Sparked by the alleged rape of a 7-year-old girl at her school, the community came together in solidarity to demand justice, support survivors, and raise awareness. The march began at Cachet Park at 09:00 and moved through Hoffman and Meyer Streets, passing the North-West University, before concluding at the Department of Education building on Loop Street. Local law enforcement ensured that the demonstration remained orderly. The event sent a powerful message: Potchefstroom stands united against GBV and calls for meaningful change. In episode 27 of Spiritual Talk , Pieter Conradie welcomes back Werner Broodryk to explore a topic central to Christian life, but often misunderstood or overlooked: discipleship . While the word “discipleship” may feel familiar, this episode reminds us that its meaning runs deep. It’s not just a program or Bible study group. It’s about committing to walk with someone in love, truth, and transformation. It’s about choosing relationship over routine and showing up for someone, not once, but consistently. What is discipleship, really? At its core, discipleship means walking with others as they grow in Christ . It’s not just about evangelism or conversion, it’s the journey after  the “yes” to Jesus. It’s where real transformation happens, often in the mundane: through coffee conversations, emotional support, truth-telling, and steady presence. Werner explains: “When Jesus sent his disciples, He didn’t say ‘Go and make converts.’ He said, ‘Go and make disciples.’ That means showing people the way, helping them grow, fall, and get up again. It takes time, sacrifice, and love.” The Cost of Discipleship One of the most powerful parts of the episode is the honest discussion around the cost  of discipleship. It’s not free. It will cost you time, energy, emotion, and sometimes finances. It demands intentionality , sacrifice , and most of all, love . “Discipleship isn’t convenient, it’s costly. But so is love. God gave His Son while the world was still in sin. That’s the model of love and discipleship we’re called to.”  Pieter This sacrifice, however, bears eternal fruit. A life touched through real discipleship leads to another life touched, and so the Kingdom expands. Discipleship Means Showing a New Way to Live Discipleship doesn’t mean being perfect, it means being present . It means saying, “I’ve made mistakes too. Let me walk with you.”  Many young believers are left asking, “What’s next?”  after encountering Jesus. Without guidance, they may fall back into the habits of the world. That’s where the disciple-maker steps in. Werner shares how even things that once seemed enjoyable in a worldly life lose their appeal when we grow spiritually. “The things I did when I was lost, yes, they were fun. But now I find joy that lasts. Now I party differently. I surround myself with people who love Jesus. I live for something bigger.” The Role of Community and Consistency Discipleship thrives in community. This episode highlights the importance of walking with others , not just talking at them. It means meeting people where they are, just like Jesus met Zacchaeus, the woman at the well, or the leper. Discipleship happens in: Everyday conversations Coffee shop moments Honest prayers Parties that reflect joy, not just hype Holding someone accountable with love And yes, sometimes it means lovingly confronting a friend with truth, even when it’s hard. Because love doesn’t always say what’s easy; it says what’s necessary. Discipleship in a Fast-Paced, Shallow World One of the episode’s most compelling points is the contrast between the depth of discipleship  and the shallowness of modern life . AI, social media, and instant gratification have shortened our attention spans and made us expect quick fixes  in every area of life, including our faith. “We’re so used to fast results that we forget the spiritual life takes time. Growth takes roots. Discipleship takes relationship.” Werner Final Thoughts: Truth Over Trends Discipleship is about trading comfort  for calling , noise  for truth , and isolation  for relationship . It’s saying, “I’ll walk with you. I’ll listen. I’ll guide. I’ll show you how I follow Jesus, not perfectly, but wholeheartedly.” And in a world full of noise, that kind of love stands out. In episode 14 van SportStroom het ons saam met een van Wes-Transvaal se ware rugby-legendes gekuier, Daan “Popo” Viljoen. ’n Man vol stories, trots en rugby-geskiedenis, het Daan die klomp teruggevat na ’n era waar rugby alles was vir jong seuns in die streek. Waar “Popo” begin het Daan se bynaam “Popo” het ’n storie van sy eie. Dit begin alles in 1961 by Hoër Volkskool Potchefstroom. ’n Klein, mollige seun word deur sy pa by die skool afgelaai en ontmoet die groot naam van daardie tyd – Eugene Terre’Blanche. Met sy ronde gesig gee Eugene hom sommer daar en dan die naam “Popo” en sê toe grappend: “Jy is my slaaf hierdie jaar.” En só het die naam gebly.Van daar af was dit Popo se werk om Eugene se wit rugbybroek te was en te stryk – en glo my, dit moes spierwit wees. “Ek het geskraap, geskuur en gestryk soos ’n besetene – maar dit was daar waar ek leer om trots te wees op daai wit broek,” het Dan vertel. Van atletiekbaan na rugbyveld Daan was nie net ’n rugbyspeler nie – hy was ook ’n goeie atleet. Maar dit was op die rugbyveld waar sy hart gelê het. Hy onthou sy eerste wedstryd teen Stilfontein Hoërskool, waar sy spoed hom laat uitstaan het.Spoedig beweeg hy op – van o/14 A, na o/15 A en toe o/16 A. Sy groot geleentheid kom toe die eerstespan-afrigter hom as 16-jarige roep om op te draf.“Dit was my droom om daai wit hemp en broek te dra soos my pa destyds. En ek kon dit vir drie jaar doen – my pa was so trots,” sê Daan met ’n glimlag. Die groot oomblikke – Loftus en verder Daan onthou die Wes-Transvaal Administratiewe Beker seisoen soos gister. Volkskool was onoorwonne tot in die eindstryd op Loftus Versfeld. Hulle verloor teen Groblersdal, maar vir Daan was die ervaring op Loftus iets wat vir altyd sal bly.“Daai dag op Loftus – ek onthou elke oomblik. Dis ’n trots wat mens nie kan beskryf nie,” sê hy. ’n Ernstige kopbesering verander alles Nie al die herinneringe was maklik nie. Daan vertel van die dag teen Heidelberg Volkskool toe hy kop eerste teen die pale vasgehardloop het. Hy word wakker in Klerksdorp-hospitaal – geen idee waar hy is nie.“Die dokter het gesê my rugbydae is verby – nog ’n stamp en ek is dalk klaar,” vertel Daan. Daai dag was ’n keerpunt, maar sy liefde vir die spel het nooit weggegaan nie. Na skool – Rugby en onderwys loop saam Na matriek vat Daan sy pad Onderwyskollege Potchefstroom toe in 1966. Rugby was steeds deel van sy lewe en hy speel verder vir Wes-Transvaal o/20 en het selfs vir die senior span gespeel.“Prof Johan Klaassen was my mentor – ’n man vir wie ek groot respek gehad het,” sê Daan. “Daardie jare het my gevorm, nie net as speler nie, maar as mens.” ’n Erfenis van trots en liefde vir die spel Daan se reis – van Eugene se “slaaf” tot Loftus-held – is ’n ware storie van trots, opoffering en liefde vir die spel. Tot vandag toe kyk hy terug met ’n vol hart.“Wanneer ek vandag nog rugby kyk, kry ek daai gevoel terug – trots om deel te wees van iets groter,” sê hy. ’n Groet aan ’n ware legende Aan die einde van ons gesprek was dit duidelik – vir Daan was rugby nooit net ’n spel nie.
