  • Two Die in Orkney Sewer Tragedy Amid Service Delivery Outcry

Orkney, 15 October 2025: A tragic incident has rocked the Orkney community after two residents lost their lives and another was hospitalised while attempting to unblock a sewer that had been overflowing in their street for several months. Image: The Go-To Guy Creations The incident occurred on Tuesday morning on the corner of Shakespeare and Wordsworth Streets, where residents, frustrated by what they described as months of municipal inaction, tried to clear the blocked manhole themselves. According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), the men were overpowered by methane gas while working in the manhole. The deceased have not yet been publicly identified. Police confirmed that the men were employed by a local businessman and were not contracted by the City of Matlosana Municipality to perform any municipal maintenance work. An inquest docket has been opened and investigations into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy are underway. Municipality Expresses Condolences In an official statement issued on Tuesday afternoon, the City of Matlosana Local Municipality expressed its “deepest sympathy and heartfelt condolences”  to the families and loved ones of the two men. Executive Mayor Councillor Fikile Mahlophe said the municipality was “deeply saddened by this tragic event”  and extended sympathies to the affected families, adding: “Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult time.” Image: Songloed Buurtwag Municipal spokesperson Ms. Ntswaki Makgetha confirmed that the deceased were not municipal employees and urged members of the public and the media to “exercise sensitivity and refrain from speculation, allowing due process to unfold and respecting the privacy of the grieving families.” Residents Point to Longstanding Neglect Local residents say the tragedy could have been prevented had the municipality responded to repeated reports of the overflowing sewer, which had been causing health hazards and unbearable living conditions in the area for months. One resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “We called, emailed, and even went to the municipal offices to complain. The smell was terrible, and sewage was running down the street. Nothing was ever done. They left us to live like this.” Political Outrage Over ‘Preventable Tragedy’ The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Matlosana has blamed the incident on what it calls “chronic municipal neglect and the collapse of basic service delivery under the current ANC administration.” In a statement, the DA said: “This devastating incident occurred when residents, out of sheer desperation, attempted to unblock a sewer that had been overflowing for months. Despite numerous complaints and pleas for intervention, the municipality failed to act. As a result, two residents tragically lost their lives, and another remains in hospital.” Image: Democratic Alliance North West The party added that no resident should ever have to risk their life to restore a service that the municipality is both legally and morally obligated to provide. It has since called for a full and transparent investigation into the incident to ensure accountability for those whose inaction contributed to the loss of life. The DA further stated that the tragedy highlights the urgent need for “competent leadership, proper maintenance of infrastructure, and governance that protects residents’ lives and dignity.” Investigation Continues Authorities remained on scene for much of the day as forensic teams conducted assessments. The area around the manhole was cordoned off, and several community members gathered nearby, visibly shaken by the loss. Police have not yet released the names of the deceased, pending notification of their families. The third man remains in hospital under observation. The municipality has urged the public to allow investigations to proceed and said it would cooperate fully with authorities to determine the exact cause and contributing factors behind the incident. A Community in Mourning As Orkney mourns the lives lost, questions continue to mount over whether this tragedy could (and should) have been prevented. For many residents, the incident is not just a story of personal loss, but a painful symbol of the systemic failure of local service delivery. “They died trying to fix what the municipality should have fixed,” one resident said quietly, standing near the cordoned-off site. “That’s the saddest part.”

