  • Ventersdorp Youth Protest and the New Mine Controversy

On 18 September 2025, the streets of Ventersdorp were filled with burning tyres, makeshift barricades, and chants from a frustrated youth. The protest was more than just a show of discontent, it was the latest chapter in a long-standing battle over governance, service delivery, and economic opportunities in this small North West town. Two issues stand at the heart of the unrest: first, the demand for Ventersdorp to separate from the JB Marks Local Municipality, an amalgamation with Potchefstroom that residents say has left their town neglected; and second, anger over the revival of a local diamond mine that, instead of uplifting unemployed youth, has allegedly hired outsiders while overlooking the local community. This report examines both dimensions, the political backdrop of the municipality dispute and the controversy surrounding the new mine, while also reflecting on the implications for the people of Ventersdorp. Background: The JB Marks Merger The JB Marks Local Municipality was created in August 2016 after the national government merged the Tlokwe City Council (Potchefstroom) with the Ventersdorp Local Municipality. Officially, the aim was to streamline governance, improve service delivery, and stabilize municipal finances under the umbrella of the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality. From day one, however, many Ventersdorp residents opposed the move. They felt it was a forced political decision that ignored local voices. Critics accused the ruling party of pushing the merger to maintain control of Potchefstroom, where opposition parties were gaining ground. Eight years later, much of the skepticism has hardened into resentment. Residents argue that rather than improving conditions, the merger left Ventersdorp worse off: Service Delivery Decline:  Water cuts, potholes, and poor waste management have become everyday frustrations. Unrealized Development:  Projects like the long-promised “N14 Development” (a mall, fuel station, and schools) vanished from the agenda after the merger. Fiscal Inequality:  While 65–75% of Potchefstroom residents pay rates, only about 15–20% of Ventersdorp households do, yet both towns must share one budget. Locals argue this leaves Ventersdorp with crumbs while Potchefstroom enjoys the lion’s share of resources. Loss of Political Voice:  Decisions affecting Ventersdorp are made in Potchefstroom, where Ventersdorp councillors are a small minority. For years, petitions and memoranda have been sent to the Municipal Demarcation Board (MDB), calling for the reversal of the amalgamation. In 2025 alone, nearly 14,000 residents signed a petition to restore Ventersdorp’s independence. But in August, the MDB announced it would not redraw the boundaries. The decision sparked fury, especially since the Board’s own technical report reportedly concluded that the 2016 merger had been “a disaster” and recommended de-amalgamation. The September 18 Youth Protest The MDB’s rejection was the spark that lit the fire. On 18 September, hundreds of Ventersdorp youth marched into the streets. They blocked the N14 highway, the main economic artery between Gauteng and the North West, with burning tyres and stones. Businesses closed, taxis halted services, and the usually quiet farming town ground to a standstill. The protesters carried placards demanding: “Ventersdorp Out of JB Marks!” “We Want Our Own Municipality!” “Jobs for Locals, Not Outsiders!” The protest highlighted two intertwined grievances: political marginalisation under JB Marks and economic exclusion from the town’s diamond mine. Community leaders submitted a memorandum of demands to JB Marks officials. Chief among them was the call to dissolve the amalgamation and re-establish Ventersdorp as an independent municipality. The local mayor’s office quickly responded by holding talks with protest representatives. While the mayor admitted he had no authority to dissolve the merger, he promised to forward the demand to the provincial government and the MDB. He also pledged to address some immediate service delivery issues. In exchange, protesters agreed to suspend their demonstrations temporarily. For now, Ventersdorp has returned to a fragile calm, but locals have warned: if promises are not kept, protests will resume. The New Mine: Promise or Betrayal? Alongside the political grievances, the revival of a local diamond mine has become a flashpoint for anger. Known historically as the Tirisano Mine, the operation lies on the outskirts of Ventersdorp near the Ga-Mogopa community. Ownership and History The mine was originally developed in the early 2000s through a partnership between the BaKwena Ba Mogopa community and Etruscan Diamonds, a Canadian-linked company. By 2010, Rockwell Diamonds had taken over with a 74% stake, investing millions into upgrading the plant. After several financial struggles and labor disputes, the mine was mothballed around 