  • The Go-To Guy’s Job Board: Potchefstroom’s Dynamic Platform Connecting Employers and Local Talent

In a vibrant community like Potchefstroom, matching local talent with local job opportunities can be a game-changer. The Go-To Guy’s Job Board has emerged as the dynamic platform making this connection possible, a user-friendly hub where Potchefstroom-based employers and job seekers come together. Part of The Go-To Guy’s broad suite of community offerings, the Job Board bridges the gap between businesses and candidates in our town, all while maintaining an inviting yet professional tone that reflects Potchefstroom’s spirit. Image: The Go-To Guy Creations From small startups to established firms, and from students seeking part-time gigs to seasoned professionals, this service caters to everyone. It’s about more than just job listings, it’s about community growth, local empowerment, and getting Potchefstroom working together. A Dynamic Platform for the Potchefstroom Job Market The Go-To Guy’s Job Board isn’t a static classifieds page, it’s a vibrant, regularly updated platform that serves the full spectrum of Potchefstroom’s job market. It features specialized job boards for various niches, from general employment to student jobs, domestic work, au pair positions, and more, ensuring no local talent goes unnoticed or unutilized. Employers across Potchefstroom (and even nearby areas) can post their openings, and job seekers can find opportunities close to home, as the service covers Potchefstroom and its surrounding communities. By focusing on local connections, each job filled through the platform sends a positive ripple through the community, strengthening the local economy and uplifting individuals through meaningful employment. In other words, every “job listing filled” and every local hire made via the Job Board “feeds back into our community, setting off a ripple effect of economic growth”. This dynamic, hyper-local approach helps Potchefstroom’s businesses grow while keeping talent right here in our region. User-Friendly Design with Both Job Seekers and Employers in Mind One of the first things you’ll notice is how user-friendly the Job Board is for everyone involved. It’s an intuitive layout that immediately directs you to what you need, whether that’s browsing open positions or posting a new job. Everything about the interface is designed to be straight forward and welcoming, so you spend less time figuring out the site and more time finding the right opportunities. Job seekers benefit from an especially smooth experience. Under the “View Jobs” section, you can instantly view all available jobs or register your CV online in the site’s database so that potential employers can find you. Job listings are neatly categorized by type (General jobs, Au Pair jobs, Student/Temp jobs, Domestic work, Gardening jobs, etc.), allowing you to filter opportunities that fit your needs. You can also opt into The Go-To Guy’s job network on social media: a dedicated Facebook group and WhatsApp channel keep you updated on new vacancies in real time. This means you won’t miss out on postings, the latest job ads can pop up in your feed or messages as soon as they’re listed. It’s all designed with a friendly, familiar feel that balances casual browsing with the reliability of an official job portal. Employers can then browse the database of candidate CVs on the platform, which is extremely useful if you want to proactively seek out talent who have uploaded their resumes. The Go-To Guy even offers handy tools to streamline your hiring process: you can download a ready-made interview questionnaire sheet to guide your candidate interviews, and if needed, arrange professional background checks or polygraph services, all directly through the site . These integrated extras (like the interview template and vetting services) show how the Job Board isn’t just a posting site, but a full-featured resource for making hiring easier. Local employers save time and gain confidence in their hires, all while using a site that feels approachable rather than overly technical. Benefits for Local Businesses and Employers Posting a vacancy on The Go-To Guy’s Job Board isn’t just about filling a role, it’s about tapping into Potchefstroom’s vibrant local network and receiving genuine community support. One major benefit for employers is reach: The Go-To Guy platform has a large, loyal local audience, with its main Facebook page boasting over 70,000 followers, and the website receiving around 75,000 page views per month. This means your job post gets seen by a wide pool of local talent, far more directly than if you advertised on a generic national site. Because the Job Board is locally focused, you’re likely to attract candidates who live in the area and understand the community, leading to better long-term fits and lower turnover. It’s also a cost-effective way to recruit, many traditional job boards or agencies can be expensive, whereas The Go-To Guy’s service is part of a community initiative (often at little or no cost to basic users, depending on the offering). Beyond the practical advantages of reach and cost, there’s a powerful