The North-West University (NWU) continues to affirm its place as a powerhouse of talent, not just in academics but in the arts. This October, two of its brightest dance stars are preparing to take their passion across borders, while the university’s orchestral and vocal performers recently brought the Momentum Aardklop Nasionale Kunstefees to a breathtaking close. Tebogo Baas and Matlhogonolo Bodibe to Represent SA at World Dance Championships Dedication, rhythm, and teamwork have carried Tebogo Baas  and Matlhogonolo Bodibe  all the way to the world stage. Their journey to this point has been one of perseverance and passion. After months of rigorous training, national qualifiers, and competitive performances, the talented duo earned their place in the Youth Championship Latin category , where they will face some of the world’s best dancers. Both Baas and Bodibe attribute their success to unwavering discipline, strong teamwork, and the continued encouragement from their coach, teammates, and families. While NWU’s dancers prepare to captivate audiences abroad, the university’s Symphony Orchestra and choirs  recently took center stage in Potchefstroom for the finale of the Momentum Aardklop Nasionale Kunstefees , a week of artistic brilliance that filled the town with theatre, music, and creativity. • Spring Rains in Potchefstroom: Keeping Windows, Solar Panels, and Carpets Spotless

Spring has arrived in Potchefstroom, bringing blooming flowers, warmer days and a flurry of dust and pollen in the air . As nature reawakens, residents and businesses also face the challenges of the changing season. Image : Facebook Imperial Specialist Cleaning Services A dry winter often leaves a fine layer of dust on everything, and now spring’s breezes spread yellow pollen that clings to surfaces. Add to that the onset of the rainy season , with those first refreshing showers that unfortunately leave streaks on windows and mud on floors and our homes and workplaces can start to look a little worse for wear. If you’ve noticed hazy solar panels, rain-spotted windows, or carpets feeling damp and musty, you’re not alone. These spring and rainy-season issues are exactly what Imperial Specialist Cleaning Services of Potchefstroom tackles best. In this article, we explore why professional cleaning for your solar panels, windows, and carpets is so important this time of year, and how Imperial’s local experts can rejuvenate your property to pristine condition. Image : Facebook Imperial Specialist Cleaning Services Spring Showers & Dusty Breezes: Seasonal Cleaning Challenges Potchefstroom’s spring is a season of contrasts. The city enjoys bright sunshine and new greenery, but also increased pollen and dust  that settle everywhere. That yellowish film on your window glass or solar panels? It’s likely pollen mixed with dust, which can become stubborn and hard to remove over time . Experts actually recommend thorough cleaning after the peak pollen season to avoid buildup that sticks to surfaces . Indoors, pollen and dust find their way into carpets and upholstery, where they can trigger allergies and degrade air quality . Then come the rain showers, welcome for the parched soil, but not so kind to our windows and panels. Rain itself is fairly clean, but if it hits a dirty window or dusty solar panel, the water droplets cling to the grime and create noticeable streaks and spots . In other words, the rain makes existing dirt more visible  rather than washing it all away. Even a steady downpour may fail to rinse off all the pollen on solar panels; a recent study found that heavy spring pollen can cut solar panel output by as much as 15% and rain alone wasn’t enough to restore lost performance . And what about our carpets? During the rainy season, moisture tracked in by shoes and the high humidity can settle into carpet fibers, creating a perfect breeding ground for mildew and odors . Damp carpets can develop unpleasant smells, promote mold growth, and trap allergens like dust mites and bacteria , not to mention they feel unpleasant underfoot. Faced with this one-two punch of spring dust  and rainy-season residue , it’s clear that a normal cleaning routine might not be enough. This is where Imperial Specialist Cleaning Services steps in as Potchefstroom’s trusted local expert. Imperial offers specialised springtime cleaning solutions for windows, solar panels, and carpets, three areas hit hardest by pollen, rain, and moisture. Let’s look at each of these services and why they’re especially beneficial right now. Window Cleaning: Crystal Clear Views, Rain or Shine   A professional from Imperial Specialist Cleaning Services cleans a high exterior window using purified water and a water-fed pole system. There’s nothing like sparkling clean windows to let in the bright spring sunshine – or to convey a professional image for your business. Conversely, dusty, streaky windows can really drag down the appearance of a property. In fact, clean windows can be “the difference between an average and an amazing business or home,” as Imperial’s team likes to say . During spring, Potchefstroom’s winds carry dust and pollen that leave a hazy coating on glass. If not cleaned promptly, pollen can leave a yellowish film that becomes harder to scrub off over time . And once the rains start, that grime causes