- Military Skills Competition 2025 Opens in Potchefstroom with Parade and Briefings
The 18th edition of the Chief of the South African National Defence Force’s Military Skills Competition (MILCOMP) officially opened in Potchefstroom with a ceremonial parade and formal competitor briefings. Hosted at the Kopanelo Military Sports Club, Army Support Base Potchefstroom, the event runs from 28 September to 04 October 2025 and features both South African and international military participants. Since its launch in 2006, MILCOMP has evolved into a flagship event for the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), symbolising skill, discipline, and international camaraderie. Opening Parade: A Celebration of Military Excellence On 29 September 2025, the opening parade set the tone for a week of demanding physical and tactical challenges. Soldiers from Botswana, Mozambique, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Zambia, and Zimbabwe joined South African Regulars and Reserves on the parade ground, raising their national flags in solidarity. The event’s Main Functionary, Major General P.N. Dube , presided on behalf of Lieutenant General L.K. Mbatha, Chief of the South African Army, and General R. Maphwanya, Chief of the SANDF. He praised the preparation of South African competitors, particularly their performance in the Fittest Soldier contests and their medal-winning representation at the Inter-allied Confederation of Reserve Non-commissioned Officers' Military Competition in Finland. Competitor Briefing: Rules, Safety, and Preparedness Following the formal parade, participants attended a comprehensive briefing designed to ensure discipline, safety, and cohesion throughout the event. The session was led by Lieutenant Colonel T.S. Keketsi , Officer Commanding of Barney Molokoane Intelligence Regiment. His presentation focused on essential security protocols under the theme “Do’s and Don’ts in and around Potchefstroom.” Complementing the safety briefing, Major D. Labuschagne from Chief Army Force Preparation’s Physical Training, Sport and Recreation division, outlined the rules and regulations governing each of the competition categories. He also introduced the official social media platforms providing daily coverage of MILCOMP 2025. Further details were shared by Captain J.J.P. de Vries , communications coordinator from the Directorate South African Army Reserves, who explained the digital publishing schedule aimed at keeping both participants and the public informed. Preparing for Competition: Familiarisation and Training Grounds After the formal briefings, competitors moved to the designated event spaces to begin familiarisation. These included: Land Obstacle Course – testing endurance, agility, and tactical movement. Water Obstacle Course – combining aquatic challenges with coordination and stamina. Grenade Throwing Course – requiring precision, timing, and control. Rifle and Pistol Ranges – focusing on marksmanship under pressure. The atmosphere was described as both focused and collegial, with teams balancing discipline and mutual encouragement. While international rivalry is part of the competition’s spirit, the emphasis remains on learning, cooperation, and professional growth. International Participation and Camaraderie MILCOMP’s significance lies not only in its competitive nature but also in its role as a platform for international military cooperation. With representatives from Africa and Europe participating, the event provides opportunities for exchange of expertise, strengthening partnerships, and enhancing interoperability between defence forces. Past editions of the competition have fostered long-lasting bonds between participating nations, and this year’s event continues that tradition. For SANDF, hosting international counterparts also provides an opportunity to benchmark training standards and operational readiness against global peers. Looking Ahead: A Week of Challenges and Achievement As MILCOMP 2025 unfolds, competitors are set to face a demanding schedule of events designed to test both physical and mental resilience. From obstacle courses to precision shooting, every stage of the competition is intended to reflect the diverse skills required in modern military service. For the South African hosts, the event also serves as a showcase of the SANDF’s capacity to organise large-scale, internationally recognized competitions, reinforcing Potchefstroom’s role as a hub for military sports and training. Wrap-Up The opening parade and competitor briefing for the Military Skills Competition 2025 marked the beginning of a week dedicated to excellence, discipline, and unity. With strong representation from both local and international forces, the event highlights the SANDF’s commitment to professional development and international cooperation. As the competition continues throughout the week, the eyes of the defence community remain on Potchefstroom, where military skill and camaraderie are celebrated side by side. - JB Marks Daily Progress Report Highlights Water, Sewer, and Waste Achievements