  • Standing Together Against Cancer

🎀🎀🎀🎀🎀🎀🎀🎀🎀🎀 The pink ribbon is the international symbol of breast cancer awareness. It plays a central role during October’s “Cancer Awareness Month,” a global initiative aimed at promoting support for cancer patients and encouraging early detection. Image; The Go-to Guy Creations The Reality of Cancer in South Africa Cancer is one of the world’s leading health challenges, causing approximately 10 million deaths globally each year. In South Africa, about 44 000 deaths were attributed to cancer in 2018, representing roughly 10% of all deaths nationally. Approximately 85 000 new cases are diagnosed annually. Among South African women, breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed type, followed by cervical cancer. Among men, prostate cancer is the most prevalent. Awareness campaigns are viewed as a crucial part of reducing cancer mortality by encouraging prevention, early diagnosis, and improved access to treatment. Prevention and Early Detection Medical experts estimate that 30–50% of cancer cases can be prevented through healthy lifestyle choices and avoiding known risk factors. Tobacco use remains the leading preventable cause of cancer deaths worldwide. Other contributing factors include alcohol consumption, obesity, poor diet, and physical inactivity. Certain infections also increase cancer risk. In low- and middle-income countries, about one-quarter of cancer cases are linked to viruses such as human papillomavirus (HPV), associated with cervical cancer, and hepatitis B, associated with liver cancer. Vaccination against these viruses is a proven preventive measure. Early detection remains essential. When diagnosed in the early stages, cancers are more treatable and, in many cases, curable. The five-year survival rate for early-stage breast cancer is approximately 99%, and 91% for cervical cancer. Screening tests, including mammograms, Pap smears, colonoscopies, and PSA blood tests, are effective in identifying cancers before symptoms develop. In South Africa, however, screening rates remain below global standards. Only about one in five women undergo regular cervical cancer screening every three years. Expanding awareness initiatives and improving access to screening services remain ongoing public health priorities. Advances in Cancer Research and Treatment Recent medical developments have introduced new approaches to both diagnosing and treating cancer. Immunotherapy , which enhances the body’s immune response against cancer cells, has significantly improved outcomes in several aggressive cancer types, including melanoma and lung cancer. Certain new delivery methods have reduced treatment times, improving patient comfort and clinical efficiency. Researchers are also studying personalised cancer vaccines , which use mRNA technology to train the immune system to target tumour-specific cells. Clinical trials are ongoing in several countries. Precision oncology  represents another key advancement. This approach involves analysing the genetic and molecular characteristics of a tumour to identify the most effective treatment for each individual case. Such targeted therapies focus specifically on cancer-driving mutations, often resulting in fewer side effects than traditional chemotherapy. In diagnostic innovation, scientists are developing blood tests capable of identifying multiple cancer types at early stages, as well as artificial intelligence (AI) tools that can predict an individual’s cancer risk based on imaging data. These technologies aim to support earlier detection and more accurate treatment planning. Understanding the Body and Supporting Recovery Cancer awareness also involves understanding personal health and recognising changes in the body that could indicate illness. Family medical history and awareness of early warning signs, such as unexplained weight loss, persistent fatigue, or unusual lumps, can be vital for early intervention. Regular self-examinations are recommended for both men and women. Early medical consultation following noticeable changes is essential for timely diagnosis and treatment. For individuals undergoing treatment, lifestyle management remains an important aspect of recovery. Evidence indicates that regular physical activity can help reduce the likelihood of recurrence and improve long-term survival. Balanced nutrition, adequate rest, psychological support, and participation in support groups contribute to improved overall well-being during and after treatment. The Role of Organisations and Community Efforts Numerous organisations across South Africa are active in cancer awareness, prevention, and patient support. The Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA)  conducts public awareness campaigns, offers screening services, and provides counselling and education. The annual CANSA Shavathon  encourages public participation to raise funds for research and support programmes. Pink Drive , a mobile health service, delivers free breast and cervical cancer screening to communities across the country, particularly in areas with limited healthcare access. In Potchefstroom, Green Health  collaborates with medical