  • Empowering Youth Through Skills and Sustainability: G20 Exhibition and Dialogue at Taung and Jouberton

August 2025 proved to be a month of growth and inspiration for two TVET campuses in the North West province. The G20 Exhibition and Dialogue  first arrived at Jouberton Campus on 21–22 August , before concluding at Taung Campus on 29 August . These events united students, lecturers, and stakeholders in an exchange of ideas centered on solidarity, equality, and sustainability. Image: TVET Far more than academic gatherings, the exhibitions and dialogues provided platforms to explore global skills trends, the demands of the future workplace, and the vital role of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in preparing young leaders to take their place in society. Purpose of the Initiative The G20 Exhibition and Dialogue was designed to connect education with global realities. Organizers emphasized that preparing young people for the future requires aligning local learning with international developments. The events achieved this by: Exploring global skills trends  to highlight shifting demands in the economy. Encouraging innovation  and creative thinking among learners. Promoting sustainability  as a guiding principle for education and industry. Uniting stakeholders  from education, government, and the private sector to strengthen collaboration. Through this approach, students were reminded that they are not simply participants in the economy, but active leaders and changemakers  shaping the communities of tomorrow. Taung Campus: Solidarity and Equality When Taung Campus concluded its event on 29 August , the emphasis was firmly on equality and sustainable progress. Students, exhibitors, and officials reflected on how education can foster opportunities for all, particularly in underserved communities. Speakers underscored the importance of: Inclusive education models  that provide fair opportunities to every learner. Collaboration between industry and institutions  to align skills development with employment prospects. Empowering youth  to take ownership of their roles as innovators and leaders in sustainable economic growth. The Student Representative Council (SRC) played an important role in shaping the event, reminding their peers that leadership starts with participation and responsibility within the campus community itself. Image: TVET Jouberton Campus: Preparing for the Future of Work Earlier in the month, Jouberton Campus welcomed the G20 Exhibition and Dialogue on 21–22 August , with discussions heavily focused on the future of work . Global shifts in technology, sustainability, and innovation provided the backdrop for learners to consider how their education prepares them for real-world challenges. Students were encouraged to: See themselves as problem solvers and entrepreneurs , not just job seekers. Cultivate adaptability and resilience in fast-changing workplaces. Link classroom learning to practical solutions  that improve both local communities and broader economies. Practical exhibitions at Jouberton gave students a glimpse of industry expectations, bridging theory with application. The message was clear: education does not end at graduation, it evolves alongside societal needs. The Central Role of TVET Both events reinforced the vital position of the TVET sector in national and global development. By equipping young people with technical expertise, critical thinking, and social responsibility, TVET institutions are ensuring that graduates contribute meaningfully to both local and international economies. The dialogues emphasized that TVET is not only about providing skills for employment. It is about: Building stronger communities  through relevant training. Promoting global competitiveness  while addressing local needs. Encouraging leadership and civic responsibility  among young people. Image: TVET Gratitude and Impact Organisers expressed gratitude to exhibitors, officials, G20 partners, and student leaders at both campuses. Their contributions ensured that the events were more than symbolic, they became practical milestones  in empowering students for sustainable futures. The success of the G20 Exhibition and Dialogue at Taung and Jouberton highlights the power of education when it embraces equality, sustainability, and innovation. By connecting learners with global trends and industry insights, the campuses have set an example of how education can transform aspirations into action. Moving Forward with Purpose The exhibitions may have concluded in August, but their legacy is ongoing. Students left with a deeper awareness of their potential as leaders and innovators, while institutions reaffirmed their responsibility to provide inclusive and relevant education. By uniting education, industry, and global initiatives, the G20 Exhibition and Dialogue proved that today’s learners are not waiting for tomorrow to arrive, they are already shaping it. #TheGoToGuy #Klerksdorp #G20Dialogue #YouthLeadership #TVETFuture #SustainabilityInEducation #SkillsForTomorrow

