  • Why Freshness Matters: What Happens When You Bake Daily

🥖 🥖 🥖 🥖 🥖 🥖 🥖 🥖 There’s nothing quite like the smell of freshly baked bread, warm, toasty, and full of flavour. At artisan bakeries like Bakehouse, baking fresh every day isn’t just tradition, it’s key to delivering better taste, texture, and quality in every loaf. Image: The Go-to Guy Creations Taste & Aroma Fresh bread bursts with flavour thanks to slow fermentation and quality ingredients. It doesn’t need added sugars or flavour enhancers, the dough’s natural process does the work. Plus, the smell of just-baked bread is irresistible (and something mass-produced supermarket loaves can’t match). Texture That’s Just Right Daily-baked bread gives you the best of both worlds, a crunchy crust on the outside and a soft, airy inside. Unlike pre-packaged bread that’s overly soft or rubbery, fresh bread has a satisfying chew and structure that holds up under butter, cheese, or toppings. Cleaner Ingredients Fresh artisan loaves are usually made with simple ingredients: flour, water, salt, and yeast. That’s it. No preservatives, no dough conditioners, no chemical names you can’t pronounce, just honest bread made the old-fashioned way. Shelf Life That Makes Sense Yes, fresh bread doesn’t last forever, and that’s a good  thing. It means there are no artificial preservatives keeping it soft for weeks. If you don’t eat it all in two days, simply slice and freeze it. You’ll still enjoy great flavour without the additives. The Bottom Line Freshly baked bread, made daily, is better for your taste buds, your health, and your peace of mind. It’s real food, wholesome, delicious, and made with care. Once you’ve had a true bakery loaf, you’ll never go back to plastic-wrapped bread again. About Bakehouse – Potchefstroom Bakehouse is a proudly local artisan bakery in Potchefstroom, known for its dedication to fresh, daily-baked goods made with care and craftsmanship. From hearty sourdough loaves and flaky croissants to custom cakes and seasonal treats, every product is prepared using honest ingredients and traditional techniques. Whether you're grabbing your morning roll, ordering a celebration cake, or just craving something freshly made, Bakehouse delivers that authentic, just-out-the-oven experience every time. 🥖 🥖 🥖 🥖 🥖 🥖 🥖 🥖 #DailyBaked #FreshIsBest #BakehousePotch #ArtisanBread #RealBread #FreshFromTheOven #BreadLovers #CrustAndCrumb #NoPreservatives

  • TRACTOR Awareness Rally: A Journey of Unity Across the Northern and Western Cape

The TRACTOR Awareness Rally (Together Rallying Across Communities To Overcome Remembrance-loss) continues to weave its message of awareness, dignity, and unity across South Africa. From Carnarvon to Robertson, the symbolic tractor has become more than a vehicle, it has become a beacon of resilience, carrying with it the voices of caregivers, the support of communities, and the compassion of those determined to make a difference. Image: NWU Faculty of Health Sciences Day Seven: From Carnarvon to Williston On Friday, 5 September, the rally journeyed from Carnarvon to Williston. The day was marked by teamwork and a shared commitment to safety, with special thanks extended to Mr. Solly from IRCA, who ensured that the road was safe for all participants. The organisers emphasised that the rally is not just about distance covered but about the collective spirit of communities. By travelling together in solidarity, participants demonstrated how awareness of dementia and Alzheimer’s is strengthened when safety, cooperation, and care form the foundation of the journey. Day Eight: Reaching Calvinia, the Last Stop in the Northern Cape Saturday, 6 September, saw the rally travel from Williston to Calvinia, the final Northern Cape stop on the route. Calvinia welcomed the rally with open arms, providing a day of heartfelt engagement. Community members gathered to share stories, listen to caregivers, and honour those living with memory loss. The support of local businesses such as OK Food Calvinia and the dedicated SCI stakeholder engagement team added to the success of the stop, securing a voucher for the rally team. The day closed with a powerful reminder: true community engagement begins with listening. Even when memories fade, dignity and love remain. Image: NWU Faculty of Health Sciences Day Nine: Calvinia to Van Rhynsdorp On Sunday, 7 September, the tractor carried its message further, travelling from Calvinia to Van Rhynsdorp. Before leaving Calvinia, participants were deeply moved by the words of Prof. Thabisile Mpofana from NWU, who spent valuable time with elders and caregivers in old age homes. Her focus on listening, encouraging, and sharing knowledge left a lasting impression on all involved. The arrival in Van Rhynsdorp continued this theme. Werno, a member of the medical team, highlighted the importance of “listening with sharp ears”, an