- Students Stage Powerful Laydown Protest Against Gender-Based Violence
Traffic in the Steve Biko and Meyer Street area came to a standstill today as hundreds of NWU students participated in a powerful laydown protest, forming part of the national 620 Women’s Shutdown movement. The action, approved and coordinated as part of the broader Women for Change initiative, aimed to raise awareness around the ongoing fight against gender-based violence (GBV) in South Africa. A Moment of Silence on the Streets Shortly after 12:00, students filled the street and lay down shoulder-to-shoulder on the hot asphalt, symbolising the lives of women and girls lost to GBV. The image captured, a stretch of road filled with motionless bodies, illustrates the emotional weight of the demonstration. Even in the midday heat, participants remained committed, forming a silent yet unignorable message in the heart of Potchefstroom. The laydown lasted as part of the 12:00–13:30 action period, with marshals ensuring that the event remained peaceful and orderly. Many students wore black or purple , the movement’s official colours, and carried posters calling for justice, accountability, and protection for women across the country. Traffic Disruptions and Safety Measures The protest, which began around 11:00, caused significant traffic delays around Steve Biko and Meyer Street. Motorists were advised earlier to plan alternative routes, and campus security worked alongside marshals to redirect traffic and ensure the safety of both participants and road users. Despite the disruptions, the atmosphere remained calm, with students demonstrating unity and discipline, an important reminder that protest action can still be peaceful, respectful, and impactful. A Message Beyond Today Organisers encouraged those unable to attend to show support by wearing something purple in recognition of the movement. The broader message remains clear: the fight against GBV requires the collective voice of communities, institutions, and individuals. Today’s laydown was not just a protest but a moment of solidarity, a visual representation of student activism and a call for change that cannot be ignored. #TheGoToGuy #WomensShutdown #WomenForChange #EndGBV #StopGBV #JusticeForWomen #EnoughIsEnough #NoMoreSilence #BreakTheCycle #PotchForChange ✊✊🏾✊🏿🕊️🟣 ⚫

- Understanding Therapeutic Reflexology – Restoring Balance Through the Power of Touch
In today’s world of constant stress, digital overload, and physical fatigue, many people are searching for natural ways to restore balance and improve their overall well-being. One such method is Therapeutic Reflexology , a complementary health practice that uses gentle, precise pressure on specific reflex points across the feet, hands, face, and ears. These points are believed to correspond with different organs, glands, and systems within the body, allowing therapists to support the body’s natural ability to heal and rebalance itself. The Science Behind Reflexology Therapeutic Reflexology is based on the principle that the body functions as an interconnected system. Every organ, muscle, and nerve works together to maintain equilibrium. When one part of this system becomes stressed or imbalanced, related reflex areas may feel tender or sensitive. Reflexologists use this sensitivity as a guide, applying controlled pressure to stimulate circulation, nerve function, and the flow of energy throughout the body. Although reflexology does not diagnose or treat specific illnesses, it serves as a valuable complement to traditional medical care. By easing tension, improving blood flow, and encouraging deep relaxation, it helps the body activate its natural healing response , often leading to improved mood, reduced anxiety, and a greater sense of vitality. Feet Reflex – The Foundation of Wellness Foot reflexology is the most recognised form of reflexology. The feet contain thousands of nerve endings linked to various organs and systems. By gently stimulating these points, therapists help release built-up tension and restore energy flow throughout the body. Each area of the foot corresponds to a different part of the body, for example, the toes represent the head and neck, while the arch connects to internal organs. Through targeted pressure, foot reflexology can ease discomfort, improve circulation, reduce swelling, and promote relaxation from the ground up. It’s particularly beneficial for individuals dealing with fatigue, stress, or poor posture, as it encourages a sense of grounding and calm. Hand Reflex – Restoring Flow and Flexibility Our hands are tools of constant motion, often carrying the physical and emotional strain of daily tasks. Hand reflexology focuses on specific points on the palms and fingers that relate to vital body systems, such as digestion, respiration, and circulation. By massaging these points with precision and care, reflexologists can relieve stiffness, improve joint mobility, and promote a soothing sense of balance throughout the upper body. Hand reflexology is ideal for those who work with their hands or experience repetitive strain, such as typing or manual labor, and serves as a quick, accessible form of therapy even outside the clinic. Face Reflex – Calm Mind, Relaxed Body Facial reflexology blends gentle touch with deep relaxation. The face is rich with nerves and reflex zones connected to the body’s organs and systems. By applying soft, rhythmic movements across the forehead, cheeks, and jawline, therapists can stimulate circulation, release muscle tension, and enhance lymphatic drainage. The results go beyond skin-deep, face reflexology can help relieve headaches, reduce facial tension, and even improve sleep quality. - Carletonville Weekly News: Taxi Violence Shock, Safety Warnings, Service Strain, and Community Resolve
