- Dealing With Frustration on the Course (Without Throwing Your Clubs 🤦)
Golf: the sport we love to hate. There’s a reason it’s often called “a good walk spoiled”. One moment you’re gliding down the fairway in the sunshine, and the next you’ve snap-hooked a drive into the trees and your blood pressure spikes. Every South African golfer, from the weekend hacker at the local muni to the scratch regular at Glendower, knows that boiling feeling when a round starts going south. The question is, how do you deal with it without tossing your 7-iron into the nearest dam or scaring the impala off the course? Image: The Go-To Guy Creations Why Golf Can Drive You Mad (You’re Not Alone) A golfer wrestling with his club, we’ve all felt like this after a duffed shot. First, understand that frustration is completely normal in golf. This game has a unique way of testing our patience and ego. You pipe one down the middle on 10, then chili-dip a chip on 11 and suddenly you’re fuming. In fact, if all the sound on a typical course fell silent, you’d likely hear a chorus of colorful language after missed shots, proof that everybody feels the struggle . Golf demands precision, yet even the pros hit shockers. Ever heard of Frustrated Golfer Syndrome? Sports psychologists use terms like that to describe how hard we take our mistakes on the course . We hit a bad shot and it’s never just “oops, bad swing.” Instead, we treat it like a moral failing (“I suck at this game!”) and our self-esteem plummets . The truth is, golf taps into our perfectionism, we imagine the perfect shot, and when reality doesn’t match, we lose it . Knowing this doesn’t instantly fix your temper, but it helps to remember that the frustration you feel is something all golfers experience at some point. You’re not the only one silently raging after a topped ball, so don’t beat yourself up for getting upset. Even the Pros Get Angry – But They Handle It Differently If you’ve ever helicoptered a club into the bushes (hopefully you haven’t!), take heart: even tour pros have had meltdown moments. South African golfer Hennie Otto famously lost his cool at the 2005 Nashua Masters, he missed a par putt and then needed five more putts to finish the hole, carding a painful 10 . He was so livid two weeks later that he snapped all of his clubs after a bad round ! We definitely don’t recommend that (unless you’ve got a sponsor and a spare set handy). The silver lining? Otto came back with a new set of clubs and fired a course record 65 in the SA Open . The lesson: a moment of anger doesn’t define you, it’s how you regroup that counts. South Africa’s golf legends are actually known for their steadiness. Think of Gary Player or Ernie Els, unflappable, even-tempered. Retief Goosen’s nickname is “The Iceman” because nothing seems to faze him. Of course, even gentle giants have their moments (yes, Mr. Els has six-putted a green, it happens). But top players tend to follow a rule: blow up, then shake it off. A pro might mutter a quick swear, sling the club back in the bag, and by the time they reach the next tee, it’s forgotten. In contrast, us amateurs will stew over that shanked 8-iron for five holes if we’re not careful. Remember, the pros train for mental resilience, and we can learn from them. It’s also worth noting that losing your temper can have real consequences. Besides ruining your scorecard, anger can hurt your reputation and even your gear (just ask Hennie’s broken clubs). As a funny old quote (attributed to notorious hot-head Tommy Bolt) goes: “If you are going to throw a club, it is important to throw it ahead of you, down the fairway, so you don’t have to waste energy going back to pick it up”. In other words, anger makes us do stupid things, so try not to literally throw away your equipment or energy. Plus, if you’re playing at certain South African courses, you definitely don’t want to toss a club into the water, some hazards might bite back (the 13th at Sun City’s Lost City course literally has live crocodiles in the water!). Temper tantrums aren’t worth a trip into the reptile pit. Understanding the Root of Your Frustration (Adjust Your Expectations) Why do we get so frustrated by a bad round? A lot of it comes down to expectations. We expect a lot of ourselves on the course, sometimes too much. Psychologists note that many golfers tie their self-worth to their performance; when shots go wrong, they feel helpless and angry because it’s like a personal failure . One key to dealing with frustration is perspective. Are you a 15-handicap expecting to play like a tour champion? Reality check: even scratch golfers hit awful shots; a 15-handicapper will hit plenty of them in any given round. In fact, if you usually shoot in the high 80s, it’s statistically normal that you’ll chunk, top, or shank a handful of shots each time out. As one psychologist dryly notes, a 15-handicap is going to hit 17–18 strokes over par on average, meaning mistakes are part of your game, not some freak injustice . So when a bad shot happens, remind yourself: It’s normal. It’s expected. The pros hit into the trees and then move on without drama . You can too. Instead of reacting like the golf gods have cursed you, try a mental reality-check: “Okay, there’s my one bad drive for the day, I’ve got it out of the way.” This kind of self-talk can diffuse the feeling that you “shouldn’t” mess up. Golf is hard, folks! Cut yourself some slack. Another facet is separating your self-esteem from the result. Missing a 4-foot putt doesn’t mean you’re a terrible golfer, let alone a terrible person. It simply means you missed a 4-foot putt. Period. Don’t make it bigger than it is. One psychologist quipped that many golfers need to “unhook” their golf performance from their identity, you’re allowed to enjoy the game without needing to master it . Keep in mind why you play: for fun, for challenge, for camaraderie. When you start seeing a round not as an exam of