  • SA Army Fittest Soldier Competition 2025, Strength, Endurance, and Unity in Action

The seventeenth edition of the South African Army Fittest Soldier Competition began this week, once again affirming its role as one of the most respected and demanding events in the country’s military calendar. Hosted by 4 Artillery Regiment with support from the South African Army Support Formation, the competition is taking place across two central venues: the 4 Artillery Regiment base and the Kopanelo Military Sports Club at Army Support Base Potchefstroom. Spearheaded this year by the South African Army’s Artillery Formation, the competition attracts soldiers from across the nation, testing not just raw physical power but also endurance, mental toughness, and adaptability to battlefield-like conditions. Each year, it grows in scale and stature, serving as both a celebration of esprit de corps and a measure of operational readiness. Image: SA National Defence Force The Inspiring Information Briefing On Sunday evening, 31 August 2025, the atmosphere at the 4 Artillery Regiment Mess was electric as participants gathered for the official information briefing. Soldiers arrived singing regimental chants, their voices echoing through the corridors and setting the tone for the week ahead. Inside the mess hall, competition officials provided the timetable and outlined critical regulations, emphasizing discipline, safety, and the rigorous standards expected of every participant. Soldiers were reminded of base protocols, do’s and don’ts at venues, and the values guiding the competition. While technical in nature, the session was infused with camaraderie, as men and women from different units bonded in anticipation of the demanding days to come. The briefing served as a reminder that the competition is not only about winning but also about showcasing the collective strength, resilience, and determination of the South African Army. Image: SA National Defence Force The Official Opening Parade The competition officially commenced on the morning of Monday, 01 September 2025, with a spirited Opening Parade at the Kopanelo Military Sports Club. Soldiers stood tall in formation as Major General J.K. Thys, acting Deputy Chief of the South African Army, presided over the ceremony on behalf of Lieutenant General L.K. Mbatha. In his address, Major General Thys underscored the essence of the competition: pushing beyond physical and mental limits while reflecting the Army’s dedication to readiness. “Today is about resilience, about pushing beyond limits to face the pain, embracing the struggle, and standing tall no matter what the obstacle,” he declared. He reminded participants that each step taken, regardless of finishing position, was a contribution to the Army’s mission and a reflection of its core values. The ceremony concluded with a stirring martial dance performance by members of 121 South African Infantry Battalion from Mtubatuba, KwaZulu-Natal. The parade was not only ceremonial but symbolic, binding participants together as they embarked on a week of intense challenges. Image: SA National Defence Force 2.4km Run: Speed Meets Determination Immediately following the parade, competitors faced their first major test: the 2.4km run, a standard measure within the South African National Defence Force Physical Training evaluation. The men’s division kicked off first, with powerful strides pounding against the track as soldiers surged forward with determination. Shortly afterward, the women’s division took to the course, demonstrating the same intensity and resilience. Image: SA National Defence Force The start was signaled by the thunderous blast of the Ordnance Quick Firing GV1 25-pounder ceremonial gun, fired by Major General Thys. As dust rose from the track, soldiers pushed themselves past exhaustion, embodying the Army’s creed of grit and endurance. Spectators cheered loudly, adding to the atmosphere of unity and motivation. The women’s race, dubbed the showcase for the “Lionesses of the Pride,” highlighted the role of female soldiers in proving that resilience knows no gender. With focus etched on their faces, they set an inspiring example for the days of competition to come. Image: SA National Defence Force Push-Ups and Sit-Ups: The Classic Test of Discipline Later in the day, competitors faced one of the Army’s most familiar but formidable tests: push-ups and sit-ups. While seemingly simple, these exercises form the backbone of military fitness