act of gathering stories, offering support, and ensuring that those living with dementia are seen and valued. These encounters deepened the campaign’s focus on remembrance and empathy. Day Ten: From Van Rhynsdorp to Citrusdal On Monday, 8 September, the team travelled from Van Rhynsdorp to Citrusdal. The day’s reflections reinforced the rally’s ethos: awareness alone can spark change, but true impact is found in listening. Visits to local care homes provided further opportunities to honour the resilience of families and caregivers. Each conversation underscored that the rally is not merely symbolic, it is a practical and emotional lifeline for many navigating the challenges of dementia. Day Eleven: Citrusdal to Tulbagh Tuesday, 9 September, brought the rally to Tulbagh. Accompanied by Prof. Carlien from NWU, the team reflected on the journey so far, the kilometres travelled, the communities met, and the resilience encountered along the way. Prof. Carlien noted that this journey has become a collection of voices, each shaping the way forward. Her reflections highlighted how the rally’s mission goes beyond raising awareness; it is about building networks of compassion and ensuring that the dignity of those with memory loss is never forgotten. “Even when they forget us, we will remember them,”  became the phrase that guided the day’s engagements. Day Twelve: Tulbagh to Robertson On Wednesday, 10 September, the rally continued from Tulbagh to Robertson. The visit to Tulbagh the previous day left an indelible mark, with meaningful stops at the Community Hall, the Kerke church, and the local old age home. Here, caregivers and elders shared their stories in an environment filled with respect and empathy. As always, the team listened, because listening remains the heart of the campaign. Moving into Robertson, the tractor carried with it not only symbolic momentum but also the real stories of resilience, love, and unity collected along the way. Facebook Video Link: https://www.facebook.com/100063630157127/videos/pcb.1336410968489896/1502193324154588 A Journey Beyond Roads From Carnarvon to Robertson, the TRACTOR Awareness Rally has demonstrated that awareness is only the beginning. True change comes when communities work together, when safety is prioritised, and when caregivers are given the space to share their burdens and receive support. As the tractor continues its southward path, it serves as a rolling reminder: while memories may fade, dignity, care, and love must remain steadfast. The journey is more than kilometres on a map, it is a living testament to South Africa’s ability to unite for a cause that touches countless families. #TheGoToGuy #potchefstroom #TRACTORforMemory #DementiaAwareness #AlzheimersSupport #CommunityForCare #JourneyOfHope

This one-off extension is aimed at helping residents who may struggle to visit the office during usual weekday hours. Context & Significance Extended service hours  have become part of the Department’s broader efforts to improve accessibility. In May 2025, Home Affairs implemented extended hours across select offices to support the rollout of Smart ID Cards, especially for naturalised citizens and permanent residents who were transitioning from older ID books. These Saturday services helped reduce congestion and streamline service delivery. Home Affairs has also offered weekday hour extensions  during school holidays, providing more flexibility for students applying for or collecting essential documents such as IDs and passports. What This Means for Local Residents Where & When: Venue:  Klerksdorp Large Office (as shown in the image) Service available:  Collection of Smart ID cards and passports only Date & Time:  Saturday, 13 September 2025, from 08:00 to 13:00 Access Benefits:  This extension provides a valuable opportunity for those unable to visit during the week, accommodating busy work schedules, students, elderly residents, or caregivers. Booking vs Walk-ins:  While Home Affairs encourages use of its Branch Appointment Booking System (BABS)  ahead of visits, they also accept walk-ins when possible, though appointments may lead to faster processing. Why It Matters Reducing Queues & Congestion:  These extended hours help ease long lines and wait times, just as prior weekend and holiday extensions have demonstrated. Inclusive Access:  By offering alternate times, Home Affairs ensures that essential documentation services are more inclusive, reaching a broader portion of the population. Temporary, Targeted Support:  While not a permanent change, the announcement aligns with a broader pattern of flexible scheduling that Home Affairs has introduced at key times to enhance customer service and responsiveness. • Keeping Long-Haired Pets Cool and Comfortable This Spring in Potchefstroom

