The N12 highway , a vital artery connecting the North West province, has been forced into an emergency closure following a major water pipeline burst and the detection of renewed geotechnical instability. On Monday, April 20, 2026 , a high-pressure bulk line managed by Midvaal Water  ruptured near Stilfontein, creating a high-risk environment for motorists and prompting an immediate response from provincial and local authorities. Pipeline Status and Technical Intervention As of today, April 21, 2026 , the City of Matlosana Local Municipality  reports that Midvaal Water has successfully isolated the burst and halted the flow of water. While the immediate flooding has subsided, the municipality’s electrical and water departments remain on-site to address secondary infrastructure damage. The primary concern now shifts to the structural integrity of the road surface along the Potchefstroom to Klerksdorp  route. Geotechnical experts  are arriving on-site today to assess whether the high-pressure water infiltration has triggered further subsidence in the area's sensitive soil. Geological Hazards and Road Safety The closure is compounded by a "developing geotechnical hazard" identified by the South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited ( SANRAL ). This prestigious title has earned him an invitation to represent the nation at the FIDE World Youth Chess Championship 2026 in Montesilvano, Italy, this June. A Journey Defined by Strategy and Passion Dewald’s journey began in Grade R after a simple demonstration by Chris Greyling sparked a lifelong obsession. Though told by his parents to wait until Grade 1, his enthusiasm never wavered. Under the mentorship of local coach Johan Steenkamp, Dewald’s talent flourished. By Grade 4, he had already dominated the Kenneth Kaunda region, necessitating a move to the highly competitive Tshwane region in Pretoria to find opponents who could match his growing skill. Time-trial bars are prohibited. E-bikes are permitted exclusively in the 50km category. Support: No team support vehicles are allowed on the route. Technical and support stations are available at specific waterpoints on the 155km and 115km routes. These stations are accessible via tar roads, meaning support crews do not need to enter the race route itself. Route Recce Riders wishing to preview the course may visit Koedoeslaagte Trail Park on weekdays or weekends. Access to the park requires an entry fee of R50 per adult and R25 per child. The organisers have noted that single and jeep-track route links are marked, though riders are reminded that these sections cross private land and should be treated with care.