your worth but as a day out with mates, it’s easier to laugh off the bad shots. Try this: Next time you feel frustration building, literally laugh at yourself (or at the situation). It might feel unnatural, but it works. One golfer wrote that she forces herself to smile after every bad shot, the worse the shot, the bigger the smilegolfgal-blog.com . It sounds silly, but by outwardly grinning or chuckling at your flub, you signal to your brain that it’s okay . You’re still alive, still playing golf in the gorgeous outdoors, and it’s not the end of the world. By lightening up, you rob the bad shot of its power over you. Practical Strategies to Keep Your Cool on the Course At this point you might think, “Alright, I get it, be positive, be realistic, but what do I do in the moment when I’m ready to explode?” Here are some field-tested strategies (used by pros and backed by sports psychologists) that you can try the next time golf rage strikes: Take a Breather (Literally) – When that wave of anger hits, pause and take a deep breath, maybe two or three slow ones. This simple act can lower your heart rate and center you. Many coaches teach breathing techniques as the first line of defense against frustration . As you exhale, feel the tension go with it. You can even adopt a routine: step away from your ball, fix your gaze on something peaceful (like the clouds over Table Mountain or the trees swaying at Royal J&K), and breathe. This 10-second reset prevents an angry swing on the next shot. By the time you address the ball again, you’re a bit calmer and clearer. Use the “2-Second Rule” – This trick comes from famed putting guru Dave Stockton and it’s gold for anger management. Give yourself no more than two seconds to be mad about a shot, curse under your breath, clench your fist, whatever, but when those two seconds are up, stop . Force yourself to immediately shift focus to something you can control, like your next shot or your pre-shot routine. Stockton would hit a bad shot, mutter something like “dang it” for a brief moment, then instantly start thinking about how to recover . It takes discipline, but try it: next time you duff one, allow a very short vent (literally count “one…two…”), then deep breath and move on. Treat it like a light switch: frustration off . The two-second rule stops a mistake from snowballing into a full-round funk. Practice a Post-Shot Routine – We all know about pre-shot routines, but a post-shot routine is just as important for handling emotions. This idea, taught by coaches like Pia Nilsson and Lynn Marriott (of Vision54 fame), is about creating a consistent response after every shot, good or badgolfgal-blog.com . For example, you might decide that after each shot you will: exhale, straighten your posture, put your club back in the bag calmly, and walk to the next shot with head held high. One amateur golfer swears by a routine of throwing her shoulders back and smiling immediately after a terrible shot, by the time she reaches her ball, she’s already let the negativity go. This “fake it till you make it” approach is surprisingly effective . By acting calm, confident, and unfazed – even if you’re fuming inside, you eventually start feeling that way for real. Essentially, don’t give the bad shot any outward drama. Pretend you’re on TV trying to look like Ernie or Tiger: no tantrums, no slumped shoulders. It creates a kind of emotional muscle memory that keeps you composed. Positive (or at Least Constructive) Self-Talk – Pay attention to the voice in your head after a bad shot. If it’s screaming “You idiot! You always screw up!”, that’s like pouring petrol on the fire. Instead, try to be your own caddie or coach. Say something encouraging or analytical: “Shake it off, you can still make a bogey and move on.” Or “Okay, that swing got quick; next time, smooth tempo.” Keep it neutral and forward-looking. Some players even use humor in self-talk: pull a Gary Player and quip, “Well, the more I practice that shot, the luckier I’ll get next time”. If you can smile at your own misfortune, it loses its sting. Remember, as sports psychology experts often remind us, sulking won’t get you anything, it only distracts you . Tell the negative committee in your head to sit down and let a problem-solving, positive voice take over. Focus on This Shot, Not the Last – Golf legend Ben Hogan had a famous saying: “The most important shot in golf is your next one.” It’s gospel truth. You can’t replay the last swing – it’s gone, history. What you can do is give full attention to the shot in front of you. Next time you’re stewing on a mistake, remind yourself of Hogan’s wisdom. Narrow your world to the present shot: assess your lie, pick a target, make a plan. Channel that frustration into determination to execute this one shot as best you can. By occupying your mind with the next task, you leave no room for anger about the past. It’s the ultimate reset button. Many pros have short memories for exactly this reason – a sort of golfing amnesia that keeps them focused on what they can still achieve, not what’s already on the card. Adjust Your Goals (Game Within the Game) – When a round is going off the rails, our initial score goal might be out the window. That’s when you should reframe your objectives to stay motivated and composed. For example, instead of “I want to break 90 today” (which is tough if you’ve just taken a triple-bogey), make a smaller goal: “I want to hit X fairways on the back nine,” or “No three-putts for the rest of the round.” By setting mini-goals, you shift from feeling like a failure to having something positive to strive for. One productive goal can simply be staying composed itself: challenge yourself with, “Let’s see if I can play the last 5 holes with a smile, no matter what happens.” This gives you back a sense of control. It turns the round into a learning experience rather than a trainwreck. As you meet these mini-goals, your mood will lift