- AfriForum’s Role in Potchefstroom: A Closer Look at Local Community Projects
As service delivery challenges persist in many parts of South Africa, various civil society organisations have stepped in to support local communities. One such organisation is AfriForum, which has been active in Potchefstroom through a range of civic initiatives. While the organisation’s national profile often draws political and public attention, its local branch in Potchefstroom has largely focused on addressing practical issues related to safety, infrastructure, and community involvement. Image: Afriforum Logo This article offers a factual overview of AfriForum’s presence and community work in Potchefstroom, highlighting the projects undertaken, the nature of local partnerships, community feedback, and the broader context in which these efforts take place. AfriForum: Organisational Overview AfriForum is a South African civil rights organisation established in 2006. It operates under the broader Solidarity Movement and focuses on protecting the rights of minority communities, with a strong emphasis on cultural preservation, community self-management, and civic engagement. It has grown into a national network with hundreds of thousands of members and more than 170 local branches and neighbourhood watch groups. The organisation positions itself as a platform for communities to take initiative where service delivery is lacking. Its activities range from legal action and public awareness campaigns to on-the-ground community service projects such as repairing roads, installing infrastructure, and supporting local safety efforts. Local Branch Activities in Potchefstroom In Potchefstroom, AfriForum has become especially active in recent years through its branch’s volunteer-driven projects. The local team has identified several community needs and launched practical initiatives to address them, particularly in areas where basic service delivery is delayed or inconsistent. Road and Infrastructure Maintenance One of the most visible aspects of AfriForum’s work in Potchefstroom is its ongoing effort to repair potholes in residential and main streets. Since 2017, the local branch has carried out multiple road maintenance projects. Volunteers use cold asphalt and basic road repair tools to fill potholes, especially in areas where residents have reported long-standing damage. In some campaigns, hundreds of potholes have been repaired over several weeks. Local businesses occasionally support these efforts by donating materials or tools. The repairs aim to improve road safety and reduce vehicle damage, particularly in high-traffic areas. In addition to pothole repairs, the branch has also repainted road markings, replaced damaged stop signs, and cleaned up public infrastructure. These projects are usually scheduled in advance and announced on social media or local news platforms, inviting public participation. Community Safety and Neighbourhood Watch AfriForum’s neighbourhood watch initiative in Potchefstroom is another key area of activity. The watch consists of trained volunteers who patrol various suburbs in coordination with law enforcement and private security companies. Their primary role is to observe and report suspicious activity, support emergency response efforts, and provide a visible deterrent to crime. Volunteers receive training in radio communication, safety protocols, and relevant laws. The neighbourhood watch also collaborates with other community groups, including those in areas such as Ikageng and Promosa, to share information and extend patrol coverage. The aim of these efforts is not to replace the police but to act as an auxiliary structure that helps enhance safety through community presence. Patrols are often carried out during evenings and weekends, with volunteers using reflective vests and two-way radios. Imag e: AfriForum Potchefstroom Facebook Case Study: Rapid Response and Crime Prevention In early 2024, AfriForum’s Potchefstroom neighbourhood watch responded to a livestock theft incident involving several horses. A community member reported unusual activity, prompting a coordinated response from AfriForum volunteers and a local security company. Multiple suspects were detained and handed over to the South African Police Service (SAPS). This incident highlighted the group’s role in assisting residents and strengthening communication between different safety stakeholders. Infrastructure Advocacy: Sewage System Challenges AfriForum has also taken an advocacy role in response to municipal service issues. One notable concern in Potchefstroom has been the management of sewage infrastructure. The Botha Street sewage pump station, which serves a large portion of the town, has experienced several breakdowns due to mechanical failures and aging equipment. These breakdowns have, on occasion, led to sewage overflows into residential areas and