The JB Marks Local Municipality has issued its daily progress report reflecting service delivery actions across multiple departments. The update, last recorded on 29 September 2025 at 19:55, covers repairs in water services, sewer management, waste collection, and infrastructure upgrades. While certain departments are still pending reports, the municipality emphasized notable achievements in essential services such as leak repairs, blockage clearance, waste collection, and reservoir management. Image: JB Marks Water Services: Leak Repairs and Infrastructure Protection The water services division reported significant progress in addressing leaks, pipe bursts, and valve replacements across various neighborhoods. Two supervisors, Ntate Mpho Kometsi and Ntate Sebatana, coordinated operations at multiple sites. Supervisor Kometsi oversaw the installation of a new gate valve in Siyabulela Street, replacement of a burst connection tee in Tswelelopele Street, and several connection repairs including at Kweti and Makgwoa Streets. Excavation trenches in Tswelelopele were also closed with crusher sand to secure previously disturbed areas. Meanwhile, Supervisor Sebatana managed work in Mare Street, Arabelang Street, and Extension 11, where multiple meter leaks and connection issues were resolved. New installations were also completed in Sekhute and Tlhapi Streets. Together, the teams resolved more than a dozen water-related problems in a single day, reinforcing the municipality’s commitment to minimising wastage and improving supply reliability. Sewer Services: Preventing Public Health Hazards Sewer maintenance operations were led by Supervisor Ntate Motsamai, who coordinated six interventions across Khutsong. These included unblocking manholes and clearing mainlines in Letsholo, Mokgobo, and along Modiboa and Nkosi. Additional blockages were removed in Kgaratlho and Lekhele. By addressing these issues promptly, the sewer team mitigated potential health risks linked to overflow and contamination. The municipality noted that such interventions are vital for safeguarding public health, particularly in densely populated neighborhoods. Waste Management: Full Collection Despite Equipment Challenges Waste management supervisors, Sipho Nxamakele and Felicity Jansen, confirmed that household bins, business premises, and identified hotspots all achieved a 100 percent collection rate. This was despite a reported reduction in available equipment, with one truck out of service. The municipality credited the achievement to longer working hours and resource adjustments, emphasising that maintaining clean streets remains a priority. The update underscored that uninterrupted waste services are central to community hygiene and environmental sustainability. Image: JB Marks Reservoir Levels: System-Wide Update A detailed water system report reflected generally positive recovery trends across reservoirs supplying the JB Marks region. Vyfhoek Complex: All reservoirs, including the 6.4ML and two 3.4ML reservoirs, reported full capacity and optimal supply to northern suburbs. Old Works Reservoir: Recovery reached 77.27%, ensuring improved supply to the central business district and industrial areas. Ventersdorp Road Reservoirs: Levels ranged between 57.14% and 67.86%, indicating gradual but stable recovery. Ikageng Area: The main reservoir reported 90.91% capacity, while the west reservoir achieved full supply. Eesterandjies Complex: Capacity was recorded at 27.27% due to ongoing maintenance. The municipality described the overall system as showing steady improvement, with significant progress in securing stable water supply. Ikageng Reservoir Pump Station Upgrade Completed One of the day’s key highlights was the completion of the Ikageng Reservoir Pump Station upgrade. The project included installation of new bases for Pump No. 8, motor alignment, pipeline replacement, generator installation, and bulk pipeline upgrades. The final step, commissioning, is now underway. According to the municipality, this infrastructure improvement will provide reliable water supply to Ikageng and surrounding extensions for decades to come, marking a milestone in long-term service delivery planning. Departments Pending Reports While progress was reported in water, sewer, waste, and infrastructure upgrades, several departments had not yet submitted updates. These include paving, road marking, electrical services, parks, and certain urban water and sewer teams. The municipality urged these divisions to improve reporting in order to ensure their work is acknowledged and integrated into the daily accountability process. Image: JB Marks Community Notices Residents were also informed of upcoming activities affecting roads and paving. Work on Sooliman Street will continue, while Tambo Street in Extension 11 is scheduled for paving in the near future. Temporary access restrictions are expected during construction. Contact numbers for roads, disaster services, electricity, and sewer issues were also provided to the public. Wrap-Up The JB Marks Local Municipality’s daily report highlighted 13 resolved water infrastructure issues, six sewer blockages cleared, 100 percent waste collection achieved despite reduced resources, seven reservoirs showing strong recovery, and the successful completion of a major pump station upgrade. More than 40 municipal staff members contributed to these results. While challenges remain and certain departments have yet to provide updates, the progress reflects ongoing efforts to balance urgent repairs with long-term infrastructure investments. The municipality stated that continued monitoring, transparency, and resource coordination will remain essential in ensuring consistent service delivery for residents. #TheGoToGuy #potchefstroom #JBMarks #ServiceDelivery #WaterSecurity #CommunityUpdate #Infrastructure 🚰🗑️🚧🏗️
- Nóg 'n student doodgeskok by Potchefstroom Treinstasie
In ‘n oogwink is ‘n lewe verby.