and your play often follows. Remember, every round, even the blow-ups, make for good stories at the 19th hole, especially if you handle them with grace. Use Your Playing Partners and Environment – Don’t underestimate the power of your golf buddies and the beautiful courses we play. Instead of silently boiling, engage with your group – crack a joke about your bad shot (as long as you’re not mid-tantrum). For instance, after duffing a tee shot that barely reaches the ladies’ tee, you might grin and say, “I just wanted to get a closer look at the wildlife on this hole. ” Often, your friends will laugh and the tension will dissolve. Golf in South Africa can also offer natural therapy: take a second to appreciate your surroundings. As one mental coach suggests, pause and appreciate the scenery or the fact that you’re out here – the smell of cut grass, the view of the ocean or veld – it shifts your focus from frustration to gratitude . A moment of gratitude (“How lucky am I to be playing here today?”) can flip your mindset from anger to enjoyment. The beauty of our courses, whether it’s the wild bushveld at Skukuza or the epic mountain backdrops at Leopard Creek, is part of why we love this game. Soak it in. It’s hard to stay angry when you’re thinking about how gorgeous the day is or how fun it is to spend time with friends. Turning Frustration into Fuel (and Enjoyment) In the end, managing anger on the course isn’t about never getting frustrated, it’s about not letting frustration run the show. You will hit bad shots; you will have bad rounds. But you also have a choice: you can slam clubs and sulk, or you can use the tips above to ride the wave and maybe even have a laugh at your own expense. Golf is as much a mental battle as a physical one, and learning to stay cool is a skill you can practice just like your swing. Next time you feel a red mist coming on after a duck-hook or missed three-footer, remember: you’re in control of your reaction . Take that breath. Do your two-second mini-tantrum and let it go . Remind yourself it’s just a game, a challenging game that no one ever truly masters. Replace the club slam with a determined focus on what comes next. Some days, you’ll manage this better than others, and that’s okay. By dealing with frustration in a healthier way, you’ll find you not only play better (or at least stop the score from imploding), but you’ll enjoy the game more. You might even start wearing that triple-bogey as a badge of honor in the clubhouse, turning it into an anecdote rather than a wound to lick. As the saying goes, golf is played on a five-inch course, the space between your ears. Conquer that, and you’ve really won, no matter what the scorecard says. - Two Young SA Composers Make Africa's Top 5
🎼🌍🎼🌍🎼🌍🎼🌍🎼🌍 Two young South African composers have just done something pretty amazing, and one of them is from right here in the North West! 🥳 Nico Smit, a Grade 10 learner from Potchefstroom Gimnasium, and Lizé Briel, a Stellenbosch-based professional, have both cracked the Top 5 leaderboard in the European Recording Orchestra (ERO) Intercontinental Call-for-Scores. That’s not something you see every day! This is the first time two South Africans have made the African leaderboard at the same time, showing the world what our young orchestral talent is capable of. Image: Potchefstroom Gimnasium Why the ERO leaderboard matters 🎬🎻 The ERO Call-for-Scores is no small-time thing. It’s run with the Film Scoring Academy of Europe and attracts entries from all over the globe, hundreds of them. Only the top five from each continent make the public leaderboard. By making the cut, Lizé and Nico automatically earn: A one-on-one lesson with a top Hollywood orchestrator, Dr Norman Ludwin Access to 15 game-music scoring masterclasses Discounts on expensive music software and tools And... a chance to win a paid string recording session in Europe! 🎧 Meet the composers 🎶 🎓 Lizé Briel – Stellenbosch’s rising star Lizé, just 25 years old, is already the composer-in-residence for the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra and holds a master’s degree from Stellenbosch University. She’s also made waves internationally, her piece Ocean Soundscape earned third place in a UN-affiliated art competition and was exhibited in New York. While her ERO submission blends rich string textures with African instruments like the uHadi and kiganda log xylophone, it does not include African flutes, as is sometimes misreported. 🧢 Nico Smit – Gimmie with a global ear Then there’s Nico, known as Nicholas Smit on the leaderboard, but simply “Nico” or “Smuts” to his Potch classmates. He’s only in Grade 10 at Potchefstroom Gimnasium, but already turning heads. He started composing at age 9, studied at NWU’s Conservatory, and by 12 had a piece performed by the NWU Symphony Orchestra. This year, he won first place in the International Youth Music Competition with The Birds and the Hunters. For the ERO, he submitted a seven-minute suite inspired by the Vredefort Dome meteorite, adjudicators loved his “film-ready orchestral colours”. Talk about thinking big! ☄️ Why this is a big deal for South African music 🇿🇦🎼 1. A first for the continent In the past, the African leaderboard was usually made up of composers from North and West Africa. This time, two out of five are South Africans – and that’s a proud moment for us all. 2. From school to stage Lizé represents the university-trained pros. Nico is still in school. Together, they show that South Africa’s music talent pipeline is working, from classrooms to concert halls. 3. Local inspiration Gimmies says more kids have signed up for arts classes since Nico’s news came out. Stellenbosch students also report more interest in orchestration classes after Lizé’s work was shown at the UN. It’s clear that young role models make a big difference. What’s next for these two? 🎬🎻 Final judging in August – The top composer from each continent will win a recording session with a European string ensemble. Global final in November – The six continental champs go head-to-head for a massive grand prize: a full 52-piece orchestra recording. 🎉 Potch Gimmies is already planning a “Music Monday” assembly to play Nico’s compositions. And Stellenbosch University will host a full evening of Lizé’s chamber works in September. From Potch to the world 🌍🎵 From the Cape Winelands to the banks of the Mooi River, South African music is hitting all the right notes. Whether Lizé’s flute textures make it to Sofia or Nico’s meteorite suite gets its time to shine in Studio 1, one thing’s clear: Our young composers are stepping up, and the world is listening. 🎼🌍🎼🌍🎼🌍🎼🌍🎼🌍 #SouthAfricanMusic #YoungComposers #NicoSmit #LizéBriel #PotchefstroomPride #StellenboschTalent