nearby water systems. In response, AfriForum conducted inspections, documented affected areas, and submitted formal requests for intervention to the JB Marks Local Municipality. The branch also met with municipal officials to discuss infrastructure plans and requested regular updates on repairs and maintenance strategies. AfriForum’s aim in these cases has been to raise awareness and advocate for timely solutions to prevent health and environmental risks. The organisation continues to monitor the situation and encourages residents to report new issues through local channels. Community Engagement and Expansion While AfriForum’s roots are historically linked to Afrikaner civil rights, its Potchefstroom branch reports growing engagement from residents across various communities. Volunteers have worked alongside individuals from Ikageng, Promosa, and Mohadin on clean-up days and neighbourhood safety initiatives. According to statements from the local branch, residents from all areas of Potchefstroom increasingly reach out to report service issues or offer help. AfriForum attributes this to the visibility of its projects and the practical nature of its work. The organisation has stated that it welcomes participation from any community member interested in contributing to local improvement efforts. In this way, the Potchefstroom branch has sought to position itself as an inclusive civil society actor. Project Sustainability and Limitations AfriForum’s community projects rely largely on volunteers and donations. As such, the scope of what can be achieved is often limited by the availability of resources and manpower. Projects like pothole repairs or sewage monitoring require not only time and materials, but also consistent follow-through. There is also the question of long-term sustainability. While volunteer-driven work can address urgent problems, systemic service delivery improvements ultimately depend on functional government structures. AfriForum acknowledges this reality and emphasizes that its role is complementary, not a replacement for municipal responsibility. The organisation continues to advocate for better governance while maintaining its hands-on approach to community needs. Future goals for the Potchefstroom branch include expanding neighbourhood watch coverage, increasing youth participation, and furthering partnerships with local organisations and businesses. AfriForum’s presence in Potchefstroom reflects a broader trend of civil society stepping in where public service delivery is under strain. Through practical projects like pothole repairs, neighbourhood patrols, and infrastructure advocacy, the local branch has become a visible player in the town’s community landscape. The group’s work has received both praise and scrutiny, highlighting the complex dynamics between civic activism and formal governance. While the full long-term impact of these efforts remains to be seen, the current model demonstrates how community members can organise themselves to address immediate needs and support their neighbourhoods. As Potchefstroom continues to navigate service delivery challenges, the role of organisations like AfriForum, and their relationship with residents and local government, will likely remain a topic of interest and discussion in the years ahead. #TheGoToGuy #potchefstroom #potchgazette #stroomstories #potchorganizations
- Floors Through the Ages: A 1000-Year Evolution
For most of history, houses had very simple floors. In medieval and rural homes, floors were often nothing more than compacted earth or beaten clay, sometimes spread with straw or reed mats for comfort and insulation . Image : The Go-To Guy Creations Even castles’ great halls often used rough stone slabs or thick plaster over earth on the ground floor . In China, Japan and other regions, earthen or clay floors were common too. As societies grew wealthier, plank-wood floors began to appear. In early Cape Dutch farmhouses (17th–19th century South Africa), for example, “floors were made of mud or dung inset with peach pits” and polished to a shine ; only later did polished yellowwood planks replace the mud and dung in those homes . Castle walls and monastery halls in medieval Europe typically had hard stone floors (slabs of limestone, sandstone or slate) for durability . Noble homes might add rushes or herbs on top to freshen the air, but most peasant cottages simply swept and reused dirt or dung floors . By the 17th and 18th centuries, hardwood planks (oak, mahogany, pine, etc.) became symbols of affluence in Europe and colonial America, often laid in herringbone or parquet patterns for visual richness . Image : The Go-To Guy Creations 19th–20th Century: Tiles, Woods, Carpets and Linoleum The Industrial Revolution brought new materials and mass production. Victorian and early-Edwardian homes commonly featured encaustic and ceramic tiles in entryways and