raindrops to dry in ugly streaks and spots , meaning your view of the blooming outdoors is marred by watermarks and dirt. Regular rain alone won’t solve the problem, if anything, it makes dirt more obvious on already-dirty windows . The best solution is a professional window cleaning, and spring is the perfect time to do it. Imperial Specialist Cleaning Services has refined window cleaning to an art. Their technicians use a purified water-fed pole system that can reach windows up to five storeys high directly from the ground . This advanced equipment allows the team to clean exterior glass safely and efficiently without ladders or scaffolding. Purified water is the key, it leaves no mineral residue or streaks when it dries . The result? Crystal-clear, streak-free glass that truly  sparkles, even after it rains. By removing all the dust and pollen, Imperial ensures that when the next rain shower comes, there’s no grime for the water to cling to , your windows will dry clear and spotless. For homeowners, that means enjoying unobstructed views of the lovely spring scenery. For businesses, it means a brilliant first impression on customers. Shiny, clean windows show that you take pride in your property, and they brighten up the inside of your space as well. Plus, maintaining clean windows can even prolong their lifespan by preventing etching from dirt or mineral deposits over time . Imperial’s window cleaning service covers inside and out , for all kinds of glass features. They handle not just standard windows but also skylights, glass doors, and even signage for commercial clients . Importantly for office parks and multi-story buildings, Imperial’s high-reach system and trained staff make it possible to get those top-floor windows gleaming without hassle . And they do it fast  , up to 70% faster than traditional window-washing methods, according to the company’s stats . Faster cleaning means less disruption for you and more cost-effective service. With Imperial’s professional touch, your windows will be ready to face both the spring sunshine and the next rainstorm with equal clarity. Image : Facebook Imperial Specialist Cleaning Services Solar Panel Cleaning: Harness the Spring Sun Efficiently Springtime in Potchefstroom brings longer, sunnier days; ideal for generating solar power, as many local homes and businesses do. But if your solar panels are coated in dust or pollen, they might not be soaking up nearly as much of that sunshine as you think. It’s easy to overlook, since panels are often on rooftops or high mounts, but keeping them clean is crucial for maximum energy efficiency . Even a thin layer of dust or pollen can noticeably decrease a solar panel’s output . Researchers have found that during heavy pollen season, solar farm panels suffered up to a 15% drop in performance purely due to pollen buildup and normal rainfall wasn’t enough to wash it away . In our region, with plenty of trees and spring blooms, your rooftop solar panels could be losing a significant chunk of their potential simply because they’re dirty. Imperial Specialist Cleaning Services has made solar panel cleaning one of its specialties, knowing how vital this service is for Potchefstroom’s eco-conscious residents. Their team uses gentle, specialized techniques  to remove dust, pollen, and grime from solar panels without causing any damage . Solar panels are delicate technology, scrubbing them improperly or using harsh chemicals can scratch the surfaces or harm the coatings. Imperial’s professionals are trained to clean panels safely, often using purified water and soft-bristle brushes or other non-abrasive methods to lift away the dirt. The goal is to restore your panels to optimal performance, so they can capture the maximum sunlight available . The benefits of this service are immediate: by clearing the layer of grime, Imperial helps your solar array produce more electricity right away . You’ll generate more power and increase your energy savings, especially important now as spring sunshine ramps up. In essence, a clean panel can soak up the full intensity of the sun , whereas a dirty one is like a cloudy day, suboptimal. Industry experts note that accumulated pollen and dust not only reduce efficiency but, when mixed with rain, can form a sticky residue that might even lead to long-term surface damage if not addressed . Regular cleaning prevents such buildup. Imperial’s approach protects your investment in solar technology: they ensure each panel is cleaned thoroughly without  voiding warranties or scratching the glass. By trusting Imperial, you’re making sure your solar panels work as efficiently as possible throughout the spring and into the high-yield summer months. It’s a small maintenance step that pays for itself in energy output and extends the lifespan of your solar installation . Importantly, Imperial offers this service across the North West province and is seeing high demand for it in our sun-soaked region. Potchefstroom’s sunny climate is great for solar power – and with Imperial’s help, local solar owners can keep those panels shining clean for peak performance. Don’t let dust and pollen dim your solar gains; a quick professional cleaning will have your panels gleaming and your system running at full capacity again. Carpet Cleaning: Keeping Interiors Fresh and Dry