- Why Would a Pilot Cut Fuel Mid-Air? Unpacking the Air India AI171 Tragedy
When Air India flight AI171 crashed into a residential area of Ahmedabad on 12 June 2025, killing 260 people, the world was stunned. Image : The Go-To Guy Creations In the days that followed, grief turned to disbelief, and now to confusion, as a preliminary crash report reveals a haunting mystery: both engines were cut off just seconds after takeoff. Why? The early findings suggest that fuel to both engines was manually shut off by cockpit controls less than a minute after the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner reached its highest recorded speed, 180 knots. The report states that the fuel cutoff switches moved from “RUN” to “CUTOFF” one after the other, spaced just a second apart. With that, the engines died. And with no thrust, the aircraft was doomed. The voice recorder captured one of the pilots asking the other why the fuel had been cut. The reply: “I didn’t do it.” Could It Have Been an Accident? That’s the most troubling question facing aviation experts and investigators alike. Could a trained pilot, sitting in a billion-rand jetliner, flip the wrong switch? According to John Cox, a respected US aviation safety expert, the answer is no. “You can’t bump them and they move,” he said, referring to the engine fuel cutoff switches. These controls are typically protected by covers or require deliberate force to toggle, precisely because of how critical they are. So then, what happened? A Case of Mistaken Switches? One theory being floated is that the pilot might have believed he was lifting the landing gear lever, a routine step moments after takeoff, and instead pulled the fuel cutoff switch. It’s far-fetched, but not impossible. On many aircraft, including the Dreamliner, the landing gear and fuel controls are distinctly shaped and located. Still, under stress or disorientation, particularly in a high workload environment, a human error cannot be ruled out. Cognitive overload, spatial confusion, or a sudden distraction could lead to what’s called a “mode confusion” mistake: the right action on the wrong control. But there’s another wrinkle: both engines were shut down separately, one second apart. That doesn’t suggest a single mistaken movement, it may imply a deliberate sequence. Was It Intentional? The cockpit exchange recorded suggests surprise, even disbelief. One pilot was clearly unaware the switch had been flipped. But the lack of clarity about who flipped the switch, and why, leaves the door open to some chilling possibilities. Image : The Go-To Guy Creations Could it have been sabotage? A tragic mental health crisis? A fight or miscommunication in the cockpit? The investigation has not revealed the names behind the voices yet. But experts agree: if one pilot flipped the fuel switches on purpose, it would rank among the deadliest acts of pilot suicide in history, comparable to the Germanwings Flight 9525 disaster in 2015. However, at this stage, there is no evidence to support that theory. No distress signs, no prior concerns about crew mental health, and no known emergencies requiring a fuel cutoff. No Bird Strike, No Emergency The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) ruled out other common causes like bird strikes or engine fire. There was no emergency call until the engines were already failing. No indication of smoke, fire, or malfunction. The plane was in good condition. The fuel was clean. The engines were working, until they weren’t. One of the engines even began to restart during descent. But it was too late. A Catastrophic Human Error? For now, the likeliest cause appears to be a tragic cockpit error, or, worse, deliberate action by one of the pilots. It’s a possibility that’s hard to accept, but aviation history reminds us: the human factor is the most unpredictable part of any flight. Even with rigorous training, human beings are capable of mistakes. But two fuel switches? One after another? That’s what keeps investigators awake at night. Image : The Go-To Guy Creations Survivors and Aftermath Only one man survived: British national Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, who crawled out of the burning wreckage. His account paints a harrowing picture of confusion, flickering lights, and the instant impact as the plane slammed into a student hostel. His brother, Ajay, was among the dead. In total, 241 passengers and 19 people on the ground, mostly students and staff at Byramjee Jeejeebhoy Medical College, lost their lives. Air India has expressed its “deep sorrow” and is cooperating fully with authorities. But families want answers, not condolences. What Comes Next? The AAIB’s full investigation may take months, even a year, to conclude. Until then, speculation will fill the silence left by the cockpit voice recorder. What’s clear is this: something happened in that cockpit that shouldn’t have. Whether it was a momentary lapse, a systems failure, or a darker motive, one fact remains heartbreakingly certain, the passengers on AI171 never stood a chance once those engines were cut. And the world may never truly know why.