professionals, including Professor Lardus Erasmus, to host educational sessions focused on cancer research, prevention, and public awareness. These initiatives aim to improve community understanding of early detection and promote informed health decisions. North-West University has also held campus awareness events that provide educational resources and free screening opportunities, reinforcing community engagement in preventive healthcare. Cancer Awareness Month highlights the importance of education, early detection, and equitable access to healthcare. By improving awareness of risk factors, encouraging regular screenings, and supporting ongoing medical research, South Africa continues to strengthen its response to the national cancer burden. Collaborative efforts by health organisations, educational institutions, and community partners contribute to a better-informed public and an improved national capacity for prevention and treatment. Cancer awareness remains a collective responsibility aimed at reducing disease impact and improving survival outcomes across the country. 🎀🎀🎀🎀🎀🎀🎀🎀🎀🎀 #GreenHealth   #TheGoToGuy   #Potchefstroom   #CancerAwarenessMonth

  • Power Tools and Safe Hands: How to Handle Equipment the Right Way

Power Meets Responsibility Power tools have revolutionised how we build, repair, and renovate. Whether you’re cutting timber for a new deck, drilling into concrete for a security gate, or breaking up a driveway with a jackhammer, these tools save enormous time and effort. But with that convenience comes risk. Misuse, poor maintenance, or simple inattention can turn even a reliable tool into a serious hazard. Image: The Go-To Guy Creations Pandmekka Plant & Tool Hire in Potchefstroom has long emphasised that knowing how to handle tools safely is just as important as owning or hiring them . Every drill, saw, or jackhammer carries its own potential dangers, ones that can be avoided with the right precautions, preparation, and a respect for the power behind the machine. The Basics of Power Tool Safety Before switching anything on, a few universal rules apply to all power tools: Inspect before use.  Check cords, plugs, guards, and moving parts for wear or damage. Never operate a tool with exposed wiring or missing safety components. Dress the part.  Always wear protective gear, goggles, gloves, sturdy footwear, and ear protection when working with loud machinery. Avoid loose clothing or jewellery that can get caught in moving parts. Work in a safe space.  Keep your area clean, dry, and well-lit. Cords should be positioned away from foot traffic to prevent tripping or accidental unplugging. Know the tool.  Read or ask about proper handling before use. A few minutes of instruction from an experienced person, like Pandmekka’s staff, can prevent a costly mistake later. Simple steps like these reduce accidents dramatically. Most injuries come not from faulty machines, but from hurrying, improvising, or skipping safety checks. Image: The Go-To Guy Creations Drill Smart, Don’t Force It Electric drills are among the most common tools in any workshop or home. Their simplicity hides real risks. Using the wrong drill bit or applying too much pressure can cause the bit to snap or the tool to jerk unexpectedly. Always match the drill bit to the material, wood, masonry, or metal, and secure the workpiece before drilling. Keep a firm, balanced grip with both hands, and let the drill’s motor do the work instead of forcing it. When drilling overhead or on a ladder, plan your stance and avoid awkward angles that could cause you to lose control. At Pandmekka, every drill rented out is inspected for chuck tightness, trigger response, and cord integrity, giving users a safer start to their projects. Respect the Saw Few tools command as much attention as a saw, and for good reason. Circular saws, jigsaws, and angle grinders can all cause severe injury when used carelessly. The golden rule: never remove or disable the guard . It’s there to protect your hands from the moving blade and to contain debris. Use sharp, undamaged blades, dull ones make the tool work harder, generating more heat and increasing the chance of kickback. Hold materials firmly in place and never overreach while cutting. Saws are designed to do the work for you; pushing too hard or cutting too fast increases danger without saving time. Dust masks and goggles are also non-negotiable. Fine sawdust and sparks can cause eye and lung irritation even after short exposure. Image: The Go-To Guy Creations Jackhammers and Heavy Tools Jackhammers, compactors, and demolition hammers are in a different league. Their power can break through concrete, but also strain muscles, cause vibration injuries, and fatigue users quickly. When using these tools: Always wear vibration-reducing gloves. Maintain a stable stance with feet shoulder-width apart. Take regular breaks to prevent fatigue and loss of grip. Allow the machine to do the work: pressing down too hard reduces efficiency and increases the risk of recoil. Workers who rent heavy-duty equipment from Pandmekka often receive a short safety briefing covering handling techniques, protective gear, and how to rest