Iced coffee is creeping its way up the ladder and is a strong contender for the most consumed beverage. Coffee, stat. I mean, coffee stats. Let’s face it, there’s nothing quite like a steaming cup of coffee in the morning - whether you fancy a Flat White or opt for the stronger Espresso or even just a good cup of instant coffee, to some it’s the perfect (or only) way to start your day. In our beloved South Africa, two-thirds of the adult population drink coffee on a daily basis - that’s approximately 21.7 million people. That’s a lot of coffee mugs! The road will be closed on Monday, 06 October 2025, from 08:00 until 17:00 , covering the stretch between the R501  and Hennie Bingle Street . The closure is linked to construction work requiring cranes and the transportation of heavy concrete slabs, with safety and traffic management measures put in place to minimise disruption. South Africa has reached a major power milestone with Eskom’s announcement that Unit 6 of Kusile Power Station has achieved commercial operation . This development marks the completion of one of the country’s largest infrastructure projects , as Kusile and its sister coal plant Medupi are now fully online with a combined 9,600 MW  of capacity . By adding approximately 800 MW  from Unit 6, Eskom has significantly strengthened the national grid , which is expected to improve overall energy availability and reduce the risk of load shedding  (rolling blackouts) across the country . Completion of Kusile Power Station and New Capacity Added The commissioning of Kusile Unit 6 on 29 September 2025 officially concludes Eskom’s “Build Programme”  – a years-long effort to construct two new supercritical coal-fired power stations, Medupi and Kusile . While Kusile strengthens coal-based baseload power, Eskom stresses that this is a stepping stone toward diversifying energy supply . Each repair demands both time and resources, leading to extended outages and significant costs for the municipality. As a community, we share streets, schools, and public spaces. We also share the responsibility to keep ourselves, and especially our young people, safe. It’s easy to think of railway tracks as harmless shortcuts, quiet places for photos, or even daring spots for adventure. But the reality is stark: railway property is not just restricted by law, it is a zone of life-threatening danger. When we talk about safety, it’s not just about rules on paper, it’s about protecting lives. Each of us has a role in ensuring that curiosity or carelessness does not end in tragedy. Image: The Go-To Guy Creations The Physical Risks Nobody Can Escape Trains do not stop for people The most immediate threat is being struck by a train. Unlike cars, trains cannot swerve, and emergency braking takes enormous distance. A heavy freight train may need more than a kilometre to stop completely. By the time the driver sees someone on the tracks, it’s usually too late. Adding to the danger, trains often look slower and sound quieter than they really are. Many modern locomotives are deceptively silent, making it almost impossible to judge their speed or distance accurately. The invisible killer: Electrocution Beyond the tracks lies another silent hazard, high-voltage electricity. Overhead railway cables can carry up to thousands of volts, strong enough to kill instantly. Even getting close to these lines, poles, or wires can be fatal. In some cases, people never touch the cable directly, the electrical current arcs across air or metal structures and claims their life in an instant. Even survivors of electrocution can face lifelong injuries such as severe burns, amputations, or nerve and heart damage. A Widespread Problem Across South Africa Trespassing on railway property is not rare, it happens daily across the country. In Cape Town alone, between 2015 and 2018, 456 railway-related deaths  were recorded. Of these, 330 were pedestrians struck by trains . At some hotspots, more than 300 people were seen trespassing in just 15 minutes. The reality is that this is not “someone else’s problem.” It’s ours. These are our families, our schools, our neighbours, our communities. The Law Is Clear: Trespassing Is a Crime Railway land is private and protected by law. In South Africa, the Trespass Act 6 of 1959  makes it a criminal offence to enter or remain on any property without permission. Penalty:  a fine up to R2 000 , or imprisonment for up to two years , or both. Courts may also impose heavier fines under the Adjustment of Fines Act in serious cases. In some cases, even suspended sentences or civil claims may follow - especially where damage to property or disruption of services occurred. And now, change is coming. On 1 August 2025 , the Railway Safety Act 30 of 2024  comes into force. This new law gives the Railway Safety Regulator greater powers to enforce safety, require security measures, and penalize