Ms. Brandt concluded 42 years of service as Assistant Librarian, while Ms. Mokwena retired after 45 years as Librarian. Both women were recognized for their unwavering dedication to the Potchefstroom Town Library under the Department of Sport, Art, and Culture. Colleagues and community members praised their honesty, passion, and commitment, noting that their legacy will remain a cornerstone of the institution. Promoting a Culture of Reading On 22 August, learners from primary schools in Potchefstroom and Ventersdorp gathered at the library to take part in a reading competition aimed at encouraging a love for books and strengthening literacy skills. The event highlighted the importance of reading as a foundation for learning and personal growth, while also giving children the opportunity to showcase their talents in a supportive environment. NWU opened their Varsity Netball campaign with an emphatic 63–29 victory over debutants Varsity College, laying down an early marker in this year’s competition. The Eagles wasted no time asserting dominance, moving the ball across the court with pace and accuracy. Their fast tempo proved overwhelming in the first quarter, racing to an 18–5 lead. Despite their efforts, NWU’s experience and clinical finishing kept them firmly in control. By halftime, the Eagles had doubled their opponents’ tally, leading 32–14. Eagles Maintain Control The Comets fought hard in the third quarter, adding nine goals to their scoreline. However, handling errors and costly penalties hampered any real chance of closing the gap. NWU capitalized on the mistakes, rotating smoothly through their squad and stretching the margin to 47–23 at the end of the quarter. Closing Out in Style NWU’s defensive unit tightened further in the final quarter, shutting down Varsity College’s attacks and sealing a comprehensive victory. For the newcomers, it was a tough initiation into Varsity Netball, while the Eagles celebrated a powerful start to their campaign. The North-West Youth Ballet will present Swan Lake, Tchaikovsky’s classic ballet, at the Sanlam Auditorium, North-West University, on 11 and 12 September 2025. The production will feature dancers of all ages, with the central roles of Prince Siegfried and Odette performed by professional dancers from Joburg Ballet. The Story Swan Lake is one of the most performed ballets worldwide, telling the tale of Prince Siegfried and Odette, a princess cursed by the sorcerer Von Rothbart. Siegfried swears eternal love to Odette, not knowing the curse stands firmly in his way. The ballet mixes themes of love, deception, and sacrifice with choreography that has kept audiences captivated for generations. Potchefstroom’s own Santi Britz  has been named one of the top 50 finalists  for Voelgoed Media’s Inspirasievrou 2025  award, a recognition that honours extraordinary women across South Africa who make a significant difference in the lives of others. A journey that shaped a mission Originally from Johannesburg, Britz has lived in Potchefstroom for 24 years. In 2009 she experienced the trauma of rape, followed by a court case that led to the conviction and life sentence of her attacker. The experience led her to dedicate her life to supporting survivors of gender-based violence, creating safe spaces for healing, and building structures of support where they were lacking. The founding of iDUC In the aftermath of her personal ordeal, Britz was encouraged by a symbolic gesture of kindness that would later inspire the creation of iDUC (Initiative for Dedicated Upliftment and Care) . Soon after, she was approached to help a traumatised child who had witnessed sexual violence. A small act of comfort helped the child begin her own journey of recovery, which highlighted the need for an organisation focused on empowerment, awareness, and care. Over the years, iDUC has grown into a multifaceted support network. The organisation provides assistance to victims of abuse, partners with crisis centres, drives awareness campaigns aimed at men, and runs gender-based violence programmes at universities. It also works in collaboration with Athletics South Africa to safeguard athletes against abuse. Britz’s selection as one of the top 50 candidates underscores her impact not only in Potchefstroom but also nationally, where her advocacy and work through iDUC have reached thousands. The Boere Boss Plaas Drags is lining up another big one, and this year’s headline act will be Jan Jan Jan with Kwagga. The show is set for 27 September 2025 at Boere Boss, Plaas Jersey, Vierfontein (between Orkney and Bothaville). The music kicks off at 20h00, but not before the bakkies have had their chance to prove themselves on the track.