equipment between uses. This practical guidance ensures both efficiency and safety on-site. Image: The Go-To Guy Creations The Importance of Maintenance Even the most skilled user can be let down by poorly maintained tools. Dirt, dull blades, or worn bearings can cause erratic performance or sudden failure. That’s why maintenance is key to safety. At Pandmekka, all power tools undergo routine inspection and servicing between hires. Electrical insulation is checked, blades are replaced when worn, and moving parts are lubricated. This prevents issues before they arise and ensures that customers receive equipment that performs consistently and safely. For personal tool owners, regular cleaning after each use and storage in a dry place will dramatically extend tool lifespan and reliability. A small amount of care keeps both the operator and the equipment in better shape. Asking for Help Isn’t a Weakness One of the smartest safety habits is asking questions. If you’re unsure how a tool operates, there’s no shame in asking for a demonstration or quick walkthrough. Pandmekka’s staff routinely assist first-time users, explaining correct posture, speed control, and the specific attachments each job requires. This hands-on guidance turns hesitation into confidence, and confidence is what prevents errors. Whether you’re drilling through tile, cutting metal pipe, or compacting soil, understanding how to control the tool is what turns raw power into precise, safe performance. Pandmekka 018-293-2180 289 Walter Sisulu Ln, Potchefstroom Webbie link: https://www.thegotoguy.co.za/potchefstroom/pandmekka Final Thoughts Power tools are not inherently dangerous; they become risky only when used without care or preparation. By taking a few minutes to inspect, equip, and plan before starting, you dramatically reduce accidents and improve results. For professionals and weekend renovators alike, Pandmekka’s message remains clear: handle every tool with respect, keep safety at the forefront, and rely on expert advice when in doubt. The right tool, used the right way, doesn’t just get the job done, it keeps every project, and every pair of hands, safe. #TheGoToGuy #PandmekkaSafety #ToolTips #PowerToolBasics #WorkSmartStaySafe #FixItRight 🔧⚡🪚🔨🧰

  • SA Motorists Warned: Fake Traffic Fines Surge Ahead of AARTO Rollout

South African motorists are being warned about a surge in fake “ghost” traffic fine scams as the country prepares for the rollout of the new Administrative Adjudication of Road Traffic Offences (AARTO) demerit system on 1 December 2025. Traffic fine management platform Fines SA reports a sharp increase in complaints from drivers who were tricked into paying non-existent fines. Scammers are exploiting confusion surrounding the upcoming AARTO law by sending fraudulent SMS, WhatsApp, and email notices that closely mimic official traffic fine communications. Motorists who fall victim end up paying money into fraudulent accounts, thinking they are settling legitimate fines, only to discover the fines never existed and no payment was officially recorded. Image: The Go-To Guy Creations AARTO Demerit System Background AARTO is South Africa’s new framework for handling traffic violations, introducing a driver demerit points system. Under AARTO, traffic fines will be tied directly to licence points: each infringement carries a set number of demerit points, and accumulating too many points can lead to a suspended or even cancelled driver’s licence. In fact, 15 demerit points is the threshold at which a licence may be suspended for three months (multiple suspensions could result in cancellation of the licence). The law’s implementation will be phased in: the first stage of AARTO will launch on 1 December 2025, expanding the system to 69 major municipalities. This will be followed by a second phase covering 144 additional municipalities from 1 April 2026, with the nationwide demerit-point system slated to fully take effect by September 2026. The goal of AARTO is to remove habitual traffic offenders from the roads and improve road safety by penalizing repeat violations under a unified system. However, the rollout timeline of AARTO has been a source of public confusion. Earlier in 2025, several news outlets misreported the start date, initially claiming AARTO would begin in June 2025, then “correcting” it to October 2025, before authorities clarified and officially gazetted the December 2025 launch date. The Department of Transport even briefly cited the wrong October start date in its communications before fixing the error. This swirl of contradictory information created uncertainty among motorists about when and how the new system would kick in. Unfortunately, scammers have seized on this confusion: amid the mixed messages, fraudsters began circulating fake fine notices, taking advantage of drivers’ mistaken beliefs and urgency regarding AARTO’s requirements. ‘Ghost Fine’ Scams Exploit Confusion In a typical “ghost fine” scam, a driver receives a text message, email, or WhatsApp claiming they have an outstanding traffic fine, often with urgent wording to “pay immediately to avoid penalties.” The message includes a payment link that