hallways – elaborately patterned inlays that showed off craftsmanship . (Such floors are being rediscovered today in renovated historic homes.) At the same time, wall-to-wall area rugs and carpets became popular once looms and manufacturing could produce them cheaply. Carpets (often of wool or synthetic fibers) added warmth and color to parlors by the late 19th century. In the 20th century, linoleum and vinyl came into vogue for their affordability and easy cleaning. Mid-century kitchens and diners famously had colorful checkerboard linoleum tiles or vinyl . The 1960s–70s saw plush shag carpets define living rooms. By the late 20th century, engineered hardwood, laminate wood-look planks, ceramic and porcelain tiles, and synthetic carpets were common in homes around the world. Image : The Go-To Guy Creations Today’s trend is toward large-format tiles, wide-plank wood, and biophilic natural materials like cork, stone, and responsibly sourced. Wide vinyl planks that mimic wood grain are also extremely popular, offering wood’s warm look without. In colonial South Africa (and Potchefstroom), many early houses were simple cottages. For example, an 1866 Dutch Reformed church in Potchefstroom ,one of the town’s oldest buildings, was first built with a packed-earth (dirt) floor and thatched roo f. It wasn’t until 1892 that that church’s dirt floor was replaced by polished wooden planks . Likewise, a late-19th-century Berlin Mission building in Potchefstroom originally had a dung-and-mud floor ; by 1956 it was upgraded to a smooth parquet floor . In short, local Boer homes of the 1800s typically had “reed ceilings and cow-dung floors” (the waste easily sealed a packed dirt subfloor). As the town prospered under British rule and later, Victorian-style townhouses sprang up on Potchefstroom’s Market Square . These affluent homes would have used pine or oak floorboards or imported ceramic tiles, a marked change from the original pioneer huts. Potchefstroom’s Heritage and Local Styles Potchefstroom’s architecture reflects its colonial and vernacular roots. The Goetz/Fleischach Museum (an old market-square townhouse) still shows an 1850s Victorian layout and local materials . The Old Presidency (1868 Pretorius House) is a simple Cape-style cottage where the ZAR’s president once lived . Cape Dutch features (thick whitewashed walls, gables, stoops) also influenced local design. Historic school and university buildings of the early 20th century combined Dutch frontons and verandas in neo-Dutch or British Edwardian styles. Image : The Go-To Guy Creations Inside these older structures, original wooden floors or encaustic tiles often survive. In the broader Potchefstroom region, traditional Tswana and Afrikaner farmhouses persisted with thatch and mud until well into the 1900s. Over the 20th century, Potchefstroom’s homes modernized. Cement and concrete floors became common, finished with ceramic tiles or linoleum. From about 1960 onward, mid-century houses often had terrazzo or vinyl floors in kitchens and polished cedar or pine boards in living areas. Contemporary Potchefstroom residences now use the same materials as elsewhere: porcelain tile in bathrooms, laminated wood or vinyl-plank in living rooms, and wall-to-wall carpet in bedrooms. The city’s heritage is preserved in its museums and monuments , for example, the “Totius House” (1906) and the old university Main Building, but flooring in those is more decorative (tiled or polished wood) and less about traditional materials. Future Trends: Smart and Sustainable Floors Looking ahead, flooring is becoming both smarter and more eco-friendly. Smart floors embed sensors and electronics underfoot. For instance, “smart flooring” systems can capture foot traffic patterns and room occupancy data via pressure sensors . In office or hospital settings, such floors might adjust lighting or climate control based on where people walk. Experimental technologies even let floor tiles generate power: companies like Pavegen make tiles that convert the kinetic energy of footsteps into electricity . Image : The Go-To Guy Creations Sustainability is another big trend. Homeowners are opting for natural and recycled materials : cork floors for comfort and insulation, rapidly renewable bamboo planks, recycled composite tiles, and Marmoleum (linoleum made from linseed oil and wood fiber) are all gaining ground. Wood flooring is increasingly certified (FSC) or reclaimed to protect forests. Even for luxury looks, manufacturers use recycled glass terrazzo or porcelain with bio-based resins. According to recent design surveys, “sustainable materials like cork, natural stone, and responsibly sourced hardwoods” are go-to choices for eco-conscious homes . In short, the future floor underfoot will marry old and new, combining time-tested materials (stone, wood, carpet) with innovations in health, interactivity, and green design.