community goodwill aspect. By hiring through a local channel, businesses are investing right back into their community. Every position filled via The Go-To Guy feeds into the local economy and helps support another household in town. In fact, the Go-To Guy team emphasizes that each successful hire can “set off a ripple effect of economic growth” in Potchefstroom. Local companies grow, new jobs get created, and more people have income to spend at other local businesses, it’s a virtuous cycle. Employers also benefit from the trust the platform has built. Job seekers know The Go-To Guy as a reputable community hub, so they approach listings with confidence that these are legitimate, worthwhile opportunities. When you post a job here, you’re not a faceless company; you’re a known quantity in a trusted local space. This often means you get enthusiastic, motivated applicants who are excited by the prospect of working for a hometown company. In short, the Job Board offers businesses a highly efficient hiring tool and  a way to engage with the community in a positive, meaningful way. Empowering Potchefstroom’s Job Seekers For individuals hunting for jobs in Potchefstroom, The Go-To Guy’s Job Board offers more than just a list of vacancies, it provides a supportive community and real visibility for your skills. Because the platform is focused on local  opportunities, you no longer have to sift through postings in far-off cities or irrelevant locations; every listing is a potential job close to home. This can greatly simplify your job search and reduce the stress of finding work in your area. By uploading your CV to the site, you’re effectively marketing yourself to local employers, even if you don’t apply to a specific ad, companies can discover your profile when they search the CV database. In fact, The Go-To Guy team regularly shines a spotlight on local talent: in weekly features, they introduce a handful of Potchefstroom job seekers and their skills to the community. This means your name and résumé could be highlighted to hundreds of readers, dramatically increasing your chances of getting noticed by the right people. It’s a unique perk you won’t find on many other job platforms, basically free publicity for job hunters! The platform’s all-digital approach also makes job hunting easier and  greener. You can apply to jobs or share your credentials online without printing a single page, a convenient and eco-friendly touch that saves you time and money on making copies of your CV. Notifications via the website or WhatsApp mean you can respond quickly to new opportunities, which is crucial in a fast-moving job market. Perhaps most importantly, finding work through a community-driven board can be a real morale booster. There’s a sense of personal connection knowing that a local business chose you  from your CV on The Go-To Guy; it reinforces that your hometown values your skills and potential. As the platform’s creators have noted, securing employment isn’t just about a paycheck, it boosts individual morale, self-esteem, and provides a sense of purpose. That supportive atmosphere can make the job search far less daunting. Instead of feeling like one anonymous applicant in a nationwide pool, you’re part of a local conversation. The Job Board encourages you to put your best foot forward, and it reassures you that the community is rooting for your success. Part of The Go-To Guy’s All-in-One Community Hub A great strength of The Go-To Guy’s Job Board is that it isn’t an isolated service, it’s deeply integrated into The Go-To Guy’s broader offerings for the community. The Go-To Guy started back in 2018 as a simple, user-friendly listing platform for local businesses (a place to quickly find a plumber, hairdresser, or restaurant in Potch). Over time, it evolved into a one-stop online hub for Potchefstroom: today our website features everything from a digital newspaper (the Potch Gazette) with local news, to video content like StroomStories (live-streamed shows highlighting local personalities), to community initiatives like StroomCares (supporting local charities and causes). There’s also a Property Board for real estate, an Events Calendar for what’s happening around town, a Business Directory for services, and more, all under The Go-To Guy umbrella. The Job Board is a key part of this mix, and its integration with these other features brings extra value to users. For example, someone visiting the site to read a Potch Gazette article or check the Events Calendar might also click over to the Job Board, meaning more eyes on the job listings than if the board stood alone. Conversely, a job seeker drawn to the site for employment might discover other useful info (news, events, etc.), enriching their connection to the community. It’s an interconnected ecosystem designed to keep locals informed and engaged on multiple fronts. The Go-To Guy team actively promotes this ecosystem on multiple channels, through the main website, active social media pages, newly formed Facebook groups for specific niches, and WhatsApp broadcast lists to keep the community informed . The Job Board doesn’t only live on the web; it’s