Woord + Beeld = Kuns met karakter Hierdie is nie jou tipiese galery-ervaring nie. Plaaslike kunstenaars van Potchefstroom én Klerksdorp bring hul gunsteling Afrikaanse woorde en idiome tot lewe deur beeldende kuns. Dit gaan oor kleur, gevoel, storie en natuurlik, lekker Afrikaans. En moenie worry as jy nie Afrikaans magtig is nie – dis vir almal, selfs vir die wat nog "howzit" en "eish" meng in hul sinne. Wie’s agter die feesgedoente? Dié kunsprojek is deel van die groter Afrikaans 100 Feesveldtog, wat geskop is deur die Afrikaanse Taalraad (ATR) en die Afrikaanse Taalmuseum en -monument (ATM). In ‘n insiggewende episode van Stroom Stories, het Pieter as gasheer ‘n gesprek gevoer met twee raadslede van Potchefstroom: André Klopper (Wyk 7) en Heinricha Hodgson (Wyk 5). Die gesprek het gefokus op die uitdagings en oplossings binne hul wyke, asook hoe inwoners betrokke kan raak om ‘n positiewe verskil te maak. Image: The Go-To Guy Die Huidige Stand van Sake in Wyk 7 en Wyk 5 Beide raadslede het eerstehands insig gegee oor die kwessies wat hul gemeenskappe raak. • Wyk 7 (André Klopper): Hierdie gebied staar verskeie infrastruktuurprobleme in die gesig, insluitend paaie wat herstel moet word en ‘n behoefte aan verbeterde munisipale dienste. Klopper het beklemtoon dat samewerking tussen die munisipaliteit en inwoners van kardinale belang is om volhoubare oplossings te vind. Sy mikpunt met hierdie onderhoud is om mense meer bewus te maak en sy eerste doel is om die mense te dien. Hy het ‘n diep passie vir sy dorp en sy gemeenskap. Gebore en getoë in Potchefstroom, het hy deur Baillie Park, Gimmies en Pukke gegaan, en sy familie is al generasies lank in die dorp gevestig. • Wyk 5 (Heinricha Hodgson): Hodgson is ‘n plaaslike prokureur sowel as ‘n wyksraadslid en woon al meer as 40 jaar in Potchefstroom. Sy het verduidelik hoe sosiale uitdagings, insluitend veiligheid en behuising, ‘n groot impak op inwoners het. Sy het ook gefokus op die belangrikheid van gemeenskapsbetrokkenheid en hoe inwoners gehelp kan word om hul omgewing te verbeter. Die Rol van ‘n Raadslid Daar is dikwels verwarring oor wat ‘n raadslid se rol werklik is, veral in ‘n tyd waar die munisipaliteit in ‘n chaotiese toestand verkeer. Volgens Klopper en Hodgson is daar ‘n wanpersepsie dat raadslede bloot “glorified telefoon antwoorders” is. Hulle interaksie met die gemeenskap is egter van ‘n baie meer intense aard, aangesien hulle direk met inwoners se probleme werk en probeer oplossings vind. ’n Raadslid se primêre verantwoordelikheid is om as verteenwoordiger van die gemeenskap op te tree en met ‘n mandaat in die stadsraad hul inwoners te dien. In die huidige situasie is dit egter nie altyd moontlik nie, aangesien verslae dikwels net ‘n paar uur voor raadsvergaderings beskikbaar gestel word. Dit laat min tyd om insette van inwoners te verkry en hul belange behoorlik in die raad te verteenwoordig. Die tweede belangrike rol van ‘n raadslid is om as tussenganger tussen die munisipaliteit, amptenary en inwoners op te tree. Ongelukkig, as gevolg van die wanfunksionering van die munisipaliteit, word raadslede dikwels oorweldig met versoeke en oproepe, wat dit moeilik maak om hul kernpligte doeltreffend uit te voer. Met 67 raadslede in die stadsraad is dit ‘n uitdaging om in alle gemeenskappe se behoeftes te voorsien. Die Verantwoordelikheid van ‘n Raadslid ‘n Raadslid dien almal in die gemeenskap, ongeag hul sosio-ekonomiese status, velkleur of politieke affiliasie. Dit is belangrik om te verstaan dat hulle daar is om elke inwoner van hul wyk te verteenwoordig en nie net diegene wat vir hulle gestem het nie. Hulle het ‘n plig om inklusief te wees en ‘n omgewing te skep waarin almal gehoor word en gelyke toegang tot dienste het. Gemeenskapsdeelname en Politieke Betrokkenheid Die gemeenskap kan deel word deur raadsvergaderings by te woon en eerstehands te sien wat daar bespreek word. Inwoners word ook aangemoedig om