  • Potchefstroom se Honde Steel die Skou by NG Kerk Mooirivier Basaar - 26 Julie

Beste toerkies Kan jou hond sit, rol, poot gee, of soos ‘n ninja spring? Hier’s jou kans om dit te wys. Bonuspunte as jy hom laat dans. Kontak Erica by 079-502-7486 as jy meer info wil hê. So, bring jou hond, trek hom dalk aan (of jouself), en kom wys hoe lyk die trots van Potch se hondewêreld. En as jy nie ‘n hond het nie – kom kyk, lag en cheer aan. Want by dié basaar blaf ons almal saam. The Go-To Guy - Image

  • Vegetarian and Vegan: The Differences and How They Impact Your Health

🌱🍎 🌱🍎 🌱🍎 🌱🍎 🌱🍎 More people are switching to vegetarian or vegan diets these days – whether it’s for health, environmental, or ethical reasons. But what’s the difference between the two, and how does it affect your health? What’s the Difference Between Vegetarian and Vegan? 🥦 ✅ Vegetarian: Vegetarians don’t eat meat, fish, or poultry. But they still include animal by-products  like eggs, milk, cheese, and yoghurt in their diets. ✅ Vegan: Vegans cut out all animal products – no meat, no dairy, no eggs, and not even honey. Their diet is fully plant-based . Both diets focus heavily on fruits, veggies, grains, legumes, nuts, and seeds – but vegans go the extra mile in avoiding anything animal-related. Health Benefits 🌿 Both vegetarian and vegan diets, if planned properly, can have great health benefits: 💪 Lower risk of heart disease  – Less saturated fats from animal products means better heart health. 🩸 Reduced risk of type 2 diabetes  – Whole plant foods help manage blood sugar levels. ⚖️ Weight management  – Plant-based diets are often lower in calories and high in fibre, helping you stay fuller for longer. 🌾 Rich in fibre, vitamins, and minerals  – Especially when eating a variety of whole foods. But… What Are the Risks? ⚠️ While these diets have great benefits, they do come with some challenges if not managed properly: 🥩 Protein Intake: Without meat, it’s important to get enough plant-based protein from beans, lentils, nuts, tofu, and soy products. ☀️ Vitamin B12 Deficiency: B12 is mostly found in animal products. Vegans especially might need B12 supplements or fortified foods. 🦴 Calcium and Iron: Skipping dairy or meat can lower calcium and iron intake. Dark leafy greens, nuts, and plant-based milk can help fill the gap. 🧠 Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Important for brain health – usually found in fish. Vegans can get it from flaxseeds, chia seeds, and walnuts. What About the Environmental Impact? 🌍 One of the big reasons people choose these diets is the impact on the environment. Producing meat, especially beef, uses a lot of land, water, and energy.Plant-based diets are seen as more sustainable , with a smaller carbon footprint. Is It for Everyone? 🤔 Vegetarian and vegan diets can work for most people – but they do require some planning. If you’re thinking of making the switch, it’s a good idea to: ✅ Do your research ✅ Speak to a dietitian or nutritionist ✅ Make sure you’re getting all the essential nutrients It’s not just about cutting things out – it’s about replacing them properly. At the end of the day, vegetarian and vegan diets can be very healthy if balanced right. The key is variety, proper planning, and making sure your body gets everything it needs. Whether it’s for your health, the animals, or the planet – going plant-based is a personal journey, but one worth exploring. 🌱🍎 🌱🍎 🌱🍎 🌱🍎 🌱🍎 #HealthyLiving   #Vegetarian   #Vegan   #PlantBased   #NutritionMatters   #PotchLife   #PotchGazette   #TheGoToGuy   #StroomStories   #Potchefstroom   #Sportstroom

