the hype is about. April 14: Value Meets Variety – Ingco at Build it On Tuesday, our focus shifted to the builders and DIY enthusiasts. We visited the floor at Build it to check out their impressive Ingco range. Ingco has rapidly become a favorite for both professionals and home-improvement hobbyists because of its incredible balance between durability and price. The full range is currently on the floor, and the team at Build it is running some fantastic specials. If you’ve been putting off that home project, now is the time to get more value for your money. Image (Created) : The Go-To Guy April 16: Heritage and History – A Visit to Alexander Park Thursday was a day of reflection as we stepped away from the commercial hustle to visit the historic Alexander Park Cemetery. We had the privilege of walking through the grounds with Johan Wolfaardt, the Vice-Chairman of Heritage Potch Erfenis. Johan shared fascinating insights into the "stories behind the gravestones",the pioneers and residents who built the foundation of the town we live in today. It was a sobering reminder of the importance of preserving our heritage sites. Often, we drive past these areas without realizing the rich history buried right next to us. Our latest video feature explores this in detail; it’s a must-watch for anyone who loves the history of our town. April 16: Accountability – The MPAC Governance Crisis Report In a shift toward civic duty and accountability, we also reported on a developing story within the JB Marks Local Municipality. The Municipal Public Accounts Committee (MPAC) has officially flagged a significant governance crisis and widespread administrative non-compliance. This report highlights serious concerns regarding how our local municipality is being managed. At The Go-To Guy , we believe in keeping our community informed on the "uncomfortable" news just as much as the "good" news, as transparency is the only way toward a better-functioning city. April 16: More Gear! Ingco Arrives at Flotek It seems April is the month of Ingco! For those located closer to the industrial area, Flotek has also announced that they are now officially stocking a wide variety of Ingco products. There’s no longer a need to drive across town to find high-quality tools for your plumbing or mechanical projects. Having a range this versatile available at Flotek makes it even easier to get all your professional equipment under one roof. April 17: Finishing Projects with Oppi Copy We wrapped up the week by visiting the team at Oppi Copy . If you have a project that needs a professional finish, this is your one-stop shop. From personal home decor like high-quality canvases to professional business needs like custom stickers and Plexiglas signage, they do it all. Keep an Eye Out: They are very active on social media, which is the best place to catch their latest specials and competitions. Convenience: They are open Monday through Friday, and, crucially for those of us with busy schedules, they are also open on Saturdays . Image (Created) : The Go-To Guy Ikageng: Energy, Art, and the Basketball Court While Potchefstroom was busy with business and history, Ikageng was alive with the sound of music and the rhythm of the streets. April 13: "Payback Time" at the Basketball Court If you weren't at the basketball court this past Saturday, you missed something special. Payback Time brought the heat for an afternoon of high-intensity dance and community vibes. Ikageng’s street culture is thriving, and the talent on display was truly "next level." Our team captured the highlights, and the energy in the footage speaks for itself. Shoutout to every dancer who left it all on the floor, the passion and discipline it takes to perform at that level is exactly what we love to see in our community. Stay tuned to our Ikageng feed for the realest updates on the local scene. Final Thoughts Week 15 has been a perfect example of the balance we strive for at The Go-To Guy . We want to celebrate the new (like Stud. Burger), support the local economy (like Build it and Oppi Copy), and respect the past (like Alexander Park). Even while our StroomStories studio is taking a short break, we are out there every day ensuring you don't miss a beat. Whether it’s at the stadium, the cemetery, or the shopping center, we are your eyes and ears in the field.

- Don’t Let Your Finances Pull You Under: Simple Accounting for Your Growing Business
It’s a common story: you start a business because you’re passionate about your craft—whether it’s baking, building, or consulting. But suddenly, you find yourself drowning in spreadsheets, receipts, and confusing acronyms like VAT and PAYE. At Wave Breaking Accountants , we believe you should be riding the wave of your success, not getting swept away by the paperwork. Here is how we simplify the "scary" side of money for you. Bookkeeping: Your Monthly Reality Check Think of bookkeeping as a diary for your business's money. Every cup of coffee bought for a client or every invoice paid by a customer needs to be recorded. If you don't stay on top of it, you’ll have no idea if you’re actually making a profit or just spinning your wheels. We handle the recording and organizing so you always have a clear picture of your financial health without lifting a pen. Navigating the Tax Surf: VAT and PAYE These are the two big ones that keep business owners up at night: VAT (Value Added Tax): This is essentially a "consumption tax." If your business earns over a certain amount, you have to collect tax for the government. It’s tricky to calculate, and the deadlines are strict. PAYE (Pay As You Earn): If you have employees, you’re responsible for deducting tax from their salaries and paying it over to the revenue service. We take over these submissions, ensuring you stay compliant . In plain English: we make sure you don't get fined and that the government stays happy. Focus on What You Love The biggest cost of doing your own accounting isn't the money—it’s the time . Every hour you spend trying to figure out a tax form is an hour you aren't spending growing your business, meeting new clients, or improving your product. By letting us handle the precision work, you get your time back. Accounting That Moves With You We don't just "do the math." We provide accounting that moves at the speed of your success. Whether you are just starting out or are ready to scale to the next level, we provide the precision and professionalism you need to keep moving forward. Ready to simplify your life? Stop worrying about the numbers and start focusing on your vision. Contact us today for a consultation. Call: 072-200-8667 Wave Breaking Accountants: Precision. Professionalism. Success.