leads to a website virtually indistinguishable from an official municipal traffic fine portal or aggregator site. Barry Berman, CEO of Fines SA, notes that these scam communications appear very convincing: “The messages look legitimate, same logos, same wording, but they direct motorists to unsafe websites.” If the victim proceeds to enter their payment details on this cloned site, the funds are siphoned off into fraudulent accounts, and because the fine was never real, there is no record of payment in any official system. As Berman warns, “Once you’ve paid, your money’s gone and the fine still stands” - the motorist loses their money and remains liable for the (nonexistent or still-unpaid) fine. Criminals are leveraging motorists’ anxiety to comply with the new law. Many drivers are unclear on how AARTO’s demerit system will affect them and are rushing to settle any fines before the system kicks in. Fraudsters exploit this urgency and uncertainty: victims, fearing extra penalties or points on their licence, may act hastily on a bogus fine notification without double-checking its authenticity. This scam surge is especially concerning as AARTO’s full implementation draws nearer. Once the demerit system is active, falling for a ghost-fine scam could mean not only losing money, but also still incurring demerit points and penalties because the fine remains officially unpaid. In other words, a driver could pay a fraudster and think their fine is resolved, only to later face a licence suspension for an “unpaid” infringement that was never actually settled in the eyes of authorities. Fines SA cautions that the potential for harm will only intensify in 2026 when demerit points start counting against drivers’ records. Image: The Go-To Guy Creations Part of a Bigger Wave of Digital Fraud The spike in traffic fine scams comes amid a broader surge in digital fraud across South Africa. The South African Banking Risk Information Centre (SABRIC) reports that digital banking fraud accounted for 65.3% of all reported banking incidents in 2024, with cases jumping from 31,612 in 2023 to roughly 64,000 in 2024. Financial losses from online scams now exceed R1.4 billion per year in South Africa. Importantly, most of these fraud cases are not due to high-tech hacking of bank systems, but rather social engineering, tricking people via fraudulent messages and websites, much like the ghost fine scam does. Phishing and scam tactics are on the rise globally as well. Cybersecurity analysts noted a 26% increase in phishing attempts worldwide in 2024, and South Africa saw a 134% spike in phishing attacks targeting corporate users in just one quarter of 2023. This environment means the public is being bombarded with ever-more convincing scam attempts. The ghost fine scam is yet another flavor of phishing, exploiting a government program (AARTO) as the lure. Given the prevalence of such fraud, motorists need to be extra vigilant with any communications about fines or payments. How to Spot and Avoid Fake Traffic Fines Authorities and consumer experts advise motorists to take a cautious approach toward any traffic fine notifications, especially unsolicited electronic messages. To avoid falling victim to “ghost fine” scams, consider the following tips and precautions: Do NOT click on payment links sent in unsolicited messages:  If you receive an unexpected SMS, WhatsApp, or email about a traffic fine, particularly one you were unaware of, do not use any link provided. These links may lead to cloned websites that look official but are controlled by scammers. Verify fines through official channels:  Instead of trusting a random message, check your traffic fines via official sources. This could mean logging into the relevant municipality’s traffic fines portal or using a trusted, verified platform that aggregates fines (such as the government’s AARTO services or reputable third-party apps). By entering your ID number or vehicle details on an official site, you can confirm if a fine is legitimate and outstanding. Look for secure website signs:  If you do proceed to an online payment, examine the website’s URL and security. Legitimate payment sites will use HTTPS (look for the padlock icon in the address bar) and have a web address that matches the official municipal or service domain. Be wary of any site whose URL is unfamiliar, oddly spelled, or lacks security certificates, that’s a red flag of a fake. Contact authorities when in doubt:  When in doubt about a fine’s authenticity, contact the issuing authority directly. You can reach out to your local traffic department or police station with the notice details and ask if the fine is on their system. Taking a little extra time to verify with an official source can save you from paying scammers. If the message claimed urgency, remember that genuine fines typically follow due process and fixed timelines, you won’t get a sudden last-minute demand to pay via SMS without prior official notices. Barry Berman emphasizes that motorists should not panic or rush when they receive a fine notification. “The best way to prevent falling victim to a scam is by deleting any suspicious notifications,” he advises. In