  • Ikageng Police Deliver Justice as Murderer Gets 25 Years

The community of Kanana Extension in Ikageng can finally breathe a sigh of relief after justice was served in a tragic case that shocked residents earlier this year. The Potchefstroom Regional Court sentenced 61-year-old Molefi Benjamin Ramoholokoane to 25 years in prison for the brutal murder of his girlfriend, Maria Masego Fumba (37). The horrific incident happened on Cosmos Street, where police were called to what witnesses described as a heart-wrenching scene. Upon arrival, officers found Fumba lying in a pool of blood, with two stab wounds to the chest. Paramedics from Emergency and Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) confirmed that she had died on the scene. Swift Work by Ikageng Detectives The case moved quickly, thanks to the relentless efforts of Constable Pholoso Mosenogi from the Ikageng Detectives Unit. His determination and attention to detail led to a solid case against Ramoholokoane, who was positively identified by an eyewitness. Within months, the investigation was wrapped up, and justice was delivered, a rare but powerful victory for victims of gender-based violence in the community. Police Leadership Applauds Hard Work Acting Provincial Police Commissioner Major General Patrick Asaneng commended the officer and the prosecution team for their professionalism and commitment. “The commitment and professionalism displayed by Constable Mosenogi and the prosecution team are commendable. This sentence sends a strong message that violence against women will not be tolerated,” said Major General Asaneng. A Message Against Gender-Based Violence The sentencing has been widely welcomed by community members who say the outcome restores confidence in the justice system. With gender-based violence still plaguing many households, this case stands as a clear reminder that Ikageng Police are not taking nonsense when it comes to crimes against women.

  • OAKtober 2025: A Fun Run Rooted in Community Spirit

Nothing can dampen determination - not even a chilly, overcast morning. On Saturday, 18 October, hundreds of eager participants gathered at Cachet Park, ready to take on the 2025 Oaktober Family Fun Run. And true to its name, it was a day filled with energy, laughter, and plenty of fun! Taking to the streets This year’s Fun Run saw approximately 800 participants take to the streets and race along the famous Oak Avenue to raise funds for its preservation. The crowd truly pulled out all the stops, showing off their spirit in fantastic costumes - from a beekeeper with his buzzing bees and wacky witches to an entire “pooch family.” Abraham Kriel Children’s Home sent some of their brave little soldiers who stood out in blue tutus, while learners from Potchefstroom Central cheered each other on. It was a day for the whole family, and the camaraderie among participants brought warmth to an otherwise cold morning. The name of the game The community rallied behind the initiative, with all proceeds going toward the preservation of the iconic oak trees that have become symbolic of Potchefstroom. The route stretched from the park, across Die Akker Koffiehuis, to Potchefstroom Dam and back. Determination was the name of the game - from those chasing personal bests to those collecting the most sweets along the way, everyone had a goal in mind. The organisers were astonished when the first runners crossed the finish line in under 30 minutes, sending a clear message: these participants meant business. Dogs of all shapes and sizes accompanied their owners, tails wagging with excitement, while many mothers pushed strollers through the 5km route - truly an inspiring sight. Some participants took the competition seriously, while others simply enjoyed a leisurely walk with their families on a crisp Saturday morning. The goods A huge thank you goes to Platō Coffee and Potch Centraal Pet Vet for sponsoring the amazing goodie bags! Our prize winners walked away with wonderful spoils thanks to you. Agora Coffee kept everyone warm and caffeinated, and the Bubble Tea stall was another crowd favourite. A final word of thanks Finally, thank you to all the key role players who made this event possible: Potchefstroom Eikeboomlaning, Potchefstroom Central School, and The Go-To Guy. Oaktober 2025 was a resounding success and we’re already looking forward to next year! Until then, keep on running for the oaks. _______________________________________ Johané van Dyk - Potchefstroom Oaktober Family Fun Run 2025 in photos All images and footage were provided by The Gazette