supported by these channels (for instance, job posts are often shared via the Facebook group or Instagram, amplifying their reach). As mentioned earlier, the platform’s online presence is impressive: tens of thousands follow The Go-To Guy on social media, and collectively its content has been viewed millions of times. Any job posted on the board automatically benefits from this popularity, in essence, your job ad is plugged into a thriving local audience that’s already paying attention. And accessibility keeps improving: in May 2025, The Go-To Guy launched a brand-new mobile app for Android and iOS, giving users quicker, on-the-go access to all these services. With the app, checking the latest job vacancies or receiving notifications is easier than ever, right from your phone. This kind of integration and constant enhancement means the Job Board isn’t just a standalone webpage; it’s part of a larger, living community platform dedicated to Potchefstroom’s growth. Join Potchefstroom’s Job Board Movement Whether you’re a job seeker eager to launch your career or an employer looking for your next great hire, The Go-To Guy’s Job Board warmly invites you to participate and reap the benefits. It’s as simple as creating a profile or posting a vacancy, and you’ll immediately become part of a thriving local network where opportunities and talent meet. The tone is welcoming, the process is straightforward, and the impact is very real. By using this platform, you’re not just helping yourself, you’re contributing to a bigger cause of community growth and collaboration. As The Go-To Guy team puts it, this initiative is “not just a platform, but a mission” that resonates with the aspirations of Potchefstroom’s people. It’s a call to rally together and get our city working. When our local businesses succeed, we all  succeed, the more neighbors and friends we see employed and flourishing, the brighter our whole community’s future becomes. In the words of The Go-To Guy’s own message to Potchefstroom, when it comes to this effort of connecting people to jobs, “when one of us succeeds, we all do”. So go ahead and give the Job Board a try, post that job opening, submit your CV, or just browse the latest listings to get a feel for what’s out there. • Potch, Let's Help: Bark Fetch Park

A beloved community project is reaching out once more. Bark Fetch Park, a safe and joyful space for dogs and their humans, has already made impressive strides thanks to the generosity and involvement of volunteers and local supporters. But to bring the park to its full potential, a few essential items and services are still needed. Below is a concise breakdown of what remains on the to-do list and how anyone can get involved to help finish this community initiative. Final Fencing & Safety Needs To secure the premises and ensure the safety of both pets and people, the park still needs razor wire and poles  to properly close off the area behind the main building. In addition, there’s a need to enclose the front and sides  of the building using Smartview fencing . These additions will help prevent stray animals from entering and keep all furry visitors safe within the boundaries of the park. Tiles, Paint, and Building Essentials The interior facilities of Bark Fetch Park include two toilets and a kitchen, all of which still require tiling . Basic finishing touches like paint for the buildings  are also on the list to create a fresh, clean, and welcoming space for visitors. In terms of infrastructure, interior wooden doors  and steel doors for outside access  are needed to complete the buildings. Security Upgrades Security remains a top priority. The park team is seeking burglar-proof mesh  and security gates  for four key access doors. These additions will safeguard the property, supplies, and ensure the longevity of the facility against theft or vandalism. Landscaping & Eco-Friendly Touches Community contributions of dog-safe plants  for the perimeter and green areas inside the park would add both beauty and function. These plants will enhance the natural environment and contribute to the park’s goal of being a relaxing, eco-friendly space. In parallel, help is needed with cutting grass , applying weed and termite control , and general upkeep of the grounds to keep it pet-friendly and tidy. Irrigation Support Finally, maintaining healthy vegetation requires a working irrigation system. Irrigation supplies , particularly coupling valves and other components, are still required to support the long-term care of all plant life in the park. • Potch, Let's Help Collect-a-Can for Mandela Day: A Youth-Driven Initiative at West Acres Centre