Image: The Go-To Guy Creations From Tots to Seniors: Everyone Can Dance One of the best things about dance classes in Potchefstroom is that they welcome all ages and skill levels. You’ll find classes for tiny toddlers just learning to twirl, energetic teens mastering the latest moves, young adults looking for a new social activity, and even “tannies” and “ooms” proving that age is just a number on the dance floor. It doesn’t matter if you have two left feet or haven’t danced in years, local instructors are friendly and patient, focusing on the joy of dancing. As experts like Dr. Lauren Elson say, if you can move, you can dance . In Potch, that philosophy shines through: classes are designed to be inclusive, so no one feels left out. The aim is to get you moving, laughing, and enjoying each step. So Many Dance Styles to Try You might be surprised by the variety of dance styles you can learn right here in Potchefstroom. Perfect for those who want to groove to the latest beats and get a great workout at the same time 🕺. Ballet & Contemporary: For something more classical, you can join ballet or contemporary dance lessons. These classes build grace, balance, and flexibility. Don’t worry – you don’t need a tutu to start! Just bring enthusiasm and enjoy the process of learning elegant steps. Ballroom & Latin: Looking to add some spice and romance? Potchefstroom has dance teachers who specialise in Latin American and Ballroom dances – think cha-cha, tango, waltz, and more. Couples (or singles!) can learn to glide and spin across the floor. It’s a popular choice for people preparing for weddings or matric dances, or anyone who’s watched Strictly Come Dancing and felt inspired. Sokkie & Line Dancing: Of course, we can’t forget our home-grown social dancing. Sokkie is a firm favourite in Potch – an easy-to-learn partner dance you’ll see at every Afrikaans celebration. Some studios even teach cowboy line dancing and two-step, adding a fun local twist. These are very gesellig (sociable) classes where laughter is guaranteed 😄. More Than Just Moves: The Benefits of Dancing Joining a dance class isn’t only about learning steps, it’s about improving your well-being and having a blast while you’re at it. Dancing is a full-body workout in disguise. Experts note that regular dancing can improve cardiovascular health, lower blood pressure, build muscle tone, and even sharpen your mind . After a few weeks of classes, don’t be surprised if you feel fitter and more energetic. The mental benefits are just as impressive. Ever notice how dancing can turn a bad day into a good one? Moving to music relieves stress and releases those “feel-good” endorphins, helping to chase away anxiety and the blues . Many Potchefstroom locals say that their dance class is the highlight of their week, a chance to forget about work or studies for a while and simply have fun . It’s hard to worry about deadlines when you’re concentrating on a new tango routine or laughing as you miss step and try again. Dancing is also wonderfully social. When you join a class, you’re bound to meet a diverse bunch of people from around town. There’s a special camaraderie that forms when everyone is learning together. You might make a new friend while practicing a waltz, or share a joke over how tricky that hip-hop move is. - NWU Achieves Record-Breaking Results in 2025 SAICA and ICAN Exams, Surpasses National Averages
The North-West University (NWU) has cemented its status as a top-tier institution for accounting education in South Africa, following the release of the 2025 Initial Assessment of Competence (IAC) examination results by the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA) and the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Namibia (ICAN). With a record-breaking pass rate of 95% for SAICA and a perfect 100% for ICAN candidates, NWU continues to stand out in a competitive national landscape where the average pass rate was significantly lower. Image: The Go-To Guy Creations Stellar Results Amid National Challenges The national average pass rate for the SAICA and ICAN exams stood at 70%, an improvement from the previous year’s 67%, according to SAICA. Against this backdrop, NWU’s performance is not only commendable but exceptional. A total of 141 NWU candidates passed the exams in January 2025, the highest number of successful candidates in the university’s history. Professor Heleen Janse van Vuuren, director of the School of Accounting Sciences at NWU, noted that these results mark a historic high for the institution. “This year’s performance reflects years of consistent effort and support across the university’s academic and administrative structures,” she said. Transformation and Inclusion in Focus Beyond overall excellence, NWU’s contribution to the transformation of the accounting profession stands out. Among its African, Coloured, and Indian (ACI) candidates, an impressive 88% passed the SAICA exam, compared to the national average of 64% for these demographic groups. Of the 42 successful ACI candidates, 10 were beneficiaries of the SAICA Thuthuka bursary programme, aimed at nurturing a more diverse pool of chartered accountants. Professor Janse van Vuuren emphasised the significance of these achievements, highlighting NWU’s ongoing role in supporting equity and diversity within the profession. “We celebrate our contribution to the transformation of the accounting profession, this year and over many years,” she added. Adapting to a Future-Focused Framework This year’s IAC exams