- 29 Kock Street: Alleged Illegal Guesthouse Operation in Potchefstroom
Despite lacking proper registration, a guesthouse at 29 Kock Street continues to operate openly; listed on Booking.com and promoted across various online platforms. This article investigates the ongoing contravention and its implications for the Potchefstroom community. Image (Google Maps): 29 Kock Street where Potch Guest House is currently operating Ongoing Construction, Notices and No Response We were made aware of this facility, advertised as Potch Guest House, by Ward 15 Councillor, Madra de Bruin, after they had contacted the JB Marks Municipality and sent a formal letter on the 24th of November 2024 already, but had received no response whatsoever. Having heard nothing still, we reached out to Councillor Swarts regarding this matter. The Communications Department replied to our query about this serious issue, where they informed us that “the owner has been served with two notices to remedy illegal land use. The first notice was [issued] on the 11th of December 2024.” When asked whether any action had been taken by the owner, we received no response to this day. Community Letter, No Proof of compliance The letter, composed and compiled by various members of the community alongside Councillor de Bruin, was handed over to the JB Marks Municipality on the 24th of November 2024. This letter was addressed to the office of the Speaker, the office of the Municipal Manager, and the office of the Executive Mayor. This letter states that the guesthouse has been operating as such without any formal application, approval, or input from the ward committee - as required by law. Before registering and operating as any company and/or business, there are certain boxes that need to be checked across the board. The participating ward members requested proof of zoning compliance, evidence of approved applications, sewerage capacity study, and a traffic impact study in the letter to Mr. Melamu, to no avail. The guesthouse is situated on the corner of Kock and Smit Street, and due to there being no traffic impact study, there is nearly a collision every day, as The High School for Girls Potchefstroom is right across the street as well. Booking.com might just be as guilty We headed over to Booking.com to take a look at this establishment and we were shocked for two reasons: How did this establishment manage to register on this platform? How is this guesthouse still operating? Image ( Booking.com ): A photo one of the guests posted There are certain requirements needed before an individual can register an establishment on Booking.com , the first being legal compliance. It clearly states that “the accommodation must be registered with relevant tax authorities and comply with all permits, licenses, and other governmental authorizations”. So how did this guesthouse manage to either evade these requirements or falsify the documents? In a country where fraud is at the order of the day, it’s not hard to imagine how the owners managed these ‘loopholes’. Image ( Booking.com ): The toilet in one of the rooms 100% Real reviews The reviews of Potch Guest House are not great either. Although there were some guests who praised the establishment, the majority had very bad experiences and didn’t shy away from sharing their experiences and warning other potential guests. Some guests even went so far as to suggest that they be closed down. Perhaps it shouldn’t have been opened in the first place. The owners and/or management team are very passive aggressive when it comes to replying to these reviews, even though Booking.com prides itself on “100% real reviews”. A picture is worth a thousand words, yet we are left speechless after reading only a few reviews and taking a look at the photos that real guests posted and shared on this booking platform. Image ( Booking.com ): The response to one of the reviews Image ( Booking.com ): This is the response when one client paid upfront for four evenings, but was then informed that the guesthouse does not have any space, despite live availability shown on the system. It seems that the guesthouse is still operating, despite the horrendous reviews and cries from the community. Apart from all the legalities, the building is also an eyesore, "The property's exterior has deteriorated substantially, negatively impacting the neighbourhood's aesthetic and property values." This is an ongoing story, as Councillor Madra keeps on following up with Councillor Swarts and relevant parties, but is left with nothing but radio silence. We hope to update you with some positive feedback from the JB Marks Municipality with regards to Potch Guest House and its alleged illegal operations in the near future. ____________________________ Johané van Dyk - Potchefstroom Photos and reviews of Potch Guest House

- Transform Your Potchefstroom Home with Quality Aluminum Windows