Spring in Potchefstroom brings sunny days and rising temperatures, with average highs climbing from around 21°C in September to 28°C by November . For long-haired cats and dogs, this warming weather can pose comfort challenges. Image : Facebook Esmi's Pet Grooming Thick fur that was a cozy asset in winter may now cause overheating if not properly maintained. That’s why regular grooming is so important in spring: it helps pets stay cool, comfortable, and healthy as the seasons change. Why Spring Grooming Matters for Long-Haired Pets As the days get warmer, long-haired pets begin shedding their dense winter coats. Many breeds go through a heavy “coat blow” in spring, shedding clumps of undercoat fur . Without grooming, this excess fur often ends up as tangles and mats in the coat (or all over your home!). Matting isn’t just a cosmetic issue. Matted fur can trap heat and moisture close to a pet’s skin, making it harder for them to cool off and potentially leading to heat discomfort . Pets with thick, untrimmed coats are especially vulnerable to overheating, as their fur traps heat and prevents proper air circulation . In severe cases, mats that stay damp or dirty can even cause hot spots, skin rashes, or infections on a pet’s skin . Regular spring grooming sessions help avoid these problems by: Removing loose fur:   Brushing and de-shedding treatments get rid of the fluffy undercoat that long-haired pets shed in spring. This prevents that loose fur from forming mats or causing excessive shedding around the house . Preventing mats and tangles:   Routine brushing and combing (especially for breeds like Persians or Collies) keeps the coat free of knots. This not only looks neater but also ensures air can circulate through the fur to cool the pet’s skin . Smooth, mat-free fur helps a dog or cat regulate body temperature better. Reducing overheating risks:   By thinning out a heavy coat with proper trimming or de-shedding, grooming relieves pets of excess insulation. Long-haired pets that are well-groomed can enjoy spring weather without the burden of a thick, heat-trapping coat . (Note: for double-coated breeds, professional groomers know how to thin the coat without shaving too short , preserving the coat’s protective function while still keeping pets cool.) Protecting skin health:   Clean, well-brushed fur keeps skin healthier. Mats can irritate the skin by pulling on it and can trap bacteria or fungi that lead to hot spots or infections . Regular grooming also distributes natural oils, preventing dryness and easing any springtime itch from shedding or pollen. In short, grooming in spring is about more than looks, it’s about comfort and health. A well-groomed long-haired pet is less likely to overheat, develops fewer skin issues, and generally feels better as the weather warms up. Image : The Go-To Guy Creation Grooming Services to Keep Pets Cool and Comfortable Esmi’s Pet Grooming Services offers a full range of professional grooming options to help long-haired pets beat the spring heat. These grooming services are tailored to reduce heavy coats, remove irritants, and keep pets feeling fresh: Bathing:   A thorough bath with pet-friendly shampoo cleans away dirt, dander, and loose fur. This leaves the coat lighter and the skin able to “breathe.” Bathing also washes out allergens (like spring pollen) and helps cool your pet’s body on warm days. (Rest assured, only gentle shampoos are used to avoid drying out the skin.) Coat Trimming:   For dogs and cats who need it, coat trimming or a light haircut can significantly improve comfort. Trimming excessive fur (especially around areas like the belly, hindquarters, and paws) helps prevent mats and allows cooling air flow. Professional trimming keeps the length at a safe level , not too short, since pets still need some fur for sun protection and temperature regulation . De-Shedding Treatments:   De-shedding is a special service focusing on removing the undercoat. Using tools like de-shedding brushes or combs, the groomer will extract the loose underlayer of fur that would otherwise end up shedding everywhere. Removing this undercoat fur lightens your pet’s load, reduces overheating, and dramatically cuts down on shedding at home . Nail Clipping:   Keeping nails trimmed is important year-round, and spring is no exception. Pets may be more active outdoors in the nice weather, and short nails help them walk and run comfortably. Regular nail clipping prevents overgrown nails that can cause pain or affect a pet’s posture . It also reduces the chance of nails splitting or getting snagged during play. Ear Cleaning:   Spring can bring higher humidity and more frequent outdoor romps, which means a higher chance of dirt or moisture in the ears. Professional ear cleaning removes wax build-up and any debris, helping to prevent ear infections and keep your pet’s ears healthy and odor-free . This is especially important for breeds with floppy ears or lots of ear fur. Each