practice, this means if you get a message about a fine that doesn’t seem right, ignore or delete it, and then proactively check your fines through a trusted source. Image: The Go-To Guy Creations Staying Safe and Proactive As the AARTO era begins, staying vigilant and informed is key for South African drivers. Rather than reacting impulsively to every message about fines, motorists are encouraged to take charge of their fine management through secure, verified platforms. Berman recommends signing up with a reputable traffic fines service or using official government portals that provide a trusted overview of any fines, send real-time notifications for new infringements, and offer secure payment methods. For example, Fines SA, the platform sounding the alarm on these scams, says it consolidates fine data from over 250 municipalities and routes payments directly to the official municipal accounts, ensuring that any payment you make actually goes toward settling a legitimate fine. Utilizing such services or the official AARTO system can help motorists confidently distinguish real fines from fake ones. Finally, experts underscore that a healthy dose of skepticism can go a long way. Think twice before clicking on any link or paying money based on a message you weren’t expecting. If something feels off, take a step back and verify. “If in doubt, stop and check, a few minutes of verification could save you thousands,” Berman says. By staying alert and double-checking fine notices during this transition to AARTO, motorists can protect both their wallets and their driving licences from fraudsters. The looming AARTO rollout may be new ground for everyone, but with caution and the use of official channels, drivers can avoid being caught by these “ghost fine” traps. #TheGoToGuy #Cartalk #AARTO #TrafficFines #ScamAlert #SouthAfrica #DriverSafety 🚨📩🚗💳🔒

  • Crime Wave Hits Carletonville: A Week Marked by Hijackings and Armed Robberies

The Carletonville community has endured a tense and troubling week as a series of violent crimes, including hijackings, kidnappings, and armed robberies, struck various parts of the area. From the R501 highway to Khutsong and Blyvoor, residents were left shaken as criminals carried out brazen attacks, leaving authorities intensifying investigations and patrols. Image: The Go-To Guy Creations Blue-Light Kidnappers Strike on R501 A shocking case of impersonation and kidnapping unfolded when a 50-year-old man was abducted by a group posing as traffic officers along the R501 toward Randfontein. The victim, driving a white Nissan NP300 company bakkie, stopped after being signalled by what appeared to be legitimate officials next to a white minibus. After handing over his driver’s license, he was told it had expired and was asked to accompany them for verification. Moments later, the supposed officers forcibly pulled him into their vehicle, leaving his bakkie behind. He was later dumped in a ditch in Protea, Soweto, before managing to find help. The incident has raised serious concerns about the growing trend of criminals using blue lights and uniforms to deceive motorists. Khutsong Woman Robbed at Gunpoint During Home Invasion In Khutsong Extension 5, a 48-year-old woman faced a terrifying ordeal during a pre-dawn home invasion. Around 01:50, intruders broke through her window and forced their way into her bedroom. Two armed suspects, one speaking Sesotho, demanded money before stealing her cellphone and meat from the house. The robbers fled on foot, and police have since opened a case of house robbery. The incident highlights ongoing safety concerns in residential areas and the urgent need for improved security and community vigilance. Armed Robbery at Blyvoor Tuck Shop The week’s violence extended to Blyvoor, where two armed suspects targeted the Awet Tuck Shop in a bold daylight robbery. At around 15:00, the owner’s son and cousin were unloading stock when the robbers struck, forcing them to the ground at gunpoint. The assailants made off with mobile phones, cash, and an airtime machine before fleeing in a white Isuzu bakkie belonging to the business. Police have launched a full investigation and are appealing to the public to assist in locating the stolen vehicle and identifying the suspects. The attack has shaken small business owners who already operate under challenging conditions. Hijacking in Carletonville’s New Industrial Area Adding to the week’s crime surge, a man driving his employer’s Hyundai H100 was hijacked in the New Industrial Area. Three armed suspects in a blue Ford Figo intercepted the van on Haulage Street. The assailants took the vehicle’s keys and forced the driver into their car before speeding away toward Randfontein. The victim’s cellphone was also stolen, but he later managed to reach safety and report the incident. Authorities are investigating both kidnapping and hijacking charges, urging the public to report any sightings or information linked to the stolen vehicle and suspects. Community Response and Police Appeal The string of crimes has left Carletonville residents alarmed and calling for stronger policing measures, especially on major routes like the R501 and in vulnerable residential zones. Police have reassured the public that investigations are ongoing and that patrols will be intensified to curb such incidents. • Klerksdorp: A Week of Action, Tragedy, and Community Spirit