training, demanding consistency, form, and discipline. In synchronized fashion, soldiers dropped to the ground, backs straight and cores braced, powering through repetitions under the watchful eyes of evaluators. For many, each rep became a battle of willpower, where gravity felt heavier with every count. Yet, the collective energy and determination carried participants through. This component highlighted not just individual strength but also the shared experiences that unite soldiers, moments of grit where effort and perseverance matter as much as results. Image: SA National Defence Force Swimming Protocol: Guns Under Water The competition then shifted to the pool, where soldiers faced the Swimming Protocol. Far from a leisurely exercise, this challenge required competitors to dive into the cold water, swim to the pool’s midpoint, retrieve a dummy rifle from the depths, and resurface with it in hand. The exercise tested adaptability in unfamiliar environments, a vital skill in modern military operations. Underwater, comfort zones vanished, leaving only instinct, discipline, and the ability to stay calm under pressure. Emerging with soaked uniforms and rifles held high, participants demonstrated not only physical stamina but also mental resilience. Image: SA National Defence Force The Bronco Test: Endurance Redefined By the afternoon, attention turned to the Bronco Test, a grueling measure of aerobic capacity and recovery. Participants sprinted five 20-meter shuttles, totaling 100 meters, repeated every minute within set timeframes. This trial pushed competitors into a relentless rhythm of speed and recovery, simulating the physical strain soldiers might face during real-world missions. Each shuttle run was a battle of lungs and legs, with exhaustion mounting as the minutes ticked by. Spectators cheered as soldiers gave their all, embodying the Army’s relentless pursuit of readiness. By the end of the session, dust-covered and drenched in sweat, competitors walked away with a deeper sense of camaraderie, pride, and accomplishment. Image: SA National Defence Force Shuttle Runs Under the Sun As the day drew to a close, the Kopanelo Military Sports Club track bore witness to one final test of the day: shuttle runs. The scorching Potchefstroom sun added intensity as soldiers pivoted sharply, dust swirling with every stride. Here, fatigue became the true opponent. Yet, no one faltered. Every soldier pressed on, embodying the ethos of the South African Army, discipline, endurance, and the will to persevere in the face of adversity. The Strongman Challenge Heavy Loads, Heavy Demands On Tuesday, 02 September 2025, the competition moved into its third day with the Strongman Challenge. Under the blazing North West sun, competitors confronted one of the most grueling tests of raw power and endurance. The task seemed simple: lift a medicine ball, 30 kilograms for women and 50 kilograms for men, onto the flatbed of a truck, then roll it back to the ground, repeating the process within a timed window. But simplicity quickly gave way to strain, as every repetition demanded full-body coordination, tactical movement, and mental grit. Image: SA National Defence Force More Than Just Muscle Unlike traditional weightlifting, the Strongman Challenge mirrored battlefield logistics, where soldiers must maneuver heavy loads under pressure. It demanded not only muscle but also control, endurance, and resilience, qualities indispensable to military readiness. Drenched in sweat and covered in dust, competitors hoisted the medicine balls again and again, embodying the relentlessness of the Army spirit. The sight of soldiers summoning every ounce of energy drew admiration from onlookers, who witnessed not just an athletic contest but a living testament to resilience. Symbol of the Army’s Ethos The Strongman Challenge was more than a display of brute strength; it symbolized the South African Army’s ethos. In every lift, in every struggle against fatigue, the soldiers demonstrated the values of determination, teamwork, and preparedness that define their service. Looking Ahead With three demanding days completed, the South African Army Fittest Soldier Competition 2025 has already highlighted the best of the Pride of Lions. From endurance runs and swimming trials to the Bronco and Strongman challenges, competitors have endured heat, fatigue, and relentless pressure. Yet, the competition is far from over. More challenges lie ahead, each designed to stretch the limits of body and mind, ensuring that only the most resilient and disciplined emerge at the top. A Living Legacy of Resilience As the third day drew to a close, the competition’s true essence was clear: it is not merely about crowning the fittest soldier but about affirming the resilience and readiness of the South African Army as a whole. The seventeenth edition of the competition continues to build on a legacy where strength meets unity, and where every soldier, regardless of outcome, demonstrates the unbreakable spirit that defines service. In Potchefstroom, under sun and strain, that legacy grows stronger with every passing day. #TheGoToGuy #potchefstroom #SANDF #SAArmy #PrideOfLions #FittestSoldierCompetition2025