of these services contributes to your pet’s overall comfort. A clean, trimmed, de-shed coat means a cooler, happier pet; neatly clipped nails and clean ears mean they feel good from head to toe. Esmi ensures every grooming session is thorough, addressing all these aspects of care so that your long-haired companion is ready to enjoy spring. Image : The Go-To Guy Creations Spring Pet Care Tips for Potchefstroom Pet Owners Grooming goes hand-in-hand with good general pet care, especially as we enter spring in Potchefstroom. Here are some friendly tips  to keep cats and dogs healthy and comfortable this season: Hydration is key:   Warmer days mean pets will pant more and need extra water to stay hydrated. Make sure fresh, cool drinking water is available at all times, both indoors and outdoors . Check bowls regularly and refill them often. You might even drop a few ice cubes in the water on especially hot days for a fun, cooling treat. Avoid the midday heat:   Try to schedule walks or playtime in the early morning or late afternoon when spring temperatures are milder. The midday sun in Potchefstroom can be strong; keeping pets out of direct midday sun helps prevent overheating and paw burns on hot surfaces . Provide a cool, shady spot at home where pets can lounge during peak sun hours. Regular brushing at home:   In between professional grooming appointments, frequent brushing at home will help manage shedding and prevent new mats from forming. Aim to brush long-haired dogs and cats a few times a week (or even daily during heavy shed periods). Use a slicker brush or comb to gently remove loose fur and untangle any small knots . Not only will this keep your pet’s coat in better shape, but it’s also a nice bonding time. Watch out for fleas and ticks:   Spring marks the return of pesky parasites like ticks and fleas in many areas. Grooming appointments are a good opportunity to check for any signs of fleas or ticks hiding in thick fur. At home, use a flea comb or just keep an eye on your pet’s skin while brushing. Consider preventative treatments as recommended by your vet, so your pet doesn’t suffer bites or irritation. Ensure a comfortable environment:   Long-haired pets can overheat indoors if the environment is too warm. As temperatures rise, help them stay cool by running a fan or air conditioning during heat waves, or laying out a cool damp towel for them to lie on. Cats especially appreciate cool tiled floors or shaded corners when it’s warm. By keeping your home pet-friendly and cool, you complement the benefits of grooming in keeping your furry friend comfortable. She received an unexpected casting call earlier this year inviting her to portray the energetic character of Mandy after having auditioned for the telenovela multiple times without success. Embracing the chance, she is now thoroughly enjoying bringing the role to life. In fact, her family has become avid Diepe Waters  viewers to follow her appearances on screen ( northwestnewspapers.co.za ) , reflecting a shared excitement in her success. This television breakthrough follows Chatwind’s earlier introduction to acting on a larger platform. In 2022, while still a teenager, she made her first on-screen appearance with a small part in the Netflix series Ludik . However, landing a character in a nationally broadcast telenovela is a far more prominent achievement, giving the young actress widespread exposure. Diepe Waters  is a widely watched Afrikaans drama on the kykNET network ( northwestnewspapers.co.za ) , so Chatwind’s new role places her in front of audiences across the country - an accomplishment that could open doors to future roles and opportunities in the entertainment industry. Balancing Academics and Acting Despite her television commitments, Chatwind has remained dedicated to her education. She is currently a second-year pharmacy student at North-West University (NWU), excelling in a rigorous academic program even as she pursues her acting ambitions. Her scholastic achievements have earned her membership in the prestigious Golden Key International Honour Society, an honor given for exceptional academic performance. She also serves as a class representative for her cohort of second-year students ( northwestnewspapers.co.za ) , demonstrating leadership and commitment in her university community. Juggling a demanding university course and an acting role on television requires discipline and effective time management. The Diepe Waters  production is filmed in Johannesburg, which means Chatwind must coordinate travel for shoots alongside her class schedule. Her ability to balance both responsibilities highlights a strong work ethic and passion; managing to excel in her studies while seizing a rare opportunity in the performing arts. Family Support and Local Pride Chatwind’s accomplishments have become a source of pride for her family and the