Klerksdorp once again found itself in the public eye this week, as a series of events, from fast police action and tragic incidents to sporting success and heartfelt remembrance, shaped the city’s headlines. The week reflected both the resilience and challenges faced by residents across the Matlosana region. Image: The Go-To Guy Creations Swift Police Action Leads to Arrest After Car Theft Police acted promptly following a vehicle theft that occurred earlier in the week involving a white Mazda 3. The car was stolen on Monday, 13 October, during a test drive from a local dealership. The suspect allegedly asked the salesperson to go into a nearby shop to buy refreshments before driving off with the vehicle. Thanks to quick intelligence work, members of the Crime Intelligence Unit tracked the stolen car’s location, and tactical police units intercepted it on the N12 near Wolmaransstad. A 23-year-old man was arrested and was expected to appear in court in Wolmaransstad. The arrest has been praised as an example of effective coordination between local and regional law enforcement. Tragedy in Orkney: Two Men Overpowered by Methane Gas A tragic accident in Orkney shocked the community when two men lost their lives while attempting to clear a blocked manhole on Shakespeare Street. Authorities confirmed that the men were overpowered by methane gas and died at the scene. According to police reports, the victims were privately employed by a local businessman and were not working under a municipal contract. Investigations are underway to determine whether safety regulations were followed. The incident serves as a grim reminder of the dangers of working in confined spaces without proper equipment or supervision. Community Remembers Four Young Lives Lost The city united in grief as residents and families commemorated the first anniversary of the accident that claimed the lives of four young people: Ruan Esterhuizen, Jackie Willis, Max Knott-Craig, and Jané Janse van Rensburg. A convoy of vehicles and motorcycles retraced the route of the fatal crash before gathering at the intersection where the tragedy occurred. Flowers and candles were placed at the memorial site as hundreds of residents stood together in remembrance. Private investigators have since been appointed to reopen the case, with families expressing hope for renewed progress toward justice. Jewellery Store Robbery Sparks Public Outrage In another dramatic event, six armed men stormed a jewellery store inside the Pick n Pay Hypermarket, smashing display cases and taking jewellery and watches before fleeing. The brazen daylight robbery caused widespread panic among shoppers, some of whom sought refuge in nearby stores. Police recovered the getaway vehicle but have not yet made any arrests. The incident has prompted renewed calls for improved mall security and better protection for retailers. Service Delivery Crisis Continues to Deepen Klerksdorp and several nearby towns, including Wolmaransstad and Hartbeesfontein, remain under pressure due to severe service delivery failures. Ongoing sanitation, water, and electricity challenges have disrupted daily life and crippled local businesses. The Democratic Alliance has called for urgent intervention, citing raw sewage overflows in Orkney and prolonged electricity outages in Wolmaransstad. In Klerksdorp, residents have been asked to submit their own water and electricity meter readings after the city’s contract with a service provider expired. The municipality has assured the public that billing will continue without disruption. CFO Corruption Case Gains Momentum The Hawks’ investigation into the City of Matlosana’s Chief Financial Officer, Mercy Phetla, continues to unfold following the seizure of three luxury vehicles valued at R2.7 million. The vehicles, a Mercedes Benz CLA200, a Range Rover Evoque, and a Maserati Levante S, are linked to an alleged R6 million fraud case. Phetla has denied owning the vehicles and dismissed the claims as false. The case will proceed in the Specialised Commercial Crime Court in Klerksdorp later this month, with investigators viewing the preservation order as a key step toward accountability. Murder Case Returns to Court The long-standing case involving Quinn van der Bergh, accused of the 2022 murder of his ex-girlfriend, Barbara Groenewald, has officially returned to the Klerksdorp court roll. Van der Bergh, previously released after delays in prosecution, has been re-summoned and granted bail. The case has been postponed to November as further evidence is gathered. Klerksdorp Comes Alive at the 15th Sewes Festival Amid a week of heavy news, the city also celebrated community spirit and talent during the 15th annual Sewes Festival, hosted at Klerksdorp High School. The event featured 48 rugby teams, 64 netball teams, and 16 hockey teams, alongside a music festival that drew enthusiastic crowds. Performers included popular artists such as Jo Black, Robbie Wessels, Juan Boucher, Loufi, and Barto, who entertained festivalgoers with high-energy performances. • Potch WhatsApp Weekly Service Delivery & Safety Update