- NWU crowned Varsity Netball 2025 Champions in epic battle
The Varsity Netball 2025 final at the Callie Human Hall in Bloemfontein served up all the drama and excitement fans could have wished for. In front of a passionate, buzzing crowd, NWU stunned defending champions UFS Kovsies with a thrilling 57–49 victory. It was a historic night for the Eagles, who clinched their third Varsity Netball title, and their first since 2016. Their last appearance in the final came in 2022, when they were edged out by Maties, making this triumph all the sweeter. First Half: Neck-and-Neck Battle After the national anthem, the game burst into life with NWU striking first. Kovsies were slow to settle until Liame de Lange’s crucial interception allowed the hosts to draw level before edging ahead. NWU countered with patient build-up play, using measured passing to stay in touch. Fierce defensive efforts on both sides kept the scores tight, with Kovsies holding a slender 13–12 advantage after the first quarter. In the second, the defending champions sought to break free by attempting longer, riskier passes. But accuracy deserted them, and NWU’s defenders Jessica Matjiu and Martiné Jordaan worked tirelessly to disrupt star shooter Mari du Raan. With goals hard to come by, both teams merely doubled their tallies, and the Kovsies went into halftime 26–24 ahead. Third Quarter: Kovsies Stretch Ahead The penultimate period saw NWU’s Sunel Smit use her height to keep the scoreboard moving, but Kovsies’ Tandolwetho Mokoena disrupted NWU attacks and ignited the home fans. Both sides held back their power plays, heightening the tension. Kovsies continued their consistent scoring pace with another 13 goals, while NWU faltered slightly with just 10. Heading into the final quarter, the scoreboard read 39–34 in Kovsies’ favour. Final Quarter: Eagles Take Flight With everything on the line, Du Raan and Xandri Fourie kept Kovsies in the contest, dominating the attacking circle. After the first power play, the teams were level, setting up a nail-biting finish. But once NWU edged ahead, the once-vocal home crowd fell silent. The Eagles unleashed their best netball in the dying minutes, capitalising during the second power play to score unanswered goals and storm clear. - SPAR Baby Proteas Finish Fourth in Historic World Cup Run
The SPAR Baby Proteas closed out their 2025 Netball World Youth Cup campaign in Gibraltar with a fourth-place finish, their best-ever result at the under-21 global showpiece. Despite falling short of the podium after a semi-final loss to Australia (67–36) and a bronze medal play-off defeat to England (55–35) , the team captured the hearts of South African supporters and carved their name into the history books with a run filled with resilience, ambition, and breakthrough achievements. Semi-Final Challenge Against Australia On 26 September , the Baby Proteas faced their toughest test yet in the semi-finals against Australia , one of netball’s most decorated nations. Having topped Pool D with four straight wins and secured a historic quarterfinal triumph over the Cook Islands, South Africa entered the clash with confidence but aware of the scale of the task ahead. From the outset, Australia asserted dominance, forcing South Africa into rushed passes and long feeds that disrupted their rhythm. The Baby Proteas fought bravely but trailed 19–9 at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter brought some improvement as South Africa settled, yet Australia’s relentless pressure stretched the halftime score to 34–17 . Head coach Precious Mthembu introduced tactical changes in the third quarter, but the Australians continued to control possession, moving into a 48–27 lead after 45 minutes . The final quarter saw Australia close the match with authority, finishing 67–36 and booking a place in the final against New Zealand. For South Africa, the result ended their dream of competing for gold, but ensured they would play for bronze, already an unprecedented achievement. Quarter Score Breakdown (vs Australia): Q1: 09–19 Q2: 17–34 Q3: 27–48 Q4: 36–67 Starting VII vs Australia: GS – Mbali Diphoko GA – Luane Smith WA – Karla Victor C – Kyla Dames WD – Phophi Nematangari (C) GD – Luca Keun GK – Ametisse Bandu Bronze Medal Showdown with England On 28 September , the Baby Proteas lined up against England for a chance to claim South Africa’s first-ever Youth World Cup medal. The match began cautiously, with both teams showing signs of fatigue after a demanding tournament. South Africa trailed narrowly after the first quarter, 9–8 , despite tactical changes from Mthembu, who introduced Renezia Andrews to freshen the attack. England, however, capitalised on errors in