This week in Carletonville and the wider Merafong area brought sobering crime developments, persistent infrastructure and service pressures, and notable civic and community efforts. The following neutral roundup summarises key incidents and initiatives across safety, governance, health, environment, youth, and sport. Public Safety & Crime Two brothers killed amid taxi violence (Khutsong Ext 5) Two men (26 and 29) were found shot dead at a residence associated with taxi drivers in Khutsong Extension 5 on Sunday night, November 16. One victim was discovered in a minibus taxi in the yard; another inside the dwelling. The specialised taxi violence unit is investigating. Police safety advisory for motorists Local authorities issued an alert noting increased hijackings and thefts across the West Rand. Risk areas highlighted include the Carletonville CBD, Main Road toward Westonaria, parts of Randfontein (Greenhills, Toekomsrus), and zones in Krugersdorp and Kagiso. Drivers are urged to lock doors, limit distractions, keep driveways well-lit, maintain following distance, and ensure vehicles have reliable tracking. Merafong graveyards left unsecured Following extensive vandalism reported at Khutsong South cemetery (over 200 headstones damaged), a spot check found additional facilities without effective gates or intact fencing, allowing open access and, in some cases, livestock intrusion. Responses on broader security upgrades were pending at print time. Kokosi’s long-standing illegal dump grows A large rubbish heap near the old Kokosi cemetery continues to expand, reportedly due to inconsistent removals from nearby informal areas. The pile now encroaches on the street and approaches the height of the cemetery wall. A municipal response on clearance timelines was not received at print time. Neglected roadworks and potential sinkhole risks (Carletonville) Open, water-filled excavations were noted along Dolomite Drive and on Boundary Street following earlier pipe repairs. Geotechnical concerns have been raised given the area’s dolomitic geology. Feedback from the municipality was pending. Wedela residents reopen makeshift crossing After prolonged delays repairing a culvert and washed-away bridge on the road to the Wedela cemetery (with prior fatality in July 2025), residents re-established an improvised crossing to shorten detours. Formal repair timelines and communication remain points of concern. Khutsong preschool demolished after sinkhole damage A nursery school near the Batswaneng taxi rank, compromised by a sinkhole linked to a prior water leak, was demolished with local permission. Community members expressed unease about safety practices during demolition and questioned rehabilitation plans for the sinkhole site. Health & Social Services Hospital mitigation amid water crisis Carletonville District Hospital implemented contingency measures to manage ongoing municipal water interruptions: bottled-water provisioning and dispensers across wards, blue mobile containers for hygienic distribution, regularly serviced portable toilets, reservoir resealing, and exploration of a borehole backup. The facility reports continued operations under these measures. Community prayer and GBV awareness drive The hospital convened a multi-stakeholder healing walk and prayer service on October 30, focusing on gender-based violence, youth risks, and community safety. Health, social, faith-based, and civic partners signalled intent for continued collaboration with law enforcement. Wedela farm outreach on child and survivor safety Police and partners visited a farm community near Klipdrift on November 8, engaging around 70 residents on sexual assault, kidnapping awareness, and child protection, and distributing donated clothing. Community, Youth & Education Financial literacy e-book for township learners A Khutsong author released a free digital guide aimed at learners aged 7–17, offering practical lessons on budgeting, saving, teamwork, and goal-setting, designed for use by parents and teachers. Youth Christmas play seeks support Local organisers launched “Fit for a Brighter Future,” a Christmas production promoting fitness, self-esteem, and inclusion, and are seeking sponsorships (financial or in-kind) from residents and businesses. Grassroots compassion in Fochville A recycler crafted a gravestone from reclaimed materials to help a widow honour a late family member, highlighting informal social support networks and potential for similar community assistance. Sport & Recreation Phoenix Netball Club progress Fochville’s Phoenix Netball Club fielded mixed and women’s teams at a local fun day event. The mixed sides placed first and second; the women’s side won four of seven back-to-back matches, reflecting growing depth ahead of the next league season. Weekly Reflection A difficult security landscape and persistent service shortfalls continue to test local resilience. Yet practical mitigation at health facilities, targeted outreach by safety partners, civic initiative on mobility bottlenecks, and youth-focused creativity indicate a community intent on stabilising daily life and investing in the next generation. #TheGoToGuy #CarletonvilleWeeklyNews #PublicSafety #ServiceDelivery #CommunityAction #YouthDevelopment 📰🚓💧🏫🤝