  • The Hidden Danger Inside Manholes

Manholes and sewer openings are a common sight in communities across South Africa. Most people pass by them without a second thought. But what many don’t realise is that these access points can conceal a lethal threat: sewer gas. Invisible, fast-acting, and often undetectable by smell alone, this toxic mixture can overpower and kill within seconds. Understanding the makeup and dangers of sewer gas is critical for public safety. It’s not only maintenance workers who are at risk, curious residents, good Samaritans, or anyone near an open or blocked manhole may find themselves in danger if the proper precautions are not taken. Image: The Go-To Guy Creations What Gases Are Found in Sewers? Sewer gas is not a single substance, but a dangerous cocktail of several gases produced as organic waste decomposes. Chief among these is hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) , a gas that smells like rotten eggs at low levels but becomes undetectable, and far more deadly, at high concentrations. Even a few breaths can cause dizziness, unconsciousness, or death. Another common component is methane (CH₄) . This gas is odourless and flammable. While not toxic in the same way as hydrogen sulfide, it displaces oxygen and poses a major explosion risk. High levels of methane in a confined space can lead to suffocation without warning. Also present are carbon dioxide (CO₂)  and carbon monoxide (CO) . CO₂, while not poisonous on its own, can push oxygen out of the air and cause suffocation. CO, on the other hand, binds to the blood’s oxygen-carrying molecules and can be fatal even in small quantities. Ammonia  and a wide array of volatile organic compounds (VOCs)  further contribute to the mix, irritating the eyes and respiratory system, and making an already hazardous atmosphere even more dangerous. Why Sewer Gas Is So Dangerous What makes sewer gas so deadly is not just its contents, but how quickly it can affect the human body, and how little warning you may get. Many people assume that if they can’t smell anything unusual, the air must be safe. This is a dangerous misconception. Hydrogen sulfide, for instance, can numb the sense of smell at high levels. What might start as a strong odour can disappear suddenly, not because the gas is gone, but because it's reached a concentration that overwhelms your senses. Similarly, methane and carbon monoxide have no smell at all. There are no clear visual or olfactory clues to warn you when you’re breathing something that could kill you in seconds. Symptoms of exposure, such as nausea, headache, eye irritation, dizziness, or confusion, can appear within moments. But in high concentrations, sewer gas can cause a person to collapse instantly, without any time to react. Victims may simply fall unconscious where they stand. The danger is especially acute in manholes and other confined spaces. These areas often lack airflow, allowing gases to collect undisturbed. Because some of these gases are heavier than air, they settle at the bottom, making even a quick descent into a manhole life-threatening. Key Safety Tips for Residents The most important rule: never open or enter a manhole . These structures are not meant for public access and can hide lethal atmospheres. Even leaning into an open manhole to inspect or smell can result in immediate collapse from toxic exposure. If you see a manhole overflowing, unsealed, or blocked, do not attempt to fix it yourself . Don’t poke around with a stick or open the cover to relieve pressure. It is not just raw sewage that poses a risk, it’s the invisible gases released by the decaying waste. If someone appears to be in distress or has collapsed near a manhole, do not attempt a rescue . This is where many additional deaths occur: one person collapses, and others rush in to help, unaware that they are walking into the same poisoned air. Most deaths in these incidents are not of the first person affected, but of those who try to help without protection. Instead, alert emergency services immediately. Provide clear details of the location and report a suspected toxic gas or confined space hazard. Keep bystanders away and, if possible, move upwind of the opening. Blocked manholes and leaking sewers should be reported promptly to local authorities. It’s helpful to take photos from a safe distance, note the time and location, and encourage others in your area to report the issue as well. Repeated complaints often receive faster attention. Preventing Tragedy Through Vigilance While residents must take care never to enter or tamper with manholes, there’s also a broader need for awareness and accountability. Blocked sewers and long-neglected infrastructure are more than just an inconvenience, they’re a public health threat. When manholes remain clogged for days or weeks, pressure can build up inside, increasing the risk of a sudden release of toxic gas. Communities need prompt response and regular maintenance to ensure that these risks are kept in check. Just as importantly, anyone tasked with working in or around sewers should be properly trained and equipped. This includes testing the air in a manhole before opening it, using ventilators to disperse trapped gases, and wearing breathing equipment if entry is absolutely necessary. Unfortunately, some tragedies have occurred because proper safety procedures were ignored, skipped, or unavailable. As a community, asking questions, raising concerns, and demanding action when blocked drains or open manholes are left unattended can make a difference. Public pressure can ensure that safety protocols are followed and infrastructure is maintained before disaster strikes. Image: The Go-To Guy Creations A Tragedy That Should Never Be Repeated On 15 October 2025, two residents lost their lives and another was hospitalised after being exposed to sewer gas from a blocked manhole. It happened after attempts were made to clear the obstruction without proper equipment or support. The gas overwhelmed them almost instantly, and only one person made it out alive. This incident, which unfolded in a quiet residential area, is a heartbreaking example of what can go wrong when the silent danger inside manholes is underestimated. It serves as a sobering reminder that the risks are real, and that caution, awareness, and proper reporting are not just bureaucratic steps, but potentially lifesaving actions. Let this serve as a warning and a call to action. The gases lurking beneath our feet may be invisible, but their impact is devastatingly real. By staying informed and alert, residents can help protect not only their own lives but the safety of their entire community. #TheGoToGuy #PublicSafety #SewerGasAwareness #CommunityAlert #StaySafe 💨🚫⚠