wider Klerksdorp community. Her parents, Oskin and Angelique, are reportedly bursting with pride at their eldest child’s success. The family’s support has been steadfast; her younger brother, Oskin Jr., still in primary school, is said to be his sister’s biggest admirer and now never misses an episode of her show. Chatwind is also an alumna of Klerksdorp High School, underscoring that her roots are firmly in the local area ( northwestnewspapers.co.za ) . Her journey from local student to national TV screens has been celebrated by those who have watched her grow. Inspiring Young Local Talent The significance of Chatwind’s achievement extends beyond her personal success. As a young performer from a smaller city stepping into a national spotlight, she sends a powerful message to other aspiring actors and students in the region. Her story demonstrates that with talent, persistence, and community support, even individuals far from the traditional entertainment hubs can make their mark on a big stage. This milestone for a Klerksdorp student is inspiring many in the area, encouraging the next generation of local talent to pursue their dreams, whether in the arts, academics, or any field where they can shine.

  • Springtime Gardening in Potchefstroom: A Community Guide

Spring has sprung in Potchefstroom, and Ikageng’s gardens are coming alive! After a long, dry winter, our community is eager to get back into the soil and welcome the season of renewal. Spring in Potchefstroom brings warm sunny days and gradually rising temperatures , creating ideal conditions for plants to thrive. Image : Facebook BUCO Potchefstroom It’s a time when local yards burst with new greenery as the land recovers from the winter dry spell . Gardening this time of year isn’t just a rewarding hobby, it’s also a way for the Ikageng community to beautify our neighborhood, grow healthy food, and come together outdoors. In fact, even small backyard gardens can empower families by providing fresh, nutritious produce and reducing reliance on store-bought veggies . This informative guide will walk you through the benefits of spring gardening in our region, local climate considerations, handy techniques, and the must-have tools and products for a successful spring garden. Let’s dig in! Benefits of Spring Gardening in Potchefstroom Spring is the most exciting gardening season for good reason. As the weather warms up, plants that lay dormant in winter leap back to life. In Potchefstroom, early spring (September) still has some soil moisture from winter and the heat of summer hasn’t arrived yet, making it the perfect window to plant  new shrubs, trees, and flowers . Anything planted now has time to establish roots before the scorching summer days approach. With roughly 11 hours of bright sunshine per day by November , gardens get ample light to fuel growth. There’s also an explosion of color and fragrance that comes with spring. Bulbs like daffodils and tulips, if planted in winter, start blooming. You can sow or transplant warm-season vegetables and herbs now - think spinach, carrots, tomatoes, pumpkins or chili peppers to enjoy a bountiful harvest by summer . Prefer flowers? Marigolds, petunias, sunflowers, and geraniums are great spring choices that thrive in our Highveld climate . Beyond the visual appeal, gardening in spring offers personal and community benefits: it’s therapeutic for the soul, provides mild exercise, and when neighbors share gardening tips or swap plant cuttings, it strengthens our community bonds. In short, spring gardening lifts spirits and brightens our entire Ikageng area with new life. Image : Facebook BUCO Potchefstroom Potchefstroom’s Climate and Common Gardening Challenges Before you start planting, it helps to understand Potchefstroom’s local climate and how it affects gardening. Our region has a semi-arid Highveld climate with summer rainfall and very dry winters . By early spring, the soil is often parched from months of virtually no rain (July and August average only a few millimeters of precipitation). This means water is a top concern for spring gardeners, you’ll need to water new plants to make up for the lack of rain until the summer storms arrive. Daytime temperatures in spring climb pleasantly (usually into the 20s °C), but nights can still be cool in September. Fortunately, heavy frost is uncommon by spring; the hardest frosts are usually behind us by late July, so tender seedlings are much safer to plant now . Some common gardening challenges here include rapid evaporation and dry soils, temperature swings, and the resurgence of weeds and pests. The spring sun and occasional gusty winds can dry out topsoil quickly, stressing young plants. Using mulch (like bark chips or straw) around your plant beds is a great way to lock in moisture and insulate the soil. Also be mindful that weeds wake up in spring too, after the first rains or waterings, you might see unwelcome sprouts. It’s important to pull out weeds early and regularly so they don’t outcompete your plants . As for pests, keep an eye out for aphids and other insects that love tender new growth on roses, veggies, and ornamentals. If you spot them, tackle the problem early with natural remedies (like soapy water or chili-garlic spray) or ask your local nursery for an eco-friendly treatment. With awareness of these challenges, you can pre-empt many issues: water wisely, enrich your soil, and stay vigilant against weeds and pests. Practical Spring Gardening Tips and Techniques Start with a clean-up and soil prep.   