After months of being closed up in winter, our homes and offices deserve a good spring refresh inside as well. One area that often needs attention is the carpets , especially once rainy weather begins. In spring, people tend to start opening windows and doors to enjoy the breeze, which unfortunately also lets in more dust and pollen that settle into carpet fibers. Thick carpets act like filters, trapping allergens (pollen, dust mites, pet dander) that can build up and affect your indoor air quality . If you’ve been sneezing more or experiencing spring allergies, your rugs and carpets might be part of the problem. A deep cleaning will remove that invisible layer of spring allergens and make your interior environment healthier and more comfortable. Then comes the rain and with it, muddy shoes and damp footprints on your floors. During Potchefstroom’s rainy months, it’s almost inevitable that moisture gets tracked onto carpets. Even just higher ambient humidity can keep carpets feeling slightly damp. The moisture issue is more than just a comfort concern: wet or damp carpeting can develop mold, mildew, and bacteria  very quickly if not dried and cleaned properly . You might notice a musty odor in rooms with a rug that stayed wet too long, or even visible spots of mildew in extreme cases. Moreover, moisture helps other pollutants cling to carpet fibers ,dirt from shoes, pollen from the air, you name it ,causing deep grime that regular vacuuming won’t fully remove . Over time, this can even weaken the carpet’s fibers and shorten its lifespan . Clearly, after heavy use in the rainy season or a particularly wet spell, a professional deep carpet cleaning is essential to protect both your investment in the carpet and the health of those living or working on it. Imperial Specialist Cleaning Services provides expert carpet cleaning for both homes and businesses, ensuring your carpets are not only clean but truly deep-cleaned . Their technicians use industrial-grade equipment and safe, effective cleaning products to extract dirt, stains, and allergens from deep within the carpet pile . This isn’t just a surface shampoo, it’s a thorough process that revitalizes your carpeting. By the time Imperial is done, your carpets will look and feel refreshed, with that spring brightness restored to the colors. More importantly, they’ll be sanitised  and free of the hidden moisture and microbes that can cause odors or health issues. Imperial’s cleaning process removes the moisture and any residual muck that came with it, effectively preventing mold growth and eliminating musty smells . The result is not only a cleaner-looking carpet, but a healthier indoor environment with improved air quality. For allergy sufferers, having carpets cleaned at this time of year can make a noticeable difference. All those pollen grains and dust particles that lodged in the fibers are washed away, meaning fewer sneeze attacks when you’re relaxing on the couch. • Spring Maintenance: Keeping Gutters Clean and Roofs Leak-Free in Potchefstroom

Spring in Potchefstroom is a season of renewal, but it also brings unpredictable weather. Potchefstroom’s highveld climate can swing from scorching sun to sudden downpours . Image : Facebook Build It Potchefstroom One moment you’re enjoying a clear, warm day; the next, a surprise thunderstorm is drenching the town. These spring rains are a welcome relief after the dry winter, but they can quickly spell trouble for homeowners who haven’t prepared their roofs and gutters. Now is the perfect time to ensure your gutters are clear and your roof is leak-free. A little preventative maintenance this spring will protect your home when those heavy summer rains arrive. Why Clean Gutters in Spring? Your home’s rain gutters play a critical role in directing water away from the roof and foundation. Over the autumn and winter, leaves, dust, and debris may have accumulated in your gutters. If left uncleared, the first spring storms could clog them up, causing overflow. Clogged gutters are more than just an eyesore, they can lead to serious (and expensive) problems for your house. Here are some key issues that clean gutters help prevent: Roof Leaks and Water Damage:   When gutters are blocked, rainwater can’t drain properly. It may pool on the roof or under shingles, seeping into your roof structure. Over time this causes leaks, wood rot, and even interior ceiling damage . Keeping gutters clear ensures water flows off your roof as intended, protecting your home from moisture intrusion. Mold and Mildew:   Leaves and gunk that hold moisture become a breeding ground for mold. Standing water in clogged gutters or in the eaves encourages mold and mildew to grow, which can then spread into your roof materials and attic . This not only damages the structure but can also pose health risks to your family. Rotten Fascias and Roof Structure:   Gutters overflowing with debris will spill water over the sides, drenching the wooden fascia boards and soffits (the roof eaves). Constant wetness causes these elements to rot and weaken . In severe cases, the roof’s edge can deteriorate, undermining the structural support for your roof. Foundation and Garden Damage:   When water can’t go through a clogged gutter, it often cascades straight down the walls to the ground. This can lead to soil erosion