by ‘n politieke party van hul keuse aan te sluit, of dit nou DA, ANC, VF of EFF is—die belangrikste is om betrokke te wees en ‘n rol te speel tussen verkiesings deur deelname aan gemeenskapsinisiatiewe en beleidsbeïnvloeding. Daarbenewens kan inwoners ook munisipale openbare vergaderings bywoon om ‘n beter begrip te kry van hoe besluite geneem word en hoe hulle hul stem kan laat hoor. Waar Kan Inwoners Probleme Rapporteer? Inwoners kan hul wyke se raadslede se nommers op The Go-To Guy webblad vind of deur Google te soek watter wyk hulle behoort. Baie wyke in Potchefstroom het WhatsApp-groepe waar inwoners kan aansluit om inligting oor hul gemeenskap te ontvang en probleme te rapporteer. Kliek hier vir die JB Marks Blad op The Go-To Guy. Gemeenskapsbetrokkenheid en Oplossings Raadslede het ook die belangrikheid van gemeenskapsbetrokkenheid beklemtoon. In sekere wyke is besighede bereid om te help met die herstel van slaggate en ander infrastruktuurkwessies, terwyl ander wyke min hulpbronne het en inwoners nie altyd die finansiële vermoë het om self probleme aan te spreek nie. Klopper beklemtoon dat mense dikwels nie bereid is om iets te doen totdat die probleem hul direk raak nie. Hy moedig inwoners aan om ‘n verskil te maak deur ‘n klein skenking te maak of deur ‘n paar ure per week te bestee aan eenvoudige gemeenskapsprojekte soos grasperke sny, verfwerk of straatligte herstel. Sy filosofie vir sy wyk is vervat in sy leuse: “Be part of the solution, not the problem. #TogetherWeCan”. Dit is ‘n kragtige oproep vir mense om saam te staan en aktief betrokke te raak in die verbetering van hul gemeenskap. Die Uitvoering van Versoeke en Munisipale Dienste Een van die grootste uitdagings is nie die rapporteer van probleme nie, maar eerder om seker te maak dat die probleme daadwerklik aangespreek word. Hodgson verduidelik dat waterlekkasies dikwels vinnig herstel word, maar dat slaggate ‘n groter uitdaging is, aangesien die span klein is en slegs gedurende sekere ure kan werk. Raadslede het nie die mag om direk by departemente in te stap en eise te maak nie. Hulle dien as tussengangers en probeer om die regte mense te mobiliseer om probleme op te los. Dit is een van die redes waarom gemeenskapsbetrokkenheid so belangrik is – hoe meer mense hande vat, hoe groter die impak. The Goal: Fun, Learning, and Confidence The objective at this level isn’t winning—it’s creating a positive, confidence-building experience for every child. Games are short (5–7 minutes per half), with teams rotating to ensure all players get equal time on the field. Even though it’s tag rugby, some children instinctively want contact, often diving for a tag or trying to tackle. Coaches gently reinforce the rules and redirect their energy. “There’s always that one kid who wants to tackle—so we make it a learning moment. Because next year, they’ll transition into contact rugby anyway.” Community Spirit and Camaraderie Events like the rugby day at O’Lea Park or the Orifal Day in Viljoenskroon bring together schools from across Potchefstroom and surrounding towns like Klerksdorp and Zanddrift. These aren’t formal competitions, but rather opportunities for kids to play, parents to cheer, and communities to connect. “Seeing 80 barefoot kids on a frosty field at 7am… it reminds you why you do this.” Welpie rugby is also a gateway to future stars, helping children learn teamwork, movement, discipline, and focus—skills that stick with them even if they never play contact rugby later in life. Developing Potential at Grassroots Level One of the most rewarding parts of coaching, Bert says, is watching the development unfold. “Some of these kids couldn’t catch a ball in February… by June, they’re passing, running, and smiling like champions.” Even if some players only bloom later in high school or beyond, early exposure to core rugby skills builds confidence and lays the foundation for growth, both on and off the field.