- Echoes of the Oude Begraafplaats: The Living History of Alexandra Park
In the quiet corners of Potchefstroom, where the grass grows long and the shadows of ancient trees stretch across weathered stone, lies a sanctuary that bridges two centuries of South African triumph and tragedy. Alexandra Park , known to historians as the "Old Cemetery" or Oude Begraafplaats , is far more than a collection of graves; it is a sprawling open-air archive of the Transvaal’s earliest days. Established in 1840, just two years after the town itself was founded, this sacred ground serves as the final resting place for the architects of a republic, the victims of a brutal war, and the pioneers who brought the first printed words to the interior. A Heritage in the Long Grass Today, the park reflects the complex reality of South African heritage preservation in the 21st century. Visitors arriving at the entrance are met with a scene that is both haunting and evocative: vast stretches of unmanicured grass and weeds often obscure the smaller markers, a stark departure from the manicured rose beds of its 1903 namesake. Cracks snake through the boundary walls, and many of the original slate headstones have succumbed to the elements, their inscriptions flaking away into the soil. Yet, this "wild" state also highlights the urgent, dedicated work of organizations like Heritage Potch . While the municipality struggles with the immense task of maintaining such a large historic site, the park remains open to those who know its secrets, a place where the history isn't just displayed, but is actively being reclaimed from the earth. The current condition serves as a powerful metaphor for memory itself: if not actively tended, even the greatest stories can be swallowed by time. A Republic’s Architect: The Legacy of M.W. Pretorius At the heart of the park stands one of Potchefstroom’s most significant landmarks: the tomb of Marthinus Wessel Pretorius . As the first President of the South African Republic (ZAR) and the man who founded Pretoria, his influence on the geopolitical landscape of the region cannot be overstated. The monument seen today, a towering sandstone obelisk, was not part of the original 1840 layout. It was unveiled in 1913 by General Louis Botha, the first Prime Minister of the Union of South Africa. The ceremony was a poignant moment of national reconciliation, facilitated by Pretorius’s grandson, Izak Meyer. Walking through the park today, the monument serves as a North Star for visitors, a reminder of the era when Potchefstroom was the capital of the Transvaal and the center of Boer political life. From Sacred Ground to Edwardian Elegance By the turn of the 20th century, the cemetery had begun to take on a dual identity. In 1903, it was formally named Alexandra Park , in honor of Queen Alexandra, the wife of King Edward VII. This period saw the site transition from a somber burial ground into a curated public space. Historical photographs from 1909 capture a striking contrast: the band of the 9th Lancers performing during St. George’s Day celebrations. Under large canvas tents, Victorian and Edwardian residents gathered for festival services, surrounded by rose beds and manicured paths. It was a place where the living and the dead coexisted, a park for Sunday strolls that just happened to hold the bones of the town’s founders. The Shadow of the Anglo-Boer War The peaceful park-like atmosphere of the early 1900s was a necessary veil over the immense tragedy that had occurred just years prior. During the Anglo-Boer War (1899–1902), the cemetery reached its capacity with devastating speed. The British concentration camp, located nearby on the site of what is now Potchefstroom Boys High, saw a high mortality rate among Boer women and children. Simultaneously, British soldiers were succumbing to both the wounds of battle and the ravages of enteric fever. The park contains a dedicated section for these British "fallen," including Private H. Thomas of the 2nd South Wales Borderers, killed in action at Modderfontein in 1901. His headstone, erected by "comrades of all ranks," stands as a testament to the military brotherhood that persisted even in a foreign land. Pioneers of the Press and Pulpit Beyond the military and political giants, Alexandra Park preserves the memories of those who built the cultural fabric of the Transvaal. Among the weathered stones is the grave of J.P. Borrius , a Dutch immigrant who became the first printer in the Transvaal. Borrius was a visionary who realized that for a republic to survive, it needed a voice; he served as the first editor of the region's first newspaper. Nearby lies Dominee van der Hoff , the first minister of the Nederduitsch Hervormde Kerk in the Transvaal. These men represent the intellectual and spiritual foundations of early Potchefstroom. Their graves, often marked by intricate ironwork or simple slate slabs, are the physical remains of the "Big Institutions", the press and the church, that defined 19th-century life. Conservation Amidst Decay The passage of time has not been kind to all who rest here. As noted by Heritage Potch, many early graves were marked only with piles of stones or slate headstones. Slate, while abundant, is