were the first conducted under SAICA’s new Chartered Accountant of the Future Competency Framework. The updated framework integrates key global developments, including digital transformation and non-financial performance evaluation, equipping aspiring chartered accountants with skills beyond traditional financial reporting. SAICA welcomed the national uptick in pass rates and praised high-performing institutions like NWU, acknowledging their role in preparing candidates for an evolving professional landscape. As the accounting profession adapts to new challenges and competencies, NWU’s 2025 IAC exam performance affirms its readiness to lead and innovate in academic excellence and transformation. The university's record-setting results not only reflect its academic rigor but also its sustained commitment to inclusive, future-forward education in South Africa. #TheGoToGuy #Potchefstroom #potchgazette #stroomstories #newstalk
- Telling Potchefstroom's Stories Through Video
Potchefstroom, a lively South African city buzzing with creativity and culture, is experiencing a boom in visual media engagement . Social networks are increasingly dominated by videos and images, and local businesses have taken note. In Potchefstroom there’s a growing emphasis on using visual content, particularly short videos, to connect with the community . Platforms like Instagram and TikTok have gained significant traction among locals, with many businesses showcasing products or sharing updates through engaging video clips . This trend reflects a simple truth: people today respond to dynamic, storytelling content. Studies even show that viewers retain up to 95% of a message when they watch it in a video, versus only about 10% when reading the same message in text . In a crowded digital landscape, a well-crafted video can thus make a lasting impression where a plain advertisement might fade away. O ur platform help Potchefstroom ride this visual wave, The Go-To Guy, a community-centric digital hub that has made local storytelling its mission. Rather than acting as just another advertising agency, The Go-To Guy has grown into a multifaceted resource for the city, combining an online business directory, news content, and marketing services. The result is a one-stop platform where Potchefstroom’s stories, businesses, and audiences converge. Image: The Go-To Guy Creations Potchefstroom’s Go-To Digital Hub A bustling market in Potchefstroom reflects the city’s vibrant community, an environment where engaging visuals and stories resonate with local audiences. Founded in 2018, The Go-To Guy has quickly established itself as Potchefstroom’s premier “go-to” source for local information . Over the past five-plus years, it has built a substantial audience: the platform’s main Facebook page alone boasts around 70,000 followers, and its website sees roughly 75,000 monthly page views . This reach did not grow by accident. The Go-To Guy serves as a comprehensive community resource, featuring more than 2,700 local businesses in its online directory , alongside a rich array of local content. On its site and mobile app, you’ll find the Potch Gazette (a digital news section) and even a digital studio initiative called StroomStories, which shines a spotlight on remarkable local personalities and organizations . Through StroomStories, The Go-To Guy's live-broadcasts community-focused programs, from sports talks to cultural and educational segments, on Facebook Live, several times a wee . This blend of business listings and original media content has made The Go-To Guy much more than a directory; it’s a trusted local media presence that “breathes with the community,” as the team likes to say . Crucially, all this activity is rooted in a community-centric philosophy. The Go-To Guy’s team understands that Potchefstroom’s residents value authenticity and local connection. By actively supporting local initiatives – from sponsoring a beloved rugby club to promoting charity drives – they’ve woven themselves into the fabric of the town . This community-first approach has earned them the trust of locals and the patronage of hundreds of businesses that rely on their platform . When people in Potchefstroom want to know what’s happening or where to find a service, The Go-To Guy is increasingly the first place they turn. That trusted position gives The Go-To Guy a unique ability to help local businesses get noticed in an organic, engaging way. Video Services That Spotlight Local Brands At the heart of The Go-To Guy’s marketing offerings are our professional video services, designed to help local brands tell a story through high-quality visuals. Video is a powerful tool for engaging audiences, but many small businesses struggle with the cost or complexity of producing clips that look professional. The Go-To Guy bridges that gap by making video content creation accessible and convenient for Potchefstroom entrepreneurs . From short, snappy promotional videos to longer-form interviews, their creative team produces content that highlights what makes each business specia l. Is your café launching a new menu item? The Go-To Guy can film a 30-second social media ad that captures its flavor. Are you a local artisan with a story to tell? We can sit you down for an interview and let you speak to your potential customers directly on camera. The style is flexible, but the focus is always on engaging storytelling rather than hard sales pitches. What sets these video services apart is the ecosystem into which they’re