#NWU #Potchefstroom #CampusProtest #EFFStudents #AfriForumJeug #CampusSafety   #StudentVoices #SouthAfricaNews

Guests will be guided step by step, making it accessible whether one is picking up a paintbrush for the first time or already has a few paint-stained T-shirts to prove their experience. Refreshments, including tea, coffee, and juice, will be available to keep energy levels up while the pots transform from plain terracotta to personalised masterpieces. To top it off, each participant will go home with a free succulent to plant in their freshly painted pot, giving the whole thing a practical (and green) ending. • Protest Over Water Crisis Brings N12 and R500 to a Standstill

Residents of Kokosi in Merafong have reached breaking point, taking their frustration to the streets in a large-scale protest that shook the region this week. On Tuesday, traffic on the busy N12 and R500 intersection near Fochville was brought to a standstill as protesters blocked the roads with rocks, tyres, and vehicles. Their message was clear: without water, life is unbearable, and accountability is long overdue. The Water Crisis in Merafong For weeks, large parts of Merafong City Local Municipality, including Kokosi and Fochville, have faced crippling water shortages. The crisis stems from the municipality’s staggering R1.4 billion debt to Rand Water , which has resulted in restricted supply of up to 40%. With reduced pressure, high-lying areas like Kokosi have endured completely dry taps, leaving thousands of households without a basic necessity. The consequences have been dire. Families have queued at water tankers, relied on boreholes provided by private donors, or resorted to unsafe sources such as rivers and open manholes. Health concerns are mounting, with cases of stomach illness reported due to untreated water. Elderly residents and children have been especially hard-hit, with sanitation, schooling, and daily life severely disrupted. Community Demands and Demonstrations The “Total Shutdown” protest drew more than 70 residents who demanded immediate restoration of water supply. Their memorandum, handed to Executive Mayor Nozuko Best, gave the municipality 25 hours to act. Placards and chants echoed a deeper frustration, with many calling for the mayor’s resignation, accusing local leadership of corruption and incompetence. Residents stressed that the protest was not only about water, but also about dignity and accountability. Police Response and Tensions The protest escalated when police attempted to disperse the blockade, firing rubber bullets and tear gas. While no serious injuries were reported, the incident sparked outrage among protesters, who accused law enforcement of using unnecessary force against citizens demanding their constitutional right to basic services. Despite the tension, the protest remained firm in its resolve. Community leaders coordinated the shutdown, allowing only Grade 12 students to attend school while businesses and transport services stayed closed. Authorities’ Engagement Mayor Best personally received and signed the memorandum at the protest site, promising to respond within the 25-hour deadline. However, she did not address calls for her resignation, leaving many in the crowd unconvinced. Residents warned that if water was not restored by the given deadline, further shutdowns would follow. Current Situation and Outlook By Wednesday, debris at the N12 and R500 was being cleared, and traffic gradually began moving again. Yet, for the community of Kokosi, the real concern remains: whether their taps will flow again. Without immediate intervention from municipal and provincial authorities, the crisis threatens to deepen, pushing residents to continue protests and further disrupt critical routes. The Bottom Line The Merafong water crisis is more than a service delivery failure; it is a test of leadership, governance, and the resilience of a community determined to be heard. The protest at the N12/R500 intersection has made one thing undeniable, when people are denied water, they will no longer remain silent. What happens next will determine not only the flow of water but also the trust between citizens and those elected to serve them. #TheGoToGuy #Carletonville #MerafongWaterCrisis #FochvilleProtest #KokosiShutdown #RandWater #ServiceDelivery 🚱🔥🛑🚔✊

  • Potch Incidents Weekly Overview: Community Safety, Response, and Awareness in Focus

