  • Hope, Healing, and Homes: The Heartbeat of the Orkney & Klerksdorp Animal Shelter

Despite facing challenges earlier this week, the shelter remains unwavering in its mission, to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome animals who deserve a second chance. Each day brings new stories of hope, love, and unwavering dedication from the team that refuses to let hardship dim their purpose. This week’s updates reflect not just recovery, but the strength of a community united by compassion. From repairing damages after a recent break-in to preparing for upcoming events and celebrating remarkable individuals, the shelter’s story continues to inspire. Overcoming Setbacks with Unity 💪 Just two days ago, the shelter experienced a break-in  that left the office area damaged and stripped of electrical equipment. Windows and burglar bars were broken, leaving a disheartening sight for the volunteers who arrived early that morning. Thankfully, every animal remained safe and unharmed , and the shelter immediately prioritized their welfare. While the fingerprint investigation took place, operations were temporarily paused, but support from the public poured in. Community members offered: 🧰 Materials and labour  to repair damages 💵 Donations  to replace stolen items 🐕 Encouragement and messages of support  on social media The shelter expressed heartfelt gratitude to everyone who continues to stand by them. Their recovery is a reminder that compassion and unity can overcome any setback . Adoption Spotlight: Hopeful Hearts Waiting for Homes 🏡 Even in difficult times, the shelter’s daily goal never changes, helping animals find loving homes. Every face tells a story of resilience, and every adoption represents a fresh start. Among the animals waiting for adoption are: Kaedo 🐶  – A young, friendly Bull Terrier cross who adores human attention. Ray 🐕  – A loyal Jack Russell cross who thrives on love and comfort. Fifi 🐾  – A cheerful Dachshund x Min Pin whose happy energy brightens any room. Blu 💙  – A gentle young mixed-breed dog with expressive eyes. Rocky 🐕‍🦺  – A calm and loyal Africanis cross who just wants to belong. Joker 😄  – A playful Pitbull-Collie cross with a contagious smile. Luca 💕  – A shy but affectionate female who dreams of a peaceful home. The shelter proudly announced that Loki , their adorable foster pup, has been adopted , a moment that lifted everyone’s spirits. Loki’s adoption serves as a reminder of why the shelter continues its work: to ensure that every animal experiences love and belonging. 📞 Adoption Contact:  074 306 9811 🌍 Website:   orkneykldanimalshelter.co.za Looking Ahead: Eden’s Evening Market 🌙 Excitement is building for the upcoming Eden’s Evening Market  on 31 October , where the shelter will host a stall to raise funds and meet supporters. 📅 Event Details: 🕒 15:00 – 21:00 📍 Eden Garden Centre, Klerksdorp 💰 Entry:  R50 per person | R20 pensioners | Kids under 12 – Free 🎟️ Free entrance  between 15:00 and 16:00 Visitors can meet the shelter team, support fundraising efforts, and learn more about adoption opportunities. Honouring a Lifelong Legacy: Celebrating Charmaine 🎉 This week also marks a special celebration for the woman who started it all, Charmaine , founder of the Orkney Animal Shelter. In 2010 , with only R150  and an unshakable determination, Charmaine opened the doors of hope for abandoned and neglected animals. Fifteen years later, her compassion continues to guide the shelter. Even after stepping down as chairperson in 2021, she remains an active committee member, offering wisdom and support to the next generation of rescuers. As she celebrates her 60th birthday , the shelter team and volunteers extend their deepest gratitude. Wrapping Love for the Holidays 🎁 The spirit of giving is already in the air as the shelter prepares for its Christmas Gift-Wrapping Fundraiser  at Matlosana Mall  from 16 to 24 December 2025 . • High-Speed Thrills as Local Teams Shine at the 2025 Potch Plastic 300

