Unused Solar Geysers Gather Dust in Lusaka Hall Amidst Calls for Accountability At an Integrated Development Plan (IDP) meeting on 8 May 2025 at Lusaka Hall in the JB Marks Municipality, residents from Wards 4, 16, and 19 were shocked to discover hundreds of boxed solar water-heating systems occupying the entire hall space, forcing attendees to sit outside in the cold. These geysers, originally intended for installation in low-income households under a national programme, have instead gathered dust for years This revelation has prompted a renewed call by the Democratic Alliance (DA) caucus for urgent municipal accountability, including a full audit, installation progress report, and immediate action to deliver the long-delayed benefits to the intended recipients. Delays, Storage, and Fruitless Expenditure In the case of JB Marks, several hundred solar water-heating units remain unused inside Lusaka Hall. Photographs from the scene show dusty cylindrical tanks, collapsed cardboard boxes marked “Glass Vacuum Tube,” and steel frames piled haphazardly, pointing to years of neglect. The situation has implications beyond inconvenience: exposure to dust, weather, or theft could render many units unusable, undermining their original purpose. Permanent security guards have been stationed at the hall since at least 2018 to protect the equipment, an added cost to the municipality. Nationally, storage costs for unused geysers have exceeded R300 million. DA’s Push for Action and Transparency In response to the ongoing inaction, the DA caucus in JB Marks has called on the Executive Mayor and Municipal Manager to urgently investigate the matter and present a detailed report to the municipal council.  Their requests include: An audit to verify the current stock and condition of all stored units; A report detailing how many geysers were installed, where, and by whom; A transparent installation schedule prioritizing indigent elderly households; Disciplinary or contractual action against those responsible for implementation delays; Engagement with the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) to release any remaining funds and support training for local installers. The DA Councilor also informed this publication that they had, in 2019, provide a list of beneficiaries and job candidates for the installation phase. They further stated that ward councillors in Ikageng agreed the programme should begin by serving the elderly. A detailed list of qualifying homes was submitted to municipal authorities that same year, but the process has remained stalled since. From food and blankets to technical support and a surprise kitty tent, every bit of help counted. And while it might’ve felt like a small gesture to some, the folks at PAWS want everyone to know: it meant everything. Cosy Cats and Culinary Comforts Francois FouchĂ© made a feline-friendly delivery that caused quite a stir, not among the humans, but among the cats. He dropped off a pet tent that had one curious kitty claiming it before it was even zipped up. Alongside the tent came a generous stash of cat food, ensuring full tummies for days to come. PAWS extended their heartfelt thanks, noting that the kittens will be both safe and snug thanks to Francois’ thoughtful donation. Potch Gas Fires Up Daily Pet Meals Without gas, there’s no warm food, and cold pellets aren’t much of a gourmet treat. Thankfully, Potch Gas Technical & Appliances stepped up, making sure the PAWS kitchen kept cooking. Thanks to their consistent supply of gas, warm meals for the dogs were sorted. The team at PAWS gave a big shoutout to the business, saying, “Ons waardeer julle opreg!” (We truly appreciate you!) Till Slips Turned into Tuna Sometimes small actions, like dropping your till slip in a box, lead to big results. Thanks to Pick n Pay Van der Hoff Park’s slip donation initiative, PAWS was able to stock up on cat food for their fabulous felines. A full trolley of 1.75kg bags made its way into the shelter, and every packet was a win for whiskers. PAWS Powered Back Online by Einstein Electrical It wasn’t all food and fluff. Behind the scenes, PAWS faced a serious issue when their electricity went out. With fridges full of meat and sick animals in need of care, this wasn’t just an inconvenience,it was a crisis. Enter Ivan Leach from Einstein Electrical, who jumped in, fixed the issue, and got the lights (and fridges) back on. No fanfare, just good work done well. PAWS summed it up best: “Dankie vir jou onbaatsugtige hulpverlening!” (Thank you for your selfless assistance!) “To everyone who donated food, blankets, treats, or time: thank you. Whether it was captured in a photo or not, your kindness is felt every day in every full bowl and every warm tail wag. ‘No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.’ – Aesop.” Dankie aan al ons donateurs! Whether it was a tent, some chow, or just a bit of electricity, PAWS Potchefstroom is stronger (and fluffier) thanks to you. Bright Umbrellas and Big Imaginations in Grade 1 There was colour, creativity, and a whole lot of excitement in the Grade 1 classrooms at Redwood Schools this week, as the little ones got stuck into a seasonal art activity, building their very own cardboard umbrellas! 