the second quarter, punishing turnovers to establish a 25–15 halftime lead . The Baby Proteas tried to fight back in the championship quarter but struggled to sustain momentum, scoring 10 goals to England’s 13. Entering the final 15 minutes behind 38–25 , South Africa faced an uphill battle. In the last quarter, England pressed their advantage, while South Africa, showing signs of tired legs after a long campaign, faltered in both midfield and attack. England closed out the game 55–35 , claiming the bronze medal and leaving South Africa to finish in fourth place. Quarter Score Breakdown (vs England): Q1: 08–09 Q2: 15–25 Q3: 25–38 Q4: 35–55 Starting VII vs England: GS – Giada Prinsloo GA – Luane Smith WA – Kayla Dames C – Karla Victor WD – Phophi Nematangari (C) GD – Luca Keun GK – Ametisse Bandu A Record-Breaking Finish While the bronze medal slipped from their grasp, the Baby Proteas’ fourth-place finish is their best-ever result at a Netball World Youth Cup, surpassing their previous high of fifth. Across the tournament, South Africa displayed attacking flair, defensive resilience, and the ability to compete with the world’s strongest nations. From their opening 102–27 win against Barbados , to their commanding 105–15 victory over Trinidad and Tobago , a hard-fought triumph over Malawi (64–33) , and a confident win against Fiji (86–35) , the Baby Proteas proved they could dominate the group stage. Their quarterfinal win over the Cook Islands, which secured a historic semi-final berth, was the defining milestone of their campaign. Though they fell short against global giants Australia and England, the Baby Proteas leave Gibraltar with invaluable experience, a stronger sense of identity, and the confidence to build towards future international competitions. Final Whistle The SPAR Baby Proteas’ journey at the 2025 Netball World Youth Cup was more than a campaign, it was a statement of progress for South African netball. A team once considered outsiders became genuine contenders, inspiring future generations and elevating the nation’s reputation on the world stage. Fourth place may not bring a medal, but it represents history, pride, and the promise of greater achievements to come. - Durban Delight: Springboks Run Riot with 67-30 Win Over Argentina
The Springboks produced one of their most commanding attacking displays of recent years to defeat Argentina 67–30 at Hollywoodbets Kings Park in Durban on Saturday, 27 September 2025. In front of more than 45,000 spectators, the South Africans ran in nine tries, including a record-breaking 37-point haul from flyhalf Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, who scored three tries and contributed with the boot in a performance that rewrote the history books. The emphatic victory propelled the Springboks to the top of the Rugby Championship standings with one round to play, underlining their intent to retain the title. For Argentina, the match was a painful reminder of the fine margins in Test rugby: after staying in touch during an absorbing first half, they were blown away in the final 40 minutes by the relentless power and precision of the home side. A First Half of Twists and Turns The Durban crowd witnessed a rollercoaster opening half as both teams traded momentum. South Africa struck first through a long-range penalty from Feinberg-Mngomezulu, but Argentina responded with two accurate strikes from Santiago Carreras. The Pumas dominated territory early, aided by South Africa’s repeated offside infringements, yet their own malfunctioning lineout prevented them from fully capitalising. When Malcolm Marx powered over from a driving maul for his 25th Test try, the Springboks appeared to settle, but defensive lapses and a costly error gave Argentina hope. A misjudged goal-line drop-out by Cheslin Kolbe handed Santiago Chocobares a try, while a penalty try from a collapsed maul shifted the visitors into the lead. However, Feinberg-Mngomezulu showed his class with a superbly taken try just before halftime, ensuring the Springboks edged ahead 25–23 at the interval. Second-Half Brilliance and Total Control The second half belonged entirely to the Springboks. From the restart, a brilliant aerial contest won by Damian Willemse created the platform for Kolbe to cross for his second try, stretching the lead. Moments later, Feinberg-Mngomezulu produced a moment of individual genius, selling a dummy close to the Argentine try line before finishing clinically for his hat-trick. Argentina briefly threatened through Tomás Albornoz’s sharp solo effort, reducing the deficit to nine points. But that would be their final contribution to the scoreboard, as the Springboks unleashed a relentless attacking