Glasfit Potchefstroom is a local, trusted glass specialist that does far more than just windscreen repairs. As part of the national Glasfit network, this community-minded business offers all types of glass services for homes and vehicles. In fact, Glasfit Potchefstroom has long been known as “a hub of innovation and quality” providing a wide range of glass solutions . Image : The Go-To Guy Creations They now offer premium aluminium window and door installations alongside their automotive services, giving homeowners local access to durable, high-quality windows. In Potchefstroom’s climate, with long, warm summers and short, cold dry winters , updating your home’s windows can make a big difference in comfort, security and energy costs. Whether your old windows are damaged or you simply want a modern look, Glasfit’s friendly, SABS‑approved service is ready to help. Why Replace or Repair Your Home Windows? Over time, even well‑built windows can let you down. Common signs it’s time to replace or repair windows include visible damage (cracks, fogged or broken glass), drafts or leaks, and poor operation. If windows are hard to open or close, or if you feel cold air coming in on windy days, they are no longer sealing properly . You may also notice condensation between panes (a sign the seal has failed) or rising energy bills, both of which mean your windows aren’t insulating well . Outside noise, faded interiors, or simply an outdated style are other clues. In short, “drafts, rising energy bills, condensation between panes, visible damage and difficulty operating” your windows are all signs you need new windows . Replacing old windows brings many benefits. New energy-efficient windows improve comfort and lower bills, reduce noise, and enhance curb appeal . They also increase home security (stronger glass and frames), and prevent ongoing damage from leaks or broken seals . For Potchefstroom homeowners, upgrading windows is an investment in a quieter, safer, more energy-efficient home that fits local needs. Choosing the Right Material: Aluminum vs. Wood vs. uPVC When planning window replacements, material choice is key. Each option has pros and cons: Aluminium Windows: Strong and Long-Lasting. Aluminium frames are incredibly strong, durable, and corrosion‑resistant, making them ideal for large windows and rugged weather . They hold up well in extreme heat, cold and sun. Aluminium is also 100% recyclable and UV-resistant . The frames allow slim sightlines and large panes (great for modern styles). On the downside, aluminium alone is a poor heat insulator, so modern aluminium windows incorporate thermal breaks and are glazed with double or triple panes to boost efficiency . Overall, aluminium offers an excellent middle ground: it’s lower-maintenance and more affordable than wood, yet stronger and more durable than most uPVC. Wood (Timber) Windows: Classic but High-Maintenance. Wood frames give a traditional, warm look and can be painted or stained to match any style . Wood is naturally insulating, but it requires constant care. If not properly sealed and repainted, timber will warp, rot or attract termites over time . This means higher long-term costs and more upkeep. Wood windows can last decades if meticulously maintained, but they may not be the best choice for Potchefstroom’s harsh sun and variable climate without regular repairs. uPVC Windows: Highly Insulating and Low-Cost. uPVC (rigid vinyl) windows provide excellent thermal insulation, often outperforming aluminium or wood in keeping heat in or out . They’re also very low-maintenance and generally less expensive. However, uPVC frames must be thicker than aluminium to achieve strength, so you lose some glass area. Over many years, uPVC can discolor or become brittle in UV, and it’s not biodegradable . In Potchefstroom’s strong sun, high‑quality uPVC helps with insulation but may still fade. Many homeowners find that aluminium with thermal breaks and quality coatings gives the best durability with comparable insulation when properly glazed. In short, aluminium windows give you exceptional strength, durability and design flexibility with minimal upkeep , while wood and uPVC each have their niche benefits. Glasfit can advise on the right choice for each home, but for many Potchefstroom projects, modern aluminium-framed windows strike the ideal balance of value and performance. Image : The Go-To Guy Creations Design and Style: Matching Your Home Windows shouldn’t just perform well, they should look great, too. When replacing windows, think about your home’s style. Aluminium frames can be powder-coated in almost any color or finish, including trendy woodgrain or metallic textures , so you can match a traditional Cape-Dutch plastered home or a sleek contemporary design. Consider frame color and profile: classic white frames suit many styles, while darker or wood-look frames add warmth. Also think about the window configuration you need. For example, Glasfit offers aluminium casement windows (hinged), sliding or fold-open models, and fully custom shapes . Large picture windows or sliding patio doors (as shown above) can flood your rooms with light and better connect indoor and outdoor spaces. If you have an older home, you might choose frames with grid patterns or heritage mullions; aluminium can mimic these details with the right finish. Whatever your design preference, Glasfit’s team will help ensure your new aluminium windows complement Potchefstroom’s character, from heritage cottages to modern developments . Energy Efficiency and Insulation Modern aluminium windows can keep your home comfortable in all seasons. Always choose double- or triple-glazed units and look for Low-E (low-emissivity) coatings. Low-E glass is treated to reflect heat: it keeps the summer sun’s heat outside and your winter warmth inside. In fact, Glasfit Potchefstroom offers tinted and energy-efficient windows that “block harmful UV rays, keep your home cooler in summer and warmer in