Covering Key Alerts and Resident Concerns Potchefstroom residents were once again quick to raise concerns and share alerts on their local WhatsApp groups this past week. From malfunctioning traffic lights and refuse collection delays to fire hazards and electricity billing confusion, the community's digital conversations offered a real-time reflection of daily service challenges and safety risks. This update highlights the most significant issues that affected neighbourhoods between 10 and 16 October 2025. Image: The Go-To Guy Creations 🛑 Traffic Alert: Malfunctioning Robot at Key Intersection Multiple reports were received this week about the broken three-way traffic light at the intersection of Chief Albert Luthuli Drive and Govan Mbeki Avenue . According to councillors and residents, the lights are simultaneously showing red and green , or switching to green and immediately back to red. The situation remains dangerous, especially during peak traffic periods and Aardklop-related congestion, and has been reported to the relevant authorities. Motorists are urged to proceed with extreme caution. 🔥 Wildfire Hazards Impact Visibility On 15 October , smoke from a wildfire near Technical High School  significantly reduced visibility along MC Roode Road . Councillors urged residents to reduce speed and switch on headlights  when driving in the area. This incident highlights the seasonal fire risks and reinforces the need for local vigilance. 💡 Power Outages and Streetlight Reporting Ward representatives issued requests for help identifying non-functional streetlights  outside local businesses. Due to personal obligations, some councillors were unable to conduct after-dark inspections, and residents were asked to submit photos and exact locations  for follow-up action. Meanwhile, scattered power outages  across areas like Bloem Street , Beyers Naude , and Kamp Straat  were reported, with cable theft again contributing to disruptions. 🚛 Refuse Removal Disruptions Continue Service interruptions for refuse collection  remained a recurring theme. On 15 October , residents were informed of truck breakdowns  and a severe backlog , prompting uncertainty about collection routes. Despite initial delays, updates on 16 October  confirmed that all areas without municipal wheelie bins were being serviced on the usual Thursday route. Councillors shared that JB Marks’ mechanical teams  were working with urgency, and notices about catch-up plans would follow. 🚰 Ongoing Water Issues and Pressure Complaints A major water leak  was identified near the railway behind Soetdoring Street , pumping clean water at high pressure. Access to the site was complicated by terrain, but efforts were made by JB Marks and Parks  departments to clear the way for infrastructure repairs . Multiple residents also reported persistently low water pressure  near the hospital  and train tracks, prompting continued investigations. 🗑 Dangerous Waste Disposal Practices Highlighted Community conversations also surfaced around the improper disposal of TVs and fluorescent tubes . One resident reported placing an old TV outside for removal, only to learn that it contains materials reportedly used in illegal drug manufacturing . The community was advised to rather drop such items at approved recyclers , such as Mico Scrap Metals  or verified facilities like Deswalner . 📉 Prepaid Electricity Pricing Concerns for Businesses Several business owners raised concerns over unexpectedly low prepaid electricity units  received after larger top-up payments. Clarification followed that business electricity tariffs are higher  than residential ones and follow a monthly sliding scale , meaning bigger purchases within the same month may yield proportionally fewer units. 🛣 Road Accidents and Delays A motor vehicle accident (MVA)  was reported on Govan Mbeki Road near the Viljoenskroon turnoff  on 14 October , obstructing one lane. Motorists were advised to avoid the area if possible while emergency services responded to the scene. Thank you to all residents who continue to engage proactively through group chats and councillor feedback loops. Your vigilance and updates are key to keeping Potchefstroom informed and safe. Final Chat Ongoing technical faults, public safety concerns, and waste collection disruptions show just how dependent residents are on active communication platforms and municipal responsiveness. The updates shared this past week serve as a reminder of the importance of consistent service delivery, community accountability, and quick reporting when issues arise. 🔦🚛⚠️ #TheGoToGuy #PotchUpdate #ServiceDelivery #SafetyFirst #WardWatch

With momentum swinging and belief high, it’s time for the Dragons to roar back into the game. 🐉💪 Image: North West Dragons This 4-Day Series clash is heating up, and the Dragons are showing the kind of grit that champions are made of. 🏏 🔥🏏 🔥🏏 🔥🏏 🔥🏏 🔥 #DragonsRising #RubinHermann #MaidenCentury #DianForrester #4DaySeries #NewlandsBattle #DragonsUnleashed #BringYourFire #WozaNawe
