  • Military Skills Competition 2025: From Water Challenges to Precision Shooting in Potchefstroom

The Chief of the South African National Defence Force’s Military Skills Competition (MILCOMP) 2025  has moved into full gear at the Army Support Base in Potchefstroom, North West. Soldiers from seven nations , South Africa, Botswana, Mozambique, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Zambia, and Zimbabwe, have been testing their stamina, accuracy, and teamwork across a demanding schedule of events. From the physical intensity of the Water Obstacle Course  to the discipline of Rifle and Pistol Shooting , the competition is already delivering moments of excellence, camaraderie, and cultural exchange. Day One: Water Obstacle Course Brings High Energy Start The official scoring phase began on 01 October  with the Water Obstacle Course , held at the Kopanelo pool. This aquatic gauntlet required participants to navigate beams, rafts, and submerged obstacles in a test of agility, strength, and endurance. With spectators cheering and flags waving, competitors surged through the course in pairs, battling fatigue and slippery surfaces. The event was as much about determination and resilience as it was about speed. National pride was evident, with participants driving themselves to the finish line while their teammates offered vocal support from the poolside. Highlights included strong showings from South African troops, who combined confidence in local conditions with tactical precision. International participants, meanwhile, demonstrated adaptability and showcased their own military fitness traditions. Cultural Evening: A Taste of South Africa On Wednesday evening, participants were welcomed to a Traditional Cuisine and Cultural Evening  hosted at the 4 Artillery Regiment’s Mess. The occasion served as a reminder that MILCOMP is not only about competition but also about building bonds of friendship across borders. Attendees enjoyed a range of traditional South African dishes, from samp and beans  to mala mogodu (beef tripe) , ting (fermented sorghum porridge) , and maotwana (chicken feet) . Cultural performances brought further vibrancy, with the Soweto Zulu Dance Group and the Tswana Cultural Dance Group captivating the audience through rhythm, energy, and storytelling. For international guests, the evening offered an authentic taste of South Africa’s cultural richness, leaving lasting impressions of hospitality and heritage. Day Two: Precision on the Shooting Range On 02 October , the competition shifted to the Dirkie Uys Shooting Range , where participants engaged in the Rifle and Pistol Shooting categories.  Armed with the R4 5.56mm assault rifle  and the Z88 9mm pistol , soldiers competed in high-pressure trials of accuracy and timing. Unpredictable spring weather added a challenge, with gusty winds and fluctuating temperatures testing competitors’ composure. Despite the elements, the atmosphere was marked by discipline and professionalism. Safety marshals enforced strict range protocols, ensuring a secure and fair contest for all. The sharp crack of rifles and pistols echoed across the range, punctuated by focused silence between volleys. Both Regular and Reserve Force soldiers demonstrated skill under pressure, while international competitors matched them with equally sharp execution. What Lies Ahead The competition schedule continues with the Land Obstacle Course  on 03 October , followed by the climactic 8km Combat Run  on 04 October.  Each event is designed to push physical and tactical limits, reflecting the diverse skill set required of modern soldiers. With two days complete, MILCOMP 2025 has already showcased a blend of endurance, accuracy, and cultural exchange. The competition remains not only a measure of individual and unit excellence but also a stage for international solidarity among allied defence forces. Wrap-Up The first days of MILCOMP 2025 in Potchefstroom have highlighted the resilience and professionalism of soldiers drawn from across Africa and Europe. From the high-octane Water Obstacle Course  to the focused discipline of the Shooting Range , the competition is setting a high standard for the days ahead. At the same time, cultural evenings and shared experiences are reinforcing the spirit of unity that lies at the heart of the event. The report highlights road improvements, reservoir recoveries, and the commissioning of new water pumps, while also noting areas requiring greater accountability. Image: JB Marks Roads and Infrastructure: Safer Routes in Focus Work continued on Sooliman Street Part 2  and Hoffejee Street , with road patching units achieving significant progress. Hoffejee Street has now been 100% squared and stabilised , while Sooliman Street Part 2 stands at 65% completion , both ready for asphalt application. Yellow Fleet: Extending Road Life in Doornpan The Yellow Fleet unit continued its preventive maintenance operations with the grading of gravel roads in Extension 5, Doornpan, Ventersdorp . These works are designed to smooth out rough roads, extend road life, and reduce dust while ensuring reliable access for local communities. Performance Rating:  8/10 , consistent delivery with measurable benefits for rural accessibility. Water Services: Combating Leaks and Theft The Water Services teams remained highly active, addressing both meter thefts  and pipeline leaks. Highlights included: Replacement of a burnt meter in Extension 7. Multiple leak repairs and the installation of new gate valves in residential areas. A rebuild of a stolen meter on Aster Street. While 6879 Tshatri Street remains unresolved due to an awaited electrical connection , the overall progress reflects strong output from teams operating under pressure. Performance Rating:  8/10 – productive, though interdepartmental delays remain a challenge. Sewer Team: Safeguarding Public Health The sewer maintenance teams addressed issues in Sonderwater and surrounding areas , clearing blockages, unblocking roddle eyes, and even removing foreign objects such as a plastic soda bottle  lodged in an inspection point. Their interventions continue to play a critical role in preventing health hazards and ensuring sanitation reliability across neighborhoods. Performance Rating:  9/10 – strong responsiveness and effective community interaction. Waste Management: Flawless Delivery Waste collection once again achieved a 100% clearance rate  across all categories: household bins, business premises, and hotspot areas. Teams emphasized their commitment to maintaining clean streets as a foundation of public health and community pride. Performance Rating:  10/10 – perfect execution sustained over consecutive days. Reservoir Performance: A Strong Start to October Water security remains a key focus, with the first two days of October reflecting notable improvements across most reservoirs : Old Works Reservoir:  100% – full capacity maintained. Ikageng Area:  The West Reservoir remains at 100%, with the Main Reservoir nearing optimal capacity at 86%. Eesterandjies Complex:  Gradual progress at 27%, with the 10ML unit still under maintenance. Achievements and Impact Key milestones for 01–02 October include: 5 water infrastructure issues resolved. 5 sewer blockages addressed. 2 road projects advanced toward asphalt completion. 100% waste collection across households and businesses. 2 new water pumps commissioned successfully. Over 35 municipal staff involved in frontline service delivery. Overall Daily Performance Rating:  8/10 – strong delivery in core areas, with room for improvement in unreported departments. Areas Requiring Attention Despite the progress, several departments did not submit reports, including Paving, Road Marking, Parks, Electricity, Urban Water, Urban Sewer, and the Ward 11 Sewer Project.  The lack of accountability from these units was noted as an ongoing concern, particularly as the municipality has recently been recognised as the Best Performing Municipality in the North West Province . Image: JB Marks Wrap-Up The 02 October 2025 report  reflects a strong start to the month for JB Marks Municipality, marked by reservoir recoveries, road stabilisation, and continued perfection in waste collection. With new pumps operational and school routes prioritized for upgrades, service delivery momentum remains high. However, the absence of consistent reporting from several departments highlights the need for strengthened internal accountability to ensure that progress is visible across all municipal functions. As October unfolds, the balance between operational successes and organizational discipline will define the municipality’s ability to sustain its award-winning performance. #TheGoToGuy #JBMarks #ServiceDelivery #Potchefstroom #WaterSecurity #CommunityDevelopment 🚧💧♻️⚡

