The Merafong City Local Municipality   issued  a Road Closure Notice on December 8, 2025 , informing residents and road users that a section of the R500 road has been temporarily closed  following the formation of a large sinkhole. The collapse, which worsened  recently, created  a significant hazard in Carletonville that requires immediate intervention . In response, a detour route has been created  to safely redirect traffic around the affected area. Traffic officials have placed  clear signage and barricades to guide vehicles through the temporary route. Where possible, motorists are advised  to avoid the road completely. Call for Public Vigilance The Municipality urged  road users to adhere to several safety measures: Avoid  the affected section where possible and follow  the official detour route.