around your house and water pooling near the foundation. Over time, a saturated foundation may crack or shift . If you have a basement, you could even experience flooding. Clean gutters channel water a safe distance away from your home’s base. Pest Infestations:   Believe it or not, dirty gutters can attract unwelcome critters. Wet leaves and stagnant water are a magnet for insects and pests. Mosquitoes love to breed in standing water, and damp debris can host ants, roaches, or even serve as nesting material for rodents . By keeping gutters clean, you remove the cozy habitat that these pests are looking for. As you can see, cleaning your gutters  is one of the simplest ways to safeguard your home during spring. It’s generally recommended to give your gutters a thorough cleaning at least twice a year, typically in spring and again in autumn . This regular maintenance ensures that when the big rainstorms hit, your gutters can do their job without any blockages. Image : Facebook Build It Potchefstroom Tips for Gutter Maintenance and Safety Clearing out gutters isn’t complicated, but it does require careful attention to safety and a bit of elbow grease. Here are some practical tips to keep in mind when you set out to clean your gutters this spring: Schedule on a Dry Day:   Choose a day with clear weather to work on gutters. It’s safer and more comfortable to clean debris when everything is dry, and you’ll avoid working in a storm. Early spring (before the heaviest rains) is ideal. Potchefstroom’s winter and early spring are relatively dry, so take advantage of that window to clear out the winter debris. Use the Right Tools: A sturdy ladder is a must, ensure it’s on level ground and have a friend or family member spot you if possible. Wear work gloves to protect your hands from sharp debris or gutter edges. A small plastic scoop or trowel can be helpful for digging out leaves and mud. You might also use a bucket or tarp to collect the gunk as you go. Once large debris is removed, flush the gutters with a garden hose to check that water runs freely through the downpipes. Check Downspouts:   Make sure your downspouts (vertical gutter pipes) are not blocked. You can run water from the hose down them; if it doesn’t flow out at the bottom, there may be a clog. Gently feed a long stick or use a plumber’s drain snake to dislodge any blockages. Ensuring downspouts are clear is crucial , even a clean gutter won’t help if the water can’t exit through the downpipe. Look for Trouble Spots:   While you’re up there, take a moment to inspect the gutters’ condition. Are there any sagging sections, rust holes, or joints starting to separate? Tighten any loose gutter hangers or brackets. If you notice extensive rust or damage, you may need to replace a section of gutter. Also check that the gutter is still properly aligned towards the downspout for good drainage (sometimes heavy debris can cause it to bend or pull away from the house). Consider Gutter Guards:   If trees surround your home and you constantly battle leaves, installing gutter mesh or guards can be a smart investment. Gutter mesh covers sit on top of the gutter and keep leaves out while still letting water through . This can drastically reduce how often you need to clean out the gutters. Build It Potchefstroom carries gutter mesh and can advise on the right type for your roof. Stay Safe:   Always prioritize safety. If your roof is very high or the job feels risky, don’t hesitate to call a professional to clean your gutters. No maintenance job is worth an injury. And remember, never work on a metal ladder during a thunderstorm , if you hear thunder, get down immediately. Potchefstroom’s storms can move in fast, so keep an eye on the weather forecast. By following these tips, you’ll keep your gutter system in great shape and ensure rainwater can flow where it’s supposed to: safely away from your home. Image : Facebook Build It Potchefstroom Roof Maintenance: Keeping Your Home Leak-Free With the gutters taken care of, turn your attention to the roof itself. Your roof has just endured the cold, dry winter and will soon face heavy spring and summer rains. Taking time now to do a spring roof check can save you from the frustration of drips or water damage later. Here’s how to make sure your roof is ready to handle the rain: 1. Inspect for Damage:   From the ground, do a visual scan of your roof (use binoculars if you have them) or carefully climb onto the roof if you’re experienced and it’s safe. Look for any cracked, loose, or missing roof tiles on tiled roofs, or lifted and bent metal sheeting on steel roofs. Pay extra attention around roof ridges and valleys, these are common areas where tiles crack or mortar can crumble. If you spot a broken or missing tile, replace it immediately to prevent a leak through that spot . For metal roofs, check for any sections that appear rusted through or any screws that have popped up. Loose roofing screws are a frequent culprit behind leaks in corrugated iron roofs; when screws aren’t tight or their rubber washers age and crack, wind-driven rain can seep in through those tiny gaps . 