  • City of Matlosana Engages Jacaranda Residents in Thuntsa Lerole Service Delivery Drive

The City of Matlosana held a Thuntsa Lerole community feedback session in Jacaranda, focusing on service delivery, infrastructure, and community development. The initiative forms part of the municipality’s ongoing effort to strengthen direct engagement with residents and bring government services closer to communities. During the event, Executive Mayor Cllr Fikile Mahlophe urged residents to register for indigent subsidies, emphasizing how these support programs are vital in assisting low-income households. He explained that the municipality remains committed to improving the quality of life for all citizens, particularly those in vulnerable circumstances. Image: City of Matlosana Addressing Housing and Infrastructure Challenges One of the central topics discussed was the delay in the Jacaranda Housing Development Project. Originally intended to provide essential infrastructure, such as water, electricity, and roads, the project has faced disruptions caused by administrative and procedural blockages. Mayor Mahlophe acknowledged the frustration of affected residents and assured them that the municipality is working to resolve the challenges hindering progress. Residents expressed concerns regarding incorrect municipal billing, unreliable water and electricity supply, and the slow pace of service rollout. They also raised issues related to youth unemployment and the limited availability of local job opportunities within municipal projects. Image: City of Matlosana Voices from the Community Community members appealed for stronger prioritisation of vulnerable groups in housing allocations. They specifically requested that persons with disabilities and the elderly receive priority placement in upcoming housing phases. Additional concerns included the lack of scholar transport and the need for speed humps to improve road safety in the area. These discussions reflected a strong sense of civic participation, with residents taking an active role in identifying and addressing local challenges. Visible Service Delivery Efforts As part of the Thuntsa Lerole program, municipal officials and supporting government departments rendered on-site services, including: Cleaning of illegal dumping sites. Unblocking of sewage systems. Distribution of title deeds to rightful beneficiaries. These efforts were complemented by outreach services from both local and district departments, ensuring residents could access government programs and administrative support directly. Image: City of Matlosana Working Together for Progress The Thuntsa Lerole initiative in Jacaranda underscored the City of Matlosana’s intention to foster stronger collaboration between the municipality and its residents. • North West Police Launch Safer Festive Season Operation to Tackle Crime Surge