🎹 Learning Through Play The activity gave our learners a hands-on way to explore shapes, colours, and patterns, while also tapping into their imagination. Each umbrella looked different: some bright and bold, others with soft tones and playful designs. And yes, a few had raindrops, sunshine and even lightning bolts drawn on them!  Art might seem like just fun, but it’s also a chance to build fine motor skills, practice focus, and learn how to follow instructions, all while being creative. Rainy-Day Joy (Even Without the Rain) While the weather outside didn’t bring real rain, inside the classroom it was umbrellas galore, and the laughter, storytelling and pride in their work made it clear that this activity was a hit. The learners were eager to show off their creations to teachers, friends and parents alike. Why It Matters At Redwood College, we believe in learning through doing, and this umbrella project is a great example. It wasn’t just about cutting and gluing; it was about confidence, expression and fun.And let’s be honest
who wouldn’t smile at a row of colourful umbrellas made by six-year-olds?Well done to our teachers for guiding such a joyful project, and to our Grade 1 learners for putting their hearts into it!  Ford Proℱ Convertor Program: Launch and Impact in South Africa Ford South Africa has introduced the Ford Proℱ Convertor Program as a game-changing initiative to support high-quality vehicle conversions for commercial needs. Launched at the 2025 NAMPO Harvest Day agricultural show in Bothaville, this program empowers approved local converters to modify Ford vehicles (such as the Ranger bakkie, Everest SUV, and Transit van) for specialized uses, all without compromising Ford’s standards or warranty coverage .  A New Chapter in Customized Vehicle Conversions The Ford Pro Convertor Program marks a new chapter in Ford South Africa’s commercial vehicle services, formalizing how specialty conversions are done. At its core, the program recognizes and accredits premium conversion partners across the country, each having undergone thorough assessment by Ford to ensure their build quality and installation methods meet Ford’s strict standards ford.co.za . In practice, Ford selects and empowers these Ford-approved convertors to carry out modifications on select models, currently focusing on the Ranger pickup (bakkie), Everest, and Transit lines, to fulfill a broad spectrum of industrial and commercial needs. Diverse Conversion Applications for South African Needs A major driver for the Ford Pro Convertor Program is the diverse range of vehicle applications needed in South Africa’s economy. Standard off-the-showroom vehicles often require modifications to serve in specialized roles across industries like agriculture, mining, construction, security, and healthcare. Ford’s new program directly targets this demand by supporting a wide variety of conversion types, all built on Ford’s robust vehicle platforms. Ensuring Compliance, Quality and Warranty Preservation Because vehicle conversions often involve significant alterations, compliance and quality control are at the heart of Ford’s program. All modifications under the Ford Pro Convertor banner undergo meticulous approval and auditing processes by Ford engineers. This oversight covers everything from the structural integrity of added components to the safety of electrical installations, making sure that the converted vehicle still meets Ford’s design specifications and South African road regulations. Impact and Outlook Early indications suggest the Ford Pro Convertor Program will have a positive impact on both customers and the local automotive industry. For business and fleet customers, it offers newfound peace of mind, they can now obtain tailor-made vehicles (be it a mine-ready pickup, a fully equipped ambulance, or a bullet-resistant SUV) knowing that the work is endorsed and audited by the vehicle’s manufacturer. This reduces the risk traditionally associated with aftermarket modifications and likely improves safety outcomes, since vehicles maintain their integrity and compliance. The ability to order these conversions through the familiar Ford dealer network also makes the process more accessible Call Daly Ford: 018-299-8000  WhatsApp: 079-806-6759 Email: emil.pitout@teamdaly.co.za Events Calendar The Go-To Guy has an extensive events calendar that you can find a variety of events in and around Potchefstroom, in fact it is now one of the most comprehensive calendars in our region, you can visit the calendar at the following link: Events Calendar WEN ’n kettie vir Pa hierdie Vadersdag! From sideline support at Mooirivier to dominant performances at De Leeukuil, Potchefstroom Dorp Rugbyklub delivered a weekend filled with purpose, pride, and power. The weekend’s momentum began early on Friday , 30 May 2025, when members of Potch Dorp Rugbyklub paid a special visit to Laerskool Mooirivier . Their goal? To uplift and support the school’s under-9 rugby teams ahead of their games against visiting opponents from Kathu. That spirit carried over into Saturday , 31 May, as Potch Dorp Rugbyklub hosted their next round of President and Neser League  matches at Piet Bosman Park . With all three men’s teams scheduled to play, the venue quickly filled with anticipation, supporters, and unmistakable maroon pride. Image(The Go-To Guy) Dorp players with Laerskool Mooiriver students It was a vibrant afternoon as players and coaches from Potch Dorp engaged with the young