2. Don’t Forget Flashings and Seals:   Leaks often occur at the joints and edges of your roof. Flashings are the metal strips or coverings around chimneys, skylights, roof vents, or where different roof sections meet. Ensure that flashings are not lifting and that sealant isn’t dried out or peeling. Old or damaged flashing is a common source of leaks, since water can sneak in where the roof surface meets a wall or fixture. If you find any gaps, you can apply a roof-grade silicone or bitumen sealant as a temporary fix, but plan to repair or replace faulty flashings properly when you can. 3. Check Inside Your Roof and Ceilings:   Sometimes you can spot signs of trouble from inside. On a clear day, venture into your attic or roof space (with a flashlight) and look for any damp spots, water stains, or streaks on the underside of the roof or insulation. Also inspect your top-floor ceilings for yellowish-brown water stain rings. These are red flags that water has already infiltrated. If you find any, try to trace the source of the leak by looking above that area on the roof , often the leak entry point is a bit uphill (remember, water can travel along beams before dripping). One trick some homeowners use is to have someone spray sections of the roof with a garden hose while you watch inside for drips, to pinpoint the leak area . Just be very careful if you go on the roof for such a test, as it will become slippery when wet. 4. Clear Debris from the Roof:   Just as gutters need cleaning, the roof itself should be clear of debris. Piles of leaves, twigs, or dirt can trap moisture against the roofing material and eventually cause decay or mildew. In Potchefstroom’s dry season, dust and leaves often accumulate, then the first rains wash them into your gutters or create soggy patches on the roof. It’s wise to sweep or hose off your roof in late winter or early spring before the rains start . Pay attention to roof valleys (internal gutters formed where two roof slopes meet) as these tend to collect leaves. Removing debris not only prevents gutter clogs (as discussed) but also reduces places where water can dam up. Additionally, trim back any overhanging tree branches near the roof , this will minimize new leaves falling onto your roof and gutters during spring storms. 5. Fix Problems Early:  If during your inspection you discovered a section of roof that looks worse for wear, be it a few loose tiles, a small leak, or a rusty patch on a metal sheet, address it now, before the rains intensify. Small repairs are usually easy to do with the right materials: for instance, you can straighten a slipped tile or reposition one that was knocked out of place . Cracked tiles can be sealed with a bit of roofing cement or adhesive as a temporary measure, but plan to replace them soon. Metal roof issues like a minor hole or gap around a screw can be patched with a waterproof roofing tape or a dab of bitumen sealant. For larger jobs (like multiple tile replacements or re-coating a section), you may need to bring in a professional roofer, but getting it sorted now will be far cheaper and less stressful than dealing with an emergency leak later on. Remember, homeowners should inspect roofs at least twice a year, typically before the summer rains and before winter, to catch these issues in time . A spring check-up and tune-up for your roof will give you peace of mind for the wet season ahead. • La Montagne Fun Day: Carletonville’s Clubs Join Forces for a Day of Action and Laughter - 1 November

Carletonville is set for something completely new this November, a proper community get-together where the town’s sports clubs trade the sidelines for the spotlight. On 1 November 2025, La Montagne will play host to the La Montagne Fun Day, an event promising energy, teamwork, and more than a few moments of organised chaos. A Bit of Everything — and Everyone The day isn’t about competition or medals. It’s about everyone showing off what they love doing, and maybe discovering a new hobby while they’re at it. With local groups from dancers to karate kids taking part, there’s no chance of getting bored (or staying still for long). Beat Box Dance Studio will be shaking things up with five performances that’ll test the stage’s limits. Expect quick moves, big energy, and parents recording every second. Not to be outdone, Losberg Gymnastics will flip, twist, and tumble their way into the crowd’s hearts. The organisers have warned: keep your seats, but if you can’t, at least make sure you’re cheering the right way up. Then there’s Spartan Karate Dojo, bringing discipline and focus, and a few impressive “Oss!” moments, under the guidance of their own Shihan Kruban, who’s basically Carletonville’s Mr Miyagi. Running, Riding, and a Bit of Showing Off For those who prefer action over applause, WeRan Fochville is hosting fun runs of 2.5km and 5km. Whether you’re a seasoned runner or just chasing someone who owes you a coffee, this is your chance to get moving, no medals, just bragging rights. A Proper Community Effort And because it’s La Montagne, it wouldn’t be complete without horses. The Equestrian Students will take to the arena in their chosen outfits for performances that promise elegance, a bit of showmanship, and hopefully no surprises from the horses. The event’s not just for spectators. Any local sports club is invited to get involved, the more, the merrier. It’s all about showing what Carletonville can do when everyone pulls in the same direction (and remembers where they put their kit).