winter”. Equally important are frame features: high-quality aluminium frames include thermal breaks (insulating strips inside the frame) that prevent hot and cold transfer. As one glazing expert explains, when paired with double glazing and Low-E, these features “keep your home at a comfortable temperature and minimise your energy bill”. In Potchefstroom’s climate , good insulation means less dependence on heating in winter and air-conditioning in summer. Also ensure the installation is airtight with proper weatherstripping to stop any drafts from sneaking in. Durability and Maintenance One of the biggest advantages of aluminium is its toughness. Aluminium windows are highly resistant to corrosion, warping, and decay . They won’t swell or rot in humidity, and properly coated frames will withstand Potchefstroom’s strong sun without peeling. By contrast, timber frames can suffer irreversible damage (rot or termite) if neglected, and uPVC can become brittle or discolored over many years . What’s more, aluminium’s strength makes it an excellent choice for large sliding doors and wide windows without bulky frames. Maintenance is also easier. Aluminium and uPVC both require very little care . Typically you only need to wipe down the frames with a cloth to remove dust and dirt. The factory finish will not flake off, so you won’t be sanding or repainting like with timber . In short, aluminium windows give you years of trouble-free use : just occasional cleaning and inspection of seals is enough. This durability and low upkeep is ideal for busy families who want sturdy, long-lived windows that keep looking new. - Future Radio Brings the Breakout Tour to Potch - 17 July
Future Radio, the forward-thinking rock duo from South Africa, is heading to Potchefstroom for a one-night-only gig at The Texas Bar. Entry is free, the doors swing open early, and if past shows are anything to go by, the amps will be cranked up and the crowd won’t leave quietly. What to Expect on the Night The show kicks off at 20:00 sharp, so best get there early unless you enjoy the sound of a band starting without you. Entry is free, and yes, you read that right, so there’s really no excuse not to pitch up. Grab a cold one, order one of those massive burgers they’re famous for, and settle in for some no-nonsense live music. The Texas Bar, located at 82 Steve Biko Street, has developed something of a reputation: beers the size of your face, burgers that require both hands and a battle plan, and a staff known for being as cheeky as they are quick with the drinks. It’s also quietly becoming one of the more solid spots for emerging rock artists to cut their teeth. Who Are Future Radio? Future Radio is made up of vocalist/guitarist Johnny Lategan and guitarist/visual artist Drikus Roets. Together, they’ve coined their style as “future rock” a blend of alternative, punk, and riff rock with a visual twist. Each song is more than just a tune; it’s part of a bigger story. Think of it like Netflix for your ears, except with louder guitars and less chill. Their shows combine music and visuals into themed episodes that build over time into full “seasons”. It’s concept rock, but not the kind that disappears into its own artistic abyss. These guys are storytellers as much as they are musicians – and they’re not afraid to crank the volume while they’re at it. Image : The Go-To Guy Creations Key Considerations for Your Renovation Renovating a home or office requires careful planning. To ensure a smooth, successful project, consider these important tips: Set a Realistic Budget and Contingency: Determine early on how much you can spend, including all costs (materials, labor, permits, and even temporary accommodations). Build in a 10–15% buffer for unforeseen issues . This prevents surprises and lets you decide where to invest or save. As one guide notes, “prepare for unforeseen problems by setting aside extra funds and time” to reduce stress and keep the project on track . Choose Quality Materials Wisely: Material choices greatly affect both cost and outcome . Invest in quality where it counts (like structural elements or waterproofing) and consider durable but cost-effective options elsewhere . UB60 Renovations can advise on materials that fit your vision without overspending, ensuring a beautiful result with no unwelcome surprises . Planning finishes ahead also helps avoid delays and keeps you within budget . Focus on Functionality: Think about how you use the space day-to-day. Lay out rooms for efficient flow and storage (for example, a kitchen “work triangle” between stove, sink, and fridge). Design every element to support its intended use , a taller backsplash for easy cleaning, or extra outlets in a study for convenience. Hiring an experienced local renovator makes a difference here: UB60 has expertise in functional design to ensure your remodel isn’t just attractive but genuinely practical for your lifestyle . Build a Realistic Timeline: Discuss with your contractor how long each phase will take and set target start and finish dates . Account for preparatory steps (clearing rooms, ordering materials, obtaining permits) and external factors like weather or holidays . Include some buffer time, since delays are common. Good communication is key here , check in regularly on progress and adjust as needed so you’re not living in limbo longer than necessary . Choose a Reputable Contractor: Verify that any contractor or