  • Was Food Healthier 100 Years Ago? A Look at How Our Diets Have Changed

🍎🍗 🍎🍗 🍎🍗 🍎🍗 🍎🍗 Over the years, the way we farm, cook, and eat has changed massively. From small-scale farming and fresh produce to mass production and processed foods, it’s clear that what we eat today is very different from what people ate 100 years ago. But is today’s food actually healthier? Farming Back Then vs Now 🌾 A century ago, most food was grown organically – no chemicals, no fancy machines, just farmers and their land. Families had small gardens and farms producing natural, chemical-free vegetables, fruits, and grains. These days, to feed growing populations, farmers rely heavily on chemicals like pesticides and fertilisers.  Genetically modified crops (GMOs) are common because they resist pests and grow faster. But, with that comes health risks – some chemicals and GM foods have been linked to allergies and health problems. Meat – From Grass to Growth Hormones 🐄 Meat production has changed too. In the past, animals roamed free, fed on natural grass, and were slaughtered in small numbers. Now, large factories raise animals in bulk using chemical-packed feed and, at times, growth hormones like Zeranol and Testosterone to speed things up. These hormones boost meat and milk production but have been linked to cancer risks. Simply put, the meat people ate 100 years ago was cleaner and safer. Processed Food – Easy but Risky 🍔🥤 Today, more than 75% of global food sales come from processed foods. Busy lifestyles, fast-food chains, and aggressive marketing have pushed many away from traditional diets rich in nuts, grains, and fresh veggies. Processed foods are often loaded with sugar, fat, and preservatives, which can lead to obesity, diabetes, cancer, and heart problems. In contrast, traditional diets back then were naturally nutritious and packed with fibre, vitamins, and minerals. Food Was Cheaper and More Accessible 🌽 Back then, food was grown at home or sourced locally. People ate what was available, fresh and seasonal. Now, due to urbanisation, many live in cities and depend on supermarkets – where healthy food comes with a hefty price tag. Fresh fruits and vegetables have become expensive, forcing many to choose cheaper, less healthy options. This has increased cases of undernutrition and malnutrition, especially in low-income communities. Environmental Impact on Nutrition 🌍 Pollution and industrial farming have also lowered the nutritional value of modern crops. Studies show that soil mineral depletion means today’s crops have fewer vitamins and minerals than the ones grown 100 years ago. Air pollution further stunts crop growth and reduces nutritional content, leaving us with less healthy food on our plates. What About Longer Life Expectancy? ⏳ Research shows that traditional diets filled with grains, fruits, and vegetables are linked to better health and longer life. These foods fight inflammation, lower body weight, and reduce the risk of chronic diseases. Today’s processed food choices, however, contribute to the rising number of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) like heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. Are Modern Foods Really Safer? 🤔 Some argue that today’s food is safer because of strict regulations and added nutrients in processed foods. It’s true – food standards and nutritional guidelines have improved. Supplements also help fill the nutritional gaps. Still, it’s important to remember that most processed foods lose essential nutrients during manufacturing. Added sugars, unhealthy fats, and preservatives do more harm than good when consumed long-term. Globalisation Brings Variety – But At What Cost? 🌎 Globalisation means we now have access to foods from all over the world – from sushi to pasta. But most of these global favourites are processed, making it harder to stick to healthy, traditional foods. Final Thoughts – Was Food Healthier 100 Years Ago? ✅ Looking at the facts, food 100 years ago was naturally healthier. Organic farming, chemical-free meat, and traditional diets gave people the nutrition they needed without the risks of modern processed foods. Today, while regulations and technology have made food safer in some ways, the rise of processed foods, chemicals in farming, and environmental damage have reduced the nutritional value of what we eat. At the end of the day, going back to basics – more fresh produce, less processed food – might just be what we need to live healthier lives. 🍎🍗 🍎🍗 🍎🍗 🍎🍗 🍎🍗 #HealthyEating   #TraditionalFood   #ModernFoodChoices   #FoodForThought   #SouthAfricanLiving