Mandela Day, celebrated annually on 18 July, is more than just a day of remembrance, it is a global movement for positive change, inspired by Nelson Mandela’s 67 years of public service. This year, West Acres Shopping Centre is embracing the spirit of giving with a dynamic “Collect-a-Can” drive aimed at mobilizing young people to help feed a local shelter. The initiative blends civic responsibility with a touch of friendly competition, creating a meaningful way for youth to participate in Mandela Day. The Challenge: Collect to Make a Difference The “Collect-a-Can” campaign officially runs from 19 June to 17 July . During this time, young people aged 12–18  are invited to gather as many canned food items as possible. The final haul will be weighed and donated to a local shelter on Mandela Day itself, 18 July . This initiative not only supports food security efforts but also instills a sense of service in younger generations. The Prize: A Reward for Compassion and Effort While the main reward lies in the act of giving, West Acres is sweetening the deal with a competitive twist. The individual who collects the heaviest load of canned food (minimum 30kg)  will win a cash prize of R2000 , generously sponsored by West Acres. This adds an element of excitement and motivation to the noble cause, encouraging more participation and higher impact. Logistics: How and Where to Participate Participants must bring their collected cans to West Acres Centre  on 17 July before 12:00 PM . The official weigh-in will take place in front of Kryolan , ensuring transparency and fair play. It’s a one-day window that sets the stage for community involvement, public recognition, and impactful donation. One Can at a Time: The Broader Message The slogan, “Let’s make a difference, one can at a time,” echoes the core philosophy of Mandela Day, that every individual has the power to change the world for the better. By rallying local youth around a tangible, achievable goal, the Collect-a-Can campaign not only provides for those in need but also nurtures future leaders grounded in empathy and action. A Small Act, A Big Impact As Mandela Day approaches, the Collect-a-Can initiative at West Acres stands as a beacon of community-driven change. With just a few weeks to go, there’s still time for teens to rally their friends, families, and schools to join in. Whether it’s one can or a hundred, each donation counts. This Mandela Day, let’s honour Madiba’s legacy, one generous act at a time. #TheGoToGuy #potchefstroom #potchgazette #stroomstories #stroomcares #MandelaDay2025 #CollectACan #YouthForChange #OneCanAtATime

  • Planning a Toddler-Friendly Family Vacation in Potchefstroom

Planning a vacation with toddlers (around 3–5 years old) can feel like a fun adventure and a logistical challenge all at once. For families in Potchefstroom, the key is to prepare well and choose wisely. Image : The Go-To Guy Creations With a bit of planning, from what to pack to where to stay , you can ensure your little one’s holiday is safe, happy, and full of wonderful memories. Let’s explore what to consider when booking a family getaway with your toddler in tow. Pack the Essentials for Your Little Ones Packing smart can make the difference between a smooth trip and a stressful one. Here are some must-haves to bring along for your toddler: Clothing & Comfort: Pack comfy, weather-appropriate clothes, and plenty of spares (toddlers go through more outfits than you’d expect!). Layers are your friend, Potchefstroom’s days can be warm and nights cooler. Don’t forget a hat and sunscreen for those sunny outdoor playtimes. And if your child has a favorite blanket or cuddly toy, definitely bring it; familiar comfort items can work wonders in an unfamiliar room . Maintaining a loose version of their bedtime routine (PJ's, storybook, that special blankie) helps toddlers settle more easily in a new environment . Snacks & Drinks: A hungry toddler is a ticking time bomb, so pack lots of snacks for the road and the stay . Think easy, non-messy bites like fruit bars, biltong, mini crackers, or good old Ouma rusks, whatever your child loves and won’t spill everywhere . Bring a spill-proof water cup or juice box to keep them hydrated without the drips . It’s also wise to stock up on healthy snacks at your destination for the entire stay . As one savvy mom suggests, include a special “holiday treat” they don’t usually get (like mini marshmallows or gummy candies) to reward good behavior, a little bribery can go a long way ! And for the parents: don’t forget your coffee or tea fix (you’ll be up early with excited kiddos). Medical Kit: Be prepared for minor bumps or fevers by bringing a basic first aid and medicine kit . Include plasters (bandages), antiseptic cream, a thermometer, child-safe fever and pain meds (like Panado or Calpol), rehydration sachets, allergy medicine, and any vitamins or special meds your child needs. The last thing you want is to be scrambling to find an open pharmacy at 3 AM in a strange town; better to have the essentials on hand so you can handle tummy aches or scraped knees and get back to the fun. (Potchefstroom does have late-night pharmacies, but being prepared means less worry.) Toys & Entertainment: Keep your toddler happily occupied during travel and downtime. Pack a few favorite toys and some new surprises (small toys or books) to hold their attention. A tablet loaded with their favorite shows or games (with child-friendly headphones) can be a lifesaver on a long drive . Also bring low-tech options like crayons and a notebook, stickers, or a coloring book for creative play . Having a mix of entertainment options will help curb