  • Potch Geesfees: Die fees waar jy wou wees

  • The Go-To Guy – Week 35 Diary

From community clean-ups and padstal pitstops to tractor rallies, rugby tours, escape rooms, and the start of Potch’s biggest festival, Week 35 gave us stories filled with passion, pride, and plenty of local flavour. Here’s everything we got up to this past week. Image : The Go-To Guy Creations StroomStories 27 August – The NWU Tractor Awareness Rally   Wednesday was one for the books in our StroomStories studio. We hosted members of the NWU Tractor Awareness Rally, an incredible initiative driving across South Africa from Potchefstroom all the way to Bredasdorp, between 30 August and 12 September 2025. And yes, they’re literally driving a tractor. The aim? To raise awareness around Dementia and Alzheimer’s, while breaking the stigma surrounding these conditions. In our talk, the team shared their route, their purpose, and the emotional impact of bringing such a unique awareness campaign to communities nationwide. It’s not just a rally, it’s a movement for memory and healing. Image : The Go-To Guy SportStroom 27 August – International Tours with BRSI  Also on Wednesday, we took to SportStroom with special guests Alex Skudder and Jandré Volschenk of BRSI. These guys are opening doors for schools by organising international sports tours that combine competition, culture, and personal growth. Imagine students not only representing their school abroad but also experiencing different countries, building confidence, and forging friendships across borders. For young athletes, it’s the opportunity of a lifetime and for schools, it’s a chance to expand their sporting footprint in a global way. Image : The Go-To Guy Our Eyes Out in The Field 25 August – Potch Geesfees Gives Back We kicked the week off with a strong sense of purpose as the Potch Geesfees team rolled up their sleeves to clean the Trimpark area. For weeks, rubbish had piled up, but the Geesfees crew (with the help of ALS) turned it into a movement of renewal. Bags of trash were hauled away, the park was restored, and a clear message was sent: before we party, we take care of our town. It wasn’t just about litter, it was about pride. Potch Geesfees isn’t just a festival; it’s a promise to give back to the very streets and parks where the fun will unfold. 25 August – A Padstal with a Twist in Parys Later that day, our “Eyes in the Field” adventure took us to a brand-new padstal in Parys, but not your average stop-and-go. Here, you can: Enjoy hearty meals at the Eatery Pick up local products Brighten your home with fresh flowers & plants  Visit the Biltong & Braai corner And even do your laundry at the Wassery Convenient, quirky, and welcoming, this is the type of roadside gem that makes you want to plan your next trip around a pitstop. Located at 19 Water Street, it’s a must-visit for locals and travellers alike. Image : Facebook FloTek 28 August – Flotek Potchefstroom Grand Opening   Thursday was packed with excitement, starting with the big reveal of Flotek Potchefstroom’s grand opening. • TRACTOR Awareness Rally Rolls Out to Champion Memory Care

On Saturday, 30 August 2025, the TRACTOR Awareness Rally (Together Rallying Across Communities To Overcome Remembrance-loss) officially set off from Samuel Broadbent House in Potchefstroom. The rally, covering 1,900km all the way to Bredasdorp, is more than a road trip. It is a moving initiative aimed at raising awareness around dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, connecting families, and uniting communities in the fight against memory loss. Image: NWU The ribbon was cut at 11:00 by Bibi Bouwman, Director of NWU Sustainability and Community Impact, marking the start of a 14-day campaign that blends symbolism, advocacy, and action. Origins and Purpose The rally is the brainchild of Esmé Marks, brought to life through the support of the North-West University (NWU) Faculty of Health Sciences and coordinated by NWU support staff. The idea was sparked by the emotional and social realities faced by caregivers across South Africa. By travelling slowly across the country, the rally reflects the long, often challenging journey that families endure as they care for loved ones experiencing memory decline. Samuel Broadbent House, a specialised Alzheimer’s care facility in