In today’s competitive landscape, choosing the right marketing partner can make or break your business. With numerous agencies and freelancers claiming to be experts in the field, it can be overwhelming to identify which partner will truly align with your goals. In this blog post, we’ll explore the essential qualities and characteristics to look for when selecting a marketing partner, ensuring that your brand receives the best possible support for growth. Understanding What a Marketing Partner Can Do for You A marketing partner serves as an extension of your team. They are responsible for developing strategies that enhance brand visibility, drive customer engagement, and ultimately generate leads and sales. A good marketing partner will understand your business objectives, target audience, and competitive landscape. This understanding is crucial for creating campaigns that resonate with your audience. Let’s take a look at some of the core functions a reliable marketing partner should fulfill: Develop comprehensive marketing strategies Create engaging content tailored to your audience Manage social media accounts and online presence Execute data-driven campaigns with measurable results 1. Experience and Expertise When looking for a reliable marketing partner, their experience and expertise should be one of your primary considerations. A seasoned agency or professional will have a proven track record in the industry. Look for partners who: Have experience in your specific industry Provide case studies demonstrating successful past campaigns Utilize up-to-date marketing tactics that reflect current trends Consider conducting interviews and asking potential partners about their previous work. A reliable partner should be willing to share their successes and even their lessons learned from less successful campaigns. 2. Understanding Your Goals and Culture A top-notch marketing partner won’t just take a cookie-cutter approach to your business. They should invest time in understanding your goals, brand voice, and company culture. Here are a few points to consider: Do they ask insightful questions during initial meetings? Are they genuinely interested in your business's success? Can they demonstrate flexibility in their approach based on your unique needs? When you meet with potential partners, observe their willingness to adapt their strategies and understand your company’s specific challenges. A partner that takes the time to understand you will be more effective at meeting your needs. 3. Flexibility and Scalability Your marketing partner should have the ability to adapt strategies based on performance metrics and changing market conditions. As your business grows, your marketing needs may evolve as well. Look for partners that offer: Scalability in their services to match your growth Ability to pivot strategies based on data analysis Resources that allow for quick adjustments in campaign execution A reliable partner will not only provide a set of services but will also engage in ongoing assessments, ensuring your marketing efforts remain relevant and effective. 4. Clear Communication and Reporting Effective communication is the backbone of any successful partnership. Your marketing partner should prioritize transparent communication. Key aspects to evaluate include: Regular updates on campaign performance Clear explanations of strategies and methods used Availability for questions and consultations Ask potential partners about their reporting processes. They should provide clear insights and analytics that allow you to understand the effectiveness of their efforts. This will help ensure everyone remains aligned on goals and results. 5. Measurable Results Ultimately, the purpose of hiring a marketing partner is to achieve measurable results. A trustworthy partner should have a focus on Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) that align with your business objectives. Look for: Partners that provide metrics and analytics to measure success Strategies that incorporate A/B testing and iterative improvements Evidence of return on investment (ROI) from previous campaigns It is crucial to set specific goals and ensure your marketing partner is committed to tracking and reporting on these metrics. Doing so will allow you to adapt your strategies based on real data. Building a Long-Term Relationship Establishing a solid and trustworthy relationship with your marketing partner can lead to long-term success. Investing time in choosing the right partner will be worth it. Not only will they help to elevate your business, but they can become a crucial part of your team. Consider organizations like the go-to guy potchefstroom that excel in building collaborative partnerships. • Potch vir Dorp van die Jaar? ‘n Goue Kans of ‘n Goeie Grap?

  • SportStroom Episode 20: Yolindi Botes – A Rising Hockey Star with a Big Dream

In Episode 20 of SportStroom ,Drikus introduces viewers to Yolindi Botes, a 15-year-old Grade 10 learner from Hoër Volkskool Potchefstroom who is blazing her trail on the hockey field. Recently selected to participate in the Elite Invitational Hockey Tour in the Netherlands, Yolindi’s story is one of passion, perseverance, and purpose. From Netball Dropout to Hockey Devotee Yolindi first picked up a hockey stick in Grade 4 after realizing that netball wasn’t her game. What began as a fallback sport quickly turned into a passion. Though hockey wasn’t a big deal at her primary school, by high school, Yolindi had made the decision to pursue the sport seriously. Over the years, the sport has become more competitive and intense. She laughs about the irony that while hockey isn’t technically a contact sport, injuries and bruises are inevitable. From ankle knocks to a ball ricocheting off her shoulder during a 16-yard play, she has taken it all in stride. Tour Experience and National Selection A recent highlight in Yolindi’s journey was her participation in a school tour to Menlopark, Pretoria, where she played several games against strong city schools. Though her team didn’t win all their matches, they gained valuable experience and improved teamwork. It was during this tour that Yolindi received news that would change her life, she was selected, along with four other teammates, to join the South African team for the Elite Invitational Tour to the Netherlands. An International Dream with a Price Tag The Netherlands tour is not just a game-changer, it’s a dream come true. But for dreams to take flight, they need support. The total cost of the tour is R55,500, and Yolindi and her family are currently fundraising to make this trip possible. She has set up a BackaBuddy campaign and is exploring GoFundMe to allow international donations. During the tour, she will not only play matches but also attend a World Cup game and receive coaching from international players, a golden opportunity to grow her skill set. Hockey, Teamwork, and Grit As a midfielder, Yolindi plays a pivotal role on the field, both defending and supporting attacks. She explains the structure of hockey positions and the technicalities of playing on different surfaces, from the smooth synthetic "Astro" turf to the less predictable grass fields. Despite tough competition, Yolindi believes her team, the under-16A squad from Hoër Volkskool, has the discipline and potential to make a name for themselves. Her reflections on adapting to surfaces, match preparation, and the mental toll of the sport reveal a maturity beyond her years. Beyond the Game Yolindi is not just focused on her performance but also on team morale and self-improvement. She openly discusses how she has worked on her attitude, shifting from frustration to leadership, motivating teammates, managing emotions, and building trust. Her role model is Shona, a university-level player representing South Africa, who has inspired Yolindi to keep reaching higher. A Call for Support With her sights set on October’s Netherlands tour, Yolindi needs community backing to get there. Every contribution counts. Whether it’s R10 or R1000, your donation can help a passionate young athlete represent South Africa on an international stage. If you or your organisation would like to contribute, please reach out to The Go-To Guy  for details. Let’s rally behind Yolindi and make her dream a reality. • The Financial Foundations – Why Every Business Needs an Accountant

