Image: Huis Eikelaan In this article, we’ll explore Huis Eikelaan’s background, the range of services on offer, everyday life for its residents, its ties to the local community, and ways neighbours can lend their support. Origins and Oversight Huis Eikelaan began as a charitable outreach project under the Gereformeerde Kerke in Potchefstroom , reflecting the church’s commitment to “loving one another” through practical service huiseikelaan.co.za . Over time, it has matured into a professionally managed residential home, staffed by qualified caregivers and nurses. While its Christian roots inform the centre’s spirit of compassion and hospitality, residents of all backgrounds are welcome, and care is administered without discrimination. Image: Huis Eikelaan Core Services and Amenities Secure, Comfortable Accommodation Residents choose from private or shared rooms , all equipped with emergency call buttons and designed for safety and comfort. Ground-level living and wheelchair-accessible entrances ensure mobility for those with limited physical abilities. 24-Hour Nursing Care A team of professional nurses and caregivers are on duty round-the-clock, providing: Assistance with daily living activities (bathing, dressing, medication administration) Regular health monitoring (blood pressure, glucose checks) Coordination of external medical appointments This frail-care capability means residents with chronic conditions or mobility challenges can live with confidence, knowing help is always at hand. Image: Huis Eikelaan Nutritious Meals and Dietary Support Three balanced meals are prepared on site each day, tailored to the dietary needs of older adults. Special menus accommodate conditions such as diabetes or hypertension. Mealtime doubles as a social gathering, where residents share conversation and companionship around the dining table. Housekeeping and Laundry Keeping living spaces hygienic and orderly, the facility provides regular cleaning and laundry services. Fresh linens and personal laundry are handled weekly (or more often, if needed), reducing physical strain on residents. Image: Huis Eikelaan Social and Recreational Activities To combat loneliness and keep minds active, Huis Eikelaan organizes: Light exercise and gentle stretching classes Card games, bingo, and simple board games Arts and crafts workshops Birthday and holiday celebrations Group activities foster friendships, mental stimulation, and a sense of belonging. Spiritual Care and Fellowship Reflecting its Reformed Church heritage, the home hosts weekly devotional gatherings and invites local ministers for prayer services and hymn singing. These moments of spiritual reflection offer comfort and community for residents of faith, while others may simply enjoy the uplifting songs and fellowship. Daily Life and Resident Experiences Life at Huis Eikelaan revolves around a balanced routine of care, activity, and rest. Mornings often begin with gentle exercises or a devotional reading, followed by a hearty breakfast. Mid-day might include arts and crafts or a communal walk in the garden. Afternoons often feature social games or a musical performance by visiting school choirs. Evenings are a quieter time, perhaps a shared tea, a movie screening, or one-on-one visits from family. Image: Huis Eikelaan Community Partnerships and Support Huis Eikelaan relies on strong ties with Potchefstroom’s local organisations: Volunteer Visits: Schools, youth groups, and church members regularly host tea-time conversations, sing-along sessions, or pet therapy visits that brighten residents’ days. Donations and Sponsorships: Local businesses sometimes provide essentials—from toiletries and blankets to books and puzzles—to supplement the home’s resources. Health Outreach: Partnerships with nearby clinics enable periodic on-site health screenings and wellness talks, ensuring residents receive preventive care without leaving the home. These collaborations not only enhance services but also remind seniors they remain cherished members of the broader community. Challenges and Future Outlook Like many elder-care facilities, Huis Eikelaan navigates cost pressures (rising food, utility, and staffing expenses) and the national shortage of trained caregivers . To stay sustainable, the home balances reasonable fees with fundraising drives and seeks government or NGO grants where possible. Ongoing staff training and well-being initiatives help retain the caregivers who form the heart of its operations. Looking ahead, opportunities include expanding day-care services for local seniors who live at home, implementing simple assistive technologies (e.g., remote monitoring), and deepening volunteer programs to foster intergenerational bonds. Image: Huis Eikelaan How to Get Involved Potchefstroom residents eager to support Huis Eikelaan can: Volunteer Time: Spend an hour chatting over tea, leading a crafts session, or accompanying residents on short walks. Donate Goods: Contribute non-perishable foods, toiletries, warm blankets, or mobility aids. Sponsor an Activity: Provide materials for art workshops, board games, or small celebrations. Raise Awareness: Share stories of Huis Eikelaan’s care and needs on social media or at community gatherings. Every act of generosity, big or small, directly enriches the lives of the home’s residents. Huis Eikelaan exemplifies how faith-inspired values and professional care can combine to create a warm, dignified environment for older adults. With its safe accommodation, dedicated nursing staff, balanced activities, and strong community partnerships, the home ensures that Potchefstroom’s seniors live their later years with respect, purpose, and companionship. In a world that often overlooks its elders, Huis Eikelaan stands as a shining reminder that every life, at every age, deserves to be valued. #TheGoToGuy #potchefstroom #potchgazette #stroomstories #oldagehomes #stroomcares

- Accidents and Ambulance Costs: What Happens If You Don’t Have Medical Aid?