athletes, offering words of encouragement, clapping from the sidelines, and reminding the boys that rugby is as much about heart as it is about skill. Mooirivier’s young warriors played bravely, even though the final scores reflected two hard-fought defeats: O/9B:  Mooirivier 7 – 12 Kathu O/9A:  Mooirivier 10 – 17 Kathu Still, the team spirit was undeniable, and the connection between grassroots rugby and club-level excellence was on full display. Amid all the action, there was a special moment for the Mooirivier boys. Dressed in their school jerseys, they posed for a photo with Oom Sakkie Raadt, president of Potch Dorp Rugbyklub, symbolising the bond between local school rugby and the broader club community. Image (The Go-To Guy) Laerskool Mooirivier's rugby team with Ferdi Joubert, vice chairman of Potch Dorp Rugby Club With all three men’s teams scheduled to play, the venue quickly filled with anticipation, supporters, and unmistakable maroon pride. The third team  was set to open the afternoon with a clash against Impala 3. However, a late withdrawal by Impala meant the match had to be cancelled on short notice. Despite the disappointment, the squad remained upbeat, contributing to the vibrant matchday atmosphere. Next up, the second team  delivered a thrilling performance, edging out Impala 2 with a dramatic 15–14  victory. It was a tight contest from start to finish, and the one-point difference reflected the intensity and grit shown by both sides. The crowd erupted as the final whistle blew, recognising the effort that secured the home win. Then came the headline event, the first team showdown . Potch Dorp’s senior squad took to the field with purpose, and their performance was nothing short of commanding. Dominating play and maintaining control throughout, they overwhelmed Impala’s first team with a convincing 42–17  victory. It was a match marked by fluid attacking phases, clinical finishing, and solid defense. The club also thanked Laerskool Mooirivier  for their energy, parents and players for the turnout, and their loyal supporters for showing up despite a week filled with schedule changes. Special mention went to those who gathered at De Leeukuil  to back the maroon jersey with unwavering spirit. With more matches to come, Potch Dorp Rugbyklub continues to build on momentum, community pride, and on-field excellence. • Evolution of Home Cleaning Products (1920s–2020s)

For the past century, household cleaning has shifted from simple natural mixes to advanced chemical formulas. In the 1920s, families typically cleaned with plain soap bars, baking soda, vinegar or lye and a lot of elbow grease. Image : The Go-To Guy Creations By mid-century, factory-made detergents largely replaced traditional soaps , for example, the OMO laundry brand (introduced in South Africa in the 1950s) helped consumers switch from homemade lye mixtures to pre-made powders . Industry histories note that by the 1980s cold-water detergents emerged and by the 2000s concentrated, biodegradable “green” cleaners were on the marketenvirospec.com . In other words, what once required hours of hard scrubbing can now often be done faster with powerful surfactants, enzymes and targeted formulas. Today’s innovations emphasize safety, efficiency and sustainability. Many modern cleaners use plant-derived or enzyme boosters to tackle tough stains and grease with less harmful chemistry than older formulas. For example, Sunlight dish soap now includes natural bio-enzymes to cut through food residue up to ten times faster . Cleaning devices and tools have also evolved , steam mops, high-efficiency vacuums and robotic cleaners are common. In South Africa (and in Potchefstroom specifically) there is a clear trend toward “green” products. Experts note that eco-friendly cleaners reduce exposure to harsh chemicals and help protect our health and the environment . Market reports also show shoppers favor biodegradable, cruelty-free labels: one local supermarket even sells a private-label detergent line marketed as vegan and eco-friendly . This article will trace those developments from past to present and explain what they mean for local households today. We will look at how South African homes cleaned in the 1920s versus now, from homemade soaps and scrubbing boards, through the rise of brands like OMO and Sunlight and highlight the latest products and DIY alternatives available in Potchefstroom. Image : The Go-To Guy Creations How Cleaning Products have changed through the Centuries 1920s–1930s – Soap Bars, Powdered Cleaners, and the Dawn of Detergents In the early 20th century, most South African homes used traditional soap bars and abrasive powders. For example, Unilever’s Sunlight soap bar (launched in SA in 1891) was a household staple for laundry and general cleaning. Abrasive scouring powders like Lever Brothers’ Vim (introduced in 1904) helped scrub floors and pots. These were effective but hard work. Chemical advances began to change this: by the 1930s companies introduced synthetic laundry detergents (e.g. P&G’s Dreft in 1933 and the heavy-duty Tide in 1946) that used surfactants to lift dirt. At the same time household bleach (sodium hypochlorite) became common. Clorox, originally sold to institutions, was marketed for home use by 1932, making strong disinfection (e.g. for whites and mould) widely available. 