boredom whenever you need to wait (in the car, at a restaurant, etc.). Bedtime Essentials: Good sleep on holiday = happy toddler and happy parents. Bring items that make bedtime feel familiar. If your accommodation can’t provide a cot or toddler bed, consider bringing a travel cot or portable bed rail (many places do have cots available, but it’s wise to check in advance). Pack your child’s favorite bedsheet or small pillow from home so it smells familiar . A portable nightlight or even a stick-on blackout blind (or some black garbage bags and tape) can help create a dark, cozy sleep space if your child is sensitive to light at bedtime . Sticking to your usual bedtime routine, whether it’s a warm bath, a particular lullaby, or a nightly story, will help your little one unwind even in a new place. Travel Time: Short and Sweet When it comes to traveling with toddlers, shorter is better. Long, multi-hour drives or flights can be tough on 3–5 year-olds (and therefore tough on you!). If possible, choose a destination that’s a relatively short drive from home. Potchefstroom is conveniently located within a 2-hour drive of major Gauteng areas, which is manageable for most young kids if you plan it right. In fact, if you’re driving from, say, Benoni to Potchefstroom (about two hours), consider leaving around nap time so your child sleeps on the way . Timing your departure with their regular sleep schedule can make the journey much more peaceful. For any trip longer than an hour or two, plan extra stops and come prepared. Bring out the snacks and toys you packed to keep them busy in the car . Sing songs, play “I spy,” or tell stories about where you’re going. It also helps to have one adult sit in the back seat next to the child if possible, to keep them company and handle any needs. And remember, safety first: toddlers should always be in an appropriate car seat, even for short drives around town . Nothing ruins a holiday mood like an accident when kids aren’t properly secured, so double-check that car seat before you hit the road . If your family vacation involves air travel or a longer road trip, try to break up the journey. Take frequent breaks so toddlers can stretch their legs and burn off energy at a roadside park or rest area. Avoid marathon travel days, it’s better to take it slow than to have an overtired, cranky child on your hands. In summary: pick a reachable location, align travel with nap times, and keep your transit time toddler-friendly. Image : The Go-To Guy Creations Location Matters: Safety and Convenience When choosing where to vacation (and where to stay), think about location through the eyes of a parent. The ideal spot balances a safe environment, convenience, and maybe a bit of scenery for the wow factor. Here are a few location tips: Stay close to amenities. Being near shops, medical facilities and general stores is a huge plus with small children. If you run out of diapers, need extra snacks, or forget the toddler toothbrush, you’ll want a supermarket or pharmacy nearby. In Potchefstroom, for example, staying near the Mooirivier Mall or a shopping center means quick runs for milk or medicine are no hassle . Some guesthouses in town (like those in the Baillie Park or Grimbeek Park areas) even boast walking distance to shops, pharmacies, and restaurants , which can save your sanity during an unexpected toddler emergency. Think about nearby play areas. Kids need to move. Having a park, playground, or safe open space within walking distance or a short drive is a big bonus. Potchefstroom has lovely parks and the NWU Botanical Gardens, which are perfect for little ones to run and explore without a long car ride . If your accommodation is near a duck pond or dam, like the Potch Dam area, even better, toddlers love simple activities like feeding ducks and enjoying the sunshine . So when picking your accommodation’s location, check the map for any green spaces or kid-friendly attractions close by. Safety and healthcare. A beautiful rural farmhouse 20 km out of town can be a peaceful retreat, but consider how far you’d be from help if you needed it. With toddlers, fevers and bumps can strike at any time. If you opt for a more remote, scenic spot outside Potch, ensure it’s not too  far from emergency services or at least that you know the route to the nearest clinic . Likewise, when you arrive at any accommodation, do a quick childproofing scan of the place. Move breakable decor out of reach, check that doors and windows lock securely, and note any hazards like unfenced pools or stairs . You can even pack a couple of outlet covers or use tape over plug points as a temporary fix . Taking five minutes to toddler-proof your space will let you relax much more during the holiday. Scenic vs. central. There’s often a trade-off between being in a quiet, scenic spot and being in the heart of town. A country lodge by the Mooi River might offer tranquil nature and space for kids to run, while an in-town apartment keeps you close to conveniences . Decide what matters more for your family’s style, or find a happy medium. For instance, you might stay on the outskirts of Potchefstroom where it feels