Medical emergencies can happen in an instant, on the road, at home, or at work. In such moments, the focus is on getting help as quickly as possible. But in Potchefstroom, as in many towns across South Africa, not having medical aid can complicate matters when it comes to emergency ambulance services. For thousands of residents, the question remains: what really happens if you need urgent care and you’re uninsured? Image: Mooirivier Beskerming Emergency Medical Response in Potchefstroom Potchefstroom has access to both public and private emergency medical services. Government ambulances, run through provincial health services, are available at no direct cost to the patient. However, demand often exceeds capacity, which can lead to delays in response times, especially during peak hours or in high-incident zones like the N12 highway or the rural outskirts of town. Private ambulance services, operating in and around Potchefstroom, typically provide faster response, advanced life support, and more direct routing to appropriate facilities. However, these services come with upfront costs, especially for individuals who are not members of a medical aid scheme or ambulance cover plan. The Cost Factor: Without Medical Aid Without medical aid, calling a private ambulance usually means paying out of pocket. Depending on the distance traveled and the level of care provided, emergency transport costs can range from R1,500 to R5,000 or more. If advanced life support or specialized equipment is needed, the fees may increase accordingly. In cases where a patient is unconscious or unable to provide consent, ambulance providers may try to reach a family member to approve or guarantee payment. Some may not dispatch a vehicle until a payment arrangement is confirmed, leading to delays that could prove dangerous in time-sensitive emergencies. Limited Public Resources and Their Impact In Potchefstroom, the demand on public emergency services often outpaces supply. Factors such as load shedding, water supply disruptions, or weekend traffic incidents can further strain response teams. While local community forums and neighborhood watch groups sometimes step in to help coordinate support, these efforts cannot replace the reliability of structured emergency transport. Alternatives to Full Medical Aid Many residents, students, informal workers, and pensioners in particular, do not have access to full medical aid. Traditional plans remain unaffordable for a large portion of the population. However, alternative options exist that offer more targeted forms of protection. Ambulance-only cover or emergency transport membership plans are designed for those who want to ensure help will arrive when needed, without having to commit to full health insurance. These plans do not cover hospital stays or doctor visits, but they offer peace of mind when every second counts. A Local Option: Mooirivier Emergency Med (MEM) For uninsured individuals in Potchefstroom, Mooirivier Emergency Med (MEM) offers a basic, locally available solution. MEM is an ambulance insurance plan that covers the cost of emergency transport at the following rates: R95 per main member/month R20 per dependent/month Includes FREE access to the Mooirivier Beskerming emergency app The mobile app connects members directly to emergency response teams at the tap of a button, eliminating the need for upfront cash or complicated approval processes. The service operates in Potchefstroom and surrounding districts, providing support to local residents who may otherwise be financially unprepared for emergency care. While MEM is not a replacement for full medical aid , it does help bridge a critical gap. In a town where delayed access to ambulance services can have serious consequences, such a plan provides a practical and affordable backup. Planning Ahead Saves Lives In a medical emergency, fast access to care can be the difference between life and death. For Potchefstroom residents without medical aid, understanding the limitations of public services and the costs of private transport is essential. Affordable ambulance cover options like Mooirivier Emergency Med offer a way to prepare without taking on the financial burden of full insurance. Whether through government systems, community support, or local private plans, it’s important for families and individuals to have a plan in place before the unexpected happens. #TheGoToGuy #potchefstroom #potchgazette #stroomstories #medical #communitityupdate

- Potchefstroom Academy Gears Up for Next Makeup Short Course - 28 July
Brushes Out and Blenders Ready: It’s That Time Again SAAHST College in Potchefstroom is set to host its next Makeup Artistry Short Course from 28 to 31 July 2025. Whether you’re a beginner, a hair stylist wanting to upskill, or just tired of Googling “how to blend concealer properly,” this one’s for you. No need to pretend contouring is just “drawing on your face with brown stuff” anymore. The course promises to cover bridal, event, day, evening and fantasy makeup, which presumably includes at least one unicorn-inspired look. Plus, yes, contouring will be tackled properly, so you can finally put those cheekbones to work. The Details Without the Frills The four-day course will be held at the college’s campus at 59 Dr James Moroka Avenue, right there in Potch. Unfortunately, ticket pricing is still as mysterious as a smoky eye gone wrong, so your best bet is to reach out directly. Pre-booking is essential, which means no pulling in last minute with your foundation bag and dreams in hand. To secure your spot, email: shortcourses@saahst.co.za , telephone (if you like it old school): 018- -294-9000 or WhatsApp them at 064-624-1548. Yes, WhatsApp, very lekker. For more updates, keep an eye on their social media, or better yet, sign up and join the fun in person.