1940s–1950s – Postwar Boom and New Convenience Cleaners After World War II, electric washing machines spread across South Africa, and so did laundry detergents and bleaches. In the 1950s both powder and liquid detergents grew in popularity, often with built-in bleaching agents or “water-softener” additives to brighten clothes. Fabric conditioners and stain removers also appeared on shelves. New household cleaners emerged: for instance, Sunlight (the laundry brand) launched a dishwashing liquid  in 1957, reflecting the move toward purpose-made cleaners (instead of washing dishes with soap). By the late 1950s many homes also kept bottles of disinfectant antiseptics. British Reckitt’s Dettol (invented 1933) became a leading antiseptic/cleanser worldwide; by the mid-20th century it was sold for home use to kill germs on surfaces. 1960s–1970s – Specialized Formulas and Growing Safety Awareness In the 1960s cleaning became more specialized. New products like Unilever’s Cif scouring cream (launched in 1965) allowed scrubbing sinks and stoves without scratching. Laundry detergents added enzymes to break down grass and food stains (so-called “biological” detergents), and stain-pre-treats/tablets showed up in stores. At the same time, household bleach brands expanded (Glaxo’s Domestos bleach was introduced in the late 1920s overseas and brought to SA by Unilever in the 1960s). Consumer awareness of safety also started to rise: products gradually gained clearer warning labels (“keep out of reach of children”), though harsh chemical cleaners (acids, ammonia, phenolics) were still common. 1980s–1990s – Environmental Concerns and “Green” Beginnings During the 1980s and 1990s, regulators and consumers began to push for safer, more eco-friendly formulas. Laundry products shifted to specialized formulas (e.g. cold-water detergents and concentrated powders). Importantly, the use of phosphate “builders” in detergents became controversial due to water pollution. By the late 1980s, South African companies (like Lever Brothers/Unilever) were researching zero-phosphate alternatives. Many new products touted “biodegradable” surfactants and color-safe bleaches. In South Africa, this era also saw the rise of cheaper private-label cleaners in supermarkets as value offerings, since many households still prioritized affordability over green branding. (Nonetheless, terms like “non-toxic” and “eco-friendly” started to appear on labels by the 1990s.) 2000s – Green Trends and Natural Ingredients In the 2000s ecological awareness became mainstream. Manufacturers launched genuinely eco-friendly household cleaners featuring plant-derived or food-grade ingredients. South African companies and retailers responded: for example, Pick n Pay introduced a “PNP Green” cleaning range certified vegan, cruelty-free and biodegradable. Many products began to specify that they were free of phosphates, chlorine, phthalates and artificial fragrances. Family- and pet-friendly formulas  also appeared. For instance, South African green brand Green Bee markets a concentrated degreaser “safe to use around children and pets, with no harmful residues or vapours”. Refillable and bulk formats grew (to cut plastic waste and cost), and online sales made niche brands easier to find. Eco-labels like Africa’s Eco-Choice  (launched 2001) helped consumers identify truly low-impact products. 2010s–2020s – Disinfection and Safety in Focus By the 2010s home cleaning emphasised both health  and sustainability . Products marketed themselves as “non-toxic, biodegradable and child-safe”. The COVID-19 pandemic (2020–) massively increased demand for disinfectants (bleach, alcohol and antibacterial surface sprays), underlining the importance of hygiene. At the same time, consumers read labels more carefully. Many modern cleaners explicitly advertise pet- and child-safety , and fragrance-free or gentle formulas (suitable for allergy-prone families) became available. Recycling and refill initiatives grew: concentrated cleaners (laundry and dishwashing liquids in smaller packages to dilute at home) help reduce plastic waste. However, economic reality still matters: even in 2025 most SA shoppers look for value. Budget private-label cleaners (like Woolworths’ or Checkers’ house brands) remain popular alternatives to big-name green . Image : The Go-To Guy Creations Cleaning Products Today Potchefstroom residents now have a century’s worth of innovation at their disposal. For tough jobs, traditional bleach-based or alkaline cleaners still work effectively (brands like JIK or Domestos remain widely sold). But modern shoppers can choose gentler options: look for Eco-Choice  or similar ecolabels , and labels claiming “biodegradable” or “no harmful chemicals”. Products certified by retailers (e.g. Pick n Pay Green) or by independent bodies ensure genuine eco-friendly performance. Green home brands (often sold in refill stations) use natural enzymes and safe solvents, minimising risks to children, pets, and the environment . At the same time, remember that basics can be inexpensive: simple soap-based or vinegar-and-bicarbonate mixtures still clean many surfaces without health hazards. By understanding how formulations have changed and by reading labels, Potchefstroom families can choose effective cleaners that balance cost, convenience, and safetyEvolution of Home Cleaning Products (1920s–2020s)