Clear away any leftover dry leaves, winter debris, and dead plant matter from your garden beds. Late winter is also when many plants are pruned, but if you haven’t done so, trim back any dead branches or frost-damaged parts now that you’re seeing new buds. Once your garden area is tidy, focus on the soil: l oosen and aerate the soil in your beds by turning it with a spade or garden fork. Incorporate plenty of organic matter like compost while turning the soil , this improves fertility and helps sandy or dry soil retain water for the root zone . Well-prepped soil will give seedlings and transplants a great head start. Plan your planting . To set yourself up for success. It’s tempting to buy every pretty plant you see, but choose varieties that suit Potchefstroom’s climate and your garden’s conditions (sun or shade, etc.). For flowers, you can plant hardy spring annuals (marigolds, petunias, zinnias) for quick color, or perennials adapted to our region for long-term landscaping. For veggies, now’s the time to plant favorites like tomatoes, green beans, maize, pumpkins, spinach and more , our spring weather will nurture them so you can enjoy summer produce . Remember to space plants appropriately so they don’t overcrowd each other as they grow. If you started seed trays indoors during late winter, begin hardening off those seedlings by placing them outside for a few hours a day before transplanting, so they adjust to the outdoor conditions gradually. Water smartly and consistently. Given the spring dry spells, watering is critical. Deeply water your garden beds after planting and establish a regular schedule to keep the soil evenly moist (but not waterlogged). Early mornings or late afternoons are the best times to water, as less moisture will evaporate under the midday sun. As temperatures rise in spring, you may need to increase watering frequency, but always monitor the soil; if spring rains come, you can adjust accordingly . The goal is to keep new growth well-hydrated without drowning the roots . Consider setting up a sprinkler or drip irrigation on a timer to make watering easier and more efficient. Also, use mulch around plants to conserve moisture and suppress those pesky weeds. After watering or rain, mulch keeps the ground damp longer, meaning you won’t have to water as often. Feed and nurture your garden.   Spring is a hungry season for plants, as they grow rapidly, they appreciate some nourishment. About 2–3 weeks after planting, give your lawn and garden a boost with fertilizer or well-rotted manure/compost tea to provide nutrients for that burst of spring growth . Many gardeners use a balanced fertilizer in early spring (for instance, 3:1:5 or a similar NPK ratio) to promote green leaves and strong roots once the risk of frost is over . Organic options like compost or pelletized chicken manure are gentle and improve soil structure as well. For flowering plants, a fertilizer higher in phosphorus can encourage more blooms. Always follow product instructions to avoid overfeeding. Lastly, keep an eye on your garden’s progress. Spring is a dynamic time - plants will shoot up quickly, and some might need staking or support (tomato cages, trellises for beans) as they grow. By tending regularly, weeding, checking for insects, pruning spent blooms , you’ll guide your spring garden to flourish into a summer oasis. Image : Facebook BUCO Potchefstroom Essential Tools and Supplies for Spring Gardening A “Spring Starter Pack” of essential gardening items from hoses and spades to gloves and sprinklers ,will prepare you for the season. Equipping yourself with the right tools not only makes the work easier, but also more enjoyable and effective. Here are some must-have tools and products for any Potchefstroom spring gardener: Garden Spade and Fork:   These are your basic earth-moving tools. A sturdy spade is perfect for digging holes, edging, and turning soil, while a garden fork helps break up compacted soil and incorporate compost. Together, they make soil preparation a breeze, essential for planting new beds or turning over vegetable patches. With quality spades and forks (plus other tools like rakes or trowels), you can prepare soil, trim and tidy plants, and