The City of Matlosana, through its Directorate of Planning and Human Settlements, has launched a door-to-door programme to distribute long-awaited title deeds to residents in Kanana. The initiative is aimed at strengthening housing rights and providing families with security of tenure. Distribution in Kanana Extension 12 On 19 August, residents of Kanana Extension 12 were the first to benefit from this rollout. The Human Settlements Unit, supported by Cllr. Portia Mtshawula, MMC for Planning and Human Settlements, and Cllr. MA Mokgatla, Ward 26 Councillor, handed over title deeds directly to households. The list of eligible beneficiaries included hundreds of houses in the extension, with residents encouraged to be at home to personally receive their documents. Those unable to collect on the day were assured they could still receive their deeds from the municipal Housing Office in Kanana. Extension 7 and 11 Beneficiaries On 20 August, the programme extended to Kanana Extensions 7 and 11 under the oversight of Cllr. IM Mokhele, Ward 27 Councillor. Similar to Extension 12, the distribution took place from 09:00 to 15:00, with officials visiting households identified in advance. For Extension 7, a large number of homes were confirmed as eligible, while residents of Extension 11 also had the chance to secure their housing rights with deeds issued directly to them. Commitment to Housing Security The City emphasized that title deeds form an essential part of economic empowerment, enabling residents not only to gain legal ownership of their homes but also to access financial opportunities linked to property ownership. Cllr. Mtshawula stressed that this programme reflects the municipality’s ongoing commitment to improving the lives of residents through secure housing and proper urban planning. The City of Matlosana has taken significant steps toward advancing local economic development through two major initiatives: the graduation of water management professionals and the empowerment of informal traders. Delivering the keynote address, MMC for Local Economic Development, Cllr. Wesley Kgang, underscored the vital importance of water, describing it as “the foundation of life.” He acknowledged the challenges of ensuring universal access to clean water, urging both communities and professionals to preserve and manage water resources responsibly. Mbuso Management Solutions’ Managing Director, Mr. Daddy Khusela, praised the graduates for their dedication, calling the achievement a milestone in the ongoing effort to address water challenges across communities. He expressed confidence that the newly qualified professionals will play a crucial role in ensuring sustainable water management. The initiative combined training, certification, and stock grants to boost local entrepreneurs. Approximately 50 participants completed training in basic retail practices and received certificates of competence. Of these, 25 informal traders were each awarded start-up stock valued at R3,000, while formal traders received stock worth R5,000. The Executive Mayor, Cllr. Fikile Mahlophe, attended the event alongside Cllr. Wesley Kgang. Addressing participants, the Mayor stressed that adherence to municipal by-laws is essential for the sustainability and growth of businesses. Image: Saints Christian School Potchefstroom With one hard-fought win (1–0) and two close draws (1–1 and 0–0), our girls finished the tournament as proud runners-up in what proved to be one of the most tightly contested competitions of the season. This achievement is even more special considering the level of opposition and the pressure of playing at provincial level. Every player gave their all, representing Saints with passion, teamwork, and sportsmanship. We are incredibly proud of these young athletes. Rachel Laskin: a life that ended in Potchefstroom Rachel Laskin was born to a Jewish family in Eastern Europe (sources place her in the Polish town of Opatów). As a young woman she moved to London, where she encountered Joseph Silver, by turns her handler, “husband,” and abuser. Van Onselen’s archival work uncovered records showing that Silver had Rachel committed to Valkenberg Mental Hospital in the Cape in 1901 . She remained institutionalised in South Africa until her death in 1945 , by which time she had been transferred to Witrand, Potchefstroom. By the mid-20th century Witrand Psychiatric Hospital  in Potchefstroom had become one of the country’s principal state psychiatric institutions (opened in 1923). Today, the hospital’s official site places it in Potchefstroom’s Deppe Street and lists hundreds of beds for long-term psychiatric care, the kind of setting where a patient like Rachel could have spent her final years. Multiple historical accounts note that Rachel died in 1945 in a mental hospital in Potchefstroom . A Polish-language academic write-up of van Onselen’s work states plainly that “in 1945 … ‘Lizzie Silver,’ the ‘wife’ of Józef Lis … died in a mental hospital in the small town of Potchefstroom.” A South African review likewise introduces van Onselen’s book with Rachel’s “desperate story,” emphasising that she died insane and incarcerated, friendless, far from the land of her birth . Silver’s modus operandi  was cruelty.