handyman you hire has the proper experience, licenses, and insurance . A seasoned professional will handle surprises better and meet safety regulations. Check references or portfolios, and read online reviews , a track record of positive feedback and on-time completion is a strong sign of reliability . In Potchefstroom, a local reputation means a lot; a company like UB60 that is “well-regarded in the community” is typically safer to trust with your home . They even earn praise for quick response in emergencies, demonstrating how they care for clients . Maintain Clear Communication: From the first consultation, notice how well the contractor listens and explains plans. Good communicators keep you informed at every step and welcome your input. UB60 is known for its professionalism and transparency, they respond quickly to urgent issues and keep clients updated throughout the project . Ultimately, choose a team you feel comfortable with, since they will be working in your home. By keeping these points in mind, you can guide your renovation successfully. - Potch Academy Offers Natural Hair Removal Course with a Sweet Twist - 22 August
SAAHST College in Potchefstroom is offering a two-day short course that might just make you rethink what sugar is good for. The college’s next short course, focused on the ancient art of sugaring (not the kind you stir into tea), will run from 22 to 23 August 2025. What’s Sugaring Anyway? Sugaring is a natural hair removal method that’s been around since the days of Cleopatra, because apparently, even the ancient Egyptians couldn’t stand a rogue leg hair. The process involves a paste made from sugar, lemon juice and water, applied to the skin and whipped off in the direction of hair growth. The appeal? It’s less painful than waxing, gentle on the skin and has a solid track record of keeping ingrowns at bay. If you’re in the beauty business, or even just fascinated by the idea of yanking out hair with dessert ingredients, this one’s for you. Course Breakdown The course includes both theory and practical training, so don’t expect to just sit back and sweet talk your way through it. You’ll need to complete: A portfolio of evidence A practical examination A theoretical examination It’s designed for beauty professionals, salon assistants, or anyone keen to expand their offering with an eco-friendly treatment clients actually like. When and Where Date: 22 – 23 August 2025 Venue: SAAHST College, 59 Dr James Moroka St, Potchindustria, Potchefstroom Booking deadline: 8 August Ticket pricing: Not specified, but you can’t put a price on silky smooth credibility Want In? Here’s How to Reach Them Whether you’re ready to register or just have questions about flicking sugar onto skin, the folks at SAAHST have you covered: Phone: 018 294 9000 WhatsApp: 064-624-1548 Email: shortcourses@saahst.co.za If you're after a treatment that’s good for the skin, easy on the planet and makes clients feel fabulous, sugaring might be the sweet solution. - Deadly Dozen Potchefstroom: Where Fitness Gets Seriously Real - 27 September
Potch isn’t usually the place you'd associate with battle cries and muscle burn, but come spring, that’s exactly what’s going down at, NWU McArthur Stadium, 71 Beyers Naudé Avenue. The Deadly Dozen fitness festival is rolling into town, and it's not here to play nice. This isn’t your average jog-in-the-park affair. It’s 12 rounds of sweat, suffering, and surprisingly enthusiastic high-fives. If your idea of a good time includes deadlifts, bear crawls, and devil’s presses, with a 400m dash thrown in between for fun, you might have just found your happy place. What’s the Deal? Deadly Dozen is essentially a love letter to pain. It’s a test of grit that combines track running with brutal fitness stations. The format? Simple, in a sadistic kind of way: 12 x 400m track runs (called “Journeys”) 12 x fitness challenges (“Labours”) in between each run Each Labour is the kind of thing that makes personal trainers giggle: 240m Farmers Carry 60 Deadlifts 60 Lunges 60 Snatches 60m Burpee Broad Jumps 60 Goblet Squats 240m Front Carry 60 Push Presses 120m Bear Crawl 60 Clean & Press 180m Overhead Carry 20 Devils Press Basically, if it hurts, it’s probably in there. Not Just a Race Deadly Dozen is being billed as a “fitness festival”, which means it’s more than just lifting heavy things and trying not to collapse. You can expect a strong sense of community, a bit of banter, and a crowd that’ll cheer even if you’re crawling instead of running. It’s for seasoned athletes, weekend warriors, and even folks who just want to test themselves before limping back to the beer tent. There’s also a team option, so you don’t have to face the suffering alone, bring your gym buddies or recruit strangers on the day. Either way, misery loves company. For the Little Ones Kids under 12 can tag along for free, though maybe don’t get them doing devil’s presses just yet. Tickets and Details Tickets range from R100 to R1996 depending on how deep you’re willing to go. You can grab yours at: 👉 Webtickets Event Page And if you need to chat, complain, or ask what exactly a snatch is, here’s how to reach the team: Website: www.deadlydozen.co.za Facebook: Deadly Dozen Whether you’re chasing a new personal best or just keen to survive all 12 labours without crying (publicly), Deadly Dozen promises a day full of sweat, strength, and stories you’ll be telling at every braai for months.