prone to "delamination," where the layers of stone peel and crumble, erasing names and dates. In the 1970s, a major consolidation effort was undertaken to save what remained. Many individual headstones were moved into central memorial walls, and the names of the "missing" were inscribed on plaques to ensure they were not forgotten by history. Some of the most fragile artifacts have even been moved to the Potchefstroom Museum for professional preservation, leaving the park as a symbolic landscape of memory. A Silent Sentinel of the Mooi River Today, Alexandra Park stands as a silent witness to the evolution of Potchefstroom. It has survived the transition from a frontier town to a colonial outpost, and finally to a modern academic hub. When you walk these grounds, you are walking through a timeline of South African history. From the cannons that flank the Pretorius monument to the simple crosses of nameless soldiers, every inch of the park tells a story of a people striving to build a home in a changing world. It remains a place of profound quiet, a sanctuary where the ghosts of the past remind us of the grit and grace it took to build the city we see today. - The Shadow of the Transvaal: The Reality of the Klerksdorp Concentration Camps
The history of Klerksdorp is inextricably linked to the Second Anglo-Boer War (1899–1902), a conflict that introduced a devastating military strategy known as the "Scorched Earth" policy. While the town’s stock exchange represented the height of colonial ambition, the concentration camps established on its outskirts represented the nadir of human suffering in the region. Image: Wikipedia An Institutional Failure The Klerksdorp camps were not "refugee centers" in any voluntary sense; they were forced internment sites designed to break the logistics and morale of the Boer commandos by removing their families and labor force from the land. The reality of these camps was defined by what Sir Henry Campbell-Bannerman termed a "method of barbarism", characterized by chronic overcrowding and a catastrophic lack of medical foresight. Image: Wikipedia The White Concentration Camp: A Legacy of Loss Established in late 1900, the Boer camp located south of the town grew rapidly in May 1901. As British "drives" cleared surrounding farms, the population swelled with destitute families. Although considered "well-run" by British administrative standards due to its proximity to supply lines, it became one of the deadliest sites in the Transvaal. Monthly Timeline of the 1901 Crisis: Year/Month Notable Condition/Event Impact on Inmates 1901 May Rapid population surge Nearly 1,000 new arrivals; severe overcrowding. 1901 July Measles Outbreak Mortality spiked as disease spread through tent rows. 1901 August Quarantined Entire camp isolated to prevent scarlet fever entry. 1901 Sept Peak Mortality Deaths reached critical levels; Typhoid became rampant. 1901 Oct Medical Emergency Dr. Russell established "tent hospitals" for malnutrition. The Invisible Toll: Black Concentration Camps A frequently overlooked truth is the establishment of separate camps for Black South Africans. Often the farmworkers or servants of the Boers, they were caught in the crossfire of the scorched earth policy. The British military placed these camps strategically along railway lines to utilize the men as forced labor for digging trenches or scouting. Unlike the Boer camps, the British did not initially feel a "moral obligation" to provide full rations or medical care to Black internees. Inmates were often forced to "earn" their rations through labor, leaving the elderly and children to suffer from extreme malnutrition and exposure. The Medical Crisis and Mortality The tragedy was exacerbated by diseases that targeted the vulnerable. Measles, Typhoid (enteric fever), and Pneumonia were the primary killers. One of the most horrifying conditions recorded was Cancrum Oris , a form of jaw gangrene that affected malnourished children who had survived other infections. The camp’s medical officer, Dr. Russell, attempted to mitigate the disaster by setting up specialized marquee hospitals. However, the "Scorched Earth" policy had created a humanitarian crisis the British logistical tail was never designed to handle. Fresh vegetables and milk were luxuries, leading to widespread scurvy and marasmus (severe malnutrition). Image: Wikipedia The Cemetery of Memories Today, the Klerksdorp Concentration Camp Cemetery remains as a stark historical landmark. It contains the graves of over 1,600 people who perished in the camp, the vast majority being children under the age of fifteen. It stands as a silent witness to the cost of "total war," where civilians become the primary target. Image: Klerksdorp Concentration Camp Cemetery, where woman and children were buried. Architecture of Endurance Despite the horrors, stories of human resilience survived. Women used sewing machines to earn small incomes for "medical comforts," and others brought pianos and organs on wagons, refusing to let the military strip them of their cultural dignity even as their homes burned. #BoerWarHistory #KlerksdorpConcentrationCamp #SouthAfricanHistory #ScorchedEarth #NorthWestHistory #ConcentrationCamps #MilitaryHistory