- Antique Market Returns to Potchefstroom this Spring - 6 September
The ever-popular Antique Market is back in Potchefstroom on Saturday, 6 September 2025, promising a full day of nostalgic browsing, curious finds, and well-priced treasures. What to Expect Hosted at Van Rooyen Hall, right on Piet Bosman Street, this one-day event will run from 08:00 to 15:00. With both indoor and outdoor stalls, visitors can expect a wide variety of vintage and antique goods, from fine porcelain, silverware, and books, to bric-a-brac, old cabinets, and even the odd vintage car (assuming someone manages to roll one in without losing a wheel). Whether you're a seasoned collector, a casual browser, or just there for the retro vibes, there'll be something with a little dust and a lot of charm waiting for you. Entry Fee? Nope. In case you were wondering, entry is completely free. So you can keep your cash for that ceramic cat you didn’t know you needed until you locked eyes with it. Want to Sell Your Stuff? If you’ve got antiques hiding in the garage, maybe an old gramophone, some inherited silverware, or a questionable oil painting of a man and his dog, you can book a stall and share your gems with others. Who knows? That weird thing in the corner might be someone else’s dream find. To book a stall, give Tania a shout on 079-918-2092. She's handling the logistics and will likely be able to tell you whether that chipped plate from your ouma’s cupboard is worth dusting off. Details at a Glance Date: Saturday, 6 September 2025 Time: 08:00–15:00 Venue: Van Rooyen Hall, Piet Bosman Street, Potchefstroom Entry: Free Stalls: Indoor and Outdoor Contact for stalls: Tania – 079-918-2092 Event Facebook page: Antiekmark Potchefstroom There won’t be a music festival, but you’ll find plenty of charm in the clink of teacups and the hum of friendly bargain banter. It’s a relaxed day out with a side of nostalgia, and possibly a flamingo. If nothing else, come for the people-watching and the chance to say “they don’t make them like this anymore” at least three times.

These churches are spread throughout the city and townships such as Ikageng and Promosa. Notable denominations and churches include: Dutch Reformed (NG Kerk) NG Mooi Rivier NG Potchefstroom-Noord NG Grimbeekpark NG Die Bult Reformed Churches in South Africa (Gereformeerde Kerk - GK) GK Potchefstroom (Central) GK Die Bult GK Potchefstroom-Oos GK Promosa Hervormde Kerk (NHK) NHK Moedergemeente (Oldest church building north of the Vaal River) NHK Noord, Suid, Grimbeekpark, Studentegemeente Anglican Church St. Mary’s Anglican Church Catholic Church St. Michael’s Catholic Church (town) St. Ephraim’s Catholic Church (Ikageng) Methodist Church Potchefstroom Methodist Church (town) Ikageng Methodist Society Lutheran Church Bethel Lutheran Church (Ikageng) Evangelical Lutheran Church Presbyterian Church Trinity Presbyterian Church Pentecostal and Charismatic Churches Every Nation Faith City CRC Potchefstroom Shofar Christian Church Apostolic Faith Mission (AFM) – Central, Miederpark, Emmanuel, House of Fullness Full Gospel Church (Volle Evangelie Kerk) Christ Embassy (multiple locations) Deo Gloria Ministries Gateway Kingdom Life Church Kandelaar Church Heritage Baptist Church Potchefstroom Bible Baptist Church Seven Pillars Church Jesus Loves You Ministries African-Initiated Churches Zion Christian Church (ZCC) Nazareth Baptist Church (Shembe) Old Apostolic Church New Apostolic Church Islam Potchefstroom’s Muslim population is served by a few well-established mosques. Most mosques are located in town and in the Mohadin suburb, historically home to a large Indian-heritage Muslim community. Mosques in Potchefstroom: Masjid Sirajul Islam (Town Mosque – Owen Avenue) Mohadin Masjid (Masjid Ansārul Islām) – Sooliman/Shahaboodin Street Noori Islamic Centre – 82 Wolmarans Street (NWU also offers prayer space for Muslim students) Judaism Though the local Jewish community has declined over the years, it once played an important role in the city's history. Today, the synagogue is a heritage site and a symbol of Jewish legacy in Potchefstroom. Former Potchefstroom Synagogue – Sol Plaatjie Avenue (est. 1920, now not in use for services) Hinduism There is no formal Hindu temple in Potchefstroom. Hindu residents usually observe rituals privately or travel to nearby cities like Johannesburg or Rustenburg for temple worship and festivals. Informal home gatherings and regional temple visits Buddhism and Eastern Traditions Potchefstroom does not have any formal Buddhist temples or meditation centers, but some residents engage with online teachings or travel to centers in Gauteng. No formal Buddhist temple present in Potchefstroom Other Faiths Bahá’í Faith No fixed place of worship; meetings usually take place in private homes. Jehovah’s Witnesses Kingdom Hall – Sizanani Street, Ikageng Latter-day Saints (Mormon Church) Meetinghouse – 13 Zinn Street, Ikageng Potchefstroom’s spiritual landscape is a testament to South Africa’s religious diversity and freedom. While Christianity remains the dominant faith, the presence of mosques, a synagogue, and informal gatherings for other faiths illustrates the inclusive and evolving nature of religious life in the city. As we begin exploring each place of worship in more depth, one thing is clear: faith, in all its forms, continues to shape Potchefstroom’s identity, community spirit, and cultural heritage. Let’s journey together through each of these places in the coming weeks, one story, one congregation, one shared space at a time. #TheGoToGuy #Potchefstroom #potchagzette #stroomstories #religion #spiritualtalk