Intensifying the Fight Against Crime Law enforcement agencies in the North West have officially launched the Safer Festive Season Operation , a coordinated campaign aimed at curbing crime during the upcoming holiday period. The initiative was launched in Kanana Township near Klerksdorp, with provincial leadership pledging to intensify safety and security efforts across all districts. The campaign, running from October 2025 to January 2026 , forms part of a national strategy under the Justice, Crime Prevention, and Security (JCPS) Cluster , which includes the South African Police Service, municipal law enforcement units, and community safety partners. A Multi-Focused Strategy for Safer Communities Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General Patrick Asaneng  outlined a six-point focus plan targeting key areas of concern. These include: Combating gender-based violence  and protecting vulnerable groups. Addressing aggravated robbery  and repeat violent offenses. Strengthening border and property security  to prevent cross-border crimes. Disrupting the illicit economy , including illegal trade and counterfeit goods. Tightening control over firearms, liquor sales, and second-hand goods . Enforcing municipal by-laws  to maintain order in high-risk zones. Provincial Leadership Calls for Unity The operation was officially launched by MEC for Community Safety and Transport Management, Wessels Morweng , alongside Major General Asaneng, at Matlosana Stadium in Jouberton, Potchefstroom . Morweng reaffirmed the province’s commitment to a zero-tolerance approach against lawlessness and urged residents to work hand-in-hand with authorities. “This campaign sends a clear message: festive doesn’t mean lawless,” Morweng said. “Our officers are prepared, our communities are mobilised, and our focus is on prevention rather than reaction.” National Collaboration Under Operation Shanela The North West’s Safer Festive Season launch is aligned with the national Operation Shanela  program, a crime-combating model that prioritises high-visibility policing, road safety enforcement, and targeted raids in hotspot areas. The operation will also involve routine roadblocks, liquor outlet inspections, and special operations against illegal firearms and unlicensed businesses. Law enforcement agencies have also emphasised community involvement  through neighborhood watches and volunteer patrols, reinforcing that sustainable safety requires collaboration between the police and the public. Towards a Safer Holiday Period As the festive season approaches, the North West Provincial Government has reiterated its commitment to ensuring that residents and visitors can celebrate in safety. Police visibility is expected to increase across major routes, entertainment areas, and townships, while joint operations with traffic and municipal officials will continue until the end of January 2026. The message from provincial authorities is clear: safety is everyone’s responsibility , and cooperation remains key to keeping communities crime-free throughout the holiday season. #TheGoToGuy #SaferFestiveSeason #OperationShanela #NorthWestPolice #CommunitySafety #FestiveSeason2025 #CrimePrevention 🚓🎄🛑🤝🕊️🔦