surge. Replacement scrumhalf Morné van den Berg crossed after fluid offloads, Pieter-Steph du Toit added two tries of his own, and Manie Libbok chipped and chased for a try that capped a flowing move. The final flourish arrived in the closing minutes, when Feinberg-Mngomezulu slotted his eighth conversion to bring his personal tally to 37 points, surpassing Percy Montgomery’s long-standing record of 35 points in a Test match set in 2007. Feinberg-Mngomezulu’s Record-Breaking Night At just 22 years old, Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu announced himself as a generational talent with a performance that combined tactical maturity, attacking flair, and unerring accuracy from the tee. His 37 points set a new Springbok record for a single Test, eclipsing Percy Montgomery’s milestone and overtaking Handré Pollard’s 31 points against Argentina in 2019. The young flyhalf’s numbers were staggering: 13 ball carries 3 tries 37 points in total 182 metres gained 11 defenders beaten 1 offload It was a display that showcased his all-round abilities: running, kicking, decision-making, and leadership. In doing so, Feinberg-Mngomezulu established himself not only as the match-winner but also as a central figure in the Boks’ evolving attacking identity. Tactical Shifts and Forward Dominance Beyond individual brilliance, the Springboks’ second-half performance reflected significant tactical evolution. Their scrum remained a weapon, forcing penalties and sapping Argentine resistance. The lineout, steady throughout, provided the launchpad for both direct mauls and expansive plays. Defensively, South Africa adapted after a shaky start, tightening their spacing and reducing Argentina’s ability to exploit overlaps. With replacements adding fresh energy, the Boks’ tempo only increased as the match wore on, turning a close contest into a rout. The fluidity of the backline, despite injuries to Kolbe, Willemse, and Ethan Hooker during the game, underlined the squad’s growing versatility. Players seamlessly shifted positions, ensuring momentum never stalled. Historical and Championship Context This was South Africa’s highest score in a Rugby Championship match since the tournament’s inception in 2012 and one of the largest margins ever recorded against Argentina. It also marked back-to-back attacking displays of more than 40 points, following the record-breaking win over New Zealand in Wellington earlier in the month. The bonus-point victory lifted the Springboks to 15 points on the log, one ahead of New Zealand with one round to go. Australia remain in third with 11, while Argentina sit at the foot of the table with nine. With the standings this tight, the final round promises drama, with South Africa aiming to clinch back-to-back Rugby Championship titles for the first time since 2009. Lasting Impressions The Durban clash was a tale of two halves: Argentina’s grit and opportunism kept them alive for 40 minutes, but South Africa’s firepower in the second half overwhelmed them. At the heart of it all was Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, whose record-breaking night will be remembered alongside other iconic individual Springbok performances. Yet beyond the headlines, the collective showed signs of a team in rhythm, set piece dominance, defensive adjustments, and attacking cohesion across starters and replacements. The Boks now carry momentum into the decisive final fixture of the campaign. Next Fixture The Rugby Championship concludes next weekend with Argentina hosting South Africa at Allianz Stadium, Twickenham, London , on Saturday, 4 October 2025 (kick-off 15:00 SA time). The encounter will decide the title, with the Springboks leading the standings by a single point. All image Credits: Springboks 🔥🏉 #TheGoToGuy #Springboks #RugbyChampionship #DurbanVictory
- Tragic Passing of a Child at Khutsong Extension 3 Reservoir
The Khutsong community has been left in shock following the tragic passing of a 2-year-old child who fell into a reservoir chamber at the Khutsong Extension 3 Reservoir. The incident occurred on the afternoon of 26 September 2025 and has drawn an immediate response from the Merafong City Local Municipality, emergency services, and law enforcement authorities. The tragedy has highlighted urgent questions about infrastructure safety, municipal accountability, and the steps needed to prevent similar incidents in the future. Image: The Go-To Guy Creations Incident and Immediate Response According to the Merafong City Local Municipality, emergency services and law enforcement officers were immediately dispatched to the scene after the incident was reported. The South African Police Service (SAPS) has since launched a formal