- Potch Weekly WhatsApp Chatter & Service Update
During the past week, safety remained a key concern in various areas of Potchefstroom. A wave of unrest reportedly erupted in the Bult area following reports of a violent incident involving a student, prompting residents to avoid the vicinity. While details remain sensitive, the messages circulating in WhatsApp groups reflected community unease and heightened awareness. In a related development, an increase in Ford vehicle thefts was reported in both Potchefstroom and Klerksdorp, with a specific focus on bakkies and Everests. Vehicle owners were urged to take extra precautions. Image: The Go-To Guy Creations Power Outages & Cable Theft Several neighbourhoods were once again hit by power outages, many of them caused by suspected cable theft. Kamp Street experienced prolonged downtime, with WhatsApp users reporting outages since the early hours of the morning. Frustration grew as residents struggled to reach municipal contacts for updates, although some confirmed that repair teams were eventually deployed to reconnect severed lines. Similar electricity interruptions were noted in Wilgeboom, Kruis Street, Spruit Street, and MC Roode, with municipal teams gradually attending to complaints. The outages were largely attributed to storm damage and fallen trees, exacerbated by the weekend’s heavy weather. Water Supply Issues Water disruptions were also a recurring topic. A large leak in Rivier Street drew multiple complaints from nearby residents, some of whom shared pictures and exact addresses of the affected sites. Reports noted poor water pressure in Smit Street and parts of Kock and Hoffman Streets, where residents described daily challenges such as weak water flow and visible spouting leaks in roadways. A particularly severe leak near Jeugd and Rivier Streets was flagged early on 19 November, with repair crews eventually dispatched after community pressure. The issue was temporarily resolved by evening. Road Damage & Safety Hazards Heavy rainfall left several roads in poor condition, with WhatsApp updates warning of newly formed potholes in areas like Molen Street and Strydomstraat. Drivers were cautioned to proceed with care, especially as standing water often obscured road damage. Richardson Street also saw increased activity due to a school event, leading to traffic congestion and appeals for courtesy. In MC Roode, a thick veil of smoke from a nearby veldfire significantly reduced visibility, adding to the week’s driving hazards. Community Engagement & Meeting Cancellations Efforts to hold a community meeting regarding student housing challenges, noise disturbances, and service delivery complaints were ultimately cancelled due to low public response. Organisers had hoped for more than 50 attendees but fell short, despite active polling and engagement campaigns in WhatsApp groups. Organizers promised to reschedule and emphasised the importance of greater community involvement going forward. Petition & Legal Challenge on Demerger WhatsApp chatter also focused on the progress of the DA-led court challenge to the Municipal Demarcation Board’s (MDB) refusal to dissolve the JB Marks Municipality. The party filed a formal review application in the Pretoria High Court, with wide support from local residents who previously signed a demarcation petition. Messages shared links to media coverage and praised the councillors and leaders who initiated the legal proceedings, urging continued support for the process to restore separate municipal structures for Potchefstroom and Ventersdorp. Weather Alerts & Infrastructure Strain A weather warning issued between 15–17 November highlighted potential dangers due to a strong low-pressure system moving through the region. Thunderstorms, hail, and flooding were expected, leading to infrastructure pressure that played out in power outages and water leaks across the city. Flooding in nearby districts such as Rustenburg, Stilfontein, and Mafikeng was also noted, with road closures and rising river levels reported on the R24, N12, and R30 routes. Residents were reminded to drive cautiously and avoid submerged routes. Final chat From electrical faults and burst pipes to protest activity and pothole complaints, Potchefstroom’s WhatsApp groups remained a critical lifeline for information, response tracking, and neighbourhood support. As public services are tested by infrastructure challenges and weather events, local communication channels continue to bridge the gap between officials and residents. #TheGoToGuy #PotchUpdates #ServiceWatch #WhatsAppChatter #StayInformed 🟢 🚧 📱 📢

- M.L. Fick Skryf Saam aan Afrikaans se Geskiedenis
📖 📖 📖 📖 📖 📖 📖 📖 Laerskool M.L. 📖 📖 📖 📖 📖 📖 📖 📖 #MLFickTrots #AfrikaanseOnderwys #100JaarAfrikaans #SkoleErfenis #OnsGeskiedenis #SOSGedenkboek #OnderwysMetWaardes #MLFickVerhaal