The 2025 Potch Plastic 300  brought high-speed excitement and intense competition to Rysmierbult, Potchefstroom , as some of South Africa’s top off-road teams battled it out for championship points in the penultimate round of the national off-road racing season. Organised by Off Road South Africa  in partnership with Potch Plastic Recycling , the event transformed the normally quiet Diggers Inn area into a bustling hub of engines, dust, and adrenaline. Crews worked through the morning to prepare their vehicles before taking on the challenging 300-kilometre route under clear, hot North West skies. 🚘 Tight Finish in the Production Vehicle Category The Production Vehicle Category  produced one of the closest finishes of the season. Jan Rose and Arno Olivier  of Team Topcar Panelbeaters  took the win in their Ford Ranger , narrowly edging out TG Jansen van Rensburg and Vince van Allemann  of LTX Landini Racing  by only six seconds  after more than three hours of racing. Both teams displayed precision driving and endurance, crossing the line with times of 3:09:35  and 3:09:41  respectively. Wessel Mostert  and first-time navigator Koos Bosman  secured third place  in their Mosco Class S Toyota Hilux , finishing in 4:21:58  after serving a minor penalty. Alex van Rooyen  and Adriaan Labuschagne , competing in a Mitsubishi Pajero , were forced to retire due to mechanical issues. 🏎️ Special Vehicle Category Dominated by Local Crews The Special Vehicle Category  saw local racers deliver strong performances despite a day of mechanical challenges and race penalties. Brothers Dewald and Seegers du Plessis  claimed victory in their Zarco 2006 , following a consistent run that kept them clear of trouble. Their father, Gerhard du Plessis , alongside co-driver Ferdie Seegers , initially led the race in their Jimco 2000 , but a penalty for cutting a section of the route dropped them to second place . Third position went to Gideon Jacobs and Junior Vardy  in their Chevrolet Porter , who also impressed spectators with their pace. The local favourites thrilled the crowd with spectacular jumps over a series of humps, embodying the fearless spirit of off-road racing. 🏁 One-Second Victory in the Lightweight Vehicle Category The Lightweight Vehicle Category  produced one of the event’s most dramatic moments, as Dominique and Neil du Preez , a mother-and-son team , clinched victory by a single second. Driving their Can-Am Maverick X3 , the pair finished in 3:04:34 , narrowly ahead of Liezel Sajaam and Jorina van Staden , who crossed the line at 3:05:59  after maintaining strong pace throughout the race. A penalty for a missed stop cost Walter du Plessis and Garth Warncke  a potential podium, moving them down to third  with a time of 3:09:31 . Andre du Plessis and Tim van As  rounded off the finishers after battling mechanical problems during Lap 2. 🌄 Community, Competition, and Commitment to Sustainability The Potch Plastic 300  once again underscored the strong off-road culture in the North West, where motorsport, community, and environmental awareness intersect. With support from Potch Plastic Recycling , Twinstar Precast , Doep Civils , Toyota Matjhabeng , and OdorCure , the event promoted responsible waste management alongside high-octane racing action. Crowds lined the route throughout the day, cheering on drivers and co-drivers who braved rough terrain, dust, and heat to reach the finish. The event also contributed valuable championship points as teams look ahead to the season finale, where titles will be decided. The 2025 edition of the Potch Plastic 300 not only showcased the skill and endurance of South Africa’s off-road competitors but also highlighted the continued growth of motorsport in the Potchefstroom region, a place where passion for speed and community pride go hand in hand. • A Reunion to Remember – The High School for Girls Potchefstroom Celebrates Friendship, Heritage, and Heart

💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙 Reunions are special occasions, moments when the past and present meet, when laughter echoes through familiar hallways, and when memories long tucked away in the corners of the mind come rushing back in vivid colour. This past Saturday, the High School for Girls Potchefstroom hosted its annual Girls High Reunion, and for everyone who attended, it was truly a day to remember. Image: High School for Girls Potchefstroom ✨ A Journey Down Memory Lane As guests began to arrive, there was a distinct buzz of excitement in the air. The courtyard, usually filled with the chatter of current learners, now brimmed with voices of generations past. Old girls from across the country made their way back to their beloved alma mater, some hadn’t set foot on the grounds in decades, yet the moment they stepped through those familiar gates, it felt like coming home. The morning kicked off with smiles, hugs, and even a few happy tears as old classmates recognised one another after years apart. There was an unmistakable energy, that unique blend of nostalgia and pride that only a Girls High gathering could inspire. Many took a slow walk through the school grounds, pausing at the buildings that had once been the backdrop to their teenage adventures. The main hall, still proudly standing as the heart of the school, was filled with stories of assemblies, award ceremonies, and those unforgettable last-day-of-term moments. The walls may have been repainted and classrooms modernised, but the soul of Girls High remained unchanged. 