rural, but still be only 5-10 minutes from shops. Many families find that being in a “best of both worlds” location, quiet and natural, yet not isolated, works perfectly . Image : The Go-To Guy Creations Family-Friendly Accommodation Options in Potchefstroom One of the final (and most important) pieces of your vacation puzzle is choosing the right accommodation. Potchefstroom has a range of options, from modern apartments to rustic lodges. Here’s a look at the main types of accommodation available – and how each might suit a family with a toddler: All-Inclusive Resorts: All-inclusive stays (where your accommodation, meals, and often activities are bundled together) can be a stress-free choice for families. The good news is you won’t have to worry about cooking or where to eat, it’s all provided, so you can focus on playtime. Many all-inclusive or resort-style accommodations also have on-site entertainment like kiddie pools or playgrounds. For example, a family resort near Potchefstroom boasts multiple pools (including a heated indoor pool), water slides, trampolines and play parks, basically a children’s paradise where you hardly need to leave the property . This setup is great for keeping toddlers constantly entertained in a safe area. The possible downside in a small city like Potch is that fully all-inclusive resorts are not very common right in town (Potchefstroom is more known for self-catering guesthouses). If you do find one or are open to nearby resort estates, just ensure the food options suit your little one’s tastes (most will have child-friendly choices, but toddlers can be picky!). Overall, all-inclusives are ideal if you want to minimize planning and enjoy a “park and relax” kind of holiday. Self-Catering Homes & Apartments: Self-catering is hugely popular with families, and for good reason. Having your own kitchen and living space makes life with a toddler so much easier. You can prepare your child’s meals or heat up milk on your own schedule, without always eating out . Plus, separate bedrooms mean you can tuck the kids into bed early and still stay up a bit later in the lounge or on the patio. In Potchefstroom, you’ll find plenty of self-catering options, from apartments in town to cottages on the outskirts. An in-town apartment (say near the university or CBD) keeps you close to shops and parks , whereas a cottage or guest farm on the edge of town gives you more space and privacy. Many holiday homes and guest farm stays offer multiple bedrooms and large gardens, which are perfect for toddlers to run around in and burn energy . For example, one guest farm just outside Potch has family units with access to a big communal garden and even a braai area, giving you the best of both worlds: room for kids to play plus a relaxing country atmosphere . Self-catering does mean you’ll be cooking or fixing breakfast yourself at times, but it’s a small trade-off for the flexibility (and it can be budget-friendly, too). Tip: Look for family-friendly amenities like a washing machine (toddlers = lots of laundry!) or ask if they have a high chair or crib available so you can pack a little lighter. Camping & Caravan Parks: If you’re an outdoorsy family, camping might be on your radar. Potchefstroom’s surroundings include nature reserves and riverside resorts where you can camp or caravan under the stars. Toddlers often love the novelty of camping; all that space to run, sticks and bugs to discover, and the adventure of sleeping in a tent. There are camping sites near Potch (like around Boskop Dam or the Vaal River) that cater to families with young kids, offering amenities such as kid-friendly pools and playgrounds on site . Staying at a place like this can feel a bit like an all-inclusive in nature, days filled with simple outdoor fun. However, camping with a 3–5 year old does require extra preparation. Image : The Go-To Guy Creations You’ll need more gear - from a travel cot or air mattress and bedding to portable lights, mosquito repellent, and plenty of extra clothes for when they inevitably get dirty. Make sure the campsite has clean bathrooms (bonus if there are family bathrooms or baby-changing facilities) and be vigilant about safety; never leave a toddler unattended near water, and keep an eye around campfires or braai areas. Camping can be incredibly rewarding as a family vacation, just plan cautiously and maybe choose a site that offers chalets or “camping pods” if full tenting feels daunting. It’s about finding the level of outdoor experience that you’re comfortable with, while giving your child a taste of nature’s wonder. Hotels and Guesthouses: Traditional hotels or B&B-style guesthouses are also an option in Potchefstroom. Many hotels now cater to families with young children. You can expect conveniences like daily housekeeping (hooray for not having to make the beds or clean up!), on-site restaurants, sometimes with kids’ menus and even play areas or pools where children can have fun and parents can relax . When booking a hotel room, look for one that specifically mentions family rooms or offers an extra bed or sofa-bed for your little one. Some of Potch’s hotels and guesthouses