tackle yardwork with ease . Look for tools with solid metal heads and comfortable handles so they last for many seasons. Gardening Gloves:   Never underestimate a good pair of gloves. Spring gardening often involves thorny rose bushes, splintery stakes, or simply lots of digging in the dirt. Gloves protect your hands from cuts, blisters, and dirt under the fingernails, making your work more comfortable. They’re especially handy when pulling prickly weeds or spreading compost. Choose durable gloves that fit well , a pair with a rubberized grip can help you handle tools and plants securely even when the soil is damp. Keeping your hands safe means you can garden longer and with less risk of injury. Hose Pipe and Sprinklers:   Since watering is so crucial in our climate, invest in a quality garden hose and a sprinkler or spray nozzle attachment. A reliable hosepipe will deliver water without leaks or bursts , saving water and frustration. Coupled with a sprinkler, you can irrigate your lawn or flowerbeds evenly, which is great during those warm spring weeks with little rain. Many local gardeners set up a sprinkler on the lawn in early morning a few days a week to keep the grass green. For garden beds, consider a soaker hose or drip irrigation for slow, deep watering that wastes less water in evaporation. Don’t forget hose fittings and an outdoor tap connector if needed (water pressure is only helpful if your connections don’t leak!). By having the right watering tools on hand, you’ll ensure your garden stays lush through the spring heat . Compost (and Other Soil Boosters):   Black gold for your garden! Compost is decomposed organic matter that enriches soil with nutrients and beneficial microbes. Adding compost to your garden beds in spring improves soil structure and fertility, setting the stage for vigorous plant growth. It’s especially helpful in Potchefstroom’s sandy or depleted soils , mixing in compost helps the soil retain moisture and nutrients longer , so your plants won’t dry out as quickly between waterings. You can buy bags of quality compost or make your own from kitchen scraps and garden waste. In addition, consider other soil amendments your spring garden might need: for example, well-rotted manure, bone meal (for phosphorus), or balanced fertilizers for an extra nutrient kick. Healthy soil is the foundation of a thriving garden, and compost is key to achieving that. All the tools and supplies above will set you up for success. Having a dependable spade, fork, hose, etc., means you’re ready to handle any spring gardening task , from planting seedlings to watering the lawn. For beginners, it might seem like a lot of equipment, but each item plays an important role. And once you have them, these tools will serve you for years as you continue growing your gardening skills. • Ward 31 Residents Engage Eskom and JB Marks in Service Delivery Meeting

As part of the Thunsha Lerole Accelerated Service Delivery Programme , residents of Ward 31 in Goudgevonden  gathered on Monday, 8 September, for a critical engagement session with representatives from Eskom  and the JB Marks Local Municipality . The meeting, chaired by Councillor Musa Leon Mkhabela, provided a platform for residents to voice concerns, seek clarification, and understand the processes behind electricity service delivery. The session tackled several pressing challenges, ranging from faulty infrastructure to affordability concerns, reflecting the community’s ongoing struggles with access to reliable power supply. Image: JB Marks Replacing Old Meter Boxes Many households in Ward 31 still rely on outdated meter boxes that frequently malfunction. These boxes not only cause billing irregularities but also create safety hazards. Eskom representatives explained the process of applying for replacements, which involves: Logging a fault or replacement request via official Eskom channels. Verification and scheduling by Eskom technical teams. Replacement and testing to ensure compliance with safety and efficiency standards. Updating the infrastructure is seen as a key step in stabilising household electricity usage and reducing unnecessary outages. Overcharging by Electricity Vendors Residents raised concerns over the mark-up prices  charged by some local electricity vendors. While prepaid electricity should follow a regulated pricing structure, instances of inflated costs were reported. The meeting highlighted the importance of: Buying electricity from authorised vendors only . Reporting suspected overcharging directly to Eskom. Monitoring receipts and tokens to confirm alignment with official tariffs. This issue underscored the need for stricter oversight and greater awareness among residents about where and how to purchase prepaid electricity safely. Image: JB Marks Turnaround Strategy for Reported Faults Community frustration often stems from the