🏫 A Warm Welcome and a Heartfelt Programme The event’s programme was carefully planned to capture the spirit of Girls High, elegant, heartfelt, and full of laughter. Current staff members and learners joined in to welcome the Old Girls back, ensuring that the reunion was not just about looking back, but also about recognising how the school continues to flourish. After the official welcome, guests were treated to a guided tour of the school, led by enthusiastic prefects who proudly shared updates on new facilities, achievements, and traditions that have been carried forward. It was wonderful to see how the school continues to grow while honouring its rich history. One of the guests commented with a smile, “The buildings may have changed a bit, but the feeling, that Girls High spirit, it’s still here. You can feel it the moment you walk in.” The tour was followed by a scrumptious lunch  served in the beautifully decorated dining area. Tables adorned with soft blues and whites, the school colours, created a serene and elegant atmosphere. The spread included everything from savoury treats to decadent desserts, and it was clear that no detail had been overlooked. 💙 Stories That Never Grow Old Over lunch, laughter filled the room as old friends exchanged stories of school days, from mischievous escapades to heartfelt memories of teachers who left a lasting impact. Someone recalled the excitement of Inter-High events; another fondly remembered the sound of the bell echoing across the quad. Every story sparked another, and before long, it felt as if time had never passed at all. Teachers from years gone by also joined the celebration, receiving warm welcomes from their former students. “You taught me discipline, but also kindness,” one alumna said, embracing her old mathematics teacher. “And I still hear your voice reminding me to always be early, not just on time!” It was these kinds of moments, full of affection, laughter, and gratitude, that made the reunion so special. Girls High has always been more than just a school; it’s a community that shapes confident, compassionate women who go out into the world ready to make a difference. 🎶 The School Song That Still Unites Of course, no reunion would be complete without the School Song. As the piano started to play those first familiar notes, everyone instinctively stood, some with tears in their eyes, others grinning from ear to ear. Voices joined together, a little rusty at first, but soon strong and proud. For a few minutes, it was as if time had stopped. The lyrics that had been sung countless times through the years filled the hall once again, carrying the legacy of Girls High through every note. When the last line rang out, the room erupted in applause. “We still remember every word!” someone shouted with a laugh, and the shared joy in that moment perfectly summed up what the day was all about, connection, heritage, and pride. 🌸 A Celebration of Women of Worth The High School for Girls Potchefstroom has long stood as a beacon of excellence, not only in academics and sport but also in developing strong, independent young women, or as they’re proudly called, Women of Worth . This reunion wasn’t just a gathering of old friends; it was a celebration of everything the school stands for. From the confident learners walking its corridors today to the accomplished women who once wore its uniform, each person is part of a story that continues to inspire. ☕ Friendship, Memories, and Gratitude As the afternoon sun began to fade, guests lingered a little longer, reluctant to say goodbye. Coffee cups were refilled, one last photo was taken, and promises were made to stay in touch. The event was a beautiful reminder that while time moves on, the bonds formed at Girls High remain timeless. The laughter shared, the lessons learned, and the friendships built, they are part of something bigger, something enduring. 💐 Until Next Time… As the last guests made their way out, the school grounds fell quiet again, but the spirit of the day lingered. The reunion wasn’t just about remembering the past, it was about celebrating the unbreakable thread that ties every Girls High learner together. With hearts full and memories renewed, everyone left knowing that no matter where life takes them, they’ll always be part of the Potch Girls High family. 💙 💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙 #PotchGirlsHigh #PotchGirlsHighFamily #PotchGirlsReunion2025 #WomenOfWorth