  • Merafong Residents Mobilise for Shutdown Over Service Delivery Failures

Growing Frustration Sparks Action Residents of the Merafong City Local Municipality  are preparing for a mass shutdown on 24 October 2025 , calling for immediate intervention in what they describe as years of failed service delivery, corruption, and governance breakdowns. The protest, organised by the Merafong Service Delivery Crisis Forum (MSDCF) , aims to send a united message to national and provincial leaders that local communities can no longer tolerate administrative neglect. The march, expected to draw participants from Carletonville, Fochville, Kokosi, Khutsong, Khutsong Extension 5, and Welverdiend , will begin at the Carletonville Municipal Offices , where demonstrators plan to deliver a memorandum of grievances to top government officials. National Authorities on Notice According to Buti Elliot Mtembu , a leading figure in the MSDCF, the memorandum will be directed to several high-ranking officials, including the National Police Commissioner , Auditor-General , Public Protector , Acting Head of the Hawks , and the Director-General of the Department of Water and Sanitation . The forum has also extended invitations to Hon. Velinkosi Hlabisa , Lt. General Fanie Masemola , and Advocate Shamila Batohi  to receive the document in person. Mtembu criticised what he described as the “arrogant and dismissive conduct” of Merafong City’s Executive Mayor, accusing the municipality of ignoring legitimate community concerns and responding with intimidation instead of solutions. “The MSDCF calls on all residents of Merafong, regardless of political affiliation, to join this peaceful shutdown,” said Mtembu. “It is time to stand united for decent and accountable governance.” A Call for Accountability and Reform The MSDCF has long highlighted a series of municipal challenges, including failing water and sanitation infrastructure, irregular billing, unreliable refuse collection, and poor road maintenance. Residents claim that despite repeated petitions and meetings, the local government has failed to implement meaningful corrective measures. The forum’s leadership stated that the protest is not politically driven but a community-led effort to demand transparency, accountability, and basic service provision. They also encouraged residents in Ward 10, Khutsong , to participate actively in the upcoming by-election to ensure that their voices are represented in council decisions. Peaceful Protest with a Purpose Organisers have assured authorities that the planned shutdown will remain peaceful and within the framework of the law. However, the scale of expected participation suggests significant disruptions to local services and transport in Carletonville and surrounding areas. Participants are being urged to bring placards highlighting key issues such as water shortages, poor waste management, and the demand for clean governance. Religious institutions, schools, and local businesses have also been encouraged to support the movement by closing for part of the day in solidarity. Standing Together for Change The MSDCF described the march as “a clarion call to stand together against persistent service delivery failures and corruption that have long plagued the community.” By uniting under one voice, residents hope to trigger concrete interventions from national oversight bodies and ensure that promises of reform translate into visible improvements. As the 24th of October approaches, all eyes will be on Merafong City, a municipality whose residents have chosen to transform frustration into civic action, signaling that accountability begins at the grassroots. #TheGoToGuy #MerafongShutdown #ServiceDeliveryCrisis #MerafongCity #CarletonvilleProtest #CommunityAction #GoodGovernance 🚫🏙️🪧🤝📢⚖️

  • Women Proteas Seal Semi-Final Spot with Dominant Win over Sri Lanka

The South Africa Women’s cricket team delivered a statement performance at R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Friday, the 17th of October 2025, as they crushed hosts Sri Lanka Women’s cricket team by 10 wickets  (DLS method) to move into the knockout race of the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025. Sri Lanka’s innings was curtailed by rain and reduced to 20 overs, in which they managed only 105/7 , before Laura Wolvaardt and Tazmin Brits guided South Africa to victory without losing a wicket, the chase completed in just 14.5 overs. Sri Lanka’s Rain-Affected Innings Sri Lanka opted to bat after winning the toss, but persistent rain delayed play for over five hours and forced the match into a 20-over per side format. Key early wickets from South Africa’s bowlers, notably Nonkululeko Mlaba who claimed three wickets, restricted Sri Lanka to a modest total. Sri Lankan batter Vishmi Gunaratne top-scored with 34 (33) but the hosts could not mount a meaningful fight. Commanding Chase from the Proteas Chasing a revised target of 121, the South African openers set the tone early. Captain Laura Wolvaardt made 60* (47), while Tazmin Brits backed her up with 55* (42), stitching together an unbroken partnership of 125 runs and guiding the team home with 31 balls to spare . Their aggressive yet controlled approach crushed any momentum Sri Lanka might have hoped for and showcased the depth and composure in the Proteas’ squad. Semi-Finals in Sight This win marks the Proteas’ fourth straight victory  in the tournament and moves them into an automatic semi-final qualification position. With the win, South Africa rise into second place on the standings , trailing only Australia and positioning themselves favourably as the group stage nears its conclusion. As one of the first sides to make a major move towards the knockout rounds, the Proteas now carry momentum and belief into their remaining fixtures. #TheGoToGuy #Unbreakable #CWC25 #ProteasWomen #CricketSouthAfrica #SAWomen #WorldCup2025 🏏🔥🙌🎯
