On Friday, 25 July 2025, the City of Matlosana’s Special Cleanup Operation rolled through the Central Business District (CBD) for a second consecutive week, underscoring the municipality’s drive to enforce by‑law compliance and bolster public safety. Spearheaded by Councillor Wesly Kgang in collaboration with Ms Lesego Seametso from the municipal administration, the operation targeted business irregularities, overdue accounts and road‑safety hazards. A diverse team of municipal officials, including officers from Local Economic Development, Traffic, Housing and District Health Services, joined the effort, demonstrating a coordinated, multi‑departmental approach to urban management. Inspectors checked whether guesthouses, retail outlets and food vendors held valid municipal permits, complied with health and safety regulations and maintained required fire‑safety equipment. According to the municipal communications department, officers visited more than 50 premises during the day: Guesthouse Closures:  Four establishments failed to meet minimum safety or sanitation standards, such as adequate fire escapes, potable water supply or properly maintained refuse areas and were immediately shut down. Notices posted at each entrance informed proprietors of pending legal action if remedial steps are not taken within the next 14 days. Electricity Disconnections:  Five businesses with severely overdue municipal accounts had their power supply temporarily disconnected. Officers emphasized that reconnection is contingent upon full settlement of outstanding balances and the signing of a payment‑plan agreement. In a brief statement, Councillor Kgang explained: “Ensuring that commercial operators respect by‑laws protects not only their customers but also neighbouring businesses and pedestrians. It is our responsibility to maintain a safe, clean and accountable urban environment.” Road Safety and Public Well‑Being Beyond commercial inspections, the cleanup team addressed road‑related safety risks in partnership with the Traffic Department. Crews repaired damaged traffic signs, repainted faded pedestrian crossings and removed illegally parked vehicles that obstructed footpaths. A mobile unit conducted random sobriety checkpoints near late‑night entertainment spots to deter drunk driving. In addition, officers distributed educational leaflets at bus stops and taxi ranks, reminding commuters of pedestrian‑right‑of‑way rules and safe crossing practices. “A single accident can ripple through the entire district,” noted Mr Thabo Mothibedi, a senior traffic engineer involved in the operation. “By proactively fixing signage and enforcing parking regulations, we reduce collisions and improve the overall flow of traffic.” Multi‑Departmental Collaboration The success of the cleanup day rested on a clearly defined collaboration among several municipal divisions: Local Economic Development (LED):  Oversaw business‑compliance checks and liaised with guesthouse owners to outline corrective measures. Merafong City Local Municipality (MCLM), formally designated as a Category B municipality under South Africa’s Municipal Structures Act, is a significant local government entity in the southwestern portion of Gauteng Province. Spanning roughly 1 631 km² , it comprises 28 wards and a mixed-member council structure, with 28 ward councillors and 24 proportional representatives . Nestled within the West Rand District Municipality alongside Mogale City and Rand West, it encompasses urban towns, former mining settlements and rural areas, including Carletonville, Khutsong, Fochville, Kokosi, Greenspark, Welverdiend, Wedela, Blybank and a number of mining towns. Historical and Geographic Context Origins and Boundary Developments Merafong’s name derives from the Setswana term for “mining area” or “mining region” – reflective of its gold‑rich heritage. The municipality’s history is inextricably linked to gold mining: Carletonville was established in the 1930s and ’40s to support extraction of some of the world's richest gold deposits. This shifted back in 2009 following legal and civic intervention sparked by unrest in Khutsong; the Constitutional Court ruled that the municipality must be realigned entirely within Gauteng. The Ikageng Stadium was alive with youthful energy and footballing passion this past Saturday as 19 teams clashed in the Under-11 Supatsela Development Cup. The tournament, a grassroots football showcase aimed at nurturing young talent, proved to be a memorable and tightly contested affair, culminating in a dramatic penalty shootout victory for Sibanda United over Ikageng Peace Makers. This past Saturday, 19 July, the usually bustling Matlosana Mall in Klerksdorp became the heartbeat of something far deeper than fitness or fun, it marked the starting pulse of a growing national campaign to bring dementia and Alzheimer’s into the public eye. The event? A vibrant community trail run that blended athletic energy with heartfelt purpose, creating a ripple effect for the upcoming TRACTOR Awareness Rally. Image: NWU Running for Remembrance Organised as a prelude to the larger national awareness effort, the Matlosana Mall trail run drew participants of all ages, students, medical professionals, families, and concerned citizens. The message was clear: dementia affects us all, directly or indirectly, and the time to talk about it, support those living with it, and break the stigma is now. While the run was symbolic, the cause behind it was urgent. With over 187,000 older South Africans currently living with dementia , and that number expected to climb to 250,000 by 2030 , the rallying call isn’t just for awareness, it’s for action, compassion, and community resilience. TRACTOR: A Journey of Hope The TRACTOR campaign, which stands for Together Rallying Across Communities to Overcome Remembrance-loss , is a bold and creative initiative launched by North-West University (NWU) . It’s spearheaded by the university’s Faculty of Health Sciences, in partnership with Engineering Compliance and the Department of Sustainability and Community Impact, and supported by corporate and civic partners. From 30 August to 11 September 2025 , a branded Landini tractor  will roll out from Potchefstroom, covering more than 1,900 km  to reach Bredasdorp in the Western Cape. Along the way, the tractor will stop in towns across the country, hosting events, sharing real stories, offering memory care resources, and celebrating the resilience of caregivers and those affected. Why a tractor? As the campaign explains, the vehicle is both symbolic and strategic: “slow but steady, powerful and present” , a perfect metaphor for the long, enduring journey faced by those with memory-loss conditions and their support systems. Participants wore campaign shirts and sported temporary tattoos of the TRACTOR logo. Volunteers handed out leaflets explaining early signs of dementia, how to seek help, and why every small act of understanding matters. In a country where mental health remains heavily stigmatized and many live far from care facilities, initiatives like TRACTOR become more than symbolic. This exciting annual event brought together hockey teams from across the North West, creating a weekend filled with intense matches, team spirit, and memorable sporting moments.