integrated. When The Go-To Guy creates a video for a client, it doesn’t just get posted once and vanish, it gets amplified across the platform’s multiple channels for maximum visibility. A new video might be embedded in a feature article on the Potch Gazette, cross-posted to Facebook where tens of thousands of locals will see it, and shared via TikTok and Instagram to tap into younger audiences . In other words, the video immediately plugs into a ready-made local audience. Collectively, videos produced or shared by The Go-To Guy have already been viewed over a million times online , a testament to the reach they’ve cultivated. This multi-channel distribution is a huge benefit for businesses: a professionally crafted video paired with The Go-To Guy’s network can achieve in days the kind of local exposure that might otherwise take months of effort to build. Importantly, The Go-To Guy tailors its video offerings to each business’s needs through a tiered service approach. As part of its monthly marketing packages, even entry-level clients get some video promotion, while those on higher-tier plans receive extra perks . For example, premium plan subscribers enjoy dedicated on-site filming or studio interview sessions every month, ensuring a steady stream of fresh video content to keep their audience engaged . This means a local boutique or restaurant can have a new mini-feature or update video every few weeks, showing off the latest arrivals, seasonal specials, or behind-the-scenes moments, without having to orchestrate it all themselves. The Go-To Guy provides the crew and creative direction, so the business owner can simply share their story. And because these videos come with exclusive discounts for monthly clients , it becomes feasible for even smaller businesses to maintain a regular video presence. It’s a service designed to put authentic storytelling above flashy advertising, giving viewers content that feels like local news or entertainment rather than a commercial interruption. One-Stop Marketing with Community Reach Another key advantage of The Go-To Guy’s video service is how seamlessly it integrates with their broader marketing support. Traditional marketing often forces businesses to juggle multiple vendors, one for web design, another for social media, yet another for video production, which can lead to a fragmented message. The Go-To Guy solves this by acting as an all-in-one marketing partner, unifying web, social, and video under one roof . The same team that builds your mini-website on The Go-To Guy’s platform can also script and shoot your video and then run a targeted Facebook ad campaign to boost it. This cohesive approach saves time and ensures that all pieces of your marketing strategy speak with one consistent voice . As the company puts it, there’s “no need to juggle multiple providers” everything is coordinated for you . Moreover, The Go-To Guy leverages its established reach in the community to amplify each business’s message. When your video and story are featured through this platform, you’re effectively plugging into a large, engaged local audience that The Go-To Guy has spent years building up. With over 70,000 followers on Facebook and a new mobile app rolling out in 2025 to broaden its digital footprint , The Go-To Guy ensures that content doesn’t just sit and idle, it gets seen. Their team actively promotes the platform itself as the place to find anything in Potchefstroom, so when your business is part of that ecosystem, you benefit from that ongoing promotion . It’s a hyperlocal focus: we concentrate on Potchefstroom and its immediate surrounds, so the viewers you gain are the people most likely to become real customers nearby. By combining content creation, community news, and business marketing into one service, The Go-To Guy occupies a unique niche in the local landscape . There really isn’t another platform quite like it in Potchefstroom that can produce a video about your business one day and then feature it in a local news roundup the next. This integrated model turns marketing into a form of community engagement rather than a standalone advertisement. Authentic Storytelling Builds Trust Perhaps the most defining trait of The Go-To Guy’s video services is our emphasis on storytelling and authenticity. Instead of pushing aggressive sales pitches, their content approach is to “go beyond generic ads” and tell the business’s story in a relatable way . The team’s background as community storytellers (with thousands of local articles and live broadcasts under their belt) shines through in how they craft each video. They often frame businesses in the context of the community: the family-run restaurant that’s been a neighborhood staple, or the young entrepreneur bringing an innovative service to town. This narrative style helps potential customers feel a personal connection, as if they’ve met the owners or visited the store, even if they’ve only seen them on video. The Go-To Guy’s goal is for viewers to feel “like they know you before they ever step foot in your store or pick up the phone to call” . By the time someone finishes watching a featured video segment or reading a profile in the Potch Gazette, we have gained insight into the people and passion behind the business, not just its products. That familiarity breeds trust. It’s a subtle but powerful form of marketing: when locals see your business through the lens of a human-interest story, they’re more likely to remember you and think of you when a need arises. This