Potchefstroom, provided a fitting backdrop for the launch. The venue underscored the project’s emphasis on dignity, remembrance, and the importance of specialised support. The Symbolism of the Tractor At the heart of the campaign lies the humble tractor, transformed into a powerful metaphor. Representing endurance, memory, and resilience, the tractor was decorated by local artists, turning it into a moving artwork. Along the route, miniature tractors are handed out as tokens of remembrance, offering a tangible way for communities to connect with the message. This symbolic choice is not coincidental. Much like the slow, steady movement of a tractor across farmland, the journey of dementia care is marked by persistence and patience. Route and Community Stops The rally’s path stretches from Potchefstroom to Bredasdorp, moving through Calvinia and a series of towns in between. Along the way, each stop is carefully planned to combine public engagement with education and support. At every town, the programme includes: Talks by healthcare professionals  offering insights into dementia and Alzheimer’s. Storytelling sessions  where caregivers and families share experiences. Student volunteers  engaging in service-learning activities. Community collaborations  with schools, businesses, and local media. Support groups and information stands  to connect families with resources. These activities are designed not only to educate but also to foster empathy, reduce stigma, and build networks of support. Research and Social Responsibility According to De Jager et al. (2017), more than 187,000 South Africans aged 60 and above live with dementia, a figure projected to reach 250,000 by 2030. The impact of the condition is far-reaching, financial strain, emotional stress, and caregiver burnout are common experiences. The TRACTOR Rally takes these statistics out of academic journals and into lived reality. By blending research with storytelling, NWU demonstrates how a university can move beyond classrooms and labs to make a direct difference in society. This campaign aligns with the university’s mission of merging academic impact with community responsibility. Researchers involved in the project are also collecting data during the journey, ensuring the campaign contributes to both awareness and scholarly understanding of dementia in South Africa. Day Four: Hope Town Connection As of Tuesday, 2 September 2025, the rally is in its fourth day, visiting the Hope Town Clinic. Here, the team is engaging directly with families and caregivers, hearing their stories, and sharing resources. Esmé Marks, serving as Project Manager, emphasised the importance of these moments: “Every conversation is a reminder that behind every statistic lies a family navigating the complexities of memory loss. This rally is about making sure they are not forgotten.” The clinic visit highlights the rally’s dual mission, to raise awareness while building human connections. Families gain access to information, caregivers receive encouragement, and communities are reminded of the power of empathy. Harnessing Media and Partnerships The rally makes use of digital platforms to amplify its reach. Live updates, short videos, and community stories are shared online with the hashtag #TRACTORforMemory , allowing those not on the route to follow along. Funding and logistical support come from a network of businesses, organisations, and volunteers. This collaborative approach ensures sustainability while reinforcing the idea that dementia care is a collective responsibility, not a solitary one. Looking Ahead The rally will conclude in Bredasdorp on 12 September 2025. Yet, its organisers stress that the journey is not just about the kilometres travelled. Each stop represents a ripple effect, more informed families, empowered caregivers, and communities ready to talk openly about memory loss. A Movement in Motion The TRACTOR Awareness Rally is more than an event, it is a statement of solidarity with every family affected by dementia and Alzheimer’s. By weaving together symbolism, education, research, and storytelling, it creates a moving platform for change. As the tractor continues its journey southwards, it carries with it not only the voices of those who speak but also the memories of those who cannot. For families facing the challenges of memory loss, this rally serves as a reminder that their struggles are shared, their stories matter, and their resilience is a source of hope. #TheGoToGuy #NWU #TRACTORforMemory #DementiaAwareness #AlzheimersSupport  #JourneyOfHope

🎓💚🎓💚🎓💚🎓💚🎓💚 Laerskool M.L. Emmies staan agter julle!  Deel Jou Storie Het jy ’n sport- of kultuurhoogtepunt wat jy met die gemeenskap wil deel? The Go-To Guy  se joernalistieke span is hier om dit wyer te vertel.