2012 and lay dormant for years. In 2025, new investors reopened the mine, promising jobs and economic revival. Employment Controversy Instead of celebration, the reopening sparked outrage. Protesters allege that: Jobs were not advertised transparently within Ventersdorp. Outsiders, both from other provinces and foreign nationals, were given priority. Local unemployed youth were sidelined, even for unskilled or entry-level positions. Given that youth unemployment in Ventersdorp is staggeringly high, these allegations feel like a betrayal. For many young people, the mine represented their one real chance at steady employment. Seeing outsiders hired has fueled resentment and reinforced feelings of exclusion. Environmental and Social Concerns The mine is also accused of: Polluting local land and water sources. Leaving open pits and environmental scars on community land. Failing to invest in social responsibility projects, such as schools, clinics, or infrastructure. Local leaders describe the situation as an “environmental disaster in the making.”  They are demanding government oversight to ensure compliance with environmental regulations and a binding commitment to community development. Community Outlook and Next Steps Ventersdorp’s grievances are both political and economic, and resolving them will require action on multiple fronts: Governance:  The call for de-amalgamation will not disappear. Even if the MDB refuses to redraw boundaries before the 2026 elections, pressure will mount on political parties to take a stand. Opposition parties already back the demerger, while the ruling party appears hesitant. Service Delivery:  Immediate improvements in roads, water, and waste collection could ease tensions. But without long-term investment, Ventersdorp residents are unlikely to feel heard. Mining Accountability:  The new mine must engage directly with the community. Locals want a formal agreement guaranteeing job quotas for Ventersdorp residents, along with environmental safeguards and social development programs. Youth Empowerment:  The protest demonstrated the energy and determination of Ventersdorp’s youth. Civic leaders are now considering forming a youth forum to negotiate directly with the mining company and municipal officials. Overall Outlook The 18 September 2025 protest in Ventersdorp was more than just a flare-up of unrest. It was the culmination of nearly a decade of grievances, from the unpopular JB Marks amalgamation to the frustrations of being left out of local economic opportunities. The revival of the town’s diamond mine, far from being a beacon of hope, has instead crystallized the community’s fears: that Ventersdorp’s resources are being extracted without its people benefiting. Combined with years of municipal neglect, this has created a combustible mix of anger and determination. For now, Ventersdorp’s youth have put down their placards and cleared the barricades. But the message is clear: if promises are broken, the streets will once again echo with their demands. Ventersdorp is no longer willing to be silent. Its people want accountability, opportunity, and above all, the right to shape their own future. #TheGoToGuy #JBMArks #VentersdorpProtest #YouthVoices #JBMarks #ServiceDelivery #LocalJobs #MiningImpact #CommunityStruggles #VentersdorpRising #NorthWestYouth #AccountabilityNow 🔥🛑✊🏾🪧🛠️💧⚡🚧💎🌍

Lightning Start in Mahikeng The NWU Eagles produced a commanding display at the Mahikeng Stadium to seal their spot in the Varsity Football semi-finals with a 3–0 victory over Wits . Backed by their home supporters, the Eagles wasted no time stamping their authority on the contest. Within just five minutes, Khumoetsile Van Schalkwyk  was perfectly placed to convert a low cross inside the penalty area, handing NWU a dream start and igniting celebrations in the stands. Image: NWU Wits, despite conceding early, remained composed and tried to settle into their rhythm. They enjoyed spells of possession but were frustrated by NWU’s compact defensive line, which gave little away. By the 30-minute mark, NWU had already registered three shots on target and looked far sharper in attack. Second Half: Eagles in Full Flight After the halftime break, NWU raised the intensity further. The midfield trio took control, winning duels and recycling possession to keep Wits pinned in their own half. Their pressure was rewarded in the 51st minute when captain Aphelele Sibisi  calmly slotted home the second goal after excellent link-up play with Van Schalkwyk. With a 2–0 cushion, the Eagles controlled proceedings, maintaining their shape while denying Wits any clear scoring chances. The visitors were restricted to speculative long-range efforts that never troubled NWU goalkeeper Ethan Mokwena. Image: NWU A Spectacular Finish The highlight of the evening came in the 89th minute. Substitute Xolani Masethi  spotted space outside the box and unleashed a thunderous long-range strike that flew past the Wits goalkeeper, sealing a comprehensive 3–0 victory and sparking jubilation among the home crowd. Image: NWU Standout Performances While the goal scorers grabbed headlines, it was defender Lucas Seromo  who earned Player of the Match  for his composure at the back and his ability to transition play into attack. • Weekly News: Carletonville & Merafong Community Round-Up

