Electric Atmosphere at Kick-Off The NWU Mahikeng Stadium was alive with energy as the NWU Eagles took to the field against perennial challengers, UP-Tuks. Fans packed the stands, waving purple banners and singing from the opening whistle. Among the players leading the Eagles’ charge was first-year BA Humanities student, Mlamleli Kokela , who balanced his defensive responsibilities with bursts of attacking play. His efforts reflected the determination of a side eager to claim all three points at home. Adding to the excitement, the clash was broadcast live on DStv SuperSport , bringing Varsity Football action from Mahikeng to audiences across the country. First Half: Intensity Without Goals From the opening minutes, both teams pressed high and moved the ball with relentless pace. Every tackle was cheered, every pass contested, and while the Eagles pushed forward with energy, Tuks’ compact defensive line held firm. Kokela’s anticipation in midfield cut out dangerous moves, while the Eagles’ front line carved out chances, but neither side found the breakthrough. Yesterday, the Carletonville Civic Centre hosted the much-anticipated State of the City Address 2025 (SOCA) , delivered by Executive Mayor Nozuko Best. The address reflected on the municipality’s challenges and progress while laying out a roadmap for Merafong’s future under the banner of Vision 2035 . Key themes included financial recovery, improved service delivery, youth empowerment, and long-term infrastructure renewal. Governance & Municipal Context Merafong City Local Municipality, which covers Carletonville, Fochville, Khutsong and surrounding areas, has been operating under a Section 154 provincial intervention  to strengthen governance and service delivery. In her address, Mayor Best acknowledged this oversight but stressed that recent reforms had begun to stabilise municipal operations, restoring confidence in the institution’s capacity to manage its own affairs. Financial Recovery & Municipal Turnaround A major highlight of the SOCA was Merafong’s financial recovery plan. Mayor Best reported that revenue collection had improved , debt was being reduced, and municipal accounts were on a stronger footing. These efforts, she noted, provided the foundation to channel more funds into essential services and infrastructure. The municipality also confirmed its participation in Gauteng CoGTA’s 10-point turnaround strategy , which aims to secure long-term fiscal health, strengthen smart metering systems, and reinforce governance through better accountability. Running from 13 August to 26 September 2025, the exhibition explores themes of feminine duality, ancestral wisdom, and corporeal transformation. The showcase is curated by Joy Dayile and co-curated by Sandro Trapani. Concept and Inspiration The exhibition draws inspiration from the Roman goddesses Flora and Venus. Flora, goddess of spring, embodies growth, renewal, and cycles of vitality, while Venus represents love, beauty, agency, and transformation. Rather than existing in opposition, these archetypes are presented in harmony, weaving together myth, memory, and identity. Artistic Narrative Through textile art and storytelling, the exhibition stages the interplay of softness and strength, rootedness and volatility, nourishment and allure. Weaving serves as both medium and metaphor, symbolising connection across generations and the tension between delicacy and resilience. Central to the display is the exploration of the feminine body in its biological, emotional, and social dimensions. Philosophical Context The exhibition engages with reflections from voices such as Simone de Beauvoir, presenting womanhood as paradoxical, celebrated yet scrutinised, empowered yet policed. A delegation from the North West University, led by principal and vice-chancellor Prof Bismark Tyobeka, visited Botswana from 11 to 12 August. The visit aimed to build academic partnerships, strengthen regional cooperation, and explore opportunities for collaboration between institutions in South Africa and Botswana. The delegation also held discussions with the Acting Minister of Lands and Agriculture, Dr Edwin Dikoloti, and the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of International Relations, Dimpho Mogami. Engagements extended to Botswana’s higher education sector, where meetings took place with Botho University and the Botswana University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (BUAN). The Potchefstroom Service Centre recently hosted its Welwees Basaar, drawing a large number of visitors and creating a vibrant atmosphere of community spirit. The event, which concluded at 13:00, was open to the public and featured a variety of stalls, services, and entertainment designed to highlight wellness, health, and the importance of supporting older members of the community. Van rioolprobleme en kragonderbrekings tot nooddienste en gesondheidsgroep-inligting is daar breedvoerig oor verskeie sake gekommunikeer. Hierdie opsomming gee ’n oorsig van die belangrikste gesprekke wat tussen 15 en 21 Augustus 2025  plaasgevind het. Raadslid André Klopper het bevestig dat munisipale pogings om die probleem op te los, misluk het weens gebrekkige toerusting . ’n Privaat kontrakteur is glo gekontak, maar terugvoer was steeds uitstaande teen die naweek. Op 17 Augustus het Klopper ’n formele skrywe aan die Munisipale Bestuurder  gerig waarin hy dringende optrede en langtermynbeplanning geëis het. Hy noem die toestand ’n volskaalse gesondheidskrisis  wat wetlike optrede kan regverdig indien geen oplossing volg nie. 🔥 Industriële Brand en Ingryping Op 19 Augustus om 23:40  het ’n groot brand uitgebreek in Pietersenstraat, Industria . Die brand het ontstaan in een winkel en vinnig versprei na aangrensende strukture. Twee winkels is vernietig, vier voertuie het uitgebrand, en ’n derde winkel se vensters het gebars. Die brandweer en SAPD was vinnig op die toneel. Die oorsaak blyk ’n elektriese fout te wees. 🛣️ Padongelukke en Vertraging Twee belangrike padinsidente is aangemeld: 15 Augustus : ’n Kop-aan-kop botsing op Parysweg naby Buffelshoek-polisiestasie. Alle nooddienste het gereageer en die toneel is teen 17:22 skoongemaak. 17 Augustus : ’n Ongeluk op die hoek van Albert Lethuli en Ventersdorpweg (R53). Alle dienste was op die toneel. Motoriste is gevra om hierdie areas te vermy tydens herstelwerk. ⚡ Kragonderbrekings en Kabelherstel Verskeie onderbrekings is deur die week gerapporteer in: Smitstraat Rivierstraat  (waar kabelvervanging plaasgevind het) Essenhout en Uitsigstrate  – herstelwerk was reeds aan die gang op 20 Augustus, volgens terugvoer van raadslid Heinricha Hodgson. Miederpark  – gebruikers het laat weet van moontlike onderbrekings, maar geen bevestigde oorsaak was teen druktyd beskikbaar nie. 💧 Waterlekke ’n Waterlek in Hoffmanstraat  voor Caput Manskoshuis is weer aangemeld, met water wat in die stormwaterstelsel afloop. ’n Volgende opdrag is uitgestuur om dit weer onder die munisipaliteit se aandag te bring. 🕵️ Verdagte Aktiwiteit ’n Waarskuwing is gedeel op 17 Augustus  oor ’n verdagte persoon in Beyers Naudé 289  – beskryf as ’n man met ’n grinder in die hand, wat glo werk gesoek het maar deur bure as 'n moontlike indringer beskou is. Dit is positief ontvang deur inwoners wat meer oor plaaslike noodhulp wou leer. 📍 Slotgedagtes Dié week se aktiwiteite wys weer dat Potchefstroom se gemeenskap konstant moet aanpas by krisisse, van gesondheid en brand tot riool en krag. Maar dit wys ook hoe betrokke, waaksaam en vasberade inwoners en wyksraadslede is om aandag te bring waar nodig.