storytelling ethos dovetails with The Go-To Guy’s broader community-driven strategy. Because the platform has become a hometown media presence, content created by The Go-To Guy carries a sense of credibility. It’s newsy and authentic, not a blatant ad, so viewers pay attention. Local consumers tend to trust recommendations and stories coming from a source that consistently highlights community life. By featuring businesses alongside everyday Potchefstroom news and stories, The Go-To Guy indirectly vouches for them as part of the community conversation. Over time, this builds a reservoir of goodwill. Businesses that engage via The Go-To Guy’s videos and posts often find that people recognize them from those stories, leading to warmer customer interactions. It’s marketing, yes, but marketing that feels like community dialogue, and that makes a difference in an era where trust is the ultimate currency. In essence, The Go-To Guy’s video services have introduced a new paradigm of local engagement in Potchefstroom: one where advertising is not about selling hard, but about sharing stories and nurturing trust. By blending professional video production with a grassroots understanding of the local audience, The Go-To Guy offers Potchefstroom businesses a chance to be seen and heard in a way that resonates. For the city’s residents, it means more compelling local content to enjoy, discovering the faces and tales behind the storefronts we pass every day. And for business owners, it means having a creative partner that is invested in their long-term growth, reputation, and connection with the community. In a world increasingly dominated by visuals, The Go-To Guy is helping Potchefstroom put its best face forward, one engaging video story at a time. #Potchefstroom #PotchBusiness #SupportLocal #PotchCommunity #LocalLegends #Thegotoguy

- Man’s Best Friend
For thousands of years, humans and dogs have shared a special bond. The dog ( Canis lupus familiaris ) was likely the first animal humans domesticated . Early people quickly realized that wolf-like companions could help with hunting and guarding. Image : The Go-To Guy Creations For example, the Bonn-Oberkassel dog, an ancient canine buried with humans around 14,220 years ago, highlights that people treasured dogs even in prehistoric times . Genetic studies suggest wolves diverged into our modern dogs about 10,000–15,000 years ago . Over millennia, dogs helped humans hunt, herd livestock, and guard homes, forging a partnership that endures even today . It’s no wonder we affectionately call dogs “man’s best friend.” Why We Adore Dogs Science offers insight into why dogs hold such a special place in our lives. For instance, brain scans show a dog’s reward centers light up at the scent of its owner, and many dogs will even choose their owner’s praise over a food treat . In turn, owning a dog brings real benefits for people. Dogs provide constant, non-judgmental companionship that can ease stress and loneliness. In one survey, about 87% of dog owners said their pet has a positive impact on their mental health, and roughly 69% reported that their dog helps reduce stress and provide unconditional love and support . These loyal companions often feel like members of the family, boosting our mood and encouraging us to stay active with regular walks and play. Image : The Go-To Guy Creations Dogs in Potchefstroom Potchefstroom residents also enjoy plenty of dog-friendly options. For grooming and pampering, locals recommend Esmi’s Pet Grooming , a boutique salon praised for its top-notch, gentle care . For outdoor fun, the city’s parks and trails are popular with dog owners. Notable dog-friendly spots include: Fetch Bark Park (coming soon) , an off-leash play area being developed at Peterson Park (across from the hospital) for pups to run and play safely . Cachet Park , an 11.3-acre central park with shaded trails and open lawns, ideal for leisurely dog walks . Trim Park , a spacious 26.6-acre park with long paths and grassy fields, popular for active pups and their owners . From early history to everyday strolls in our neighborhoods, dogs enrich our lives at every turn. In Potchefstroom and beyond, the special bond with our canine companions proves again why dogs truly are man’s best friend.
- Uniform Power - Why Clothes Make People Seem Professional in Potchefstroom
In Potchefstroom (and everywhere else), spotting someone in uniform ,a police officer, a nurse, a hotel concierge, immediately sends a message. We tend to see them as more professional, trustworthy, and capable. Image : The Go-To Guy Creations This isn’t magic; psychologists actually call clothing an “identity kit”. In other words, uniforms are visual signals that carry meaning. As one expert notes, “the attire we choose significantly affects how others perceive our personality and capabilities”. In short, a uniform immediately tells our brains “this person has a role and the skills for it.” The Psychology of Uniforms The effect works on two levels – the wearer and the observer. On one hand, wearing a uniform can boost confidence and focus . Researchers have found that specific attire (like a doctor’s white coat or a service uniform) can prime the brain to act “in character.” For example, studies show doctors in lab coats become more attentive and patients find them more professional . On the other hand, the public’s reaction changes too: seeing a well-dressed nurse or security guard puts us at ease and makes us trust their competence. Identity and