investigation into the circumstances surrounding the child’s death. Municipal officials confirmed that they will also be conducting an internal investigation to establish how the reservoir chamber was accessible and whether safety lapses may have contributed to the tragedy. The chamber, designed to store and regulate local water supply, is typically a restricted site, raising concerns over how a child could have entered the area. Municipal Statement and Condolences In an official media release, the municipality expressed its “profound shock and sadness” at the news. Deep condolences were extended to the bereaved family, friends, and the wider Khutsong community. The municipality emphasised its commitment to standing with the family during what was described as an “unimaginably difficult time.” The spokesperson further appealed to the public and media to respect the privacy of the family , highlighting the sensitive nature of the loss and the need to allow them space to grieve. Safety and Accountability Measures Beyond its condolences, the municipality placed strong emphasis on accountability and prevention . It acknowledged the heartbreak experienced by the family and the community at large, but also noted the responsibility to ensure such tragedies do not occur again. As part of its response plan, the municipality committed to: Reviewing safety protocols at all municipal water infrastructure facilities. Strengthening access controls to ensure unauthorised entry is prevented. Implementing additional security measures where vulnerabilities are identified. Updating the community as investigations progress. Officials underscored that the safety of residents, especially children, remains the municipality’s highest priority. The goal, according to the statement, is not only to hold those accountable where necessary but also to create lasting safeguards for community protection. Broader Community Impact The tragedy has sparked widespread grief in Khutsong, a community already grappling with challenges related to infrastructure and service delivery. For many residents, the incident has raised broader concerns about the condition and oversight of municipal facilities. Community members expressed both sorrow and frustration, noting that while accidents can happen, stronger preventative measures should have been in place. Calls for improved fencing, signage, and monitoring of public utilities are expected to feature prominently in follow-up discussions with municipal authorities. For parents and caregivers in Khutsong, the event has served as a painful reminder of the importance of vigilance around children, especially in areas where municipal infrastructure intersects with residential neighborhoods. Law Enforcement Investigation The SAPS investigation will play a central role in determining whether negligence or other factors contributed to the incident. Investigators are tasked with reconstructing the timeline of events, assessing the safety measures present at the site, and establishing whether further accountability measures are required. The outcome of this investigation, combined with the municipality’s internal review, is expected to provide clarity on how the chamber came to be opened and how similar tragedies can be avoided in the future. Wrap-Up The death of a 2-year-old child at the Khutsong Extension 3 Reservoir is a profound loss that has shaken the entire community. While the municipality has expressed its condolences and initiated immediate investigations, the focus now turns to ensuring accountability and preventing future incidents. As Khutsong mourns, attention will remain on the steps taken by both the municipality and law enforcement to strengthen infrastructure safety and rebuild public trust. For the grieving family, community support and privacy will be essential in the days ahead, while for residents as a whole, the tragedy has reinforced the urgent importance of protecting the most vulnerable. #TheGoToGuy #Carletonville #Khutsong #Merafong #CommunitySafety #ChildSafety #Accountability 🕊️👶🏽⚠️💔
- Kwalata Hiking, Camping, and Spring Festival Launched at Faan Meintjies