  • JB Marks Crowned Best Performing Municipality in North West Province

In a notable endorsement of municipal performance, JB Marks Local Municipality has been awarded the Best Performing Municipality in the North West Province at the Municipal Performance Awards held in Sun City. The accolade recognizes the municipality’s contributions to municipal sustainability  and acknowledges its standing within the property industry. Significance of the Award The award highlights JB Marks’ efforts in maintaining and improving municipal systems, infrastructure, and services. It draws attention to the importance of sustainable practices in local governance, particularly in how a municipality manages growth, finances, service delivery, and responsiveness to community needs. For JB Marks, this recognition acts as both validation and motivation to maintain standards and to push further in areas needing improvement. Context and Comparisons JB Marks has previously been recognised for excellence in water services. The municipality earned the Blue Drop Certification  for its Potchefstroom water supply system, a benchmark awarded by the Department of Water and Sanitation to municipalities that meet rigorous water quality, infrastructure, and management criteria Moreover, in regional assessments of municipal governance, JB Marks has been identified as the best-performing municipality within the North West, scoring above average in the Ratings Afrika Municipal Financial Sustainability Index. Moneyweb+1 These prior recognitions help frame the recent award as part of a trajectory of improved performance rather than an isolated achievement. Criteria for Performance Awards Municipal performance awards often assess a wide range of factors: Financial management  and budget discipline Infrastructure projects  and service delivery effectiveness Administrative efficiency  and accountability Sustainability measures  in water, sanitation, energy, and environment Community responsiveness  and public engagement In this case, JB Marks’ acknowledgement from the awards panel emphasizes its balanced approach, where growth, infrastructure enhancement, and service reliability intersect. Community & Sector Reactions Community representatives and local stakeholders have welcomed the award as a sign that efforts by municipal staff are being noticed beyond the locality. The property industry, in particular, which often relies on stable municipal services and infrastructure for development, recognised the importance of awarding a municipality that shows consistent capacity in maintaining municipal sustainability. Observers note that while awards are symbolic, they help build investor confidence, promote accountability, and raise expectations that municipal services keep pace with community growth. Looking Forward: Maintaining Momentum Recognition brings both honor and responsibility. For JB Marks, sustaining this status will mean continued focus on: Upgrading aging infrastructure  across roads, water, and sewage systems Ensuring financial sustainability , minimising losses and increasing efficiency Expanding services equitably  to underserved areas Strengthening transparency, oversight, and community engagement Innovating with environmental and sustainable programs The municipal leadership will likely use the award as leverage to attract further investment, strengthen public trust, and set higher internal benchmarks. Final Thoughts The Municipal Performance Awards distinction for Best Performing Municipality in the North West is a milestone for JB Marks. It underscores the municipality’s capacity to deliver essential services, manage municipal resources, and maintain sustainable operations in a challenging environment. Yet as many municipalities know, acclaim is not a destination but a stepping stone. The true test lies in whether JB Marks can build on this success, maintaining consistency while innovating and adapting to community needs. For now, the recognition stands as a public testament to sustained effort, and a challenge to do even better.  #JBMarks #MunicipalPerformance #Sustainability #LocalGovernance #ServiceExcellence 🏅🏛️📈🌿

His defensive composure, ability to read the game, and vocal leadership kept his side organised during tense battles.

Praktiese info Datum: 14 Oktober 2025 Tyd: 18h00 – 21h00 Plek: Potchefstroom Prys: R350 per persoon Kontak: Anrie – 082-774-2246 Vir wie is dit?