provide cots on request, and family suites that have multiple rooms or interleading doors (giving you a bit more space). The upside of a hotel stay is definitely convenience: no cleaning, no cooking, and often a breakfast buffet to make mornings easy. The potential downside is space: a standard hotel room might feel cramped once you add a toddler and all their gear. If your child goes to bed early, you might all be relegated to quiet time in a dark room by 8pm. To solve this, consider a guesthouse that offers a suite or an apartment-style setup, or even two interconnected rooms. Also, check if the hotel has a garden or play area where your child can get some wiggles out. Family-friendly hotels will often advertise things like a play corner, babysitting services, or kids under a certain age stay/eat free, which can indicate they’re used to hosting little guests (and won’t glare at you when your child is singing Baby Shark at breakfast). Lodges & Farm Stays: Around Potchefstroom, you’ll find charming lodges and farm stays that can give your family a mix of comfort and a touch of adventure. These are usually smaller properties often located just outside the city or in scenic spots by rivers or within nature areas. Lodges and guest farms can be fantastic for toddlers because they usually have lots of space, think big lawns, gardens, maybe some farm animals to see and a quieter atmosphere. Many have multiple-bedroom family units or standalone chalets, so you get privacy and room to spread out . Staying on a farm-like property lets kids safely experience a bit of countryside, which can be very exciting for city kids (who doesn’t love the chance to spot a cow, or just chase butterflies in a field?). Some lodges include breakfast or even all meals, giving you a semi all-inclusive feel, whereas others are self-catering. When considering a lodge, check what’s on-site: Is there a fence around the property? (Important if there’s a pool or if it’s near wildlife.) Do they have a playground or at least toys available? Often, places that advertise themselves as “family-friendly” or “child-friendly” will mention if they provide cots, high chairs, or have play facilities. Potchefstroom locals often note that many guesthouse owners go the extra mile for families , for instance, providing a cot and a few toys, or having backup lighting during load-shedding so your child isn’t spooked by the dark . Reading reviews from other parents can be very insightful here: if previous guests mention their toddler had a great time or the yard was perfect for kids, it’s a good sign . Image : The Go-To Guy Creations Making the Most of Your Potch Family Getaway A successful trip with toddlers comes down to balance. Pack wisely so you have what you need (but not your entire house), plan travel and activities at a kid-friendly pace, and choose accommodation that gives you comfort and convenience. Potchefstroom is a wonderful region for young families, it’s not overly touristy or hectic, and you’re never far from nature or town amenities, making it easy to adjust plans on the fly. You might discover that exploring your own “backyard” in Potch with your little ones gives you a new appreciation for the area’s parks, farms, and family spots. Most importantly, embrace the adventure with a flexible mindset. There will be hiccups, a forgotten sippy cup, an unscheduled potty stop, or a skipped nap, but those often become the funny stories you tell later. By keeping your focus on creating happy memories (and maybe a fatigue-managed tantrum or two ), you’ll set yourselves up for a rewarding vacation. Now that you’re equipped with some toddler-travel wisdom, you can move on to the exciting part: choosing the perfect family-friendly place to stay. Potchefstroom offers a variety of accommodations ready to welcome you and your busy little explorer , so go ahead and find the one that fits your family’s style, and get ready to make some holiday magic!

  • The Hidden Price of Handling Cash for South African SMMEs

Many small businesses assume cash is “free” because there’s no visible swipe fee. Practical ways to tame the cash drag Track it for 30 days. Log every kilometre, minute and slip connected to cash; the numbers speak for themselves. Quote dual prices upfront. “R500 (digital) / R485 (EFT before delivery)” keeps you transparent under the Consumer Protection Act while steering clients to cheaper rails. Bank smart, not often. Use intelligent-deposit ATMs or night safes that credit instantly at the lower per-R100 rate; cut branch deposits to emergencies. Digitise reconciliation. Payment-provider dashboards export CSVs, slashing human error and saving VAT-return time. Insure what matters, not the float. Lower on-site cash means lower robbery exposure—and often lower premiums. Bottom line Cash feels free, but once you price in banking charges, counting time, shrinkage, armed-robbery risk and the sales you never made, it’s often the most expensive tender in the shop. Run the sums for your own business; chances are that encouraging customers to tap, scan or transfer in real time will leave more profit in your pocket than a bulging till ever will.