belonging. A uniform signals “I’m part of a team.” People feel pride and unity when they wear the same outfit. In fact, uniforms “foster a sense of pride and belonging” and give wearers a feeling of legitimacy and authority . One study found a crisp uniform made employees feel proud of their role and boosted their self-esteem. Confidence and focus. Putting on a uniform can psychologically put someone in “work mode.” The concept of enclothed cognition explains this: the symbolic meaning of the clothes actually alters the wearer’s mindset. Chefs report feeling more capable in proper chef whites, and even wearing a company-branded polo can boost an employee’s professionalism. Authority and trust. A uniform says “I’m official.” Studies show that customers automatically trust uniformed staff more. For instance, survey data reveals customers rate service technicians in uniform as more professional, reliable and competent than the same workers in street clothes . Similarly, employees in uniforms are seen as more knowledgeable and capable . This aligns with the idea that a sharp uniform projects an organized, reliable image to everyone . Image : The Go-To Guy Creations Social Signals and Trust In everyday life, a uniform also conveys authority , which makes people behave differently. Classic psychology experiments confirm this: a man asking strangers for favors on the street got obeyed 80% of the time when wearing a security guard’s uniform, but far less when dressed casually. We subconsciously assume the person in uniform has a “vested authority” and the right to give orders . This is why police, military, or even school staff in uniform can command respect (or compliance) more easily. Moreover, there’s a kind of halo effect . We not only trust uniformed professionals on duty, we often treat them as more competent. For example, patients seeing doctors in white lab coats report higher satisfaction and assume the doctors are more knowledgeable and professional . Shoppers assume that store clerks in neat uniforms are better at their jobs. In short, research consistently finds people endorse and recommend businesses whose employees wear clean, branded uniforms . Uniforms in Our Community In Potchefstroom we see this everywhere. A friendly security guard patrolling our shopping mall, or a town counselor in a crisp polo at the farmers’ market , they instantly feel more approachable and competent. Take a local hotel’s concierge, for example: the very sight of a neatly dressed bellhop or receptionist signals professionalism. Studies back this up: customers tend to trust uniformed staff more, believing they’ll provide reliable service . Likewise, nurses in scrubs or chefs in jackets make patients and diners feel more at ease, simply because the uniform sets expectations of skill and care. Image : The Go-To Guy Creations For local businesses in hospitality and service, choosing the right uniform matters. Uniforms aren’t just about looks, they shape how customers feel. That’s why Potchefstroom entrepreneurs turn to neighborhood suppliers who understand this community. Haya Collections , right here in Potch, specializes in professional hospitality wear. They carry everything from sleek waiter uniforms to durable chef coats , all designed to make staff look sharp. In our town, Haya Collections has become the go-to place for teams wanting that clean, confident look. After all, if a uniform helps earn trust and pride, it pays to source the best locally. Whether on campus, in the office, or behind the counter, uniforms help Potchefstroom’s people put their best foot forward. And when it comes to dressing for success in hospitality, Haya Collections is keeping our community looking professional.

Part 1: Foundations First 📍 Date: 5 June 2025 ⏰ Time: 09:00 – 16:00 💰 Cost: R1410 per person Part 1 covers the basics, and then some. It’s aimed at building solid groundwork for those entrusted with children's care. Sessions include: Setting boundaries and understanding professional conduct Hygiene and feeding guidelines (because yoghurt-on-the-ceiling isn’t a milestone) Emergency contacts, safety responses, and what to do when things go pear-shaped Safety in the bath, around water, and during daily routines How to fill out a daily report card, yes, it's a thing Baby stimulation, motor skills development, and speech support Planning activities and assembling that all-important activity box It’s structured but practical, so attendees don’t just sit through lectures, they walk away with tools to use right away. Part 2: The Follow-Up (With CPR) 📍 Date: 10 June 2025 ⏰ Time: 09:00 – 15:00 💰 Cost: R1410 per person 🫀 Optional CPR add-on: R400 Things get a bit more advanced in Part 2. This time, there’s a focus on day-to-day challenges and child development, plus a CPR demonstration for those who opt in. Topics include: Solids introduction and the joys of toilet training Routine building and managing the daily juggle Emotional development, self-regulation and how to help little ones name those Big Feelings Activity planning for both structured and unstructured play Setting up the playroom, using household items for toys (yes, the cardboard box really is the winner) And wrapping up with guidance on planning a balanced day This part really drills down into the “how” of childcare, with a bonus CPR component, because knowing how to respond in a crisis is just as vital as knowing how to organise a crayon box.
Maar dis basaar, so waarskynlik tog. Kom loer in – 31 Mei 2025. Jy weet jy wil.