Whether you're a solo entrepreneur in Ikageng, a retailer in the CBD, or a small manufacturer in Baillie Park, the success of your business hinges on financial clarity. Yet, many local businesses face mounting questions about compliance, tax, and cash flow, often without the guidance to answer them. In an increasingly regulated and competitive environment, professional accountants, like those at Wave Breaking Accountants , play a vital role in helping businesses not only stay afloat, but thrive. Image: The Go-To Guy Creations This article explores the essential foundations that every business needs: from record-keeping and cash flow, to taxes and VAT registration. These aren’t just administrative checkboxes, they are building blocks of financial stability. Financial Records: The Cornerstone of Compliance and Clarity In South Africa, businesses are legally required to maintain financial records for a minimum of five years . These records include invoices, receipts, cash books, payroll files, tax returns, and bank statements. The aim is not only to comply with SARS regulations, but to ensure that business owners have a clear understanding of their financial position at all times. Many Potchefstroom businesses still operate with a mix of manual and informal systems. This results in inconsistent records, missed expenses, and exposure during tax audits.  Accountants step in by: Setting up reliable record-keeping systems, Digitising and archiving historical documents, Reconciling monthly income and expenses, Ensuring all transactions have supporting documentation . Cash Flow Management: Understanding Money In vs. Money Out Cash flow  is the number one reason small businesses in South Africa fail. A 2023 Business Partners SME Confidence Index reported that 60% of local businesses face ongoing cash flow challenges, even when profitable on paper. Accountants help businesses develop real-time visibility into their cash flow through: Monthly cash flow forecasting, Scenario planning (e.g., impact of late payments or price increases), Advising on reserve building, Identifying spending leaks and inefficiencies. For example, a retail store in Potchefstroom might look profitable, but delayed supplier payments or slow-moving inventory could choke cash availability. An accountant can help model different solutions: faster invoicing cycles, price adjustments, or supplier renegotiations. Image: The Go-To Guy Creations Tax Obligations: Avoiding Penalties and Gaining Peace of Mind Taxation for South African SMEs includes income tax , provisional tax , PAYE , UIF , and potentially SARS eFiling  admin, all of which come with strict deadlines and regulations. Many small businesses under-report or file late, leading to penalties of up to 200%  or frozen bank accounts. An accountant mitigates this risk by: Registering and updating all relevant tax profiles, Ensuring timely submissions of provisional and annual tax returns, Calculating deductions like home office, fuel, and depreciation, Claiming SBC (Small Business Corporation) tax relief when eligible. Wave Breaking Accountants also assist in reconciling PAYE and UIF, submitting EMP201 and EMP501 reports, and preparing IRP5 certificates for employees. Their tax services ensure business owners can focus on operations, not paperwork. VAT Registration: Knowing When It’s Time to Register Businesses in South Africa must register for VAT  once their annual turnover exceeds R1 million  in any 12-month period. However, many entrepreneurs are unaware that SARS can backdate registration  and apply penalties. Beyond compliance, VAT registration also brings potential financial benefits, including: Claiming back input VAT on expenses, Improving supplier credibility, Meeting procurement requirements with large buyers. Accountants assess whether voluntary VAT registration is beneficial for businesses under the threshold (minimum R50,000 turnover to apply). For instance, a Potchefstroom-based service provider buying equipment and paying rent may benefit from early registration. An accountant will handle: Registration with SARS, Structuring pricing models for VAT, Filing bi-monthly VAT201 returns, Reconciling VAT on purchases and sales. Without expert help, VAT mismanagement is common. Incorrect claims, missed deadlines, or duplicate submissions can trigger SARS audits. Wave Breaking Accountants ensures all filings are clean and audit-proof. In Summary: Why Every Local Business Needs Financial Guidance Business owners in Potchefstroom wear many hats. But financial management is too important to approach casually. With expert support from firms like Wave Breaking Accountants, businesses gain: Better decision-making through accurate records, Reliable cash flow forecasts, Penalty-free tax compliance, Strategic VAT planning. More than just number-crunchers, accountants are partners in sustainable growth. They translate financial complexity into clear, actionable advice tailored to your business size, sector, and goals.