  • Swipe, Tap or EFT? — Why Card & Digital Payments Are (Mostly) a Win for Plumbers, Wood-Deliveries & Other Home-Service Contractors in SA

South Africans don’t only pull out the plastic at tills, more of us expect the guy in the bakkie to have a card reader too. But with merchant-service fees sitting around 2½ %–3 %, is it worth it for small, mobile contractors? Let’s unpack the numbers, the law and the negotiables. Image: The Go-To Guy Creations First, the legal ground-rules You may not tack on a “card surcharge” after the fact. Section 23(6) of the Consumer Protection Act bars any supplier—goods or services—from charging more than the price that was displayed or quoted up-front.( cgso.org.za ) Dual pricing is fine. You can quote R2 000 (card) or R1 940 (EFT/cash)—both rates are disclosed before the job starts, so the choice is the customer’s. Card-scheme rules mirror this: Visa/Mastercard contracts say the card price must be included in the headline amount. Violate that and your bank can pull the machine. What the swipe really costs—and saves Cost/Benefit Rand impact for a typical R2 500 plumbing job Source Card fee (Yoco Core 2.5 % + VAT) ≈ R72 ( yoco.com ) QR fee (SnapScan starter 2.95 % + VAT) ≈ R85 ( snapscan.co.za ) PayShap instant EFT R0–R7.50 (bank-dependent) ( businesstech.co.za ) Cash-handling risks (theft, CIT, bank charges) ± R20–R25 per R2 500¹ (industry averages) Late-payment drag (chasing invoices) SMEs lose weeks of cash-flow every year ( iol.co.za ) Cash costs are lower for a sole-trader than for a supermarket, but still include deposit fees, mileage to the bank, and robbery risk. Bottom line: The ± R72 card fee is often cheaper than finance-charges, follow-ups and written-off debt when a client “will EFT later”. Revenue upside most contractors miss Faster cash-flow: funds land in 1–2 business days (Yoco, iKhokha) or instantly (PayShap). Fewer “I don’t have cash” walk-aways: Visa’s 2024 SME study found 29 % of cash-only firms lost sales because customers had no cash on hand. Trust factor: branded POS devices signal legitimacy; many homeowners prefer paying digitally for traceability and warranties. Add-on sales: Wood-delivery outfits that started taking tap-to-pay reported bigger average loads because “it was just a card tap away”. (Visa SME interviews, 2024). Real-world proof Paperless plumbing fleet — Gauteng firm converted vans to mobile POS; “plumbers are equipped with Yoco devices for immediate payment wherever possible.”( plumbingafrica.co.za ) Payment-link boom — Contractors now text a Yoco or SnapScan link before arriving; 60 % of invoices are settled before they pick up a spanner.( yoco.com ) Yes, the fee is negotiable (at least partly) Aggregator vs. direct acquiring: Once turnover tops ± R200 k/month, ask the bank for “interchange-plus” pricing or Yoco/iKhokha for a custom rate—many drop below 2 %.( yoco.com ) Bundle services: Some banks waive the POS rental if your business banking and PAYE run through them. Use PayShap for high-ticket parts: PayShap caps fees (or is free) above R1 000 at several banks; combine it with card for convenience items.( businesstech.co.za ) Practical playbook for contractors Step Why it matters How to execute Quote two prices Keeps you CPA-compliant & transparent “R4 500 card / R4 350 EFT if paid on booking.” Offer a payment link on booking Secures parts deposit, slashes no-shows Yoco Link, SnapScan Link, bank EFT with clear ref. Carry an all-network 4G card reader No Wi-Fi dependency on site Devices like Yoco Khumo include data.( yoco.com ) Batch high-value items into PayShap Saves % fees on pricy boilers, stoves Present a QR or cellphone-number ShapID. Reconcile digitally Speeds VAT & tax records Auto-export CSVs from your PSP dashboard. Should every Contractor accept cards? Yes, if your typical job is > R500 and you spend any time chasing payment. Maybe not if you only sell firewood on a rural roadside at R40 a bundle—PayShap or cash may suffice. Either way, bake the cost in. A 2–3 % fee is just another input like petrol or copper piping—factor it into your hourly rate rather than surprising the customer. Final word For mobile plumbers, handymen, gas installers, garden-service crews and wood suppliers, card and real-time digital payments flip the script from “cost” to “cash-flow accelerator.” The trick is to price transparently, cherry-pick the cheapest rails for each job, and negotiate the margin you can control. Do that, and the little black machine in your toolbox will pay for itself many times over.