The past week has brought a mix of challenges, resilience, and inspiring stories across Carletonville, Fochville, Khutsong, and Welverdiend. From infrastructure spending questions and power outages to uplifting community initiatives and academic success stories, residents have witnessed both the struggles and strengths that shape daily life in Merafong. Here’s a round-up of the top news stories you need to know. Image: The Go-To Guy Creations Merafong Municipality Spends Over R1 Million Scraping Short Gravel Road Fochville, Concerns have been raised after it emerged that the Merafong City Local Municipality spent more than R1 million scraping a gravel road less than two kilometres long. The figure was revealed in the municipality’s mid-year financial and performance assessment report, which noted that R1,031,342 was allocated for work on the access road leading to the Kokosi Waste Water Treatment Works (WWTW). The project was funded through a Municipal Infrastructure Grant (MIG) from national government. The road, which turns off A Lembede Drive in Kokosi and runs to the WWTW, was scraped under the supervision of Kutlo Consulting Engineers (Pty) Ltd. However, the report did not name the contractor who carried out the work. Local watchdogs and residents questioned the cost, noting that the road was already in use. Fochville resident and construction industry professional Corne van der Merwe pointed out that community-funded scraping projects, such as the road to the rubbish dump, had cost only R10,610 for eight hours of work. By his estimate, the WWTW road could have been completed in a single day for under R15,000. The spending comes amid ongoing frustrations about failing infrastructure, water interruptions, and tight municipal budgets. Critics have described the price tag as a stark example of misaligned spending priorities. Armed Robbers Storm Blybank Home in Search of Stokvel Money Blybank, A resident of Boxer Street endured a terrifying ordeal when four armed men stormed into his bedroom on 2 September, demanding stokvel money. The incident occurred shortly after 8:00 PM. The victim reported that the men entered suddenly, brandishing firearms, and demanded access to stokvel funds. He told the intruders the money had already been deposited into a bank account. Frustrated, the suspects fled with valuables including four cellphones, a pair of sneakers, and car keys. The car itself was not taken. Police confirmed that a case of house robbery has been opened and investigations are ongoing. No arrests had been made at the time of publication. The incident has renewed concerns about stokvel-related robberies, which often spike toward the end of the year. Authorities are urging residents not to keep large amounts of cash at home. Residents Rally Behind Project to Revive Carletonville and Fochville CBDs Carletonville / Fochville, Local residents and business owners are uniting behind a new community-driven project aimed at reviving the Central Business Districts (CBDs) of Carletonville and Fochville. The initiative, supported by the South African Local Government Association (SALGA), encourages urban renewal efforts without replacing municipal responsibilities. Four workshops were held last week, two in Carletonville on 3 September and two in Fochville the following day. The sessions were led by Annemarie Loots, a spatial planner and urban designer contracted by SALGA. Loots emphasized that the goal is to build pride in the towns and foster collaboration between residents and government. Participants, including informal traders, building owners, and business associations, brainstormed ideas for improving cleanliness, safety, and vibrancy in the CBDs. Two further workshops are planned in both towns to consolidate community input into actionable proposals. Marais Family of Fochville Achieves Ten University Degrees Fochville, The Marais family has achieved a rare academic milestone, with the four children of Hein and the late Malinda Marais collectively earning ten university degrees. The latest addition came when Janke Marais (now Gorden) completed her MCom in International Tax at North-West University’s Potchefstroom campus. She is currently working in Potchefstroom and plans to continue her studies, aiming to eventually lecture at the university. Their father, Hein Marais, had himself earned a BA degree through UNISA, instilling a strong value for education. The family’s story has been described as an inspiring example of faith, gratitude, and perseverance. SAVF Fochville to Host Community Fun Day Fochville, The South African Women’s Federation (SAVF) in Fochville is preparing for a large-scale community fun day on 27 September, with activities planned for all ages. The event will be held at the grounds of Fochville We Run, behind the Gert van Rensburg Stadium. Activities begin with a fun run at 07:00, followed by exhibitions and stalls from 09:00. Highlights will include food stalls, a variety of exhibits, and vintage car and motorcycle displays. Proceeds from the event will go toward supporting SAVF’s welfare projects in the community. Residents interested in hosting a stall or learning more about the event can contact Irene Meyer at 076 255 9423. Mother and Child Traumatized in Early-Morning Home Robbery East Driefontein, A 37-year-old mother and her child endured a frightening ordeal in the early hours of 2 September when an intruder broke into their rondavel and demanded money. Police said the suspect gained entry around 05:00 after the woman’s husband had left for work. A key left in the burglar gate reportedly allowed the intruder to unlock the door with ease. The man threatened the victims, demanding cash, before fleeing with money and a cellphone. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. Police confirmed that a house robbery case has been opened and investigations are underway. Residents have been urged to take extra precautions, including removing keys from gates and doors, particularly during the night and early morning hours. Carletonville Police Meet Khutsong Ext 5 Residents to Tackle Crime Khutsong Ext 5, Carletonville police hosted a community meeting at the local library on 3 September, engaging residents in crime prevention discussions. The session formed part of the police’s social crime prevention programme , led by Sergeant Thabo Mathebula, with support from Lieutenant-Colonel Mzana, Constable Nabo Modise, CPF patrollers, street committees, and ward councillor Ali Motsumi. Discussions centered on local crime patterns, with residents urged to report suspicious activity promptly. Police also encouraged the recruitment of additional patrollers and cautioned landlords to verify tenant identities to prevent criminals from operating under false names. Attendees were reminded of the following reporting channels: Carletonville SAPS: 018 787 9316 Relief Commander: 071 675 7200 MySAPS App (free download) Anonymous SMS line: 32211 Police emphasised that community vigilance is key to reducing crime in the area. Surge in Car Theft as Foreign-Plated Vehicles Targeted Carletonville, Police have warned of a surge in vehicle thefts targeting cars with foreign number plates, particularly Toyotas, after five vehicles were stolen in the past week. Acting Station Commander Lieutenant Colonel Wessel Prinsloo said a syndicate is suspected of operating in the area, with cars bearing Lesotho and Mozambique plates especially vulnerable. Because these vehicles are not registered on South Africa’s NaTIS database, they are harder to trace once stolen. Most thefts occurred at local mines, where cars were parked for extended periods. Police urged all vehicle owners, and especially those with foreign plates, to take precautions such as installing tracking systems, avoiding long periods of unattended parking, and reporting suspicious activity near vehicles. Increased patrols are being conducted, and police are working with neighbouring jurisdictions to investigate the syndicate. Frustration Grows as Welverdiend Faces Another Prolonged Power Outage Welverdiend, Residents are once again grappling with a prolonged blackout, just a month after enduring a month-long power cut. The latest outage began on 10 September, when scheduled maintenance was conducted at the Frikkie van der Merwe substation. Although electricity was briefly restored, it cut out again within half an hour and had not returned by Tuesday. Affected areas include Welverdiend, Elijah Barayi, and Khutsong Extensions 4, 5, and 8. Some families have resorted to giving away food before it spoils. Meanwhile, many residents expressed anger at the municipality’s silence, saying they were left to rely on word of mouth and direct observation at the substation for updates. With no clear timeline for restoration, frustration is mounting, and trust in local authorities continues to erode. Wrap-Up This week’s developments in Carletonville and surrounding areas reflect the many layers of life in Merafong: persistent service delivery struggles, rising crime concerns, and the power of community resilience. While residents grapple with challenges like power cuts, robberies, and questionable spending, they also continue to inspire through academic achievement, civic engagement, and projects to uplift their towns. The stories highlight both the difficulties and determination of a community working hard to protect, improve, and take pride in its future. #TheGoToGuy #Carletonville #Merafong #Fochville #Welverdiend #Khutsong #CommunityUpdate #LocalNews #ServiceDelivery #SafetyMatters ✨🚨📚🏘️💡