violations more strictly. It signals a national determination to protect lives and property, but laws and enforcement alone cannot save us if people continue to take reckless risks. The Human Cost: Trauma Beyond the Tracks When someone dies or is injured on railway property, the pain radiates far beyond that individual. Families  live with grief that never leaves. Communities  carry the trauma, and classmates or peers are left shaken. Rail staff  who witness or drive through such incidents often suffer long-lasting psychological scars. Society  pays in disruptions, repair costs, and emergency responses. These tragedies are preventable, and prevention starts with awareness. What We Must Do Together Authorities and Operators Maintain fencing and barriers to prevent trespass. Place clear warning signs in visible spots and multiple languages. Deploy patrols, cameras, and community safety initiatives like Rail Enforcement Units. Educate learners in schools, highlighting the dangers of tracks and electricity. Communities and Individuals Teach young people the reality: trains cannot stop, and power lines are always live. Avoid crossing or walking on tracks. Always use designated footbridges or crossings. Never climb trains, poles, or any railway structures. Report broken fences, exposed cables, or unsafe areas to authorities. Choose safe, creative spaces for photos or adventures, railway lines are not worth the risk. Our Responsibility and Our Reminder Young people may seek thrills, shortcuts or viral content, but the price can be fatal. The law is clear: trespassing is illegal, punishable, and dangerous. The new Railway Safety Act (from 1 August 2025) will empower regulators and operators to enforce compliance more strictly. More than enforcement, education and consciousness are critical. Communities must understand that power lines do not sleep, trains do not swerve, and electricity does not wait. The loss of life from such acts is permanent, and the pain extends far beyond the individual, to families, peers, institutions, and society at large. Sadly, Potchefstroom knows this pain all too well. In 2019 , final-year student Arno Hollander  was electrocuted after climbing onto a train carriage. In 2025 , another 19-year-old student lost his life at the very same station in a similar tragedy. Both deaths remind us: one moment of risk can lead to a lifetime of grief. Carletonville Mother Arrested for Alleged Poisoning of Daughter Authorities in Carletonville confirmed the arrest of a 25-year-old mother accused of deliberately poisoning herself and her one-year-old daughter earlier this month. The child tragically died following the incident, initially suspected to be food poisoning from a local takeaway. Subsequent investigations revealed deliberate poisoning, leading to the woman’s arrest on September 19. She appeared briefly in the Oberholzer Magistrate’s Court on September 22 and faces charges related to the murder of her child. The case has shocked the community, raising concerns about child safety and the importance of mental health interventions. Courier Driver Hijacked near Welverdiend A RAM Couriers driver was the victim of an armed hijacking near Welverdiend on September 15. Armed suspects in a black BMW forced the courier van off the road before threatening the driver at gunpoint and transferring parcels into their vehicle. Stolen items included jewellery and mobile phones. Although the driver was left unharmed, police have opened an investigation. The incident adds to growing concerns over the targeting of delivery vehicles in semi-rural areas. Domestic Worker Tied Up During Oberholzer Robbery On September 15, a domestic worker in Oberholzer endured a frightening ordeal after three men broke into her employer’s Banfield Street residence. She attempted to escape but was tied up by the suspects, who then stole valuables including electronics and appliances. Although the victim was physically unharmed, the robbery left her shaken. Police investigations continue. Fochville Police Station’s Victim Friendly Room Recognised The Victim Friendly Room (VFR)  at Fochville Police Station was honoured at the 2025 Vita Basadi Awards, earning the Guardian Award runner-up position. Staffed by Sergeant Refiloe Queen Madelisa, an auxiliary social worker, and four victim supporters, the VFR provides counselling, case follow-up, and legal guidance to victims of crime. Beyond in-station support, the team runs community outreach initiatives addressing gender-based violence, drug abuse, and child neglect, while also distributing essential goods to vulnerable residents. The award highlights the role of police-community partnerships in promoting safety and compassion. Two Women Kidnapped in Khutsong Ext 5 Two women, aged 19 and 39, were abducted after leaving a local tavern in Khutsong Extension 5 in the early hours of September 21. The report