As the week unfolded across Potchefstroom, the community remained on high alert and deeply engaged, from scam warnings and heartfelt tributes to major road incidents and public safety initiatives. This week also brought the nation together in celebration of Heritage Day, honouring the diverse cultures that shape South Africa. Amid this, local heroes continued to step up, whether it was first responders answering calls, residents reporting suspicious activity, or security teams helping to recover stolen property. All info is from Potchefstroom First Responders Image: Potchefstroom First Responders Here's your detailed look at the key events, alerts, and community moments from the past seven days in Potchefstroom. 🚨 Safety Alerts & Scam Warnings 18 September – Facebook Marketplace & OTP Scams Residents of Potchefstroom were once again reminded of the growing sophistication of online scams. Criminals are actively exploiting Facebook Marketplace , posing as buyers or sellers to solicit One-Time PINs (OTPs) from unsuspecting users. These scams are often followed by fraudulent access to bank accounts or identity theft. Authorities urged residents to never share their OTPs, bank information, or engage in transactions unless meeting in public spaces with verified individuals. The community was encouraged to “Be your own First Responder” by remaining vigilant and cautious in all online dealings. 🚑 First Responders Acknowledged 19 September – Mooirivier Beskerming’s Impact Community support continues to drive local emergency services. Mooirivier Beskerming issued a public thank you, acknowledging how community backing has helped keep their First Response Vehicle  operational and responsive. Their quick reaction times have been credited with saving lives and strengthening public safety. The message served as a reminder of the important role partnerships between private security and residents play in keeping Potchefstroom safe. Image: Potchefstroom First Responders 🕊️ Honouring a Fallen Hero 20 September – In Memory of Colonel Zwelindawo Isaac Duma A wave of heartfelt tributes followed the passing of Colonel Isaac Duma , a respected SAPS veteran known for his warmth, integrity, and unwavering dedication to service. Colonel Duma began his career in the 1990s at the Ikageng Police Station and was remembered by many as a friend, mentor, and a true gentleman in uniform. His contributions to law enforcement and the Potchefstroom community will not be forgotten. “Gone but never forgotten,” echoed through social media tributes and eulogies. ⚠️ Student Safety Under Threat 21 September – Student Scammed in Petrol Hoax In a sobering incident, a local student was recently scammed after being approached by a man claiming he had run out of fuel. He handed over his bank card and car keys, asking her to fetch petrol while holding onto her belongings for “security.” Upon her return, the scammer, and the vehicle, had vanished. This case serves as yet another cautionary tale  about how scammers target young people, especially students new to the area. Authorities are urging students to trust their instincts, never surrender belongings to strangers, and always report suspicious behaviour immediately. 🕵️‍♂️ Reward Offered for Vandalism Tip-Off 22 September – Vehicle Hits Business Property A vehicle, believed to be a Renault, was driven through a business property at 3 Ross Street  during the night. The only clue left behind was a broken side mirror. The property owner has offered a R500 reward  for any information that leads to identifying the driver or locating the vehicle involved. This kind of community appeal showcases the importance of public cooperation in solving low-level but disruptive crimes. 🚗 Road Safety & Responsibility 23 September – N12 Fochville Incident Traffic was temporarily halted at the Fochville crossing on the N12  as authorities responded to an incident on-site. By noon, the road had been reopened, but drivers were urged to exercise extreme caution while using that stretch of road. Don’t Drink & Drive Campaign Amid rising concerns about reckless driving, residents were reminded to “Be responsible, don’t put your family or someone else’s family through pain and agony.”  The warning was not tied to a specific event but served as a timely reminder ahead of long weekends and public gatherings. Image: Potchefstroom First Responders Heritage Day & Road Safety Awareness 24 September – Heritage Day Safety and Veri-Fest Engagement Potchefstroom’s Heritage Day celebrations coincided with the vibrant Veri-Fest event, and the North West Road Safety Team took the opportunity to promote safe driving practices. Positioned at the Hennie Bingle entrance to the Fanie du Toit Sports Grounds, the team provided attendees with brochures, verbal guidance, and general awareness tools. In addition, there was anticipation around the festival’s effort to break the world record for the largest “braai”, a unifying South African tradition. A strong visual message from Potchefstroom First Responders helped anchor the community’s spirit on the day, reminding residents to reflect on the legacy of service, sacrifice, and togetherness that defines the town. Final Note As this week in Potchefstroom unfolded, the power of community was evident in every response, every shared warning, and every tribute. From raising scam awareness and acknowledging the service of local heroes to coming together for celebration and safety education, the people of Potchefstroom continue to prove that when a community works together, everyone benefits. #TheGoToGuy #PotchIncidents #CommunitySafety #FirstResponders #HeritageDay2025

  • The Benefits of Professional Beauty and Wellness Treatments

As the seasons change, many of us feel the need to refresh our look and renew our sense of wellbeing. Spring is a time for new beginnings, and what better way to embrace it than with treatments that restore, pamper, and boost your confidence? The services offered in the Spring Specials  package each carry unique benefits, here’s why they are worth considering. Image: The Go-To Guy Creations Pedicure with Foot Peel + Gel Our feet often carry the burden of long days, and they’re usually the first to show signs of neglect. A pedicure with a foot peel not only removes dry, dead skin and calluses but also improves overall foot health by preventing cracks and discomfort. Adding a gel finish ensures long-lasting, chip-resistant beauty, keeping your feet looking fresh and polished for weeks. This treatment combines comfort, care, and confidence, perfect for sandal season. Gel Overlay on Natural Nails (No Art) Not everyone wants intricate nail art, and that’s where a gel overlay shines. Applied directly to your natural nails, the gel acts as a protective layer, strengthening weak nails and preventing breakage. The result is a sleek, glossy finish that looks elegant and natural. It’s a low-maintenance option that allows you to enjoy strong, beautiful nails while maintaining a timeless, professional look. Underarm Wax + Bikini Wax Waxing offers benefits that go far beyond smooth skin. Unlike shaving, which can cause irritation or stubble within days, waxing removes hair from the root, leaving skin silky for weeks. Regular waxing can also result in finer, slower regrowth. The combination of underarm and bikini waxing enhances confidence, especially as warmer weather approaches, and reduces the hassle of daily upkeep. Plus, waxing exfoliates the skin, leaving it smooth and refreshed. Black Diamond Carbon Peel Facial Nicknamed the “Hollywood Facial,” the Black Diamond Carbon Peel is known for its deep-cleansing and skin-brightening effects. A thin layer of carbon lotion is applied to the skin and then treated with a laser, which removes impurities, dead cells, and oil buildup. The result is a smoother texture, minimized pores, and a radiant glow. It’s particularly effective for those struggling with acne, oily skin, or dullness, making it a powerful springtime pick-me-up that prepares your skin for the sunny months ahead. Brow Shape & Tint + Xpert Peel 10% Facial Brows are one of the most defining features of the face. Professional shaping and tinting can instantly enhance your natural beauty, giving your eyes a lifted, polished look. Pairing this with an Xpert Peel 10% facial brings a dual benefit: while the brows frame your face, the facial works to gently exfoliate and renew your skin. This mild peel reduces dullness, softens fine lines, and helps even out skin tone. Together, they create a youthful, radiant appearance that boosts confidence in every glance. Final Thoughts Each treatment in the Spring Specials list offers more than just a surface-level improvement—they are designed to support your overall wellbeing, confidence, and self-care. From the rejuvenation of your skin to the lasting shine of your nails, these services are about feeling good inside and out. This spring, investing in yourself can mean stepping into the new season with renewed energy, glowing skin, and the confidence to shine. The result not only underlined NWU’s title credentials but also gave the home fans a performance to savour as the Eagles advanced to their first final since 2019. Image: NWU Eagles Take Command Early From the opening whistle, NWU set the tone with suffocating defence and quick transitions.