time it takes Eskom to respond  to reported faults such as power outages or equipment failures. Eskom outlined steps being taken to improve response times, including: Increasing technical teams assigned to high-demand areas. Implementing digital fault-tracking systems for better monitoring. Prioritising critical cases like hospitals, schools, and large residential clusters. The turnaround strategy aims to cut waiting times and ensure faults are not left unresolved for extended periods. Replacement of Burnt Transformers and Stolen Cables Another recurring problem is infrastructure vandalism, particularly the theft of copper cables and damage to transformers. Burnt transformers, often caused by overloads or faults, can leave entire sections of a ward without power. The municipality and Eskom explained that replacing this infrastructure involves significant costs and procurement delays. However, measures such as community policing, security patrols, and quicker reporting are being encouraged to reduce the risks and speed up replacement timelines. Image: JB Marks Indigent Support Application Process For residents struggling to afford electricity, indigent support  is a lifeline. The meeting clarified the application process, which typically includes: Submitting proof of income or unemployment at the municipal offices. Verification of household circumstances. Approval and inclusion in the indigent register. Access to subsidised or free basic electricity units each month. The programme is designed to ensure vulnerable households are not left in complete darkness due to financial constraints. Building Accountability Through Dialogue The Ward 31 meeting demonstrated the value of direct community engagement. By providing clarity on processes and challenges, Eskom and JB Marks Local Municipality gave residents an opportunity to not only raise frustrations but also learn practical steps for navigating service delivery systems. While the issues remain complex, the session marked a step toward greater accountability, transparency, and collaboration in addressing Goudgevonden’s electricity needs. ⚡ 🏘️ 🤝 💡 📢 #TheGoToGuy #JBMarks #ThunshaLerole #Ward31Community #ServiceDeliveryMatters #PowerForAll #AccountabilityInAction

  • Service Delivery in Motion: Matlosana Roadworks and UNISA Community Support

Service delivery took shape both on the roads and in the community’s educational support spaces. From fixing potholes in Meiringspark to offering vital student services at the Klerksdorp Library, municipal and institutional efforts highlighted ongoing initiatives aimed at improving daily life for residents. Image: City of Matlosana Road Maintenance in Meiringspark The City of Matlosana’s Roads Department continued with routine maintenance operations, focusing on pothole patching along Neeltjie Street in Meiringspark . This work followed the successful repair of street lights in the same area just days earlier, marking coordinated efforts to improve both road safety and public lighting. Image: City of Matlosana The maintenance forms part of a broader service delivery program directed by the Executive Mayor and Council, which aims to accelerate infrastructure improvements across the municipality. Visible upgrades such as road patching and lighting repairs directly address long-standing concerns raised by residents about road conditions and safety. UNISA Services in Klerksdorp The University of South Africa (UNISA)  brought essential services closer to the community with an outreach program hosted at the Klerksdorp Library . Prospective students and community members were able to access direct support across a range of areas: Online Applications and Registration:  Assistance with submitting applications and registering for courses. Student Counselling:  Guidance on career planning, academic pathways, and course selection. Technology Support:  Help with activating MyUnisa and MyLife accounts, ensuring students can fully access online resources. Image: City of Matlosana The event drew a significant turnout, with young people filling the library space to seek advice and practical assistance. This initiative reflected UNISA’s continued commitment to accessibility in higher education and support for students navigating the registration process. Building Community Through Action Both initiatives, municipal road maintenance and UNISA’s student services, underscore a broader theme of service and accessibility in Matlosana. While infrastructure upgrades improve the city’s physical environment, educational outreach provides residents with the tools to build brighter futures. Together, these actions demonstrate the value of visible progress and institutional presence, offering both immediate relief for current challenges and long-term opportunities for growth. 🚧 🛣️ 🎓 #TheGoToGuy #MatlosanaServiceDelivery #RoadRepairs #UNISASupport #Klerksdorp