highlights steady infrastructure restoration, preventive maintenance, and a commitment to consistent service delivery despite challenges posed by seasonal weather and resource constraints. From water supply stabilisation to waste management reliability, the municipality emphasised both immediate responses and long-term generational projects designed to strengthen future infrastructure. Roads and Infrastructure The Roads and Infrastructure division completed a four-week program of targeted restoration across both rural and urban corridors. In Gamogopa Village  and Ventersdorp Phutaditshaba , complete road surface rehabilitation and grading improved accessibility and safety. Walter Sisulu Street  underwent asphalt restoration and final inspections, ensuring durability under high commuter traffic. Promosa Road  received surface resealing, edge reinforcement, and shoulder strengthening to extend its lifespan. Beyers Naude Avenue  saw intersection improvements, road markings, and signage upgrades. Sooliman Street  hosted a concentrated pothole repair campaign with follow-up marking to increase road visibility. Supervisors described the strategy as a “repair-restore-rejuvenate” approach, focusing on phased upgrades to minimize disruption while improving drainage and structural resilience. The paving team also delivered precision interlock paving near Promosa cemetery, resolving water flow issues, while infrastructure support reinforced electricity-related paving and structural concrete works. Stormwater Management Preventive stormwater interventions focused on clearing drainage systems in flood-prone areas. Key operations included work on Big Street Sarafina  and Refiloe Street , where catchpit maintenance was conducted to optimise water flow. The superintendent stressed the importance of proactive measures, noting that clean drains before the rainy season reduce risks of property damage and traffic disruptions. Electrical Services The Electrical Services Department concentrated on infrastructure development, street lighting rehabilitation, and customer service interventions. Pole replacements were carried out in Extension 11  and at Promosa School , where a stolen cable was replaced with a bundled cable solution. Street light repairs and system restorations were completed in Sol Plaatjie, Chris Hani,  and Francio  areas. Critical substation operations were executed across Dock Street, Buffelsvlei, and Tshing, ensuring network stability. Illegal connections were addressed, while three legal reconnections restored service to households. The High Mast Lighting Program reached full completion, enhancing night-time visibility and community safety. Officials described the project as a milestone in crime prevention and mobility improvement for residents. Water Services Water services supervisors coordinated more than 35 repairs and installations  during September. These included meter replacements, leak repairs, valve checks, hydrant pressure testing, and burst pipe responses. The Sonder Water Project was highlighted as a flagship achievement, restoring supply to over 3,500 households  and reducing water-related complaints by 40 percent. Routine work was carried out across Sarafina, Mayibuye, Lekgele, and other areas, underscoring the scale of daily maintenance efforts. Blockages were also cleared at Lesego Primary School, President Street,  and Mozart Street,  while fatberg removal at the Indian Centre  highlighted the ongoing challenges of improper waste disposal. Waste Management The Waste Management division achieved a 100 percent daily collection rate for household bins, business premises, and hotspot clearances throughout September. Eight illegal dumping sites were also rehabilitated. Despite equipment challenges, the team maintained uninterrupted service for thirty consecutive days, reinforcing its role as a cornerstone of community cleanliness and pride. Yellow Fleet and Heavy Machinery Earthworks were deployed across wards for gravel grading, sewer trench excavation, and drainage channel clearance. Manual digging in Sokhweba’s clay soil and trench support in Extension 7 demonstrated adaptability under difficult conditions. Supervisors credited these operations for directly supporting successful water and sewer projects. Major Infrastructure Projects September also marked progress in generational investment projects: The Ikageng Reservoir Pump Station Upgrade  was completed, with new motors, generators, and bulk pipeline works finalized. The 25ML Extension 7 Reservoir  reached the first-quarter roof slab decking phase, expanding capacity for future demand. The Ward 11 Sewer Line Project  advanced to phase three, with trench backfilling, soil compaction, and pipeline securing underway. Municipal leadership described these as the largest water infrastructure investments in decades, intended to secure services for the next century.