The City of Matlosana has officially introduced a new annual attraction with the launch of the Kwalata Hiking, Camping, and Spring Festival . The event, hosted on Saturday, 27 September 2025, at Faan Meintjies Nature Reserve, was organized by the Local Economic Development (LED) Directorate under the leadership of MMC Wesley Kgang. More than just a recreational outing, the festival was designed to combine outdoor adventure with community building and local economic empowerment. Image: City of Matlosana Strong Institutional Support The launch was supported by a wide range of stakeholders, highlighting the importance of collaboration in driving tourism and development. Present at the event were MMC for LED, Cllr Wesley Kgang, Director for Corporate Services Mr. Max Moabelo, representatives from the Department of Economic Development, Environment, Conservation and Tourism (DEDECT), the North West Tourism Board, the Matlosana Hiking Club, Dr. Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality, EMRS, and numerous hiking enthusiasts from across the province. This broad attendance underscored the festival’s dual focus: celebrating natural heritage while also strengthening partnerships that contribute to sustainable local growth. Image: City of Matlosana Objectives of the Festival The Kwalata Festival was created with three central objectives: Celebrating Natural Heritage By hosting the event at Faan Meintjies Nature Reserve, the organizers aimed to encourage greater appreciation of the region’s natural assets. Hiking, camping, and outdoor activities served as platforms to connect residents and visitors with the environment, highlighting the importance of conservation and eco-tourism. Promoting Healthy Lifestyles The festival emphasised the role of outdoor recreation in physical and mental well-being. Activities such as hiking not only provide exercise but also create opportunities for social interaction and stress relief, reinforcing the idea that healthy communities are central to sustainable development. Creating Economic Opportunities Tourism events are a recognised driver of local economies. The Kwalata Festival created space for local businesses, informal traders, and cultural performers to benefit from increased foot traffic and visibility. Such initiatives align with the City of Matlosana’s commitment to job creation and entrepreneurship. Keynote Insights from Leadership Delivering the keynote address, MMC Wesley Kgang highlighted the vital role of tourism in stimulating local economies. He described the festival as more than just a gathering for recreation, stressing its economic and social impact. “Tourism is one of the most powerful tools for local economic development. Events like this festival create opportunities for small businesses, open markets for local products, and showcase the talent and creativity of our people,” said Kgang. His remarks positioned the festival not as an isolated event but as part of a broader vision for sustainable economic development in Matlosana. Image: City of Matlosana Recognition of Participants One of the festival’s main attractions was the organised hikes across three distance categories: 3 km, 5 km, and 10 km. Participants of all ages took part, with medals awarded upon completion. The gesture was symbolic, recognising not only individual achievements but also the shared spirit of community involvement. The hiking activities attracted both seasoned outdoor enthusiasts and newcomers, many of whom expressed appreciation for the chance to explore local landscapes in a structured, family-friendly environment. Broader Impact on Tourism and Development The festival’s significance extends beyond a single day. By positioning Faan Meintjies Nature Reserve as a hub for recreation and community events, the City of Matlosana aims to attract visitors from across the province and beyond. This creates opportunities for the hospitality sector, small-scale traders, transport providers, and tourism-linked industries. The inclusion of institutions such as DEDECT and the North West Tourism Board also signals intent to integrate the Kwalata Festival into the province’s broader tourism calendar. This could elevate the event’s profile, ensuring that it contributes to long-term economic and social benefits for the community. Image: City of Matlosana Final Thoughts The launch of the Kwalata Hiking, Camping, and Spring Festival represents more than a recreational outing. It is a reflection of the City of Matlosana’s commitment to blending environmental appreciation, healthy lifestyles, and local economic growth into a single platform. With the active involvement of stakeholders and the enthusiastic participation of the community, the festival has laid a strong foundation for future growth. As medals were handed out to proud participants and small businesses showcased their products, the event illustrated how collaboration, tourism, and community spirit can come together to strengthen local development. Going forward, the Kwalata Festival is expected to become a hallmark of Matlosana’s cultural and economic calendar, contributing to both community pride and regional prosperity. #TheGoToGuy #Klekrsdorp #KwalataFestival #Matlosana #Tourism #CommunityDevelopment #HealthyLiving 🥾🏕️🌿🏅
